Vista - the first 30 days
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If you’re still using Windows XP you may feel a little left out since most of the talk nowadays is about Vista.
First, congratulations - you were smart to wait, by and by all the manufacturers of video cards and printers will have drivers for Vista (other than hardware that is too old to be supported) and some of the opening day jitters for Vista will be over.
You can read a bit about some of the ups and downs of Vista here - including a problem that I’ve had with my video card driver. As you’d expect, you’ll read that some people love Vista and others hate it. But the problems noted in the article jive with my own experiences.
But I also wanted to link to a story that offers some excellent tips - here - on how to speed up Windows XP. There’s still a lot of life left in that software. I know in my own home, just one of our six computers is running Vista, the rest are chugging along on XP.

Bill, glad to see you have six computers in your house, maybe now I will get to keep a couple of mine. Not writing to bash the Microsoft there are lots of folks using it including my blood kin, but I suppose people need to ask themselves what they really need from their computer if they want to limit their expenditures accordingly. If one feels they need the things which purchasing Microsoft or Apple offers them, then go for it. If it is a home user scenario doing email web browsing photo editing etc any of the popular linuxes will do the job. FOR FREE. Also easy to install. If you are wanting a little challenge go with the OpenBSD, FreeBSD etc.

Help, I have been playing Starsiege Tribes (ONE) since is first came out almost 10 years ago. Vista will not play it. Something about OpenGL and Microsoft. The game starts fine, but does NOT recognize the Mouse. Anyone have a fix?

I was reading your article in the Diddly News about tweaks that one can do for their computer to speed up its processes and when I visited some of the sites you recommended the free down-loadable software was able to tell me that there were problems inherent in my two computers. However, those were only trial versions which did absolutely nothing for me since I am not going to spend another forty dollars to actually buy the programs to fix my computer. Instead of offering us advertisements you should offer advice about free-ware programs. Two that I highly recommend are www.antivirus.com which is a free virus scanner from Trend Micro and www.crapcleaner.com which safely removes unnecessary junk from ones computer. We spend enough money on programs for our computer and these two programs are free-ware and can greatly improve computer speed without extra purchases.
