How to switch to iPhone without paying a stupidity tax

Maybe you’ll be standing in line for an iPhone on Friday, wallet in hand (hey you’ll need it). Let me help you avoid some added expenses if you’re switching carriers (and if you’re not an AT&T customer that’s what you’ll have to do).

This article, linked here, provides a handy check list of things to do to make the change to AT&T as seamless as possible and to avoid added charges.

The price tag on the iPhone is hefty enough - this article can make sure you don’t pay a couple of hundred more by skipping some steps or ignoring some rules.

Thanks for the article. I already knew this info but I think the important thing is that if you want to keep your number, don’t cancel your service with your current provider until after you request the transfer. Also, AT&T has a link on their website where you can check to see if your current number can be transfered to their network.

Also, apple has a step by step video on their website on how to activate and sync the iphone using itunes.

I must admit, apple did a good job getting information out and making the activation process easy and seamless. I hope AT&T doesn’t mess it up by providing crappy service.

Hi C. Diddy, I was talking to one of the techs (he is in charge of our telephone equipment, including cellular) at the newspaper this morning and we both agreed - when dealing with cell companies, especially with AT&T - it’s really important to check and double check.

Unrelated to the iPhone there are often plans that will deliver the same or better service available. But cell companies are not proactive when it comes to letting you know. Folks need to ask, from time to time. And it can be literally as simple as saying: “Is there another plan out there that would save me money and give me the same service.”

Thanks for the link. I will be getting an iPhone - or that’s what I think today - but I think I’ll wait a few months.

Waiting isn’t such a bad idea for a bunch of reasons. Apple has said - or hinted - that some of new features will be added in the next generation. Also there’s no question, at least in my mind, that prices will drop dramatically within six months.

What a complete gimmick! Only royal morons would buy such a “phone”.

Screw Apple, I agree. But it was sort of nice to hear what you said and also to read the comments from Herb. I was beginning to think that I was living in some alternative universe.

I’m sure that all of my friends who live off their trust funds are already standing in line. If I didn’t have a life and a decent paying job that provided me with a QWERTY keyboard cell phone… for FREE… then maybe I’d consider standing in line and loitering for 39 hours so I could make a measly $200 selling it on eBay, too.

I’ll wait until the early adopters work the bugs out of it and the l33ts figure out how to unlock the phone. Thanks, but no thanks for now…

Big surprise, the media is gaga over and floats from one over-hyped story to the next. Oh, I can’t wait to hear the breathless news about The Paris being spotted with an iPhone in hand. Just think the media can kill 2 birds with 1 stone! Apple couldn’t bait me back to at&t’s inferior service and network, even with a free iPhone. There are several smart phones already available for much less and that work on at least one far superior network (Verizon) according to independent sources. If you must parade about with an iPhone in order to feel good about yourself, then you are a…dork. No shortage of dorks on this one.

I read in Monday’s 6/25/07 Palm Beach Post where a user got an error from Windows stating that his copy of Windows XP was not an original. This occurs on computers where the clock on the operating system has been erroneously changed. This is one of those stupid error messages that Microsoft has created to avoid turning back the clock on expiring evaluation copies. His copy of Windows is most probably valid. I think you should have mentioned that to the user before checking to see if his version is valid.

Unfortunately, that user’s version of Windows did turn out to be a counterfeit version. But it’s good to have the other tip since it’ll come in handy for others.
