Awards Abound for Yellow Jackets…

The entire team received a bid to the Peach Bowl (I refuse to call it the “Chik-fil-A Bowl”.)

Paul Johnson has been named the ACC Coach of the Year. (Was there any doubt?)

Jonathan Dwyer has been named the ACC Player of the Year. (474 yards and 7 TDs in his last four games was the strong showing needed to seal this very warranted recognition, putting Dwyer in the elite company of Joe Hamilton and Calvin Johnson.)

Darryl Richard has been awarded the Tatum Award, given to the top senior student-athlete amongst the ACC’s football players. (Richard was a high school valedictorian and a national finalist for the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy coming out of highschool, even before his very impressive academic showing at Tech, so this is no surprise.)

Roddy Jones was named the AT&T All-America Player of the Week after receiving over 19,000 text message votes from college football fans all over the country. (He’s still running laps in Sanford Stadium…in case you were wondering…)

And perhaps most impressively…

Michael Johnson has been named to the American Football Coaches Association All American Team at the defensive end position. (Chip Towers didn’t mention this in his article touting Knowshon Moreno’s inclusion on the same list…)

The team’s bowl bid, Johnson’s coaching recognition, and the individual player awards are simply icing on the cake that was a 9-3 season. No matter what happens in the Peach Bowl this has been a great season and sets a high water mark for bigger and better things in the future.

Go Jackets!

I have respect for UGA’s football fans, but some of the doggies posting on Tech blogs need to learn some humility.

You only played four good teams this year and your team lost three of them. I’ll give you credit for a good win over LSU.

Beating AZ St didn’t really show much. Squeaking by KY, Aub, SC and Vandy surely isn’t very impressive either.

Now pipe down accept that this just wasn’t your year.

Why be mad at Clemson? You guys were the first choice in the progression of the bowl teams after the BCS, so it is not Clemson’s fault that the chicken guys wanted Tech over everybody else.

Besides, the crew in J-ville KNEW that since Tech did not bring anyone their two years ago to play in the ACC CHAMPIONSHIP game that they probably would not bring anyone there this year.

Chip’s a UGA beat writer. Why would he rub the salt of Michael Johnson’s award in their already wounded hides? Maybe there should have been an article from one of the AJC sports columnists highlighting BOTH awards.

Lakerat, thanks for the congrats. Any successful season (or unsuccessful one for that matter) can swing on a few plays one way or another. If you want to talk plays, take away the penalty that kept the VT 4th quarter drive alive and the Roddy Jones fumble against UNC and maybe Tech is 11-1. Football is a funny game. The ball isn’t round, so it can bounce funny ways at times.

razer - Truth is, Clemson’s team and their record may not have warranted a bowl bid, but their fans (rednecks that they are) earn them bowl bids because of their dogged following of the team. Bottom line is that they show up in numbers. We Tech fans should learn a lesson from that. (I know, Clemson’s a bigger school…..)

Mr. One for Eight - 45-42, our Seniors are going out winners. How about yours?

…If a school (Tech) has more students TOTAL than another school (Clemson) wouldn’t it make sense for that larger school (Tech) to have more alumni (those who really go to the games - and who follow the team on the road) - undergraduate numbers do not matter, since they do not pay a lot to buy tickets home or away. The total number of living alumni is what matters when it comes to supporting sports teams. It is a good thing Tech has an excellent engineering school - your math needs some work - but then don’t you need math in engineering, too!

To what small fan base do you refer? As outlined on this blog, GT is a larger university than Clemson, yet Clemson does not have problems getting 75K - 83K for home games, while Tech DOES have problems getting 45K to Bobby Dodd consistently. And, surely you will not try to say that Clemson has more wealthy alumni who can afford to go!

Sometimes I find UGA fans trolling on the GT blogs irritating. But this week it doesn’t bother me at all. A few of them are sports fans enough to recognize last Saturday’s game as one of the greatest games in the hisory of the rivalry. They happened to come out on the short end of the stick, but the UGA players have no reason to hang their heads. They fought hard until the end.

That is the whole point - Clemson is a town of about 2000 - they have to come from all over SC and GA in order to fill the stadium, and they do! Here in Atlanta most fans for GT only have to travel at most an hour, and they still would rather NOT support the team - perfect example is Pi$$onaDawg!

Hey, its all in the numbers, guys. ACC was 6-4 against SEC. ACC has 4 ranked teams in the final BCS of the regular season. SEC only has 3. ACC has 10 bowl eligible teams. SEC only has 8. True, ACC does not have anyone on a par with Alabama and Florida, but after them, SEC drops off very fast.

M, I didn’t think I’d ever say this, but you’re spot on: D-Rad is the one making it possible. He’s doing a lot of good for Tech. I hope we’re not the minors for him. I don’t care if we don’t have the highest paid coach in football, but I want to see D-Rad get paid.

As for all the recognition, I don’t get why none of the writers think Burnett should get any credit? He leads the nation in interceptions yet finishes second in his own conference, WTF? I know people don’t want to give too much love to Tech’s D, but the simple truth is that we had no less than 5 players this year that will be drafted in the first three rounds when they make it to the draft (Burnett and Morgan will go 1st round and 2nd round in two years).

They won 7 in a row over you and you were STILL talking trash about UGA before this year’s game. You hadn’t beaten them in forever. Yet, the second you squeak out one win by three points they aren’t supposed to say anything about Tech. You act like you own them. That sounds like a load of bullcrap to me.

“our Seniors are going out winners. How about yours?”

Our seniors have won an SEC championship, played in two BCS bowls, and contributed to two Top 10 finishes in the polls. They have been one of the most successfal senior classes in Georgia history. And, most important of all, they are 3-1 vs. the Joke by Coke. They still own you free in clear. In other words, they crap all over your seniors. Thanks for asking.

I didn’t read through the rest of the comments, but the difference between GT and Clemson (“Auburn with a lake”, according to the only Dawg I ever liked, Lewis Grizzard) is that GT is in Atlanta, and so are her alumni, whereas Clemson is in, well, Clemson, Appalachia of South Carolina. If you are ANYWHERE near the Upstate, a Clemson game is the best thing going. A Saturday in Atlanta has many more options and distractions than Upstate South Carolina. A GT alum in Atlanta (nor the residents) just doesn’t have the “draw” to a GT football game as do the Clemson Tigers.

By texaswreck

Nebraska has not had an unsold seat since 1962- the reason is that they have nothing else going on, or their program has had a serious run of excellence, terminated by the hiring of Callahan?? Clemson draws heavily even when they stink because they are the event, simple enough. That is not a knock, just a fact. Likewise, Tech fans have not exactly had exciting teams to go watch every year, more like every three or four.
And, at the end of the day, we over performed this year, while Georgia, predicted national champion, couldn’t win their rival game or their in state game, so go away to where ever you are playing and enjoy your loss.

By Charlotte Jacket

December 7, 2008 3:28 PM | Link to this

It occurred to me this morning that we’re seeing a lot of smack from UGA fans about how they go to the Peach Bowl in rebuilding years while it’s the highlight of Tech fans’ lives.

A little perspective: 2001: Mark Richt’s first season - Overall regular season: 8-3 - Bowl: Music City, lost to BC - Beat Georgia Tech in Atlanta - Overall record: 8-4

2008: Paul Johnson’s first season - Overall regular season: 9-3, tied for division title - Bowl: Peach, opponent and result to be determined - Beat UGA in Athens - Overall record: 10-3 or 9-4

I’m not going to predict national championships or seven-year winning streaks against UGA, but I am very pleased to have ACC Coach of the Year Paul Johnson wearing White and Gold! Great first year with loads of talent coming back. Buy season tickets and show up, Jackets. He won’t stay forever unless we support him.

THWG 45-42! OK fellow Tech fans, here’s the scoop. The reasons “NoShow” won All-American honors are: Ga runs a one Tailback O. D knew he was coming on every running play. He caught a lot of balls out of the backfield. He was on ESPN a lot. Dwyer is a better runner, maybe not as well rounded as “NoShow”. If I’m picking players, I choose Dwyer. 5 years from now, Dwyer is All-Pro, Moreno is a return specialist.

Let’s not get carried away guys. People were saying the same things about me. In 1998 we were 10-2, finshed in the top 10, and shared the ACC title. We returned the majority of the team in 1999 yet managed to only go 8-4. The 1998 season was the only time I had a 10 win season and the only time I had a team finish in the top 10. In my last season at Tech, we started in the preaseason top 10 yet lost 5 games. I was the coach during our longest winning streak against UGA since the Dodd era and I was probably responsible for the demise of Donnan at UGA. that didn’t work out as well as we had hoped. The first year after Donnan was fired, we lost the first what would be the first of the former 7 game losing streak against UGA. I could see what was coming and I decided to get the he!! out of Dodge after that year. Despite my 3 game winning streak against UGA, I too had a losing record against UGA.
