Microsoft makes new enemies
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’ve never been a fan of the Windows authentication routine - it’s a pain. I do understand Microsoft’s desire not to have folks steal its software by making copies. It’s a legitmate fear and costs them lots of money. Some people excuse the thefts because Microsoft is a giant. But stealing is stealing whether you grab a pack of gum from a small retailer, or swipe software that costs $200 or more from a huge corporation such as Microsoft.
All that said - I really dislike the painful authentication process that Microsoft imposes on its customers, the folks who have paid for the software.
But even those who admire the authentication process had to have second thoughts on Saturday when those installing legitimate software were told that they had counterfeit copies. You can read about it in an article linked here.
Microsoft says the problem is fixed now and probably it is. But such a complex system will always have the chance for malfunctions. And each time that happens to a legitmate customer, it will - and ought to - add fuel to the notion that Microsoft uses its power to force users to do things just one way … the Microsoft way.
