Ideas for the tax-free weekend
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The tax-free holiday will have many of you limbering up your credit cards.
Keep in mind some advice from my friend Clark Howard: It isn’t a bargain unless you really need it and will use it.
For those of you looking for high tech back-to-school items, here’s a review of tech items suited for students at Cnet that covers everything from cellphones to computers. The same page also offers links to other school-related sites. I like this site a lot since it reviews all these items with the student in mind.
And if you find any real deals out there let me know and I’ll pass them along.

My problem with the tax free holiday is that it is scheduled too close to the start of the school year. Waiting until August means that all the schools supplies have been laid out. The stores won’t be getting anymore and if you can’t find it, you probably won’t be able to get it before school starts.
It’s like waiting until December 24 to do your Christmas shopping.

This year there are already some counties with school back in session. And on that note, the energy saving holiday should be rescheduled. A tax break on air conditioners in August is a bit after the fact as well…

It is useless in Rockdale County, where school started last Monday, 7/31.

In Henry Co. school started the same day as the tax holiday began. We also shopped early to ensure the correct supplies were still in stock.

Yeah, saving 60 cents on a 10 dollar purchase and spending $6 on gas to visit the stores. Stupid consumers will continue to be pulled in by such hypes. Unless you are making big purchases (which you cannot, because of the cap) this is a useless opportunity. How many of you know that there are umpteen online stores where you can get computers and peripherals for cheap and not pay sales taxes OR shiping. Its good to have unsophisticated customers. Imagine what will happen if everyone starts buying online , saving 60% or more and not paying sales tax.
The economy thrives on sales tax revenues so my message to buyers is “Keep buying more, because I am not”.

How many people spend hours of each day driving to/sitting in traffic at 0mpg in Atlanta to work? You want to talk about unsophisticated customers?

Later this morning I’ll be posting more information on back-to-school tech. It’s really unrelated to the tax-free holiday - I agree with the thought expressed by others here that buying smart is a lot more important than the tax savings. However, it’s great to be able to do both. Stay tuned, I’ll try to get the new entry up before noon.

All I want to know is: Are digital cameras something that you can purchase tax free? I see on the LISTS issued by the state of GA, that memory cards are NOT tax free… but I don’t see cameras. Does anybody know? Throw me a bone here — I am NOT a happy shopper and if I have to brave Worst Buy for a little bit of a deal on a camera, I would really really appreciate it if someone could help me.

reagan - I agree, the state list is useless. I want to buy a new microwave and a new tv… when I went to energystar.gov I found out TV’s have the energy star designation, but microwaves don’t seem to. Don’t see cameras on the website either, though who knows if the state’s list matches the federal governments.
I think woodgrane is onto something… shoes are a guarnteed savings, and more fun to shop for too!

Digital cameras are not on the exempt list, pHreddie. They’re specificially excluded in the bill itself. You’re right - this is confusing stuff - so I browsed through the bill. The digital camera reference is in section M. You can check out the bill online here.
