The Microsoft Vista choice
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Microsoft’s Vista, the operating system that will replace XP, should be available by January. Well, maybe it will, maybe it won’t. But smart computer users will wait for a month or two after the release anyway - let the other guy experience the opening day bugs and long waits at tech support lines.
Besides, it may take you that long to decide if you want what Microsoft calls a Vista Capable PC or a Premium Ready PC. Yeap, there’s more technobabble to navigate. But at least Microsoft was clear about the requirements for PC hardware - finally.
Here’s a Microsoft page that sets out what you need to run Vista.
Here’s my boiled down translation of Vista Capable and Premium Ready. Vista Capable works just fine with Vista, Premium Ready will be able to take advantage of all the fancy graphics upgrades in Vista. If you want a more detailed version of the differences - hey I don’t blame you - here’s the long version.

Even though I am a MS stock holder, I don’t plan to touch Vista with a 10 foot pole for 3-4 years. After that I might get it with a computer that is $290 or less after rebate. I’m still using XP, win2000 and win 98 on my old computers and they work fine.

I followed your instruction for down loading Defender and free AVG and get essentially the same message: cant find C:DOCUME~1\OWNER\LOCALS~1\TEMP\3\oismg.uu.exe or qho46dub.exe and to try again or check with my provider. My partner was able to get AVG Free earlier on his laptop. We both have XP

Your article should have said “Smart computer users will just get an Apple Mac”…I feel sorry for people that still need to use microsoft windows, or might purchase the new ( if it ever comes out) Vista OS…from what I have read in other articles and from Beta Testers of Vista, its is filled with bugs and major problems….Vista will be a total nightmare , I have no doubt !

No problem, Gary, it also happens to me (I just have the luxury of being able to go back and delete my double posts). If anyone else is having problems with the system timing out or general slowness, feel free to leave a message. I do pass these notes along.

Gary’s right on the spot. I finally got fed up with the Windows world this year and bought a Mac Mini. Naturally the Intel versions were released a month later but the G4 version is still quite nice. The only tech support call I have had to make was involving the fact that I used a Microsoft keyboard.
MacWorld also just published a story on their Web site where they compared a nearly identical Apple Power Mac and Dell PC. The Dell ended up costing about $1,000 more. Sure you can buy a PC cheaper, but that’s only because the manufacturer cut corners on parts somewhere. You get what you pay for. If you need Windows, buy a copy of XP and use Apple’s Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop.

It’s the same old sad tune. Ignorant mac users bashing Microsoft products because they are too ignorant to own a computer. XP has been a great product and Vista will be even better. macs are pc’s with training wheels. no flexibility and too proprietary. The same reason the IBM pc failed. Let the flaming begin…. :)

John, get out and smell the roses. XP isn’t a bad platform, admittedly, at least if one is a little knowledgeable and can keep it worm- and trojan-free, but remember how long it took the fine folks in Redmond to get their OS to that point. When was Windows NT first released again? 1992?
There are reasons why many Mac folks (and many OS/2+Linux folks like myself) still consider Windows to be a tag-along OS. It never seems to get ANY decent features until 5-10 years after everyone else has them.
Oh, and about IBM PCs: go to IBM’s web site and check out IBM’s IntelliStation line. My two model 6899’s (built in 1997) are still going strong, and IBM’s serious workstation line continues to prosper. They simply got smart and left the low-margin consumer PeeCee market to the Dells and HPs of the world. You can have ‘em. :-)

OS/2 was the best OS I ever installed or serviced. I will still run across voice mail systems that I installed years ago running on a 586 and OS/2 Warp 3. IBM just makes terrible decisions. By the way how much did you pay for those 6899’s. The conversation was talking about how cheap the mac’s are. I am currently typing this on a dreaded Dell optiplex gx 260 that has the same load of XP on it that I installed 3.5 years ago with no hiccups. The problem with Windows is that people do stoopid things to their pc’s not that the pc or OS is stoopid. I will admit bias in this whole OS war thing. I have been an MCSE since 99 and make a very good living off of Microsoft. That being said, if you install the system and keep the kids away, there is no reason to worry. It is the porn sites and teen freeware that gets 99% of the wintel folks in deep. macs are fine, I just like to incite conversation…..
