Filtering is fine for water, bad for the Net
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There’s a move afoot by the big Internet providers to ‘filter’ the Internet.
That’s a polite way of saying that they want to check to see what you’re doing online. The reason - searching out people who download pirated material. But, to do that, they have to monitor what you’re doing.
Here’s a Web link so you can check out the growing possibility that Big Brother wants to keep an eye on you.

Filtering means that ISPs risk losing their common carrier status, and that means potential legal issues for Internet Providers.
They really need to think this through a bit more. Seriously.

Agree Prootwadl - and long time since we’ve talked, good to see you back.
It bothers me, as an old guy who enjoyed the days when the Net was fairly useless and a lot of fun, to see it get so controlled, so commmercial.
All that had to happen - it just the way of the world - but I don’t have to like it.

So many forums, so little time. :-)
Commercialization by itself isn’t an issue until it starts interfering with various noncommercial services.
Thankfully, the services in question are very similar to the internet itself; attempts to control it will simply be viewed as damage, and those services will simply route around the bad areas.
We live in interesting times. :-)
