Peach Bowl Thoughts…

First, lets get this “45-42” ring silliness out of the way.

The school gifted the team with a ring commemorating the 2008 season. The players elected to include the score of their biggest rivalry game as a highlight of the season. I don’t see anything wrong with that. If memory serves correctly, the 1998 team had a similar ring that listed ACC Champion and 21-19 on there as well.

When your two major goals for the season are to win your conference and beat your rival, I would tend to think that you would commemorate those achievements…

I really don’t understand why its developed into a story that warrants comment from UGA players, of all people.

Getting back to the business of serious football topics:

LSU fans don’t appear to be very confident in their chances tomorrow night, especially if you read the message boards. They have very little confidence in their defensive discipline.

Georgia Tech fans seem very confident and point to healed injuries and increased offensive efficiency in their last two games against Miami and Georgia.

Personally I still have flashbacks to the 2000 Peach Bowl when Tech dominated the first half only to be undone by turnovers and a kid named Rohan Davey in the second half. And I continually remind myself that LSU is still the defending national champion and has a roster full of talent.

Ultimately this will be a real test of whether or not this Georgia Tech team can survive prosperity. Its time to be the favorite and step up and take control and get that 10th win so that we can go into the off season on a high note and make a case for a good preseason ranking going into 2009.

Because make no mistake…given the way the BCS and ranking works these days, you MUST be included in the conversation early in the season if you want a chance to do something huge. Teams can’t come from out of nowhere like GT did in 1990 and rise to the top.

Wednesday night should be considered the first step in setting the tone for 2009…because a convincing win over LSU might result in a legitimate Top 10 preseason nod for Paul Johnson’s second campaign on the Flats.

This game scares me b/c Jefferson is a mobile qb similar to that of VT’s qb. And I wonder if CPJ will insert a little bit of the run and shoot. I hope not b/c I wish for them to use what get them there. We always have 2009 season to utilize the passing packages. I just don’t think LSU can remained disciplined long enough to contain both Dwyer and Roddy Jones but our defense needs to contain this frosh QB for LSU b/c he is very mobile. Miles is just as arrogant as they come and I would love nothing more than for a humble CPJ to raise that trophy in front of Miles and his ego which might fill up sections that LSU couldn’t buy up.

By Gary LeJeune

Hoopla, Jefferson will run and throw you to death and our defense will improve enough to keep you scoring at will. Les will have the Tigers ready to play and host the trophy again. By the way, we sold 14,000 tickets and gave away 1k to the military — how can you with Tech talk smack about fan support since you have trouble selling out your own home games.

Gary, Tech sold their initial allotment of 17,000 in a few days. I had to get my tickets from the LSU allotment via contacts I have.

I was at that 2000 Peach Bowl. Still haunts me. I believe that bad memory will be wiped away before the New Year Rings in.

3-0 against the mighty SEC. Perhaps we should have stayed in. Actually I will have to admit that Tech should never have left the SEC.

Matching a 9 win team and a 7 win team and calling it a good matchup says a lot about the quality of the conference the 9 win team plays in. If the ACC had to play equivalently ranked opponents within each conference they might not ever win a bowl game.

Chris,

You are on the freaking AJC staff..by including the ring “story” in your opening remarks you perpetuate the story. At least you point out it is for the season and not just for the win over UGA. For Tim Tucker to ask UGA players their thoughts about it is a slap in the face to them.

The AJC continues to have little class. You take a story and morph the living SH%T out of it.

But thanks for calling it the PEACH BOWL. Just like anything in this town, someone at “corporate” decides to rewrite or erase history. Chick-fil-a is a good company for the most part but regarding the PEACH BOWL, I put them in the same category as General SHERMAN.

Tech will win if we come out and avoid mistakes, especially early. Unless Les Miles has some secret ingredient to get his guys to play hard, I see them caving in by the 3rd quarter. TECH 38, LSU 21

The BC/Vandy matchup does kind of jump out at you doesn’t it. Top SEC teams play equally ranked teams or teams with higher rankings in the upper level Bowls. This is another way that the ACC hurts itself in the area of prestige and status. Until we start playing the better teams in Bowl games we will be considerede a substandard conference and rightfully so. Tech is now in a position of losing to a 7 win SEC team and having it said that they weren’t that good anyway or winning the game and the rest of the football universe saying, “so what”. Ole Miss would have been a better matchup for us in that regard. And speaking of Ole Miss, look who they get in their Bowl game.

Dman, we did play an equivalently ranked SEC team. UGA is the 3rd best team in the SEC, 2nd best team in the SEC East, and we beat you in your stadium 45-42. So that makes a 9-3 ACC team better than a 9-3 equivalently ranked SEC team, right?

we don’t have much control over bowl match ups. all we can do is keep the ACC headed in the right direction and it will play out in the next couple of years. With Tech, UNC and FSU on the rise, and VT just having a rebuilding year, and Maybe Clemson or Maryland being able to have a good year here and there, the ACC is starting to shape up into where it should be

By Art

Tech’s rise will only last as long as the CPJ era. 1 mil buyout, 1st year only doesn’t bode well for the Jackets. But the ACC does need to renegotiate some of these matchups, especially in the level of bowl that Tech is in this year. On paper Tech has nothing to gain and everything to lose in this game with LSU.

SST,

Since we are having a history lesson, perhaps you want to give back that 1980 MNC on behalf of your pups that were completely abusing their own players in route to that MNC and numerous sec championships.

I dare you to argue that it wasn’t “against the rules” then. No, it was your uga program that was the center of the scandal. It was uga and their lack of morals of your athletic administration that caused the NCAA to have to impose rules to ban the exploitation of “students” for the “Glory Glory to all…”

Slavery wasn’t “illegal” prior to the Civil War, but that didn’t make it any less appauling.

So shut up with your violations talk and live hear and now. You are a p** poor sport and just can’t take it that while your were on the Tech boards boasting all year about how uga was going to wreck Tech and uga was going to win the BCS, CPJ was coaching his players and preparing to spoil your salvage game for the season.

Since you had the gall to bring up grades, perhaps you should go back and look at the investigative reposts that the AJC has been running with regard to BCS schools acedemics. You will see that while Tech tops the charts in many of the categories, your pups are still having to allow in excess of 73% special admission to just 6.2% for Tech. Take into account that the special admission is based on the admission standards for the school and the Tech’s standards are higher to begin with…do you need futher explanation?

So take your weak, poor sport attitude somewhere else. You were poor sports when you were winning, I don’t know why we would expect any different from you when you lose.

What’sUP, actually Tech was 2nd in the ACC Coastal and LSU 3rd in the SEC West. And the CFA bowl has tried to get the SEC to give them 1st choice after the BCS bowls like the ACC has done, so that would have put Ole Miss vs GT, which everyone would have preferred. We’ve already beat the 2nd in the East, we’d love have a shot at 2nd in the west.

Love reading how the uga fans were all high and mighty before the season started. Now they are running and tryingto hide behind momma sec. I don’t know if you checked your sources, but the ACC dominated the sec 6-4 in head to head match ups this season.

Also of note, I remember how uga fans were crying last year about being locked out of the sec championship and thereby the BCS championship last year. “We deserve to be in the BCS Championship! We deserve to be in the BCS championship!” That’s all we heard at the end of the season last year.

Tech was the highest ranked team in the ACC and failed to make the ACC Championship game. The only person I have heard comment on it was Herbstreet(sp?) He found it difficult to understand. Well, it has happened a number of times since the inception of the championships and the BCS. Oklahoma went to the BCS without winning or playing in their conference championship several years ago and jilted Auburn if memory serves me. I believe that uga was ranked ahead of UT last year and LSU prior to the sec championship. LSU jumped uga after they beat UT and got into the BCS. Poor little puppies.

My point was that you don’t hear Tech complaining about not having gotten into the ACC Championship and likely the Orange Bowl. Infact Roddy Jones was being interviewed after the uga game and mentioned to the reporter that we just have to wait and see. The reporter broke the news to him and he didn’t flinch. He knew that we had just not gotten it done when we were supposed to. He knew that nothing is owed to you, you have to earn it. He will earn it.

Ok, wasted enough time on here. See you at the Dome tonight.

Yeh BuzzFactor it stings a little. But only for a short while. Because as sure as the sun rises in the east things always return to normal. Truth be told, you Tech fans always have your panties in a wad because you know exactly that. That Tech will win 1 maybe 2 games per decade against UGA and you are nothing more than a bunch of football patsies for UGA to bit%h slap around. No coach ever stays at Tech. It’s not a destination job. That’s just fact. And when the coach you have now held out for 2 weeks to get that 1,000,000.00 buyout for the 1st year of his 7 year deal only, what’s that tell you. Some of you don’t even need a calculator to figure that one out. Yeah, getting beat by the whipping boys of college football hurts for about 365 days, but with you Tech fans living with the truth for the rest of your lives really hurts doesn’t it. Tech will always be the hind t** sucker in the state of Georgia. That’s just fact.

The bowl people got trapped this year by their own formula. After FL and AL, the SEC is a crap conference and the bowls have to stick with their promises to the SEC which shouldn’t win but one or two bowl games this season as their teams are not the quality of the opponents. DESTINATION JOB: Who are you kidding ? Money is the only object and as long as Alabama pays Saban 5 million a year and as long as Arkansas calls every coach in the country and begs them to take their crap job by doubling the going rate for coaches destination vs non destination doesn’t make a difference. Your CMR will leave when the right job comes up because he knows he can’t win a nat champ at THUGA.

Hey Fred I didn’t say they the Big Ten is weak but all the SEC and media experts here do. Why do think Penn State had no mention of Championship chances. The belief is, due to Ohio State being blown out the lasst two years, the whole conference is weak. The idea of the poat was to demonstrate the idiotness of comparing the Tech matchup with the Ga matchup considering the thinking of those who think the only real football is played in the SEC. Also see my post on how Ole Miss has run from the Tech option. If a team shows they are good they want to run and hide. Also remember auburn running from FSU several years ago. Sometimes there are good reasons to back out of a contract, see Army and Ga tech last year, But SEC teams do it because they are scared of losing the idea they are the greatest in the world. If people think the Big Ten iss weak they should schedule some and find out.

If Tech throws it more, the chance of INT’s is there, and as always, fumbles can hurt us. Keep the turnovers under 3 and we win. GT 38 - LSU 24. With 3 or more turnovers, LSU pulls one out.

Also I’ll take the history of my program any day. 4 national champs, 15 conference titles, 48 all-americans, .598 winning %, John Heisman. Tech is nothing more than his ticket to a real football power. By the way. Tech will never be anyone’s destination job. Win there in those sorry environs and you go up the food chain. Lose and you never get another good job as an HC anywhere. Tech is a notorious graveyard for coaching carerrs. How many coaches is it you guys have had since let’s say, 1970? 14, 15. How many is it. Joe Hamilton Arrested Well, what’s the best way to kill your career one week after you joined your alma-mater? Get arrested for:

  1. DUI
  2. Open container
  3. Marijuana possesion
  4. Hit-and-run.

Not one of the four. Try four out of four. I think “tragic” is too light-hearted a word to describe this situation.

You can put this one right up there with Rueben Houston, Jarrard Tarrant, and heroin Ods when you talk about the integrity of the Tech athletic program. Oh, let us not forget 17 ineligibles and the biggest case of academic fraud in ACC history. Are you guys off of probation yet?

By ryan

My bad little joe, you are correct you didn’t get a management degree. But just one question, did you get it while playing football or did you come back and earn it long after you were elibigle? Joe Hamilton’s worthless degree is called History, Technology, and Society. I bet your football team gives out a lot of these. Another little tidbit. During George O’Liary’s last year only 3 players…THREE…were enrolled in the Engineering program. When you mites bray and crow about your academics as they relate to the football team, you are either ignorant of the facts or telling a bald face lie. Some of your 17 ineligibles had less than 2 years toward graduation after 5 years on campus. Yeh buddy. Some academic excellence that turned out to be.

Au contraire Ryan. Joe needed a degree to get that job at Tech. So whose to say he didn’t get a little assistance along the way. The Athletic Department thought he would be a huge asset with recruiting and PR and did you ever stop to think that immediately after being handed his diploma he was on the payroll? You techies aren’t anywhere close to being the lily pures you portray yourself to be. Based your academic probation, felony arrests, and drug issues, a case could be made that you are the cesspool of the ACC. You let Miami and FSU off the hook big time.

This game has my nerves on EDGE! It has been forever since we have seen our team play. Our offense seems to thrive on rhthym and we’ve been sooooo long between games. Can this young team post 10 wins? Have our expectation levels risen to unreasonable levels? LSU has tons of talent… can they put it all together tonight?? The extra practice time probably doesn’t hurt… us OR them. Can’t wait to watch, even if I’m looking between my fingers as I cover my eyes! :-)

Dan said “Anyway, CPJ is just a temporary employee and you guys know it.”

I give CPJ more credit than that. He stayed at Navy for 5 years, because he enjoyed it he was treated well and the deal was pretty fair. IMHO, he left because of the administration’s change in attitude about sports among other things, i.e. the Brigade’s attendance at away games, etc. CPJ would never say that, of course.

He likes the South, he likes Georgia and if he is treated well and that includes in a big way the adminstration’s attitude toward his program, he will stay, at least until he can accomplish no more.

It is almost sad how hopeful tech fans became after that “triumphant victory” over their hated, better big brother from Athens.

Have fun making those rings losers! And yes, I believe that story. Tech’s fans and athletes after the Georgia victory acted like WWII just ended or that Christ himself came back walking on water at Lake Lanier. Just pathetic!

A Georgia win or loss doesn’t matter much today. The season was over when those underachievers decided to lose to a high school team. But what happened last night?????? Let’s just say that bodes well for all of those that hate and have no respect for Tech.

By Big Hog

January 2, 2009 12:51 PM | Link to this

The number one problem this year with GT has been the offensive line. Teams that got a good push could blow up the offense. It showed up in the spring game and continued all year. The line has to be able to block to give the QB time to throw as well as run the option effectively. I came to the homecoming game and that was the fundamental problem I observed in that game. The offensive line must improve for this team to get better. The kicking game also needs some work. I still don’t understand why place kickers don’t get offered scholarships very often. Any player who can win a game for you is very important. Get the best one possible.

I wonder if the Advocate writers who probably received their degree from Schmill U would like their crow baked, fried, sauteed or in a gumbo like their brains.

Dear Chik-fil-a Bowl Chairman,

While LSU appreciates your Bowl’s hospitality and Atlanta is a wonderful city, your continuing contract with the ACC is a concern for me and I expect other SEC teams who may be unfortunate enough to have to play a lesser than expected opponent. As you know, your Bowl gets the #3 ACC team and the #5 SEC team. One would think such a match-up would be at least competitive or at least I thought so until Wed. night with about 55 minutes to go into the game.

We at LSU look at bowl games as an opportunity to play a good team at the end of the year as a starting off point for spring practice and the next season. To be blunt, we could have played any number of local high school teams and been challenged at least for a quarter. As it was we essentailly prepared and travelled and really didn’t play in a game any reasonable person might call football. I would call it more of a snuff film actually. Frankly, I am concerned for the physical and mental well-being of the opponent and I am afraid that an SEC coach could be sued by the Humane Scoiety or taken to the Hague for violations of human rights should such mismatches be continued. Counsel for the LSU Athletic Department cited at least 34 examples of conduct that would be considered torture under the Geneva Conventions in the first quarter alone. He asked me to write this letter and to notify certain interested parties so as to avoid furture liability for what may be considered cruelty by some observers.

The fourth quarter fake field punt was an unfortunate by-product of this mismatch. And please don’t blame me for that. I had given up actually coaching and was drinking adult beverages beginning sometime in the first quarter. One of our coaches had pulled a seven year old wearing a LSU sweater out of the stands at the begining of the fourth quarter and turned it over to him. Turns out he was a little more agressive than we had anticipated. Sorry about that.

In any event, the bottom line is that the SEC #5 team is clearly disadvantaged by playing the ACC’s #3 team and that needs to be addressed ASAP. My thought is to open it up to bowl qualifying teams from the WAC or the Mountain West or Conference USA. The #5 team in any of those conferences would clearly be superior to what we saw on New Year’s Eve.

I appreciate your listening and addressing my concerns.

Sincerly,

Les Miles

Great job Jackets. LSU totally embarrassed and OUTCLASSED you on the field. And what was with the fake punt? Talk about a frantic move. Sheesh. I DO understand why the team got rings this year (and it was not ONLY for beating UGA) but because you had a memorable year. THAT is something to celebrate because memorable years on the flats are few and FAR between these days. I WILL give you credit though because you DON’T expect each new coach to be the reincarniation of Bobby Dodd as the BAMA fans expect each new coach to be the next Bear Bryant. All of that said, (seriously) you DID have a year to be proud of and P.J. is a quality coach. See ya next year on the flats.

Well since you slide rule nerds like equations:

If MWC > SEC then after the game against LSU that must equal:

SEC>ACC so:

MWC > SEC > ACC

how is it from the bottom looking up?

Did the ACC win any of their bowel games?

Hey Chris, it looks like the Yellow Jackets lost their Chic-Fil-A nuggets in the game Wednesday night.

Too funny!

As for the rings - it is a sad commentary on Tech football. Other teams get them for championships, but since that is never going to happen at Tech….

all your attempts to whatever still cannot erase 45 to 42.

You guys now know the secret….practice for a month without a ball…and you might stop the perfect option….can a dog do that? Doubt it!

By next year...dog answer to everything

sec winning all those games sure does make 45 to 42 seem a lot better for a dog.

It will feel better when it quits hurting. Maybe mat & no will forget about all that $$$ and come back to try again…but remember gailey is gone.

Tech expects to be a better academic institution and to have a better football team than UGA. Thats what we’re in business to do. When either dosen’t happen we’ve failed. We don’t ask permission for these goals. They are what the are. Don’t be jealous of Joe Hamilton just because UGA hasn’t had a Heisman candidate in 25 years. Its hard to see what UGA gets from their recruiting effort anyway.
