Upgrade to Vista planned for 2008
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For those of you waiting for Service Pack 1 before buying Windows Vista - plan on waiting a bit longer. The official word is finally in. SP1 will be released in early 2008.
Most of you who read this blog know what a Service Pack is - a collection of fixes, changes and tweaks all in one software package. With Microsoft XP, Service Pack 2 was a huge deal - almost like a new version of XP. That won’t be the case with SP1 for Vista apparently. You can read about some of the plans for it by clicking here.
Microsoft is downplaying the weight of SP1 since business traditionally wait for the first service pack before installing a major new operating system. Microsoft would be happy for businesses, and consumers, to upgrade now.
I remember, when Vista first came out, telling readers to wait for the service pack. I’m not sure that’s necessary now. But waiting can still make sense. Vista requires so much more power and - to my way of thinking - twice the RAM memory. So if your machine is doing fine with XP and you want to avoid the possibility of changing the videocard and adding RAM - then just wait until you buy a new more powerful PC.

Eye Candy is nice but a working O/S is more important. I haven’t heard of any companies going to Vista, and until mine does, I won’t either. If you do want it, buy OEM.

I have a laptop that came loaded with Vista home edition. It seems to boot up faster and I have none of the problems, like non-respondsive errors that I experience with XP. I also have not noticed any of the issues about too much security that I have read about that Vista is supposed to have. I plan on upgrading my two desktops as soon as I can afford it.

You can get both “Eye Candy” and “working O/S” with Linux, just add beryl. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y6kd42jIaHk See it yourself, i cant belive the video the first time i see it. Once you use it, never feel the same the old good 2D window manager (any windows, gnome, kde, mac, etc).
