I play games, do you?

The other night I was fighting some especially frisky monsters in my favorite online game, Guild Wars, when one of the players had to leave. His mom told him it was time for bed.

I’ll admit it, I’m demented when it comes to computer games. I spend way too much time with them. I tried to explain it to my stepdaughter once by telling her it was no different than being obsessed by golf of baseball. Her answer? “Yes it is.”

Hey, she’s right.

But I’m way too hooked on games to quit them now. Some of the sites I visit include Gamespot, IGN, and Video Game Review.

Judging from the e-mail I receive and the people I meet online, I am not unique in this obsession. So I’m starting this area on the blog so you can compare notes on your favorite games. Who knows? Maybe I’ll find a new game that takes me away from Guild Wars. My wife will not thank you.

I just play older games, mainly because I only have older PCs. Sometimes it’s RTS stuff like TA (Total Annihilation) or HW (Homeworld), and sometimes it’s putzing around with the bot code I’ve modified in Starsiege:Tribes and trying to take on a team of bots. I wish I could make them a little bit smarter. :-(

I also play various older arcade games via emulators like MAME, Retrocade, Appler, and/or DVE.

I had my first PC for at least three years before I tried out my first 3D game. Once I got started, though, I couldn’t quit!

I won’t go through the list of all the games I have or the ones I’ve played. But, imagine a small U-Haul covered trailer. I think my inventory would fill one. LOL!

Anyway, I’ve been fortunate to meet some very nice developers of games and to actually work with some of them in the process of creating and testing games. In fact, just this past Thursday, August 3, we finished a two and a half year project for Deep Space Nind: The Fallen. The name, CONVERGENCE, is my idea. The designer contacted me in the beginning to see if I would be interested. Of course I was!

Even in the midst of this project, however, I’ve compiled a substantial list of ‘games under the belt’ as it were. Half Life 2, the Splinter Cell series (3 games), Morrowind and two if its official add-ons, F.E.A.R., Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion — which I’m still working on and plan to for the foreseeable future.

My most recent acquisition is FLATOUT 2. I’m not even a racing sim guy, but this game has so much fun packed into it that I find it irresistible. I even bought an XBOX 360 USB controller to use on my PC just for this game. (Well, actually, it was for FLATOUT the original.)

FO2, as does its predecessor, has ragdoll physics and a nearly total damageable environment. I would encourage anyone who has any inkling of interest it motor racing to check out this game.

FO2 also has a very smooth online MP experience with up to 8 drivers total.

Additionally, it has some stunt games that include High Jump, Bowling, Stone Skipping, etc. All of these are accomplished by ejecting the driver from the car and using him as the ‘missile’ as it were. Some of the results are laugh out loud funny.

Another excellent consideration: It won’t break the bank, either. Brand new off the shelf it’s $29.99 + tax. XBOX 360 version will be ten dollars more.

Bill, I know exactly how you feel and what you go through. I find myself sitting at work thinking about my addiction but in my case it’s EQII (EverQuest II). I started off back in my Military days playing Diablo as a weekend get together with the fella’s or deployed keeping our mind sane..then I moved to Diablo II and Simulated games (Flying and Driving games) and then onto EQII. To say the lease…I’m hooked. I haven’t switched to another game in like a year + because its forever evolving and changing. It’s my outlet from a stressful day. But we are not alone I found this out. I play with women my own age to kids along with my friend and his wife.

I play Stick Arena by Xgen Studios. It is a flash based game so you can play it anywhere for free. It is always against 3 other online players and is basically a fighting game. Use the shotgun, AK-47, Glock, sword, baseball bat and sledgehammer to fight the other stick figures. My wife always has to hear about my latest escapades :) xgen Stick Arena
