Wear White and Bring a Toy

Two things about tomorrow night…

1) The 8th Annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive!

Charities like Toys for Tots will struggle during a down economy this coming Christmas. Drives like the one remembering Michael Isenhour are going to be crucial to making sure that struggling families and children have something to enjoy and remember this holiday season.

Bring a new, unwrapped toy or donation with you and drop it in the bin at the gate as you enter Bobby Dodd Stadium. The student athletes give alot of effort to this event and our alum and fans should as well.

2) Wear White

With all due respect to Ken Sugiura, his latest article here on the AJC.com isn’t representative of the Tech fanbase. Outside of a few vocal dissenters on a few internet message boards, the Georgia Tech community will very likely support the White Out effort. The reality is that the same tired internet posters make the same tired complaints over and over again. Its a classic case of a vocal minority.

I can recount those tired complaints off the top of my head without much effort:

Its too cold to wear white! Waaaah waaaah waaaah…come on, there’s no crying in football. Can anyone get any more pathetic than this? I’ll be wearing thermals under a white hoodie sweatshirt. Its not brain surgery! You would think Tech fans would have a little creativity and ingenuity. Obviously not…

I don’t want to spend money on new gameday gear! Yeah…because that white sweatshirt at Wal Mart is so expensive. Cheapskates like the people who make this complaint are part of the reason that our football team doesn’t get the support it deserves. No wonder we can’t sell the stadium out…our fans won’t even pony up for non-branded white clothing.

We shouldn’t copy UGA! Wake up…UGA was copying Penn State and Texas A&M with their blackout. You’re giving the mutts too much credit. Its not about who did it first…its about supporting the program and team and having a little fun.

I’d rather wear my gold, blue, grey, khaki, black gear that I already have! This one doesn’t really surprise me since our fanbase is typically unable to show a united front on a good night. You would think that Tech fans who can’t figure out how to wear “white and gold” might rejoice in the simplicity of “wear white”. Its just one option…you don’t have the think about it or make a tough choice…

The whole thing will look foolish… If anything…the fact that I need to write a blog entry like this is foolish…

All of the arguments are laughable. I’ve spent a good bit of time around UGA and FSU fans throughout my life and I’ll tell you…for all their faults and ego and overly inflated sense of their programs, they support their teams better than alot of Tech fans do.

This is football not an engineering lab or thesis paper! Get your wadded up panties straightened out and support your team! If you don’t then you deserve all the derision and trash talking and boasting your UGA neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers throw at you.

We need to put on a show for the recruits tomorrow night…both on the field and in the stands!

Go Jackets!

Nicely said.

My worry is not that we look foolish if we all wear white and lose, but rather how bad we all look if the announcers call the game a “white-out” and less than half the stadium is wearing white. We’d almost look as bad as if more than half the stadium was wearing red and black during a UGA home game. If all else fails, I’ll use a white bed sheet.

It is fair to point out that teams that have done an (insert school color here) out have not fared too well this season. UGA, FSU, and Marshall lost their games. Clemson also lost an “orange-out” game to some team I can’t seem to recall.

As far as the “whiteout” goes, it doesn’t bother me to have one but I think it’s a bit dumb to have a “whiteout” night. I don’t own ANY white tech appearral and I am NOT going to spend $50-$60 bucks I don’t have just to do it. If the student body wanted to do it then let THEM do it. Personally, I wished that Tech would go back to the navy blue jerseys for home games. They look SO MUCH better than all white ALL THE TIME!!! Mix it up a little bit. Or have the team wear the Navy jerseys one night and have acool promo for that. I guarantee Tech fans have more NAVY stuff than they have white. It kills me because everyone at Tech is so adimit about the team colors being ONLY old gold and white yet over 85% of the merchandise on the on-line store is NAVY BLUE!!!!!

Boggs,

I usually find you to be a complete and utter moron in your little fits you pitch here.

But you know what… for the first time, you’re actually saying it like it is, no urine-colored glasses.

I can respect passion (even misplaced passion).

And you’re right, your fan base does need a kick in the @$$.

Enough with the excuses. Support your team… or don’t.

It isn’t about you, it’s about the team.

When our team wanted us all to wear black, we all complied to support our team.

We didn’t complain. We didn’t b!tch and moan.

And you know something, for a fan base that you Bugs claim to make so much more money than and that we all live in trailers… not one of us b!tched about the price of buying a new $40.00 hoodie or black hat, or whatever, for the Auburn Blackout last year.

It’s kinda funny, reading all of y’all’s b!tching and moaning in that context.

Y’all claim to have so much more money than us and have better jobs and everything… so what’s $40.00 to y’all?

Do what Chris says. Support your damn team. The biggest hurdle y’all have to overcome in our rivalry isn’t on the field…

… it’s in the stands.

Bugs.

As a counterpoint to all these “[Team X] had a [color Y]-out and lost”, Virginia Tech has had a white out, an orange out, AND a maroon out this year, and won all of those games.

As a counterpoint to the “you’re/were just copying uga”… um, [color]-out games have existed for a long time now. Even my high school in Dallas, TX has a blue-out once a year. It’s not limited to football either - I distinctly remember the Miami Heat having a white out the year they won the NBA championship. It’s not like this is the first time that Tech has ever done a [color]-out, either, so quit yer b***’!

tl; dr version: If you don’t wear white to tomorrow’s game, kill yourself.

thank you Chris! we need to let these “whiners” know that they will be the ones looking very foolish tomorrow night when the “true” and “real” fans of GT football come out dressed in white.
the players and recruits are excited about it. what other reason do we need to put on something white and support our team? and for all those people saying that they don’t want to spend $50-$60 on a white hoodie… good! i wouldn’t want to spend that much money either. just go and buy a stankin $3 XXL white T-shirt at walmart and wear it over your jacket. it’s not rocket-science. and if you don’t even want to spend that, just put a white plastic garbage bag or a white bed sheet over your outfit. either way, just come out and support your team!

I personally was against the idea since so many other schools now do it. Clemson tried it this year against us…UGa had the debacle with Alabama…Penn State started the trend…etc. It’s like our music selection to hype up the student body that is also used around the nation. I am all for originality or even the clapper things to get more noise and give us a home field advantage. But I was resistant to the wearing of a specific color. That said…I will be wearing white t-shirt, white sweater, and a white hat at the game tonight. Why? Because my school has asked! How can I truly support the program if I do not support the initiatives created by the current student body???

By Bad Idea

November 20, 2008 9:03 AM | Link to this

The “White Out” at this time is a stupid idea - period. The assistant AD suggests it was the idea of the student body but it sure looks to me like it came from the athletic department who, conveniently, had the bookstore stocked with white apparel the same day they announced the promotion.

There are two upsides to the “White Out”: 1) IF the stadium is sold out with Tech fans it will look very cool on national TV. 2) It will raise revenue by selling additional merchandise in the bookstore.

The potential downsides are many. Here are just a few: 1) If the stadium is not sold out, the resulting visual effect will be embarrassing because it will only reinforce the fact that we are unable to sell out a nationally televised home game for a winning team. 2) Miami has a HUGE fan base in metro Atlanta and history has shown us that they will show up for the game. If 30% or more of our “white out” is wearing green the effort will look completely unsuccessful and, again, serve as an embarrassing visual reminder that we can’t support our own team by showing up. 3) As soon as the TV announcers mention the three UGA “blackouts” during the past year (and they will), we will look like we are simply trying to copy our in-state rival. 4) The temperature will drop below freezing during the game and several people who had intended to support the “white out” will instead opt for comfort and cover their white t-shirt with a warm jacket of some other color. This will result in the visual embarrassment listed above.

The important thing tonight (and for EVERY home game) is to SHOW UP! Wear any color you want but SHOW UP! Once we are selling out our stadium on a consistent basis, we can begin talking about fun promotions like a “white out” but until then we are putting the cart before the horse.

I am as big a Tech fan as anybody on this board. I went to school there and I faithfully support the athletic programs to the extent that I am able. Loyalty has nothing to do with this. A “white out” at this time is simply a stupid idea.

I am now donning my flame-proof apparel awaiting the many vicious responses. Bring it on.

Hey all you college football fans, Penn State did it before georgia. The problem with most of the GT fans is you’re all lazy. Try something new. Show the new recruits that we can stand together, and show them we are not fairweather fans, to support them when they come to play here. It’s not something you could wear only one time. Unless you put the article eof clothing inn the back of your closet after the game.

While you may have valid points on Miami fans, empty seats, etc- you’re not going to help anything by not wearing white. Why don’t you swallow your pride and take one for the team?? This blows my mind. I have never heard of fans complaining about something so simple. “I’m not going to spend $50 on a white shirt.” I bought a t-shirt (which you could buy for less than $50 and put in on over your coach!) and I’m not even going to the game. Up here, Notre Dame country, Charlie Weis asked fans to wear green to the next game. He asked that fans do this on Tuesday. I have not heard one person complain. I think it’s going to be a lot colder here on Saturday than it will be in Atlanta. Am I still going to wear my GT gear to tailgate at the ND game…yes, because I am a true fan!

Suck it up and do something for your team who has done so much for you this year. They have exceeded expectations. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like our fan base will. Do this for the team. When a team is truly supported, they can achieve far above their potential. Fans…do your job tonight!

Okay so they were handing out free white out shirts (8000 of them) to GT students who are attending the game. You should have seen how long the line was! The line went from the football stadium all the way to the library… which is about a quarter mile long. Those shirts will all be gone by 1:30 and every student that got one (I’d say oh… 8000 of them) will be wearing it. The GT students will wear white… and any of them that don’t aren’t true football fans (which we unfortunately have a few of in this highly academic school).

I agree that anyone who can’t follow thru on a simple request to wear white is not much of a fan. Just do it!!

My complaint centers around the uniforms that will be worn tonight. Part of the idea of a “whiteout” or “blackout” is for the players to be wearing a color or uniform combination that they rarely wear. In case anyone hasn’t noticed, the Jackets have ONLY worn white jerseys all year long, and have worn white on white (jerseys and pants) at every road game. What’s special about having a “whiteout”? Having a gold on gold night, or busting out a super secret special navy blue jersey/pants combination would actually get the fans pumped up.

I’m pretty blah about the whole thing. But as a true fan, I will comply and do my part. But mix it up a little please.

However, if that is what the kids want, just wear something white, even if it has to be an XXL T-shirt over your jacket. I still have my Maryland Vs. GT tech T-Shirt from that Thursday game back in 1995. I wish I still had my seat cushion that went out onto the field as well.

Actually…let us not forget that tech will be in all white for the first time in their football history. I don’t know whether a lot of you know this or not, but if you look at the pictures when they introduced their change of jerseys at the beginning of the year, they actually have an alternate “white” helmet to go along with their jerseys.

JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT!!!

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF WE WEAR WHITE OR NOT???? I THOUGHT US WINNING THE GAME, AND POSSIBLY GETTING A GOOD BOWL GAME WAS THE PURPOSE OF WINNING AGAINST MIAMI!!!!

Like I said before I’ll be wearing my blue jersey, and yelling for my team all the way!!!!! And, if you have a problem with me not wearing white, oh well deal with it!! THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS AT STEAK TONIGHT!

Sorry, it’s not the end of the world because I misspelled one word! I just think everyone is turning the whole white out into a bigger deal, then it needs to be!

I was wondering about Nesbitt as well…haven’t heard an update today…I hope it’s COLD…it will be tougher on the team from Miami than on the team from Atlanta.

I remember the last time the Trek team wore all white for a game. It was the Silly Con Valley Girl Bowl and Trek lost in the mud to Fresno State. There were at least 15,000 people in the stands, about 85 of which wore gold and white. What a laugh.

This just in… the SCLC has decided to boycott your “white out” because it doesn’t meet the minority participation requirements of the City of Atlanta. Jesse Jackson is on his way as we speak to form a picket line starting at the Varsity.

Tech fans-

This is Ken Sugiura with the AJC. I appreciate your passion for Tech football, and I hope that the Whiteout succeeds tonight.

I want to speak on behalf of Tony Yetman. I want to assure you that he is a diehard Tech fan like all of you. He attends games regularly.

I want to appeal to your better nature and ask you to stop the attacks and the ridicule. He told me that Tech fans have been calling his house and e-mailing him and calling him vile names.

I really hope you’ll lay off of Mr. Yetman. Just because he doesn’t want to wear white to the whiteout doesn’t make him a bad person or someone we should hold up as an object of ridicule.

He is a father of young children, a volunteer in the community and, we should remember, a Tech fan. We are all free to have and express our opinions, but let’s not use them to hurt or put down other people. That’s not what this forum is about.

If you want to come after me, please do so. I wrote the story. But let’s be civil towards each other.

Thanks.

hey Ken… to little too late.

now tony is destined to be a name linked to bad gt fans. his name may end up in the hive primer along side of… no NO 6, wally yapoo, tnassip the recruits and the story about fecal matter and a visit to a steak house chain etc. there is a thread over 7 pages long with over 130 posts using our new found ‘slang’ for a bad fan.

instead of chosing to slant your article in the same manner that chris boggs did…the worthy cause and school spirit angle… you chose to take the good fan poor fan angle.

many gt fans saw this as just another attempt by the ajc to ridicule the gt fan base as opposed to the uga fan base. wrong move!

maybe you should not have used a real name or you could have chosen to keep the names PRIVATE. its too late now. tony yetman is now infamous.

next time you may think twice about how an article is be percieved before you run off willy nilly. than again many of us think you knew exactly what you were doing…. your only mistake was naming real names.

if i was tony yetman i would be seeking legal counsel.

Hey, Chris

I noticed you like most delusional Techies have to always take a pot shot at UGA, no matter what the topic is. That is the sign of an inferiority complex and a loser’s mentality. I wouldn’t say finishing in the top 10 5 of last 6 years with 2 BCS Bowl wins and two SEC titles means having national title expectations are unrealistic. What is delusional, though, are the Tech fans who think their program is close to that of the UGA program right now despite never finishing in the top 25, not playing in any BCS Bowl Games, only playing in a New Year’s Day Bowl once, and winning no ACC titles, in that same time frame. A little dose of reality without hate will do you guys some good. Paul Johnson is going to do some great hings and you might catch up to that level in the future, but let’s keep things in perspective for now.

Hey, gtfan. That’s funny. You called someone on spelling yet you made a grammatical error yourself. What you meant to say was “it’s”, not “its”. “It’s” is a contraction. “Its” refers to possesion. Classic!!
