Google offers safer searches

Giant technology companies attract a lot of praise as well as plenty of haters. Microsoft sure comes to mind. And Google has had its share of detractors too.

But a recent move by Google shows how some of that power can be used for good. If you are using Google for a search and an unsafe Web site is among those found in the search, you’ll get an onscreen warning.

What’s an unsafe Web site? It could be one that implants spyware, or that offers a download that is unsafe. You can read about the new benefit from Google here.

I’ve used the Google toolbar - you can read about it and download it here - for years. Among other things, it helps stop those annoying pop-up ads on the Web. However, make sure you read all the privacy warnings found here before making a decision to install it. None of what I read troubled me, but checking out these disclosures is always a good idea.

Adware, malware, spyware and cookies are all very similar but the first three are almost always used for things that you don’t want to happen, while cookies can be just as bad as spyware, depending on where they come from and who they send their info to. But at least Google is moving in the right direction.

A question. I have 2 phonelines that I used for dila-up and fax. DSL working well including wireless network. Want to drop second phone line. Can this just be done by a call to phone company and there will be no problems with dsl/wireless or is there something I will have to do with the jacks, etc? How is best way to hook up message machine, fax on the single line? Thanks.

Hi Godfrey, I don’t think you’ll have any problems at all making the switch from two lines to one. And it will not require a service call from the telephone company.

We still have two lines at home but the line that carries our DSL service is also shared with a voice telephone as well as a fax machine with no problems at all … even when we’re using DSL, the fax and the voice phone all at the same time.

Since space is limited here, I’m pasting in a link here to an excellent Web site that does a fine job answering the rest of your question. I think you’ll find the discussion of digital filters and line splitters helpful.

Bill:

I follow your column with much enjoyment. I have learned a lot. Today, I tried to find the link to the Microsoft Adware/Spyware program mentioned in your piece in todays AJC. I failed! Which is not surprising to me as I am a techno idiot. Where does it hide or should I have just Googled it?
