Great Season Ends on a Sour Note…

I hated how things ended at the Peach Bowl but that doesn’t erase the fact that this team far exceeded all expectations and rang up wins over Clemson, Miami, Florida State, and Georgia en route to a spectacular 9-4 record in Paul Johnson’s first year on the Flats.

I started the season holding out hope for a winning record and a bowl bid, any bowl bid.

We stumbled a few times because of youth, injuries, and a new system on both sides of the ball…that should have been expected. And it only really hurt and disappointed me AFTER my expectations had been raised by early success and big wins over rival programs.

The really exciting part is looking forward to 2009. The entire offense comes back with a ton of experience and we’ll be adding some recruits and at least one transfer player who are ready to contribute. Defensively we’re losing some great defensive linemen but the guys behind them played a huge number of snaps this season and will be ready. And the defensive secondary will return completely intact and with a ton of experience under their belts.

The future is most certainly bright. And if the guys I spoke to before the game are correct, there is real potential for some early commitments for the next recruiting class. Paul Johnson and his staff have made an impression and we’re going to be a recruiting power here in the state of Georgia. The days of UGA picking and choosing their recruits with little or no thought about Tech are coming to an end.

We talked a good bit about basketball during the Peach Bowl tailgate as well. Most of the comments and opinions aren’t suited for a family oriented blog here on the AJC. I’ll just say that the general concensus is that Georgia Tech has made the transition from basketball school to football school. I talked to more than one season ticket holder, who like myself, has simply lost interest in the basketball program and couldn’t even tell you when the next game is. Its hard to believe that we are just a little over 4 years removed from playing for the national title…

The football and basketball programs are good examples of how quickly the fickle fortunes of sports can change…who would have thought that the football team might win more games on the season than the basketball team?

Coach Hewitt has a great class coming in next year and is still the odds on favorite for the #1 basketball recruit in the country (Derrick Favors) but he’s going to be under extreme pressure to turn his recruiting prowess into wins…something we have lacked sorely since the 2004 run.

Go Jackets!

DRAD is going to have to do something about our BB coach. Our players are obviously poorly coached, and I am tired of underachieving. It is embarrassing.

Enough about BB. Our football team has been a wonderful blessing this past season, and I know that Coach Johnson will be able to do even more with the depth he will have next season.

I agree with the BB. I gave up my season tickets a couple of years ago, although I pass them on to true supporters of the program. That team is just not there and it is painful to watch. Unlike the team that made the run, they just don’t show up with any energy. And to hear PH say they have more energy than last year’s team makes me wonder. Does PH, whom I respect, understand that the 3-pointer is part of the game? Anyway, I just can’t even stand to watch anymore, although I will.

The football team should be fun. I am disappointed by the Peach Bowl ( which we should turn down in the future, no matter what), but we have a lot to look forward to. Every setback, the critics will be all over the offense, etc. but I think Mr. PJ will come up with adjustments or whatever to do what is necessary. We have some good years ahead.

I am very excited about the football teams hopes for next year. As am I hopeful that we can pull in a top 5 recruiting class for basketball this spring. On top of that though… I am very excited about our pre-season #12 baseball team that is returning A LOT of talent from last years team… Baseball season can not come sooner…

Cheers to a great football season GT!! Lots of “monkeys” were removed from our backs this football season … in particular FL State victory and (of course) victory over that unfortunate “other” Georgia school.

I say let there be no residue from the bowl game result … we got beat. There’s no other way to analyze it. Moving on to ‘09 with great momentum is no doubt CPJ’s agenda and he has the personality to instill that same attitude into the players and the program.

I’d hesitate to title GT as having “transitioned” from a basketball school to a football school. Good grief, for years now we have been a BASKETBALL school AND a FOOTBALL school!!! We should strive to re-instate high levels of achievement in BOTH sports (and ALL sports for that matter), for its that kind of balance that makes GT a great place to learn and play. I have no doubt that D-RAD is watching the Basketball team closely this season and taking auditing the situation. Go Jackets!!

It is obvious that Paul Hewitt has not developed any semblance of a team. We have individuals playing street ball. We have enough talent to at least stay in most of our ball games but this might not happen if a team philosophy is not developed. It is difficult to watch.

Congrats on a good season at Tech, watched the UA allstar game on ESPN, looks like Miami and Fla. State really racked up on some good players, Some already committed some haven’t, Did Tech have any verbal commits that were playing? Just curious. The Reid kid from Valdosta looked awesome, don’t know where he’ll end up but somebody getting a good ball player. Probably Florida.

It was just a fun year watching a Tech team that was not saddled with the worst coach in history, Chan Gailey. Although injuries and a complete system change kept Tech in check, the future is so bright we may all have to wear shades. What needs to be done during the off season is to make sure that any of Gailey’s players that still have the Gailey attitude are purged from the team. Coach Johnson has got to look at each player critically, and any one that deep down still has the Gailey funk must be purged. This coming year needs to be EVERYONE on the same page from day one. If we get the O-line performing, we will be virtually unstoppable. We need some linebackers that can plug the dang hole. Also, need some competition at kicker. We have the best coach in America. And, as always, Thank God and Greyhound that the sorriest coach in the history of the world is gone forever.

Your offensive skill position recruiting isn’t going to impress nor scare anyone. UGA will still cherry pick the best offensive talent in Georgia. You may have a chance to collect the chum that the rest of the SEC doesn’t want. Tech isn’t exactly lighting it up with defensive secondary talent either.

We made a gigantic leap forward during ‘08 in football. Yes, CPJ learned how NOT to prepare for a bowl game, and our voids/weaknesses are glaringly apparent. GOOD!!! Basketball is a 100% re-do.No quick fixes.Sure, a coaching change is obviously necessary. This stuff about being a football school vs. a bb school is rubbish.Anything worthwhile is worth the effort. Aspire to be the best in academics, football, basketball and “a clean campus”.Why not??? I am certain AD Rad agrees.

GT should have a great team in ‘09 with most of the offense returning. GT and Alabama should resume the rivalry. Johnson did a great job this year, but you won’t sneak up on anyone next year. Good to see GT competing again!

The reason the skill positions and DB recruiting is slack this year is due to all skill positions and the secondary being made up of already extremely talented freshmen and sophmores! Not to mention already a 4 star receiver and DB already in the class.

GT has one 4 star player committed and he’s a lineman Talent. And you gotta be kidding about that sterling secondary of yours. It sucks. And that is putting it kindly.

Go to GT’s official website for your list of commits. You’ll cry after you get there.

Sorry John. I was looking at Scout.com which lists both Roderick Sweeting and Stephen Hill as 4 star recruits. But will we go by which one you see fit!

As far as the secondary, it does not suck…it is called being young. Partially due to injuires. But I forget, only UGA can use the injury excuse. The only player in the secondary with experience led the nation in interceptions. You will see the talent there as they get more experience.

Speaking of crying…have you gotten the tears out of your eyes yet from UGA’s disappointing season?

By gt4ever

Yes, the true test will come in recruiting! If CPJ can’t recruit, well, there won’t be much football to talk about. I still can’t get over the LAME excuse for a football game at the Chick-Fila bowl. Our defense literally stunk up the place. Our offense literally stunk up the place. I have watched GT football for 30 years, and have yet to see such a POOR display! NO HEART, NO PRIDE! Truly EMBARRASSING! Kinda reminded me of a Chan Gailey coached team! It’s NO wonder we can’t fill up our stadium! Who in their right mind would want to watch CRAP like that?

By John

Keep believing your lying eyes and drinking that kool-aid Talent. Unless Morgan Burnett can play every position at once, it ain’t getting any better. You get what you recruit. Unfortunately for Tech that is practically nothing in that secondary. Of course you could always bring back that rapist you lost prior to the season. That would be vintage Tech, ala Rueben Houston.

Sure haven’t Talent. A 10 win season at UGA gets tears. A 9 win season at Tech gets rings for all. What do you losers get in the unlikely event of a 10 win season at Tech, a ticker tape parade down Peachtree?

John, the player you mentioned has only been charged with rape…and he was suspended at that moment. At UGA he would have been allowed to play until convicted. Then probably suspended two games. The 1st and 2nd game of the year. Unless the 2nd is an SEC game…then the 1st and 3rd games.

UGA fan’s taking shots for players “allegedly” commiting crimes…does it get any more ridiculous!!! Worry about the thugs on you team!!!

It does not all have to do with “number” of wins. Yes I am excited about a team that won 9 games and was expected to when 3. Next year I will not be happy with 9 wins.

It’s not the fact that UGA won 10 games, it is the fact all we heard all summer was UGA national champs, SEC champs, no way Tech beats the might dawgs. Idiots!!!

OK infantile Tech nerds…gather ‘round and listen to ya daddy. When are you pointed heads gonna realize that the “once in a decade” win over UGA was a fluke of historic proportions? We hung 42 on you and our defense stayed in the dorm. Surely, the LSU game made it painfully obvious that you guys are not ready for “prime time, big daddy SEC caliber football”. As I have said in this space before…. back out the FSU brainfart goal line fumble and UGA’s 2nd half, defensive vacation, and you guys are a “run of the mill” 7-6 team. Coach Paula Johnson is a very decent head coach, (though now grossly overpaid for his ability grade) but the triple fumble offense will always put the ball on the ground against fast, well-schemed defenses. Paula can out-coach the Academies….but he is outmatched against the beasts of the SEC. And lets face it, the half full high school stadium is hardly an intimidating place for opponents to fear. In fact, opponents come into your place with a swagger because it reminds them of when they were high school superstars.Let me give you 5 most certain automatic losses on your schedule next year……BC, Clemson, VT, FSU, and of course….a severe embarrassing vengeful drubbing by UGA in the high school stadium. Throw in a few more triple fumbles, and I’m telling you 7-6 is wishful thinking. Remember, ya daddy told ya so.

PJohnson will eventually get an option QB that can also pass. When that happens, no team will be able to put 9 in the box, unless they like to be picked apart with the pass.

Fact 1: How many “passing” option QBs are there in any recruiting year nationwide. Passing is something coached and refined. Option QBs focus 90% of their time practicing the option.

Fact 2: History will work against you. Go back through PJ’s career and you will see that he seldom if ever has good defenses. In his arrogance he thinks his offense is going to control the ball and outscore everyone. Won’t happen at this level. LSU proved it. And PJ is forced to put his best athletes on the offensive side of the ball and his defense gets the scrum.

Fact 3: Tech will never recruit the type of athletes that it takes to be solid on both sides of the ball. History bears that out. Don’t believe me. Take a look at your 2009 class. WhenChan Gailey’s skill players are gone your cupboard will be basically bare. A bunch of fullbacks will never beat the LSUs of the world.

Fact 3: We will never know whether I am right or wrong. Does a 1 mil buyout in the first year only of PJ’s contract turn the light on for you? After a few more Les Miles type beatdowns, and there will be several of those every year, PJ will take his fragile ego and arrogant attitude elsewhere. The Chick Fil A Bowl is what Tech can look forward to if they manage to beat enough ACC teams to get to that tier. In the long run, that Johnson offense will embarrass itself past the point that even Tech fans can tolerate in spite of being used to being a whipping boy for the rest of the college football universe.

Athens — Georgia assistant coach Rodney Garner said the opportunity to work for “a great man” trumped the chance to work with “a great coordinator.”

“The lure of Tennessee was Monte Kiffin,” Garner told the AJC on Monday. “That was a major attraction, wanting to just be a sponge and just soak up all the knowledge I could from a great defensive coordinator.”

But Garner’s respect and admiration for Richt and belief in what the Bulldogs are doing meant more.

“The attraction of Georgia to me is Mark Richt,” Garner said. “I’m going to be honest with you, I love the community and I love the institution, but I work for a great man and that’s the main reason I stayed.”

When a subordinate turns down a 150,000.00 raise and gives this as the reason, it says everything anyone needs to know about the HC at UGA.

From Tony’s column:

And while I’m at it, let me get this off my chest as we start the New Year. There is a reason that coaches work where they work and it’s not always about money. It’s about a quality of life. Garner and Searels like and respect the man they work for and they like the quality of life in Athens. In the “disappointment” of a 10-3 season there have been some on this blog who have tried the characterize Richt as some sort of choirboy who doesn’t have the gravitas to go head to head with the Urban Meyers and Nick Sabans of the world.

Gently put, you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. And the decisions by Garner and Searles prove it.

Thank you Tony Barnhart. In spite of the classless and tasteless remarks made by fellow Tech fans, this is the absolute truth. Tech guys are supposed to be smart. If they are they didn’t need to read this. They already knew. If they didn’t, well……

observation: get over the gt-uga bull. expect more from your school and stop making it all about uga. it gives them too much credit and they don’t deserve it. winning felt great but for all of you ga natives, folks in other areas of the country don’t care about this game. and lots…yes, lots don’t care about uga. now acc championships get noticed. our goals should be higher and mean more than one lousy game with rednecks.

second observation: gt needs to address other areas of concern like what our half time looks like, how our spring game looks terrible and how some of the non football players on the field are not up to the task (delicately speaking about lack of ability on various members of various groups and on and on). Recruiting in other areas needs work. and don’t say this is not about football cause all of us go wanting to see a PACKAGE and in some ways gt really fails in that. if you want to be taken seriously, interest in the whole picture needs to be stepped up. presentation matters and we don’t do a good job on that. dont you think 17 and 18 year old recuits notice that? they see the “show” at uga and it blows them away. GT needs the “show”.

Hey “RealityKicksIn” (from 1/6 - 9:56am)…..Nice Fact 2 there, idiot.

Ya know, I’ve looked at PJ’s coaching career. 2008 at Tech marked his 12th as a Head Coach. Hmmm, a 116-43 record ain’t too shabby! And this recrod includes his first season at Navy, 2-10, his ONLY losing season in 12 years. Yep, 9.67 Ws and 3.58 Ls avg will get the job done. Take out the 2-10 season, and we’re looking at 114-33 (10.36 Ws and 3 Ls). WOW, looks like he needs the #1 D in the country to be able to WIN!

Now, “RealityKicksIn” why don’t you take a look at PJ’s ENTIRE coaching career, and take a gooooood look at what happens to the teams when he is part of the coaching staff.

Em- That tremendous coaching record was in Div. IA and at Navy. That’s just a step above High School.
