Going down swinging

I chatted with Bob Hartley after this morning’s practice about his in-game strategy while down three goals last night against Montreal. If you look at the minutes of guys like J.P. Vigier and Brad Larson, each played about five minutes less than in the win over the Kings on Tuesday.

We saw Slater centering the Hossa/Kozlov line for part of the third period (Kapanen was back there during practice today) and some double-shifting of guys like Kovalchuk and Hossa. The result was a franchise record 45 shots on goal, although Cristobal Huet stopped 44 of them.

Here’s what Hartley had to say about the strategy:

“Whenever I’m down in a game, I’ll go down swining, I never get caught looking. I’ll never sit in my office after and say I should have done this or should have done that. We have to act before the fact, after the fact it would be so easy to coach.”

With the loss, Saturday afternoon’s game in New York becomes a little bigger. The team doesn’t want to head into the break on a two-game losing streak. It’s much easier to enjoy a vacation if you head into it winners of three of the last four games, versus a team on a two-game slide.

Is it 4:20 yet? Mike Vick

This is exactly why help down the middle is a bigger priority at this point than adding a D-man/PP QB.

Jim Slater is being given extra ice time when we need to step up the attack. In a couple years he may have added an offensive aspect to his game but for now, that’s really grasping at straws.

Hey Roswell ED you tool that 4:20 joke, not that funny man. and this is a hockey article… so football remarks kind of unnecessary, just like your life.

Lastnight just addsfuel to the fire, that we need additional scoring help at center.

Rucchin is simply awful and Kappenan is right behind him. We have toget MORE production and now the ONLY remaining method is a trade…

Colburn would be great to let go, he is nott strong and a terrible fighter, thatwas really bad, but he is a choice to leave town.

So…now what is the WORST G0 in the NHL going to do next ???????

WHO KNOWS !!!!!??????####

No,foolsball sucks.

Now we know why Vick can’t pass the “football”,might wanna check them to for secret compartments.

Anyways, why not let Metro center a line of Kovy and ?. Or what about Kovy-Holik-Metro?

Kapanen and Rucchin are being forced into roles they don’t fit.

We aren’t far fromt he deadline, interesting what is gonna happen. Please beat the Rags tomorrow guys.

Was last night’s strategy, “floating like a butterfly, or stinging like a bee?” Actually, it felt more like “rope-a-dope” … by Montreal. And it worked.

That’s why I like Hartley. Go down swinging.

To make a good playoff run, you need to get hot in that last 20 games of the season. If we can get the right center, this club can make a run. Get er done, DW.

The waterpipes are a leakin everywhere. Even the Zamboni crashed last night. Ice looked soft too.

Our power play. I wish it was like football…then we could decline the penalty and stay 5 on 5.

PK…we looked like road cones again.

Good point on an earlier blog by sara…no passion, energy or chemisty like earlier in the season. Last night we were simply outplayed by Montreal. A mistake or two and we were toast.

Hope the boys bring their “A” game Saturday. When they are playing well they are such a treat to watch.

What is it with these guys that like to come in and bash on hockey? I mean is it jealousy? They can’t stand that it’s faster, tougher and more exciting than whatever sport they subscribe to?

He’s wasting his time telling us what he thinks about a game he doesn’t like, and we’re the ones who needs to get a life… Give me a break.

More than 15 hours later, just eight hockey posts. Hockey nerds gathering by the ones to talk about their favorite “sport,” ie soccer on ice. The ice ain’t all that’s soft.

Ok, Nice win gang! Time for Wadsworth to work some trade magic and improve this team before the stretch run to the playoffs. Looking forward to seeing Hoss in the Allstar game this coming Wednesday. Go Thrashers!!

That was Rucchin’s best game of the year. Hossa, Kovy, and Lehtonen all plaid great, again.

It’ll be nice to get Sutton back after the break, never thought I’d say that. I guess Hnidy and Coburn got themselves into Coach’s doghouse in that last game, they didn’t see much ice today.

Hartley also wins swinging. For the second half of the season these folks (with the minutes played against the Rangers) are looking over their shoulder excluding Melanby of course:

J. Sim LW 4:14 S. Mellanby RW 5:36 B. Coburn D 6:17 J. Slater C 6:45 N. Kapanen C 8:05 S. Hnidy D 8:36

Howabout that!!!

Nice win especially the manner in which the guys just closed things out after the go-ahead goal….although that area still needs work, that was the best end-of-game performance we’ve seen from Le Thrash in a long, long, time! There were some breakdowns, some of our D-men still getting sucked out of position, but much better. Very encouraging, I even saw #17 on the ice with less than 2min. to go. That speaks volumes about hiBob’s influence and #17’s dedication.

Given the timing, best possible result. Win a close, hotly contested game, weather a high-powered team’s best shots to close it out, and your MVP candidate seals the deal with an empty-netter….The guys should feel good about this win, and Coach has something to point to when they get back from “vacation”.

I’d like Slater as well as the other two contestants for “Center Hoss & Slava-Matic” to see exactly how much room Slater got when that line was on the ice with the score tied. There was once sequence where Slater made a shot and was able to get his own rebound becasue Hoss & Slava were doubled !!! I’m going to chalk up the lackluster 2nd shot to bad angle and surprise at being all alone, but man c’mon! If you keep your feet moving and your eye on the puck, centering those two you’re going to get Grade-A chances. One of those guys (Slater Kappanen or Metro) needs to take advantage.

Great win, loved watching the guys shut down Jagr & Co. It’d be great to see them build off of this.

Who do yall think is going to win the “hardest shot” competition?? I’ve got Souray.

Fastest Skater??? No idea

Accurate Shot?? I’m going with Hoss (if he’s entered)

anyway it’ll be sweet to see Crosby & Ovechkin on the same line.

LET’S GO BLUE!!!

It looked as if the Flyers were going to give the Thrashers a little help when they went up 3-2 on the Devils (#2 seed in the Conference). By the time I flipped back to that game, it was over, and the Devils won 4-3, in the shootout. Dang. But the Panthers beat the Capitals, 4-1. So, that helps a little. (Thrashers have not locked up that playoff berth just yet, ya know.) The Caps have PAH-LENTY of cap room, if they want to buy at the deadline.

Kovy’s goal was a bit lucky this afternoon, but I suppose it makes up for the whiff my Mellanby. Havelid got the game-winner, and Hossa cemented it with the empty-netter. Great way to go into the All-Star break, winning three of four (3/4). Now, no one … and I do mean NO ONE better get injured in this All-Star game and “Young Stars” game.

Last, I’ve been thinking more and more about this trade deadline. And the costs associated with that. Perhaps I’ve been looking at it the wrong way. I’ve thought to look to Western Conference teams headed towards the lottery draft. Maybe a better route is the IDENTIFY the cerebrally-challenged GM’s from the Western Conference. Coming IMMEDIATELY to mind is Doug McLean, of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Who do you like from that team? I believe McLean can be “fleeced.” It’s YEAR SEVEN of his tenure with Columbus, and they’re STILL nowhere near a playoff berth. In fact, they had to fire another coach this season, to attempt to cover up the ineptness of the GM. So, I repeat, who do you like on Columbus’ roster? I really think Zherdev and Federov are probably “wishful thinking.” But, I’m willing to listen to brain-storming out there, bloggers. Give us some “hypotheticals.”

From CBJ, the only people I see that are worth anything but won’t cost too much are Modin and Carter. But neither of the them are centers, which is what we really need, but I think either of them could be a decent enough winger to put across from Kovy to actually establish a solid top line. Just throwing it out there, not sure who you would give up, I think Columbus is desperate for bodies at almost any position. O solid win by the way, great to see Rucchin has a pulse. Plus, IMO Jim Slater is the most frustrating player for me to watch on the team. He is so fast, but has no offensive talent or luck for that matter. I truly think that if he just focused on getting shots on net, and acting as a warm body for kovy to bounce pucks off of him he could easily have 10-12 goals by now. If he could do that, we wouldn’t need a center at the trade deadline…

…as much. Could focus on getting some d-men, (Coburn’s not cutting it come playoff time).

Interesting comment Daniel, Modin is a play maker that has been lacking a supporting cast…

IF Waddell is going to make a deal then he would probably trade a dman due to Pop being ready to come up and play solid minutes next season…

I’m not a math major. Won’t ever pretend to be one. So, those of you who are mathematically gifted, how much would it cost to get Federov, if his date of acquisition were Feb. 27th? I think he’s salaried somewhere in the viscinity of $6M a year.

Columbus won’t part with Rick Nash. They’ve got him locked up for another 3-years. I think his contract is $5.25 million-per-season. So, he’s actually cheaper than Federov. Which might have McLean thinking … trade Federov. They’ve got to retain Zherdev and Gilbert Brule, etc., etc. They’re gonna have cap problems pretty soon in Columbus. I bet they’d like nothing more than to pluck some team’s 1st round pick to shed payroll. Poster Geoffrey Paul actually mentioned this as a possibility.

Federov has always struck me as a “Me first, team second, where’s my money!!!” type player. I don’t know that he’d be the right “fit” here, even as a rental. Then again, how could Kovy and Federov fail?

By russian

January 21, 2007 02:41 PM | Link to this

To Brendan Oh man!!! You are not give up Fedorov idea! :-) Actually you are right, we can afford Fedorov in BlueZone. We have money and somebody to trade in Columbus. We will see what happened.

By Brendan

January 22, 2007 05:28 PM | Link to this

Federov is under contract for another year. It’ll be tough to convince Belkin that Federov, at his age, is the best way to spend that money next season. It’d be different if Federov hit the open market this Summer. Then he’s just a “rental.”
