Build your own Web browser

Firefox, the Web browser, is becoming the clear favorite among those in the know. Most think it helps prevent viruses, spyware and and pop-ups - there’s no word yet as to whether it prevents sore feet or bad breath.

The real fun of the browser is in the ability to customize it with extensions. And that adds to the popularity since the finished product truly becomes ‘your’ browser.

If you’d like to see what all the excitement is about, check out this link to some of the most popular extensions at Download.com. And if you have your own Firefox stories to tell, or want to recommend extensions, have at it.

One of the nice things about Firefox is the fact that it isn’t just for Windows like MS’s Internet Explorer. I can move between my XP, Linux, and OS/2 boxes at home, and each of them is running the same web browser. :-)

Bill Husted: What is the radiation risk of spending hours a day for years in front of a computer screen, sir?

Blog Dawg, the conventional wisdom is that there’s no real danger from radiation - no matter how long you sit in front of a computer monitor. I’ll paste in a link here to a government OSHA site that talks about that.

However, some folks think you should be worrying about ELF instead of x-ray radiation. Here’s a link that talks about that.

I don’t know enough about radiation risks to offer anything more than that. Even the experts seem to go back and forth on dangers like this - remember the stories about how cellphones could be a cause of brain cancer? Then remember the stories about how that was wrong. Then there were stories that said, well, maybe there is a danger.

The best place I have found that lists good Firefox extensions is Will Langford’s Firefox Power Users Guide. He has some good and some unusual extensions.

My favorite is Adblock. From their site: Adblock allows the user to specify filters, which remove unwanted content based on the source-address. If this sounds complicated, don’t worry: it’s not. Just add a few filters. Every time a webpage loads, Adblock will intercept and disable the elements matching your filters. See?- nothing to it

I like User Agent Switcher. That lets me use Billpay on Suntrust’s web site even though the Suntrust folks seem to thing Mozilla doesn’t work. Someone needs to tell them that nobody is using Netscape 4.x anymore…

Blog Dawg, I’ve been a programmer at work and PC hobbyist at home for the past 18+ years, and my hair isn’t glowing yet. :-)
