Firefox: Today’s Best Web Browser

There has been a lot of interest from readers of the blog in Firefox. So I asked a real expert here - who also is a Firefox fan - to make some comments. He’s also agreed to field any questions that you leave here. So let me introduce Russ Oaks, senior systems engineer here at the AJC. He has more than 15 years experience in IT and 12 years in IT management. Feel free to ask him about Firefox.

The Firefox Web browser , by Mozilla, is today’s pre-eminent internet browser. All Web sites are designed to work with Firefox and it is designed to work on every operating system. It can be installed on any computer with Internet access. You can download it here. Just click on the Download Firefox link.

It can be made the default browser or can be set up to work when preferred. The primary reason Firefox is better than all other browsers is that it is fully customizable with more than 1700 extensions, 200 themes, and an automatic plug-in installer page. Extensions range from tabbed browsing controls, rss feed tools, weather forecasts, internet e-mail tools, and stock trading tracking tools.

Once you’ve installed Firefox, or if you are currently a Firefox user, go to the main menu bar, click on Tools, then extensions. A new screen with your currently installed extensions will come up. Click on the “Get More Extensions” link in the lower right corner and you will be taken to the add ons.mozilla.org website.

Extensions listed here can be installed and un-installed at-will so you can try as many as you like and if you don’t like how a particular extension works - just delete it. Some of the first extensions to try which are always useful are “Tab Mix Plus”, Toolbar Buttons, and ForecastFox.

Tab Mix Plus reallly works - you can set up each site you go to to open on a separate page or tab, for starters; “Toolbar Buttons” will allow you to customize your primary FireFox tool bar (especially the “restart Firefox now” button) and ForecastFox - for weather reporting, etc.

I’ll be glad to field any questions regarding extensions, plug-ins, and themes for Firefox.

I have just installed the new version and now am no longer able to keep my home page (www.excite.com). It always defaults to mozilla’s firefox page. VERY annoying. When I boot up, I want my personal excite page to load. I do what I am supposed to do, go to options, general tab and select homepage, and it will stay that way until I reboot. Why doesn’t it save it permanently?

PS…I meant to add that I have used Firefox for three years, and LOVE it, and never had this problem until the new version came out.

I’ve been a Firefox and Firebird user for years, and would never go back. However, how can you say that it works with all Web sites when video from the AJC’s own home page won’t run?

Re: the previous comment. I’m using Firefox on a Mac, and I have all of the needed software installed. I can watch video from almost any other Web site without problems. Just not the AJC’s.

Firefox is clunky and slow. Opera is a much better browser. Been using it for close to 10 years now.

I have both Firefox and Opera on two different platforms. Firefox beats Opera for speed on both.

I have IE7 and Firefox running and I love Firefox. I believe if you have the ability to, run both and make up you mind by yourself. Most web pages work well with Firefox but I have seen some exceptions. The extensions and themes are very inviting and innovative. Thinking of installing other apps recommended by the Mozilla family.

I think you are mistaken about Firefox working on every website. While the majority will work in Firefox, there are still some sites out there who use IE code which causes Ff to have some issues. Suntrust billpay is one. Some multimedia enhanced sites also cause problems. BUT, Ff is head and shoulders about IE so it’s definitely worth it. I’ve switched my fiancee over to Ff and some people at work too.

I like Firefox myself and use it most of the time, but it does NOT work with all web sites, especially online game sites such as Microsoft Game Zone and Shockwave. A number of games at these sites will not work with Firefox.

I’ve had Firefox for a year and I while I love it much more than others, I do problems with Microsoft controlled websites particularly MSN Games, Microsoft video designed to run with Explorer and MSNBC. The games will not run at all and the news site quite often will shut down my FireFox.

For now I have to keep Explorer for those apllication, but I continue to run Firefox for everything else.

Hi Colleen - what is the version you’re currently on? Did you go to the beta release or are you still at 1.5x? After resetting your homepage, hit ctrl-alt-F4 - this should lock in your current settings on a Windows system. If that doesn’t work, try saving more than one page as your default.

G and Kevin - almost all web sites :) There are probably a few sites that have been designed to work with “default browsers, like Internet Explorer and Safari simply due to design overhead costs, or, the company running the website is owned by Mr. Gates (anything with Microsoft in the name…). Pages designed to work under Netscape, should, for the most part, run well in Firefox. I know the AJC has a help page for what is needed to view its video: http://www.ajc.com/search/content/worldnow/VideoHelp.html

I just updated to the latest Firefox version as I was prompted to do. Unfortunately, it runs slow, ver slow. It seems that with each new version Firefox runs slower.

I have tried clearing my cache, but that didn’t help.

Could it be that I use the No Script and Ad Block extensions that are causing the slow browse speed?

And why does Gmail not load?

I never use those two…. Another one that impedes overall is the Digg Toolbar - I love Digg, but won’t suffer the performance consequences.

Have you looked at the local backup tool? Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup…. I have used this tool extensively and it always works well. To become familiar with it yourself, backup a few files or a directory and then perform a restore.

Colleen - you may need to re-install Firefox - completely removing it. From the registry too. Are you familiar with Regleaner?

A couple weeks ago, I got a BLUE SCREEN with the following message, when I started my computer. Every few days since then, I get the same BLUE SCREEN and message when I start my computer. Does anybody know what caused this and how to fix it?

I would really appreciate any advice and or assistance. I’m not a techie.

Here’s the message in the BLUE SCREEN:

“A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: IPVNMon.sys

PAGEFAULTINNONPAGEDAREA

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode. Technical Information: * STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE18D0000, 0x00000000, 0xF758c77A, 0x00000001) * IPVNMon.sys – Address F758c77A base at F7583000, DateStamp 3bd4228f”

BSOD Blue Screen of Death Try to bring up the PC in safe mode as prompted and uninstall the software/hardware most recently installed (that which most likely caused your BLUE SCREEN.

The error you’re getting “IPVNMon.sys” is being caused by a conflict between Windows and “Visual IP InSight”

The Visual IP InSight (IPVNMon.sys) file probably came from your internet service provider.

You can find a patch to fix the problem here http://updates.visualnetworks.com. May or may not correct problem. Worth a try.
