Anti-adware programs reviewed

My wife gets frustrated because - when we go out to eat - I always want to go to my favorite restaurant. I know the folks there, know the food is good and feel at home.

It’s the same with software. I’ve used SpyBot at home as my main tool fighting spyware and adware. But - because of that - I’m not as up-to-date as I should be on other products. I read about them but - to be able to offer an honest opinion - I’d need to use them for an extended period.

My old favorite SpyBot made the top 5 list in a review at PC World. But it was No. 5 on the list. You may want to check out the reviews over there and even try some of the products.

As always, it’s interesting to me if you have a favorite in this category - whether it is on the list or not. So feel free to let me know

At the risk of showing my ignorance in public and admitting that I might well be something of a fanatic, but because I have loaded three of the five anti-spam and anti-malware soft-ware programs found in this PC World review, it seems to me that your soft-ware program is passive(meaning that it detects cookies already placed in your system) whereas the top-rated programs are active (meaning that they prevent such)so I have Spy-sweeper as my active program and then run both Ad-Aware and Spy-bot from time to time as back-up … which seems to work for me, but then this might be over-kill (???).

I just downloaded AVg Free Edition and AVG Anti-Spyware and I have MCAfee Firewall and Virus protection through Comcast. Is this enough protection or should I also add Microsoft’s firewall and virus protection? Also give me any other suggestions on computer security.

I get notice from Norton that I have a “High Risk” with Adware Betterinternet. But when I download the removal tool from Norton, after much ado (time) I get a response that says I don’t have the risk. So which is it? Thanks

Hey Annette, you can use Adaware or SpyBot Search and Destroy to remove Betterinternet - both are free.

And at least Betterinternet isn’t sneaky. Unlike some, it doesn’t sneak into a computer - it actually has to be installed.

Anyway, Microsoft’s Defender, Adaware or SpyBot should get rid of it just fine.
