It’s official: Rucchin out for season
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We can put any Steve Rucchin comeback stories to rest. According to Thrashers GM Don Waddell, who I just got off the phone with, Rucchin is officially out for the season. It’s not a big surprise, although it’s the first time the team has said he’s done for good.
Evidently he went and saw a different doctor last week because he’s just not getting any better from the concussion he suffered from after taking a hit against Colorado back in February. With Rucchin’s history of concussions, he’s not taking any chances - plus there was the cracked foot, the shingles - it’s been a tough couple months for Rucchin.
So we can end any talks of Rucchin’s big return, and possibly moving Tkachuk back to his natural spot on the wing. Doctors are optimistic that Rucchin should be fine for training camp, but at this point nothing should surprise us when it comes to Rooch.
Steve Hummer attended practice for me today so I could wrap up my interviews and get writing on the Kozlov, Hartley and Lehtonen features, so I don’t have a practice update. Lehtonen story runs on Wednesday, so I actually better finish up there. Spoke with Scotty Bowman this morning for the Hartley and Kozlov stories, which was a blast for me considering he’s the best hockey coach of all time.
Since we were talking about the betting lines yesterday to determine who Vegas considered the underdog, well it’s official. I got an e-mail from somebody who found them on Bodog.com. Here’s a breakdown between the Thrashers and Rangers:
Odds to win Stanley Cup:
Thrashers 25-1
Rangers 22-1
Odds to win the Eastern Conference Championship:
Thrashers 12-1
Rangers 12-1
The series odds slightly favored the Thrashers
Rangers series -105
Thrashers series -115
As one reader pointed out, these lines are set up to even out the betting. So it’s pretty even between people picking the Thrashers and Rangers, except for those picking the Stanley Cup. The Thrashers pay a little more to win the Cup.
Standout stats: Was studying some stats, looking for trends when the Rangers and Thrashers play. Thought it was interesting that the Thrashers held Brandon Shanahan to just one point in three games. Marian Hossa has eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) in four games against the Rangers. Bobby Holik has two goals and an assist in the four games against his former team. Kari Lehtonen is a average 2-1 with 3.27 GAA against the Rangers. Only two players (Mellanby and Holik) have ever played the Rangers in the postseason, and both struggled. Holik has one assist in 12 playoff games against the Rangers. Mellanby has three points in 10 games against the Rangers.
Lastly, thought it was curious that ESPN’s John Buccigross, who is a hockey die-hard, concluded that the Thrashers have the edge at every position except in goal, and that “the Thrashers are the better team,” but picks the Rangers in seven. I guess until the Thrashers win a playoff series, they’re going to be considered underdogs.

No loss on Rucchin. When we signed him last summer, a few of us said he was old, slow, and wouldn’t last the full season. We are so much better without him and Kapanen as our top 2 centers, it’s not even close. I have no dislike for anything about Rucchin, other than the game has passed him by, time to retire.
Buccigross loves him some Thrashers, so I’m suprised to see him pick the Rangers. I assume it’s all due to their goalie. I can’t argue with him much, but I’m sticking with Thrashers in 7.
I hope we do not rue the day that we didn’t let Tampa take that 2nd point last Saturday.

Craig - the spread has nothing to do with who will win the game but only to set it up so the bookies never lose. The only way for that to happen is even money on each side, they make it on the vig (no, I wasn’t playing poker at that house in Roswell last night).
As for Rooch, I don’t want to kick an old dog while he’s down but I wouldn’t mind seeing him retire.

Craig - I was also going to say these lines haven’t had enough time to adjust, so we really don’t know if there is even money on each side yet…

Brian — I understand that, but it’s also a good indication of the public perception of the two teams. But you’re right, there hasn’t been a lot of time to move them one way or another.

Too bad about Rucch but he wouldn’t have helped us anyway at this date except in extreme need because of injuries.
I can’t believe there will be 8000 Ranger fans there. For the regular season game they had all year to buy up tickets. Surely the STH and pre-sale sold most of them. [And don’t call me Surely ba da bing]

While it would have been nice to have Rucchin available, at this point I would have been nervous about a non-critical player (critical being Hossa, KT, Kovy, Zhitnik, Havelid, Kari) come back after being out for 2 months. How rusty would he be? Even if he practiced with the team, it’s not the same as playing in a game. What would it do to team chemistry?
All things considered, we may be better off without Steve.

Shocker.
I was a big critic of Rucchin, but more in a “why sign that guy?” kind of way, it’s never something you would wish on anyone-injuries cutting their career short.
Well who knows who all bought all the cheap seats, but you will have a tough time finding one! still, I think the Bluelanders will be able to drown out the fat displaced (to any ex-pat NYC’ers, you know that statement covers 90% of the ATL NYC ex-pat population) and constantly complaining NYC’ers in ATL [if it’s sooo darn good up north why did you move? Oh yeah, better weather, friendlier people, better cost-of-living…poor thing].
My #1 one complaint about being a sports fan in this town centers on events& situtions like this-you moved from NYC in 1985 you’ve lived in ATL 22 years!!! You are under 50-this means at least HALF of your life has been spent here-but no you root for The New York Team…or flip it around to any rust-belt state (I’m looking at you deadwing fans)!
Anyway, my hometown team is about to Whup dat Yankee Azz and it will be refreshing.
LET’S GO BLUE !!!
P.S. I still motion for peaches as the post-goal ice decoration.

The way I’m reading Craig’s column, this isn’t career-ending, it’s season-ending. At least, I hope for Steve’s sake it’s just season ending. Best wishes to ya, big fella.
We need to start thinking about what to throw on the ice, ala Detroit’s octopus. I would really hate to see peaches; so cliche. Anyone have any thoughts?

If the line has them even up with all the money coming out of New York and most likely very little coming out of Atlanta, then there is a place to make some extra change betting Atlanta.
It is like betting against the Cowboys and Notre Dame, there are so many that bet blindly for their team that the stated odds always have that bias in them.
So smart guys tend to bet against the teams with the bigger population of fans.
I feel for Rucchin, but since he is younger than I am, I can say in all honesty that putting him on the shelf is a good thing and although I hope he gets better, his return will not help the team this year or next.
And for those p** about New York fans who did not change their stripes, I am one that did. I grew up an Islander fan, but when the Thrashers came to town I converted to the home team.

I’m sorry to hear about Rucchin. I know he didn’t have an outstanding season, but I would liked to have seen how he would have fit in with the new mix.
I really think that the Thrash will win this first series. During the T.B. game, I think we got a preview of what Kari will play like in the playoffs. The kid was pulling off some amazing “Pasi-esque” acrobatic stuff. Way to go kid! Just keep the “happy feet” under control and you’ll be great!
I think Kovy will come alive to put the fear of Zeuss into any opposing netminder and Hoss will dazzle as he always does, You know X will be dropping bombs and hopefully Slates will come to life.

I think our ice girls should be prepared for the Rangers. When they go to sweep the ice around the goal, they should give Lundqvist a can opener with the ice broom and mace him in the eyes. Nothing like some good southern hospitality.

R. Stroz — that’s a great point. They should send the ice girls out in full hockey gear — each with a Jon Sim cage - - you can never be too safe.

The best suggestion I’ve heard regarding what to throw on the ice is any fat blohard wearing a Ranger jersey.
Of course, this would REALLY be effictive they came flying out of section 409 row G onto the ice!!!
Now, could you just imagine some fat, smelly, maggot-invested, drunken, unshaven, nasty-a*******ed, ugly, disgusting, foul-mouthed, moronic, grotesque, lard butt… who’s arm-pit hair could be braded, wearing a ratty old Ranger jersey making a splat on the ice????

As I was talking to one of my customers yesterday he brought up the fact as fans we were fickle and obtuse(not sure he had the right angle on that) and somewhat lacking in our knowledge of Hockey.
How and when can you make a legal line shift change?
What is the definition of Icing?
What is and is not a legal check?
He said “you don’t know do ya? Every NY fan could tell you that in his sleep. So what do you have to say about that?” At the point I ‘jumped’ over the wall between us, grabbed his car keys and tossed all the way down the hall, and knocked his butt up against the wall and gave him a few shots as he went down.

That’s a tough break for Rucchin, who is under contract for next season, at age 35. Hopefully, it’s not the end of his hockey career. But if it is, his salary will be paid, but won’t count against our cap next season. Or, Don could trade him. But I don’t see that happening.
What a year. I mean, did you see the Thrashers making the playoffs, when it was announced that Haydar, Wanvig, Krog, Metropolit and Rucchin were signed? Add to the mix, Niko Kapanen. I didn’t. But, at the same time, I knew that wouldn’t be the roster that went to the playoffs, if playoffs were going to happen. Don actually saved the day this year. It will be interesting to see the dynamic of the team in the coming years, as only eight (8) Thrashers are signed to return next year. Anything can happen this Summer, in terms of free agency. I wonder if prospects like LaVallee, Pavelec, Sterling, Little and Valabik will be on the roster next year?
But now’s not the time to think about that. It’s time to plot and conspire ways to shut down Straka, Jagr, Marcel Hossa, and Shanahan. And Roszival. We can do it, Blueland. We just need “faith.”

catfish were taken by Nashville grrr, you can’t really Chuk 285 signs (they are much bigger than they appear as you fly past @ 75mph+)…something on fire would be cool but also a quick trip to pre-trial…you could throw knock-off gangsta grillz, but nobody would get it…trust me, I’ve been paying this a lot of thought-and you know how painful that can be for me. I still can’t think of something that represents our town that is better than peaches….any suggestions?

How about we don’t throw anything on the ice? Yeah, that’s a good idea. It’s kind of cheesy with the catfish in Nashville. Throwing things was original in Detroit. it’s going to be very funny when they’re more RANGERS fans at philips arena than atlanta fans. just like this past week when there were more than 10,000 METS fans at the TED and when the KNICKS play in atlanta or previously at the OMNI. OH and don’t deny the sorry fan support in a city of millions.

We should understand that since they grew up in an open cesspool that is the NYC metro area, there’s probably some brain damage (which explains the short bus). You know, we really should be nice to these poor fellas, nobody should pick on the impaired.
On that note, the Thrashers might rethink givin out the Blueland Scaves tomorrow. Some of these poor slobs could be so despondant, they wind up hanging themselves after the game. I hope their caretakers confiscate them when they get back.

You know what is quiet, Madison Square Garden when the Rangers are on the brink of elmination. I have had the pleasure of being there a couple of times as they were sent packing out of the playoffs. Zipay,
The Thrashers had 11 sellouts this year. With 41 home games, that’s just over a quarter of the games sold out. Given that Phillips has 18,000 capacity and the vast majority if non-sellouts I went to had at least 15,000, I would say our attendance isn’t appalling as people would have you believe.
I don’t know where to find the hard stats, but I’m willing to bet our attendance was significantly better than at least three other playoff teams: Nashville, New Jersey, and San Jose.
Moreover, I haven’t heard anything in a while but a couple months ago I was given the impression by someone at Atlanta Spirit that attendance was increasing at a steady rate for the past three seasons that we’ve played.
We also had one of the best attendance records of any expansion franchise in history our first year.
Finally, nearly half the people that live in this city were not raised here. The fact that so many of the people here have shed their allegiance for Atlanta teams (like iceman) I think says a lot. I sure as hell did not shed my allegiance and start rooting for the Rangers and Mets when I lived in the Open Cesspool for four years from 98-02.

The city of NY has a population of 8,143,197 vs. the population of Atlanta which has a population of 470,688. That can be verified both here by the US Census Bureau and here by another site called infoplease. So what does an advantage of 7,672,509 in population mean in terms of NHL attendance? The storied original six NY Rangers averaged 18,200 at home this year vs. the Southern expansion Atlanta Thrashers who averaged 16,229.
And if Atlanta wins a Cup this year, they will have won just as many in the last 8 years as the NY Rangers have won in the last 65 years…

You’re the one that came onto this board to stir things up, you’re the one that attacked Atlanta, and now you’re the one saying that it was all in fun and the people that have been posting all year are the ones with the problem. Get a life.

Only two took Calgary at ESPN and just one over at cbs.sportsline.com. All eleven (11) took Buffalo over the Islanders.
Another curiosity, all six ESPN experts too the Sharks over Nashville. Coupled with 3/5 at CBS, and that 9/11 taking the Sharks. I feel bad for Nashville. They deserved a better break than having to face what could be the Cup winner in the opening round. Of course, the Preds could have avoided all that by winning those late season games with Detroit. They didn’t. And they finished 2nd in their division.

Hey Tony C., did Avery really spit on her? First of all, that’s disgusting. Secondly, she’s cute. Did she have too much taste to go out with him?
Hey BGKAHUNA88, nice that at a quarter to 4 IN THE MORNING, you don’t have anything better to do than blog on a foreign website. Either cut down on the amphetamines or get a day job. I’m glad to see that your idea of defending your team is to attack the fans. Is that possibly because you know (in your heart of hearts) that they’re gonna take a whuppin’?

you know whats funny is that when you have nothing educated to say people resort to ethnic, stereotypical bashing. it really shows the whole inferiority complex you guys have.
FYI the south lost….scratch that they SURRENDERED to the north.
it’s over, been over, and there’s nothing you or i can do about it.
i see that all you guys are bunch of 10 yr. olds that got mommy’s password.
PLEASE don’t bring politics into this. this is not a platform for your views on life. IE the flag or the 10 commandments. because that is all you guys think gov’t is. not the deficit, healthcare, education, unemployment, taxes, etc., etc. well you guys get the point i hope.
400,000 people in ATLANTA funny very funny. and yeah theres only 1,000 that actually live around the garden. stop it! the metro atlanta area has millions of people living there. and i won’t talk about cesspool and corruption but a relative of mine who has worked for the gov’t drug task force for 26 yrs. says the drug epidemic in the south (crystal meth) is as big NOW as cocaine(crack) was in any city in america at any given time in the last 30 yrs.
we should bash each others teams not geographical location, or ethnicity, or political views. if not keep showing me how dumb i really am.

hey STORSTARK it wouldn’t be any fun if we didn’t poke fun at each other. and i never attacked atlanta as a city per say. i attack the crummy fan support. and indeference your city has had toward pro teams.
TELL ME I’M WRONG. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT SOUTHERN LIVING OR ANYONES ETHNICITY. OR LACK OF EDUCATION OR ANY NUMBER OF CRUDE COMMENTS I COULD HAVE MADE.

There’s not much to debate about our clubs, they’re pretty evenly matched. You have Jagr, we have Hoss. You have Nylander, we have Kovy. You have Shanny, we have Tkachuk. Straka, we have Kozlov. Holmqvist, Lehtonen. Both D’s are pretty even. Records are pretty similar.
So, it all boils down to this:
You were raised in a rat infested open cesspool + we live in luxury at 25% of the cost = Thrashers win

Ohhhh, damn, nobody consulted your personal protocol for trash talking! Apparently your RULES for trash talking are limited to 1) statistics; 2) other fans; 3) geographic support for a team. And the rationale is that those rules are the most “fun” without hurting anyone’s feelings? Eff that. If I’m gonna trash talk, I trash talk. Or sometimes I shove, like when I put some obnoxious Rangers fan on his a* at Phillips in January.
I agree that politics shouldn’t be discussed here. As a Swedish citizen I’m a bit offended by politics in the Deep South and I’d prefer not to know what my fellow fans think in that regard.
Thanks for providing us with ammo and getting us fired up, but this is the last I respond to anything because frankly I find you tedious.

BGKAHUNA88 - you make reference to “the flag or the 10 commandments. because that is all you guys think gov’t is. not the deficit, healthcare, education, unemployment, taxes, etc., etc.”
Did you know that the gov’t also has THE CENSUS BUREAU?!?!?! Because that is what I linked to. Here it is again - THE US CENSUS BUREAU and here is the exact same data on another site.
Unless of course you cannot argue against facts. So while you sarcastically claim only 1,000 people live around the Garden, please provide factual data like I did.

I grew up in upstate NY and was a Ranger fan starting in roughly the third or fourth grade(1960’s)when I started to play hockey. Been in ATL for almost 30 years and continued to root for the Rangers up until the Thrashers came to town. Now, nothing would make me happier than the Thrashers in 5!!!…

well stork i’ll leave your precious newspaper blog since you are offended that i had the audacity to come here and start a little friendly banter.
i’m glad that you have opened the dictionary as to try and sound intelligent.
and as for pushing a rangers fan down. jeez who cares what you thought you may have done or really did. we can all be 10 ft tall and bullet proof on a keyboard if we should choose. shows me and the others here once again how small in ALL aspects you really are.
just tell me where you’ll be on thur and sat and i’ll come by an introduce myself if you really are a nice guy as you say. until then much love from above.
