Mississippi State - Post Game Thoughts
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
How much can you really say about a 38-7 woodshed beating?
Actually, you can say quite a bit when your opponent and the recipient of the beating is an SEC team that had just gotten done battling well respected and Top 10 Auburn to a 3-2 “standstill” the week before. I’m still not sure Mississippi State knew what hit them…the game wasn’t as close as the 38-7 score implies…which is saying something.
The day set up perfectly. I was able to get down to campus in time to catch Yellow Jacket Alley and visit some friends over in the AMC lot. I then wandered back towards our spot on West Campus where I had a bacon wrapped filet and some hashbrowns with my name on them waiting on me. By 10:30am I was settled in at the tailgate with my plate piled high and our normal crowd of usual suspects gathering round to discuss the upcoming game.
The feeling going into the game was that we’d be competitive and pull out a defensive battle that might be decided on turnovers or special teams plays. Noone was talking about a big offensive breakout or blowout. We were just happy to be back home after two weeks on the road.
The crowd was slow to fill in as kickoff rolled around. (Noon kickoffs STINK!) But we had close to 50 thousand by the time the game started and the sky was crystal clear and there was a light breeze to keep things crisp. It was the sort of fall morning that keeps guys like me paying the seat license fees and buying season tickets.
The offense was clicking pretty well there on the first drive but then we lost Dan Voss at center and Josh Nesbitt at quarterback. I remember thinking to myself, “Great. We get to play a true frosh quarterback and a walkon center against this vaunted Mississippi State defense.” But then a few plays later we’re up 7-0 and Jaybo Shaw is looking like he was born to make option reads and pitches. And then we observe the strangest looking bad snap in the history of Georgia Tech football and we have a short field and Shaw makes a few more plays and we’re up 14-0. After that, the game was never in doubt again as Shaw continued to drive the Yellow Jacket offense with a proficiency that seemed misplaced in a true freshman.
The final score was 38-7 but the game wasn’t even that close. It could have easily been 60-0 if Paul Johnson had desired it. We played upwards of 70 players in this game…pretty much everyone who was dressed out and wasn’t off limits because of redshirts or injuries. We treated Mississippi State worse than we treated Jacksonville State earlier in the season, not something we expected to see happen against an SEC team.
There were many, many highs to discuss from this game but I’ll reduce the list down to the ones I consider the most important or worthy of discussion:
1) We played a ton of depth and got everyone some playing time. This bodes well for depth deeper into the season and does great things for morale. Our third and fourth string guys were out there running the defense and moving the ball. It was outstanding!
2) Greg Smith had a really good game and may have finally turned the corner on what has been a lackluster season for him so far. We needed this to happen.
3) Jaybo, Jaybo, Jaybo…’nuff said!
4) We won the turnover battle! This may be our most crucial stat in games against teams like Miami, FSU, or UGA. We cannot give away free points and put ourselves in a hole.
5) Michael Johnson finally had the breakout game we’d been waiting for. All the double teams on MJ have given Derrick Morgan a chance to really stand out. And now that teams have to also pay attention to Morgan, MJ will pull more one on one matches…which he will almost always win.
All of the game specifics aside, the biggest factor right now may be how Tech’s schedule sets up in the next few weeks. We get a week off to heal and rehab various injuries. This will give Jaybo more time taking practice snaps with the first team offense if it looks like Nesbitt will need sometime to rehab his hamstring. And we follow the off week with home games against Duke and Gardner Webb before we go on the road to face Clemson. Essentially, we have the opportunity to stay at home and get healthy before we go to Clemson…and we could be 5-1 and Top 25 ranked when we face the Tigers.
Regardless of what happens the next 3-4 weeks…know one thing…Paul Johnson is a heck of a coach and this “rebuilding” project may turn into “reloading” sooner rather than later. I’m going to enjoy the ride. Its a great time to be a Yellow Jacket!
Go Jackets!

Chris, GREAT BLOG!!!!
I was about like you in thinking this was going to be a low scoring afair. I was thinking a 14 -3 or something like that, of course GT on top. Boy was I wrong and glad for it. It’s funny because I actually posted in an earlier blog before the game that I would like us to win about 35 to 3…I thought I was having wishful thinking. I should have went with that. I guess that’s what I get for doubting PJ’s team.
Anyways, I was in the West stands, thanks to some free tickets courtesy of MOES in Atlantic Station, and I think on that 4 and 3 from the 25 when PJ decided to go for it, pretty much everyone around me was saying before the the play, “What is this man doing,, I wouldn’t do this”…you know, things like this. After that play, they were pretty shocked…as was I. It’s funny though, because on 4th down and 3 or shorter, I don’t see why GT cannot make those, I am comfortable with those situations. It’s a good feeling.
Dwyer and the secondary are playing very, very well together, did you notice on that 88 yard TD, that Dwyer was pointing his secondary to the blocks and slowing up to allow them do it???? WOW, he is great and I am proud of our secondary.
GREAT GAME, now run that table GT and take this ACC!!!! We deserve it!!!!! VT can’t keep getting lucky with these games!!!!

Chris, I am right with you. I was optomistic, but I don’t think anyone outside the Tech lockerroom (probably not them either) expected the outcome of Saturday’s game.
My wife & I took my son(2 yrs). He loved it! Strapping him in the van after the game he said, “Go Jackets! Fun.” I couldn’t agree with him more.
Here is to lots more “Fun On The Flats!” We’ll be back in Sec 223 all season.
Thanks Coach Johnson for making “Go Jackets Fun!” again.
Is it just me or are there far fewer ugaers talking trash on our blogs of late?
Maybe even they are taking note.

Nice Blog. I was also at the game with my 20 year-old daughter. She wanted to go since she had spent two years at MSU before transferring to nursing school at another university. I kept telling her on the trip over that we were going to score at will on the State defense, but I was just kidding, I thought?!?!
I love this offense. I believe it will attract even more fans (outside of the GT family) to our games. And I believe it will help us win ACC championships and beat GA in the very near future.
Great game Morgan, Michael, Jaybo, Jon, Bay-Bay, Luke, Greg and every other Jacket player. Great game GT coaching staff!!

The ratings question continues to come up. After Saturday’s game, it wouldn’t take much skill to make the point that this is one of the best 25 in the nation. However, I believe that the ratings will take care of themselves. If we are 6-1 coming out of the Clemson game, we’ll be a top 15 team. Anything less, we probably won’t be rated at all.
I am beginning to see the light regarding PJs offense. I was a big fan of the O’Leary-Friedgen offenses run by Hamilton. We kept teams guessing and we routinely put up 35+ points. The games were extremely entertaining. With a little more experience and seasoning, this offense has that same potential. MSU’s defense knew we were going to run most of the time, but they never knew where it was coming from and where it was going to. With more seasoning, when we suck them in, we can pop a pass over the top for a big one or two in virtually every game.

Jaybo’s 25 yard TD run on 4th and 3 says it all! It says: “We want to win!” It won’t always work out so well but I LOVE it that the Jackets are no longer playing scared. Who knows? We might be the Boise State of 2008!

Let’s see - 2 years ago GT was ranked in the top 20 and went to Clemson to play at Death Valley with ESPN Gameday there - game was at night and Tech was pumped - then the game started and, oh my - I believe the final score was 38 - 7, Clemson!
Sure hope the option works better than the former ofense - but, oh yeah, Tech has a new coach so there is no way they get beat there, especially after resting against Duke and Martha Stewart, er, I mean, Gardner Webb (are they Div II, III, or NAIA)?

This “boring” offense is pretty exciting. Dwyer along has more 20+ yard gains than all the opponents combined, and Nesbit equals them. This is an exciting offense and will even get better when a few more big play passes are worked into it. But why throw the ball all over the place when you can move the ball the way the Jackets is doing?

GT definitely ran all over our prized rushing defense. Wore us out, tired us down, and put the ball where it needed to be. However, your team is not a top 25 caliber team. As you mentioned in your article, look at the upcoming teams. Beating them does nothing for your standings in my book. For Pete’s sake, your playing a group of lawyers. I wish GT the most success possible. I am sorry you are fearing playing Clemson. Go watch the Alabama tape and take notes from the SEC on how to handle the Tigers. Good luck the rest of the season. Maybe your 60-0 score will come true against your over-powering upcoming opponents.

Jerome:
Thanks for the props. At least y’all know how to spell “dog”. And Bully’s better looking than Uga.
VoR has a point, but I wouldn’t call it “trouble”. Eliminate that one breakout run and all of MSU’s success against our backups in the second half and the rush yardage becomes more reasonable. CPJ addressed that—at length, probably more length than the players cared for—in the locker room at halftime.
You can see this team grow every game. Now, as long as we keep working on the turnovers (zero on Sat.) and special teams, that should continue.
I’m less worried about Auburn With A Lake than I was earlier in the season, but more worried about Miami.
We COULD still make it to Tampa if we beat the Candy Canes and VT loses to them…not sure how the tiebreakers would work at that point (assuming VT and Miami win out otherwise). Fortunately, we have the Tropical Depressions at home the weekend before COFH—lots of time to improve.
I’d love to have the rematch with Wake, and this time without Chan.

A few follow up thoughts…
Auburn 3 Miss State 2 GT 38 Miss State 7
After losing to LSU, Auburn dropped from #10 to #16, while GT did not break into the Top 25. How is that possible?? Either GT played a very beaten-up MSU team from their Auburn game, or GT is MUCH MUCH better than is recognized and/or Auburn is WAAAAAY over-rated.
GT may not break into Top 25 until we roll into Clemson and lay wood on those paper tigers.

I’m still not liking 11/29….
I still have us penciled in as an L in Athens (and one more L before then against the Candy Canes or Carowhina, or maybe Clempsun). Not an ugly L, but still an L.
Speaking of ugly, F$U and the Gators will be ugly…for the CrimiNoles. Butt-ugly. Don’t let the kids watch ugly.
Auburn With A Lake and SC will literally be a race to the bottom—who will choke first? Darth Visor or Tammy? Two sides of ugly.
Wake/Vandy will be a good game (remember, we used to call this game the ACC/SEC Toilet Bowl!) and is too early to call. I still need to see Vandy play somebody, though.

Comparing our score with MSU and Auburn’s score with MSU is difficult but I sure like the way we would match up with Auburn. IF we had won last week we would be top 25 now and would be in the driver’s seat in the Coastal. Now we need a lot of help and I was sure hoping Carolina was going to be some of that help. I also think the next couple of games will help us very little gain votes/support for a ranking unless we WIN REALLY BIG!! Also by the time we go to Clemmons they may have a couple of more losses which of course won’t help our cause for getting a respectable ranking. What we better be worrying about is that this Duke game is a trap game. For the next couple of weeks the guys are going to hearing how good they are and how many points we should score on Duke and GW and how we’ll be 5-1 going into Clemmons. That will all come crashing down if we don’t focus on Duke. I have no fear that Coach Johnson won’t be getting their attention for the next 2 weeks but you know 19 year old boys are still 19 year old boys. Believe it or not, Ted Roof brought in some pretty good talent that is/was still young when he got canned. Speaking of schedules, that formidable schedule of Ugag’s looks easier every day. Carolina and Tenn. are awful, ASU lost to UNLV and didn’t look very impressive Saturday night, Auburn played MSU to a stand still and then had LSU play them to a stand still. Oh but I know, it’s the SEC and every team is soooo strong that on any given Saturday … Right now it looks like Bama, Fla, and TECH are the best Ugag has left on the schedule. Ugag may win Saturday night but they better get ready to get their noses bloodied.

We played great in every phase of the game. Keep in mind, the 400+ yards given up by our defense is a little deceiving. We played the majority of the 2nd half with 2nd and 3rd stringers to give them some valuable game experience. MSU was able to move the ball on us in the 1st half, but just like the BC game, we made enough plays to keep them out of the endzone. When your up 21+ points in the second half, your defense is going to give the opposition a little more cushion in coverage, so they don’t give up the big play, which is another reason we gave more yardage than usual.
Like Jabster, I still have us penciled in with a loss to UGA and we could possibly lose to either the Canes or Clemson, but not UNC. They just lost Tyler Yates for at least six weeks with a broken ankle and they don’t have a capable back up. Before the Yates injury, I was more worried about playing UNC in Chapel Hill than Miami at home. I hope Nesbitt’s hamstring injury is not serious. Even though I have confidence in Jaybo, Nesbitt gives us the best chance to win.
Go Jackets!!!

I still have an L penciled in for UGA, Clemson, and UNC (3 road games).
UNC’s loss at QB is huge and could change that, although our game with them is not until mid-November. Yates could be back. Otherwise, they’ve got a lot of time to adjust to a new QB. I never count on a win in Chapel Hill.
I think we should win against Duke, G-W, and UVA. That leaves Miami and FSU, both home games, to swing the season, 8-4, 7-5, or 6-6. Good news is that FSU looked horrible against WF. Bad news is that Miami continues to improve and we don’t play them until 11/20.
We should do no worse than 7-5. 9-3 is not out of reach. Still pretty doggone good for PJ’s first campaign.
Thank God Gailey’s Gone!!!!

Yellar—
My pessimism about Carowhina was before I heard that Yates would be out for 6 weeks. Although I do hope for his sake and fair play that it’s a lot less than that.
UGA will still be stout—and as of right now still an L—but their sked IS looking a bit lite. Not to say that ours is tough—not with Puke, an FCS, Tammy’s Tigers in Happy Valley (easily the toughest of this group, not saying much), the brain-dead Cadavers, Half @$$ U (bwhahahaha), and a hurt Carowhina coming up.
Back to UGA. 2 wins over cupcakes. A win against a no-Cal Pac-10 team. A win against a SC team that will implode at some point. At least UGA got that out of the way early.
Bama and Florida (natch) will be tough. So will LSU. Those games will separate the men from the boys in the SEC (insert crowbar joke here). I’ll believe in either UGA or Santa Claus after those games, if UGA pulls them out.
The Allbarn Astro-Nerds? Those posers don’t even belong in the top 25. Vandy? Like UGA, haven’t played any real games yet. Kentucky? Suuuuure. Tennessee? May give UGA fits—they always do (kind of like UVA and Tech)—but hey, they certainly don’t look impressive so far. Note that a couple of these teams are in the top 25 (ahem…).
Then there’s the Jackets. And, just like UGA, we could easily fit in between these two disparate groups of SEC competition—and maybe go higher once more ball has been played.
If UGA has natchamp aspirations, they better hope we win out going into COFH, as they’re gonna need all the SoS they can get.

I agree with those who are concerned about UNC, they have some super individual players, they should have their qb back by then, and they always play the Jackets tough, regardless of the respective talent levels (remember who kept us from having the all win season). But we just need to stay as healty as possible and keep improving at least a little week by week. We will have more of a passing game by then if we need it.

Our signature win over an SEC jugernaut proves that we are NC contenders. With a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender in Jaybo Shaw at QB we should cruise through the ACC and win the conference. A double digit win over UGA will give us the high octane boost that we need going into the ACC title game, setting us up nicely for our game with USC in the Orange Bowl. We have the best talent in the country and nothing can stop us now.

Speaking of power rankings, Sagarin currently has Tech at #21. We only play one team the rest of the year that has a higher ranking, and that (of course) is UGA.
Clemson is a couple of points below Tech. With the home field advantage figured in, they should be about a 2-point favorite (if we played this weekend).
Using only those rankings, Tech should be favored in every other game this year.
Quite a turnaround compared to the pre-season expectations.
By TechCrybaby

I think Voice of Reason has a point. Tech’s defense allowed Mississippi State an awful lot of yardage, so, for the future, be careful. The Jackets rose up and stopped the Bulldogs when it meant “score or no score.”
But watch out for Duke - I mean it. Remember how lowly they were in 2003 when they surprised us, 41-17, up in Durham? They’re tougher now. If we beat them good, we ought to edge into the elite at No.25, at least.
When it comes to Clemson, that’s the big one. We whipped ‘em last year, in one of Gailey’s last gifts. But that was here on the Flats. The year before that, over in their place, we handed them our head on a platter, 31-7. I don’t think it will be that bad, this time, but Clemson will be favored.

I agree with Tech Cry baby. Duke and Clemson are dangerous. Duke can put the ball in the air and Clemson is dual threat and “death valley” is a tough place to play.
But, if Tech plays its game and hangs on to the ball and the defense puts real presure on the QB, we can win both of these games.
I remember the Clemson game a couple of years ago when they really ran wild through our defense. The two running backs they have are really good.
Ball control against both of these schools is important but we need to put a lot of points on the board.
You should never take another team for granted.

NYJacket you will not see a team all year with as much talent and speed across the board as UGA. They might have the fastest D in America this year and about 35 of them play every game. And now there is A.J. Green to go with everything else. You won’t beat UGA running the football all day. You better be able to throw it too. They are way too fast for your offense on D.

Agree 200% that you have to bring your game to every game. But don’t be frightened about Death Valley. We’ve won 7 of the last 11 against Clempsun, including 3 of 5 in Death Valley. So we’re over .500 there over the last 11 years (and with Chan to boot).
Duke can be a gotcha game, but only if we let it. Duke will really test our secondary like MSU tested our O-line.
Needless to say, you have to play all 60 minutes like you mean it.

Every game it seems there is a coaching move like this one I saw Sat…Peeples (I think) is running up the sideline and instead of turning it back inside he steps out of bounds. He starts to run back on the field and a coach grabs him and pulls him back, telling him “if you want to run out of bounds just stay over here”. Who else saw this?
Coach JOhnsons attitude that he expects perfection and 100% effort on every play, with a desire to get every yard possible on every run, obviously is instilled in all of the assistant coaches. And this is why there will be no let downs against inferior opponents, no more hearing the Coach of the Jackets saying “I just didn’t get them ready to play”.
We got ourselves a football coach fellas.
Indeed, Chris, its a great time to be a Yellow Jacket.

After watching the game on Saturday, I have found out where Chan Gailey’s 4th down plays went - he sent them to Sylvester Croom. The last time I saw plays like that run on 4th down, Chan was on the flats. You’ve got about 6 inches to go on 4th down, and you try a sweep???? Your offensive line can’t get you six inches??
Our thin defense, ER?? You obviously did not watch the game on Saturday, and saw how seamlessly the defensive line subs moved in and out of the game. This defense is bend, don’t break. And which of the UGA offensive juvenile delinquents will be able to block Charles Johnson?? Seems like Matthew “The Spooner” Stafford will be getting to know number 93 very well on 11/29!!

Charles Johnson played for UGA you moron. And by the way Bob, MICHAEL Johnson had very few breathers until way into the fourth quarter. When you can play 10 defensive lineman and hold somebody to 4 yds rushing like you know who, maybe you shouldn’t put your lack of knowledge on display. As for 11/29 I am sure you will enjoy watching Knowshon Moreno run by #93 when he goes after Stafford. Play the run he/you get burned with the pass. Everybody with any football knowledge knows your secondary won’t be able to play man to man on UGA’s recievers.

ER- do you have a life you pathetic loser? You have been on the gt blog now since 4:30am. 4:30 am Does your mommy know that you are spending this much time at the computer? I would worry about Bama first and foremost there big guy. 11/29 is a long way away, and the mutts have quite a few losses before Thanksgiving.
What a painfully obvious statement play the run, get burned by the pass. Really??? How long did it take you to figure that out? What a break through in football knowledge!! I can’t believe you would share the secret of the mutt offense like that!!!!

Actually, MISS STATE is a poor excuse for an SEC team, more like an ACC team.

pago flyer,
Are you talking about the same team that played your number 10 in the country SEC team to a 3 - 2 draw??
The same number 10 team that almost beat the SEC championship team a week later????
Hmmmm,, Sounds like the rantings of a TYPICAL SEC fan who is trying to justify an SEC team being CRUSHED by a lowly ACC opponent.
