First some news from around the league, some of which impacts your hometown hockey team:
As most of you know, the Kings dealt Craig Conroy to Calgary, so there’s one center the Thrashers won’t be picking up before the trade deadline. It was a pretty good deal for the Kings, writes SI.com’s Allan Muir, and I tend to agree. Conroy is having one of his worst seasons, and he’s signed through next season. For a rebuilding team like L.A., to clear that salary is a boost.
Colorado most likely lost veteran defenseman Patrice Brisebois for the rest of the season because of a back injury. The Denver Post’s Terry Frei reports that Avs GM Francois Giguere plans to apply for long-term injury status for Brisebois, which might open up cap room for the team to trade for either a defensive replacement (know any teams with depth on the blue line?) or to make a run at Peter Forsberg.
Speaking of Peter Forsberg, he met with Philly GM Paul Holmgren regarding his future with the team, and after reading most reports of the meeting, things sound as murky as ever. They reportedly didn’t talk about whether or not he wanted to be traded and his injury is preventing much talk about a contract extension. I asked Don Waddell how closely he’d be following the news from the Forsberg meeting, and he wasn’t. “Not at all,” were his exact words, before adding - “I’ll find out soon enough.”
According to the Canadian Press, former Red Wings star Steve Yzerman will be named general manager of Team Canada for the 2007 World Championships in Russia. If it’s true, that would make Yzerman the favorite to be Canada’s GM for the 2010 Olympic team. Alright, so this has very little impact on the Thrashers, but it’s good news for the player I think is one of the most underrated superstars of the last 25 years. (Can you tell I’m from Detroit?).
Big game for the Thrashers tonight against New Jersey. A (regulation) win and they’re back in second place in the Eastern Conference, plus we’ll see Andy Sutton for the first time since November. The quicker he shows he’s 100 percent, the more flexibility Waddell has in dealing with other teams as the trade deadline gets closer.
