Better HDTV performance, lower price

The first HDTV that I tried - years ago, a demo from the manufacturer - was a 42-inch plasma model from Philips. As I recall it sold for $6,000 at the time.

You don’t have to look at many ads to see how far prices have dropped.

Now even the new 1080p sets are becoming affordable. I’ll stick with my old set - frankly the picture is so good that I don’t see the need to upgrade. But for those who crave the very best picture, things are really looking up. And, based on reader e-mail, I know some of you are already on a second or third set. In fact, I got an e-mail Sunday from a reader who is on her fourth set now.

I’ll link to a review here from Cnet that talks about a $1,700 1080p model that delivers decent performance. The review is very detailed so I won’t go on and on - obviously the set is not top of the line, but it does deliver the sort of picture you’d expect from 1080p. For those of you who are still trying to figure out the difference between 1080i and 1080p - well, the article takes care of that too.

We bought a 1080p DLP Samsung 50” TV back in February for $1599. After owning a smaller LCD & plasma TV, I’ll never go back to either type after having DLP technology. No picture degradation whatsover over time unlike plasma & LCD.

I still have my 61” Hitachi rear projection TV. Bought it 5 years ago at Sears Outlet (highly recommended to save big bucks) for $2,400 (was selling elsewhere new for $4k) and it still looks great. It’s about 2 feet deep, but I’ll hang on to it until it days before replacing. So far I’ve only had to replace a fuse for $300 (including labor).

I will never buy an hdtv.I watch tv now with a set of rabbit ears and when that signal goes goodbye,I simply keep the set for viewing movies.I am done with advances in electronic technology.I could stand more speed on my satellite internet, but I can live very well without it. .

I also think DLP is the best HDTV out there. The picture is the best and the pricss are lower than LCD and Plasma. That is why I don’t like houses where the TV is mounted above the fireplace- you can’t mount a DLP TV.

We bought a 42” LCD Zenith HD TV about 3 years ago for $3,000.00 and it’s been great. It got zapped by lightning once and the bulb blew, but it was under warranty and was fixed for free. We were told it would have cost about $600 had it not been. The picture has not gotten worse. The t.v. is great and the screen isn’t all shiny and reflective like plasmas are.

Fourth set? That’s nothing.

I have 6 HDTVs in my house. Anywhere from a 26” Polaroid in a spare bedroom to a 32” & 110” projected screen in the theater. I had DirecTV HD boxes to all of them as well.

I only have on tube TV left in the house. That’s another 27” that’s been around for a while.

And what’s crazier is that my neighbor has more than me! Has has two 32“‘s and a 120” in his theater alone.

Wow, Ghost - there must be a power surge in your neighborhood when you turn all those sets on.

You mean to tell me with everything that’s going on in the world all you folks can do is talk about how big your t.v. screens are and what technology it’s based on?!!

And people wonder why America is viewed so poorly amongst the rest of the world!!

Hi, Who Cares, a person can talk about TVs and still care about the world I think. I’m not sure how things are in your life but every once in a while I even go to a restaurant, see a movie, or take a walk — and don’t spend every waking minute discussing the world’s problems. My guess: You had nothing to say but wanted to say it anyway.

Susan is that guilt I smell?

I can join in and talk about my t.v. as well, but what since does that make?

I’m amazed whenever I see a article like this. But how many articles do you see related to something that will get America to talking and into action about real problems.

Movies, Restaurants, Wlaks in the park……Fun sure, but you have to come back to reality sooner or later

So what are you saying, Who Cares….people aren’t allowed to talk about anything other than what’s going on in the world? There are blogs for that, too. This one happens to be about HDTV. Maybe people are reading this blog to find out which is the best TV to buy so that they can have a better view of world politics from their living room.

‘Come back to reality’? This is reality, with all it’s little quirks and stupidity and fun. To assume that someone who is talking about their TV is not up on world events is kinda tunnel vision-ish of you.

Well said Dee. And Who Cares-if you’re going to start attacking someone on a blog it might be a good thing to run your comments into a spell checker before you post them. It just makes you look silly.

Who Cares, what a fitting name.

George E., you don’t have to worry about converting all your TV’s to HD. They only want to convert the signal to digital, not HD.

You will still be able to watch your regular 480i TV’s. You’ll just need some type of converter box. If you have cable or satellite, then you’re already set.

Dee, I understand your comments, and I understand that there are blogs for different kinds of chat. This blog is the blog I happen to catch. I was reading through ajc.com and saw this blog and thought “you’re kidding me”.

I also know that this is reality, but reality only here in America. The thing that gets me is what about the reality of starving children in the US. The reality of Homelessness in the US. The reality of Slavery in the US. The reality of racism in the US.

I never a*-u-med anything, I know people are up on things, they just don’t care is my point. We live in a “me only” world.

And to Ada, I bet you feel really good about your comment don’t you. Go buy your own opinion. Oh, and by the way, anyone can tell by seeing Wlak and Walk was a mistype.

‘reality only here in America’ That is so unbelievably not true that it makes you sound like a….well, I don’t know what. Just because people are here talking about HDTV( which is the SUBJECT of this blog)has NOTHING to do with whether or not they care about the state of the world. We are a privileged nation, almost everyone would agree on that, and we have numerous problems, but taking the time to ask questions or make comments about TV’s does NOT make ANYONE uncaring or uninterested. Are we bad people because we feed our children while others are starving…no! Are we bad people because we’re not out in the street protesting racism from dawn til dusk…no! Does that mean we don’t care? NO!

For all you know, everyone who commented on this blog has been commenting on other blogs about the state of the union. By saying that ‘they just don’t care’ you ARE making assumptions about these people…assumptions based on nothing else but their interest in quality HDTV’s. People are multi-dimensional. They can be interested in tv AND in saving the world.

Boy, this is interesting. I’m glad to see folks mixing it up here. Me? It’s a blog about technology. I write about technology for a living - so that’s the topic. But lord a mercy, feel free to talk about the world and its problems if you like. I have to admit that I do see the point of the folks who are saying that you can enjoy HDTV and still care about the world … I don’t see that interest as being mutually exclusive of caring about other stuff. But still, I sure never expected this and I’m enjoying reading all this. It’s a welcome change from the merits of 1080p vs. 1080i.

Truth is - confession time - I’d probably enjoy anything right now. I’ve worked straight through for about 9 days - including the weekend - and I’m taking tomorrow off so I’m in the right mood to sit back and watch the fuss. I don’t have to go back to the newspaper until Thursday and that seems a fine thing at the moment.

I don’t particularly see the point of Who Cares - if he’s saying that you must only talk about weighty matters and should never discuss something as mundane as an HDTV. After all, most normal people are multi-dimensional. And folks who are obsessive about one single point usually end up having their beers alone. But still - it’s fun to sit at a distance and watch.

Bill…I’m honored. Can’t tell you how many times you’ve saved my computer. Sorry about the argument. I’m a regular on another blog and people are always popping in to tell us how stupid, shallow or uninformed we are. It just annoys the crap out of me. The presumption that someone knows who I am by what I write on a certain topic is juvenile! Then again, I’m very argumentative, so maybe I was just looking for someone to land on! :-)
