Men’s Hoops
Since my last blog, the men’s basketball team has played three games and lost them all.
Hosting Duke, the Jackets led by as much as eight points in the first half before fading and losing touch in the second half. The Dukies wound up winning by 14 points in a game where the Jackets missed 12 free throws (shooting 36.8% at the stripe). The Dukies missed 11 free throws themselves, but wound up taking 8 more charity shots.
One the road against the Wolfpack, the Jackets played hard and led by as much as ten points with 4:40 left in the game. But then the defense relaxed and State fought back to tie the game with 30 seconds left to play. The Wolfpack won overtime by five and the Jackets rang up another loss in a game where they shot 35% from the field…offsetting 55% behind the arc and 81% at the line.
Hosting Boston College, the Jackets fell down by as much as 14 points with 6:41 left but battled back and tied the game with 3:50 left…essentially a 14 point run in three minutes. The game then went back and forth before Shumpert hit a pair of free throws with 0:14 on the clock to send it into overtime. But again…the Jackets couldn’t close the deal and suffered their second overtime loss in three days.
So now the Jackets are 0-5 in the ACC and are set to face 16-2 and Top 10 Clemson…on the road…after Clemson got embarassed by UNC 94-70. That’s not a recipe for success.
All of your Tech “fans” who claim you wouldn’t complain about a bad season as long as we beat UGA. Do you still maintain that perspective? Would you consider 9-20 a successful season simply because we beat UGA? Would it be worth it?
Women’s Hoops
The ladies just upset #2 North Carolina 66-62 and are playing great basketball with a record of 14-4 overall. They travel to #4 Duke for a 1pm game on Sunday and look to end a streak of 28 straight losses to the Dukies.
I asked my daughter if she wanted me to buy more basketball tickets and got a very enthusiastic response. So I looked online and learned that GT alums can buy a season ticket for $30 and get a second one free. If they continue that promotion next year I’ll definitely buy a pair. Where else can you get AT point credit and two season tickets to a GT sport for $30?
For $50 you can get a “Women’s Sports Pass” which grants access to both women’s hoops and women’s volleyball. As the father of two young girls I think I’ll be looking at this very closely down the road…especially with the success MaChelle Joseph has been having lately.
Football Recruiting
Our current recruiting class of 20 commitments is rated #27 overall and #5 in the ACC by Scout.com.
The latest recruit, Lance Richardson, is a 6-2 safety out of South Carolina that made a splash in the recent South Carolina All Star game.
Does anyone else remember who the last “sleeper” recruit to sign with Georgia Tech out of South Carolina, after making a splash in an all star game?
Does the name Vance Walker ring a bell?
Go Jackets!

What happened to Godhigh? He said that he had made his verbal commitment and Scout had him on the list and then he disappeared? And did we give any walkons a scholarship this year?

Last I heard, Godhigh is coming to Tech as preferred walk-on, not a full scholarship. But then, what do I know?
Chris, I don’t know about other Tech fans, but what bothers me about this tema is not that it has lost…the guys obviously are playing hard. What bothers me is the lack of fundamentals, and the performance we are seeing with much heralded recruits. No other ACC team outside of Durham-Chapel Hill has 2 MsDonald’s All Americans on their team, and most that we have lost to have none. But losing is one thing, 20 plus turnovers a game and shooting less than 60% on free throws are basics that just shouldn’t be happening with a talented team.

i have emailed drad.
we are stuck with phew and it looks like an…
‘auto renewing contract’ from 04 that is way more than just comfy is a big issue. talk about drad having almost zero control over the men’s bb program.
thanks dave braineless.
we laugh at notre dame for locking up charlie weis yet we got ‘weiss’d’ ourselves.
at least charley weis has been doing better. at least charley weis knows how to coach.
in case anybody hasnt noticed… phew suddenly forgot how to coach when his two ‘white’ assistants went elsewhere after 04. so much for phew and his BCA.
didnt we hire a fb coach in the 90’s that forgot how to coach after his top assistants stayed at wcu? correct me if im wrong but bill lewis set our program back 10 years.
just like phew is doing now.
if phew was a real man he would step down after this year… like bobby c did … like tommy bowden did.

I don’t care what color they are, but if we have assistants who can’t teach offense or defense or tutor PGs, etc, then yes we need new ones. Agreed.
I also will beat the horse till it’s dead, but we will live and die with our PG play. Having good bigs is wonderful, but if you can’t control the ball or feed the bigs, then they are underutilized talent. Keep us stocked with three 3-5 star TRUE PG’s at all times and the rest will sort it’s self out.

Heck yeah, y’all still love your season! I mean come on, you beat Georgia! That makes your season in ANY sport, right? Time to get the rings made! F-ing mama’s boys. 51-7. 7 straight. 7 out of 8. Numbers are fun, huh? =)

The answer is obviously NO.
It is nice to beat UGA, but our overall record, national ranking and conference wins are definitely more important.
The future of the GT Football & GT Basketball programs are VERY bright!
Go GT!

joel, don’t be ignorant. The team didn’t “get rings because they beat UGA”. The team set goals at the beginning of the season and agreed THEN that if they achieved their goals, then they would reward themselves with rings commemerating some of the achievements….which INCLUDED (but not exclusively) beating UGA.
Get the story straight. I know you would like to have such self-importance as to think GT would get rings JUST because of UGA, but that is unfortunately not the case.
Pass the word to your fellow misinformed mutts.

Joel:
As long as we’re living in the past, how about 48 to ZERO and 8 straight. Look it up.
Also, let’s see…football-check. Men’s basketball-check. Women’s basketball-check. Hockey-check. Volleyball-check. You did beat us in cross-country. Don’t worry—there’s always baseball and softball.

What goals did Georgia Tech achieve this year other than beating Georgia? Tech fans claim that its not all about Georgia, but you always neglect to mention other accomplishments that the ring supposedly commemorates. I am honestly and innocently curious. What are those other accomplishments? And don’t give me some vague crap about exceeding expectations and how everyone thought you would go 0-12 this year. I want specifics. You give out rings and you better have a darned good reason for it. Otherwise it looks desperate and pathetic. I’m just being honest. I come in peace.

Frank- im sure you come in peace. This is something that PJ use to do at Navy and at GSU (the rings).

…and this is a serious question.
Just what “goals” did the Jackets accomplish in football this year other than beat UGA? They did not win their division, thus they did not win the conference championship. Hence, the buying of the rings to “reward” the team members for making “their goals” seems to be violation of NCAA rules, though there has been no mention of this. NCAA rules allow for the purchase if they win something of importance, and the bowls purchase such things for participants; but for just having success though not reaching any championship milestones? Navy is an independent, so the NCAA may let them slide; GSU won championships, so they were entitled. But for beating UGA, Miami, FSU and Clemson?
Since when is it permissible to give football team members a “reward” (an extra benefit to which “regular” students do not have access)for just having a winning season? Why doesn’t this “extra benefit” violate NCAA rules?

You are confused because you are stupid, and just trying to stir things up. They used the money from the Bowl game, and bought the rings for the players instead of whatever else they could have gotten (a few years ago they got the PSP for example). The players and coaches agreed on getting the rings, and their design. Are you still confused, or are you just pathetic and sore over your loss?

Haha, the only question is what score we put on next years rings.
I’m thinking 49-0, to beat the series record.

The bowl committee rewarded them for the ChikFilA ‘appearance’, which certainly makes no sense.

Every ring at Georgia Southern was earned for a definable goal such as a SoCon championship or a REAL national championship. I can’t believe PJ has taken on the lame, whiny ways of GT so quickly. They still reflect their school colors YELLOW, and can’t rustle up the cajones to play Georgia Southern. OUR six EARNED titles are more than your five (or is it four and a half?) MYTHICAL titles
