Thrashers fine with All-Star starting snub

There won’t be any Thrashers starting in the All-Star game, but it was a pretty understanding group in the Thrashers dressing room this morning. Marian Hossa, who probably deserved a spot more than anybody (he is the league leader in goals), just shook it off saying it’s a fun game, nothing he’s too worried about it. Ilya Kovalchuk’s first words when I asked him about it were, “I don’t care.” The league will announce the complete All-Star game rosters on Saturday.

I guess if you get too wrapped up in fan voting, you can’t focus on important things, like beating Montreal. The Canadiens seem to be completely recovered from the flu bug that’s been bothering the team for nearly a week. It was a full and pretty upbeat dressing room this morning on the Montreal side. Evidently the day off yesterday helped, so we’ll see which team can break its losing streak.

Scott Mellanby skated again with the team, with contact. He looked good out there and Hartley said he’s close to returning. Hartley wouldn’t say if his captain was going to play against New Jersey, but from the looks of it, we’ll see Mellanby back in the lineup sometime this weekend.

What I’m reading:

  • Politicians are starting to support the Prudential Center, the New Jersey Devils new arena scheduled to open in October. Not everybody was behind the construction of the arena, but after Prudential Financial paid $105 million for naming rights, roughly a quarter of the construction costs, critics are on board.

  • David Vest of the Arizona Republic reports that Mike Ricci will not retire. The Coyotes center was instead placed on the injured reserve.

  • The Vote for Rory campaign fell short according to this story in the Vancouver Sun. Rory Fitzpatrick was the center of a little bit of controversy as fans voted in huge numbers to get him on the All-Star team, despite his lack of All-Star credentials.

All stars are great, but I’d rather have the Thrashers in the playoffs!

Four outta six (4/6) left on this road trip. Then, it’s the All-Star break. And then, a six (6) game homestand to cement our hold on 1st place in the Southeast Division. Hopefully.

For if not, another six (6) game roadstand follows. It’d be nice to have some cushion in the standings before that happens. Our last game before the trade deadline will be at Boston on “Versus.”

Tonight, cozy up with someone who has Center Ice or settle for another night with the 680TheFan.

Comcast cable will run a special on Jan. 10th for $109 for Center Ice for the rest of the season. So, if you’re thinking that route, you only have to wait a little bit longer to order it. If you buy it tonight, it’s $169.

But, if you only watch thrashers games..is 5 more blacked out games the rest of the way worth 109 bucks? That is if you only watch thrashers games.

    well,,, that was miserable.

Do you get the feeling that the Thrashers need a sense of urgency when they play. And how can Metro miss the empty net like that.

It was bad enough having to watch the game in French, but that was a lackluster effort if I have ever seen one.

Thanks Michael for headsup on freeview on directv..nothing like watching your thrashers implode in late 2nd through 3rd period in FRENCH. 3rd goal atl let in should have been stopped by kari..was it me or was the puck bouncing all over the place all night?

OH hey metro..i want you to take a broom and start sweeping in your hotel room..give you some better practice

Wow! Is it just me or are we seriously lacking something? We must and should make a move to infuse this team before it goes out on that 6 game Western road trip. Tonight and the last 3 games have been miserable efforts. Don’t look now Thrashers here come the Hurricanes. What are they 8 points back with games in Hand? Sorry, for the downer folks, I just needed to vent some steam.

Only thing I could understand from that feed all night was the Habs announcers comparing Metros missed swipe to Patty Stefan’s recent open net gaffe.

What the heck was Coburn doing on that first goal. Who was he covering, his defensive partner?

We’re going to need a center, Kapanen and Rucchin just are not getting it done and Coach doesn’t give Metropolit a chance at it, bring someone in.

    Hey Craig,

We’re O’fer since you came on board. Step it up hot rod or the locals will be screaming for YOUR head. Is Terence M. available for this gig? On second thought…But seriously, I hate to say this but my gut feeling since day one is that we are a bit overrated. Tonight’s game looked a lot like last year’s team. Our defense has imploded and our forecheck is almost non-existent. Finally, don’t look now but the entire team is about become a minus (we’re at +1 and earlier this year I believe we roaming around +20). Also, we’re slipping to a .500 winning percentage as well. Stats don’t lie.

Gretsch - C’mon now, you can’t pin this on me. Although Kari Lehtonen was saying the same thing after last night’s game.

Keith — I expect Mellanby to return against Jersey or Carolina. The team cancelled practice this morning, so we’ll see how he looks at the Thursday morning skate.

I try to tell myself that well, this is one of the difficult road stretches of the season. Our goal should be .500 for these 8/9 road games. If we get it, we’re in good shape. Trouble is … losses, even overtime losses, still feel like losses. And they’re stockpiling now. The key will be the six game homestand after the All-Star break. If the Thrashers take 10-points out of those six games, they really will be okay. But, ya know, we still need that Center and additional blueliner.

Craig, do me a favor and ask Coach why he’s the only guy in Atlanta that can’t see that Metropolit should be played more minutes? Ask Coach why he keeps sticking Kapanen’s worthless butt on the top two lines when he’s got Metro right there. Every time Metro gets out there, he makes things happen, he has all year.

    Craig-

What is the deal with the sorry TV coverage? Fricking SportSouth keeps choosing to show us the sorry Hawks instead of Le Thrash. What can we do about this?

Scribble this somewhere on your Thrashers “collectible” notepad for future reference.

Rondelle = puck. Filet = net. Le but = a goal. Lancez or tirez = shoot, or fire at. Le guardien = the goaltender. Defenceurs = defensemen. Ailier droit, gauche, et centre = left wing, right wing, and center.

The word I wished we’d heard last night was “pEriod de prolongation.” That means, “overtime.” Mais, ca n’est pas arrivE hier soir. (That didn’t happen last night.) D’oh.

Of course, everyone’s favorite word in French is “derriere.” Which means, “behind,” as in “derriere le filet” (behind the net.) It’s also anatomically correct.

It would be nice if the Thrashers had earned the respect of all-star voters. But it would be better if they had earned the respect of themselves. When they start playing 60 minutes of hockey like they believe they deserve to be there, then the fans will notice and the all-star votes will come.

Until then, the Thrashers are seen as an annoying bump on the ice for real teams on their way to Lord Stanley’s cup.

Fuskie - Who is tired of defending the Thrashers to “real” hockey fans…

I like the “whatever” attitude about this,…All Stars are great and all, but the mission is playoffs and Cup run!!!!

Besides, if the Blue Crew is a successful this spring as we all hope/think they will be, these things will come. As long as balloting is a popularity contest and “name recognition” it really does not reflect 100% who is deserving and who is not.

I’m sure we will have 1-2 on the squad….

    GO THRASHERS!!!
