Pitfalls of online shopping

Shopping online is a fact of life and - for me and millions of others - a good one.

However, anyone who has done a lot of shopping online will tell you that there are plenty of pitfalls. Some companies offer unbelievable prices - and you’d be right not to believe them. I’ve seen grey market goods - with no U.S. warranties - sold without the disclaimer that you can’t get warranty repair service.

And if you buy from an online merchant based on the glowing reviews from other consumers on the site, be warned that those reviews are often made up by the merchant.

There’s a great article at PC World about all this and more. Think of it as basic training for online shopping. You can read it here.

I buy almost everything online; I’ve even bought groceries online for shipment to an ailing relative who lives in another state.

I only buy from well established, reputable site—like Sears.com, Landsend.com, etc.

If you’re buying clothes, please pay careful attention to the size chart. A small in one brand might mean a size 6; a small in another brand might mean a size 2.

Also, with clothing, I buy brands/sizes that I have already bought and tried. Size 8 Theory pants fit the same regardless of whether bought in-store or online.

Lastly, keep an eye out for free shipping offers.

Amazon is my achilles heel. I’ve even started buying groceries there. Since they started the free shipping on most toys I’ve bought Christmas toys, I buy my books and DVDs there, clothes, I’m expecting 7 boxes today, mostly groceries. The amazon prime shipping plan is incredible, I don’t have to have $25 worth to get free shipping and it’s here 2 days later, and only $3.99 for overnight shipping. Unfortunately I can no longer buy used books with one click because Prime customers automatically get expedited shipping on 3rd party used books, and it costs more. I guess they’re trying to encourage you to buy the books new and get the free two day Amazon prime shipping. Prime membership costs $80 a year, I was using a free trial but I think I’m now hooked on it. For groceries check out the most sold items on Fridays, they have Friday specials. The stuff on sale is 60% or more off, but it sells out quick. Drugstore.com is my other weakness, spend $50 and get free shipping and they always have good specials, the bi-o-kleen stuff works so good, the stain removver with live enzymes and the grapefruit laundry detergent, and they smell so nice, and the method line of cleaning and soap stuff, and the philosphy shampoos, I just bought cinnamon bun and pumpkin pie, I love online shopping! The selection is soooo great! The stores around here only have a tiny portion of what they have online, and you’d have to go to every store in a 20 mile radius to even begin to match the selection. When you shop always google the name of the store and the word “coupon” and dozens of sites will come up with coupon codes for the store you’re shopping at, you can get a percentage off or free shipping or both!

We’ve done quite a bit of online shopping, mostly electronics and items that aren’t size critical. Rebates and shipping seem to be the black holes,so I ask a lot of questions in those areas.Always be sure you are on a secure site before entering cc#s, as always if it sounds too good to be true, guess what it is.

The best advice for online shopping (mentioned only in passing in the linked article) is to NEVER EVER EVER use a debit card! Credit cards give you the best protections if something goes wrong, and you aren’t out anything from your checking account. Debit card errors or fraudsters could drain your bank accounts in no time flat.

Caveat: buy.com

I purchased because CNET recommended buy.com.

Big mistake!

Product failed. Now, three months later, no refund. Endless emails (no telephone number listed for or on website: buy.com. 800 number connects to India and is useless.)

Thought other “good citizens” should know.

Beware of: buy.com
