Focus: Mississippi State!

Bulldogs Inbound?

This weekend we’ll get to watch the Yellow Jackets play the first of three different “Bulldog” teams on the schedule. And while the Gardner Webb and UGA teams are examples of two competitive extremes, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are a bit of an enigma.

While Sylvester Croom’s 2007 team went 8-5 (4-4 SEC) and won a bowl game over George O’Leary and UCF, the 2008 MSU team has stumbled out of the gate losing to a Taylor Bennett led Louisiana Tech team and Auburn while notching a lackluster win over Southeastern Louisiana.

The general consensus seems to be that Croom’s guys can play some excellent defense but I would submit that they haven’t truly been tested like they will be this coming Saturday. Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, and a woeful Auburn offense are nothing like Paul Johnson’s triple option that has functioned and improved while facing the stiff defenses of Boston College and Virginia Tech…on the road.

Josh Nesbitt has looked better each week and Demarius Thomas will be returning to the field. Thomas is a difference maker in his ability to both block and provide a legitimate passing threat to stretch the field. If we’d had him against Virginia Tech we’d have won that game, in my opinion.

The only way Tech loses this game is via turnovers or special teams snafus which give MSU easy points. The MSU offense will not be able to sustain drives against our defense.

I see this game playing out in the 27-10 range…in favor of the Jackets.

Luuuuuuuuke

The next time Lucas Cox rips off a long run or gets into the endzone we need to make some noise. Anyone else remember the “Luke Schenscher Has a Posse” shirts? If Lucas keeps it up, he may be the next adoptive student body favorite. He’s an old school, hard nosed player who brings it every play. I personally enjoy watching him quite a bit.

Yellow Jacket Alley & Visiting Recruits

It sounds like we could have somewhere between 50-80 prospective recruits at this game and many of them will be present in and around Yellow Jacket Alley. Not only is it imperative that our fans get down there to greet the team as they return home with a 2-1 record but we need to show these recruits how much we appreciate and support this team and coaching staff.

Get down to the stadium by 9:30am and show your colors and cheer on the white and gold. This is our real home opener against serious (SEC) competition. We need to take it seriously and step it up at YJA and in the stands.

Josh Nesbitt > Pat White

I’m sitting here watching Colorado and West Virginia and I’ve come to the conclusion that Josh Nesbitt is already as good or better than Pat White. He has comparable running ability and a bigger arm. All he needs is experience and seasoning. Its scary how good Nesbitt could be by the time he’s a junior or a senior and is surrounded by players that Coach Johnson has recruited for his system. The future is bright!

Go Jackets!

It’s hard to say he is better than Pat White right now. White has led his team to the Sugar and Fiesta Bowl, won conference titles and elevated the WVU program. White’s are isn’t good at all but he can take any run to the house. Also he rarely fumbles. Josh could eventually be better than him but not yet.

Sir I love Nesbit but lets be realistic here….he makes the right ready about 50-60% of the time and he puts the ball on the carpet…..Nesbit alone has 7 of Techs 11 fumbles…..when he learns to secure the ball and matures in this offense then and only then can he be compaired to Pat White

I like GT, but realize that you should not be so confident that GT is going to win 27-10. It is going to be a closer game than that … You under estimate Croom. Do you think he did nothing all week to his offense? I agree, MSU offense stinks, but there is the chance that it is not far off from being really good given a few small corrections. So I am laughing at how you think GT is going to win 27-10. If MSU scores 10 points that would be good, because GT isn’t going to score 27. Maybe 9 points. Any way I chose the MSU Dawgs to win 16-9.

By mtraininjax

Poor Ken, GT will win, if by the 3 point home rule, these teams are way different in talent and coaching. Tech has yet to score less than double digits in points this year, and Croom’s team will not be it either. I think 17-3 is more appropriate as MSU could get a FG due to a Jacket miscue. With all that Auburn gave MSU last week, I don’t see them being able to execute at all.

For the first time in years I’m optimistic about GT football. Nesbitt isn’t Pat White yet, but he’s getting there. As they say, “he’s a load.” I would not be surprised if he is an All-American as a senior. And don’t forget Jonathan Dwyer, Roddy Jones and Lucas Cox.

Chris Boggs-That might have been the most homer statement about a player I have read in a while.

To suggest that Nesbitt….although a super athlete that is good now….and will be very very good/great by the time he leaves Tech…..is better or even just as good as Pat White is FALSE and at this moment of time not EVEN CLOSE TO BEING A TRUE STATEMENT.

Ok I’ll give Nesbitt the benefit becasue PAT WHITE has an entire career of stats that Nesbitt jsut doesn’t have.

But Pat White led his team to a BCS BOWL BERTH AND WIN as a FRESHAMN all the while as a FRESHMAN running for 952 yds and passing for 952 with 15 total TD’s. The key there is FRESHAMN…SUGAR BOWL WIN.

Sophmore year. 1655 yds passing with 13TD’s/1,219 yds rushing with 18TD’s

Junior Year. 1724yds passing 14TD’S/1,335 yds rushing 14TD’s…WHILE LEADING HIS TEAM TO ANOTHER BCS FIESTA BOWL WIN.

Pat White has over 7,800yds of total offense…2 BCS BOWL WINS…and HESIMAN TROPHY consideration for the last 2 years, while leading his team to conference titles.

Nesbitt although a very good rough around the edges athlete that will get better and be very very good by the end of his career… Nesbitt has a passing percentage 0f 48%…Pat white’s passing percentage is 71%.. In my humble opinion Nesbitt at this moment in time DOES NOT COMPARE TO PAT WHITE.

D. Ellis - First of all, this is a Tech FAN blog…every statement should be biased towards Tech. Second, maybe you should go back and read what Chris wrote. He was just comparing what we have seen THIS year from Nesbitt to what Pat White did LAST night. I don’t think anyone can argue White’s stats and how valuable he is to his team, but he didn’t look that great yesterday.

gtrugby-Excuse my non bias Tech blog. My humble apologies as youguys get ready for a big game this weekend. Good Luck by the way on that.

Even this year in my opinion you stil lcan’t compare the 2. Passing percentage is not close. Turn over margin is not close. White has more yards passing and rushing…more TD’s.

And Your right he didn’t look good last night..FOR PAT WHITE STANDARDS…only 200yds total offense and 2 TD’s. Not good.

Nesbitt is very very good. He is going to be scary good when he is done. I look forward t ourgame as I do every year.

Sorry for the negative blog. I pull for Tech every week except in November.

Can’t back you up on the White / Nesbitt comparison. They’re only “comparable” as running QBs in that they both occasionally run keepers out of the option (White - read option, Nesbitt - 3O, etc.). Nesbitt is a strength, break tackles, move-the-pile runner and White is a breakaway, make-you-miss runner. The difference in speed between the 2 is pretty significant.

Others have posted the numbers so I won’t get into that. But I will mention that WVU has moved to a “pass happy” spread vs. the spread option under RichRod. The spread option fits White more appropriately - he has struggled to pick up the new offense (Wake’s old OC now calling plays for the first time). Last night against CU, they appeared to abandon the new O (already) for the spread/read option and White had a much better game. His head coach is responsible for the loss with horrific clock management.

We’ll be very lucky if the time comes when we can compare Nesbitt to White - but that time isn’t now.

Do you guys not realize how ignorant you make Tech fans sound when you compare a QB with 3 games as a starter with 7 of Tech’s 11 fumbles and an interception on his resume to a QB that has taken his team to BCS bowls and declare a coach with a 2-1 record in a mediocre conference a great coach? It’s the same ole stuff every year and then when the inevitable 7-5 comes around you bitc$, moan, and whine, like something out of the ordinary just happened. When Nesbitt, PJ, and this entire team actually does something great then scream it at the top of your lungs. Until then please act like you have some semblence of that characteristic called common sense.

Being new to the area and not a fan of either GT or UGA I have to admit that I find it humorous to listen to Tech fans declaring all forms of greatness and at the same time attempt to minimize the achievements of a superior program that has slapped them around practically forever. What is it since 1964. 12-32 against UGA? You proclaim Paul Johnson a great coach when at the D1 level he has beaten 5 teams with winning records in 6 years as a D1 coach. In the same breath a team that is 84-19 in seven years, has won 2 SEC titles and played for 3, has lost 4 road games total and only 2 non-conference games, and gone to 3 BCS bowls in that same seven year time span under Mark Richt is touted as not very good by Tech fans. Do you know how stupid that makes you guys sound. Maybe that is how Tech fans measure greatness. If so, using your logic UGA must be the greatest college football team of all time and Mark Richt must be the greatest coach to ever own a whistle. Knowing better however, the proclamations of greatness when it comes to Tech is nothing more than the collective braying of a herd of delusional jackas#es.

New to the ATL - I’ve never heard GT folks saying that UGA is a bad team. We just don’t like them much, because by and large they are Golliath where we are David…yet they rub it in your face like it’s an accomplishment to beat up on David.

IE…most of the blogging fans (MOST OF) aren’t classy to the clear underdog in the state (GT).

I admit UGA has built a great program. It’s what you call a football factory. The school is 3-4 times larger than GT, which means that much more resources. They SHOULD be better than GT and in reality they should almost never loose to us. History shows, we give them a pretty good run for the money considering we are the underdogs.

Even if it was worth bragging…it’s not classy to be a bragart. It is low class and comes across like a bully. No one who has graduated from High School likes a bully. I submit that not only is Josh Nesbitt not as good as Pat White, he’s not even as good as the Yellow Jacket 2nd string quarterback, Jaybo Shaw. I watched Jaybo thoughout his high school career. His decision-making and running skills are as good as Nesbitt’s, but Jaybo’s arm is stronger and considerably more accurate. So far, Josh hasn’t completed 50% of his passes in a single game.

Our offensive performance so far has been anemic. I’m looking forward to seeing Jaybo get his turn. I think he will quickly win over the hearts of Yellow Jacket fans.

September 20, 2008 4:50 PM | Link to this

I was at today’s game and Jaybo earned a lot of respect from me. He played a great game and made very good decisions with the option. But IM’84 you are SADLY mistaken on your statement that his arm is better and more accurate than Nesbitt’s. His passing was a clear weakness - no zip on the ball and he had a lot of trouble throwing it downfield.(no loft on his deep balls) He has a lot more development to do on his passing game. But give credit where credit’s due, he played a great game. So there is no need to embellish when it comes to his arm!!

By IM'84

September 21, 2008 8:17 AM | Link to this

I, too, was at Saturday’s game. I’ll admit that Jaybo missed a couple of deep passes, but I was glad to see that we actually attempted the passes. So far I love the option offense, and the MS State fans sitting next to me had nothing but compliments for our execution. However, to make the offense most effective, we at least must have the threat of throwing the ball. So far, Jaybo is 6 of 10 in his collegiate career, with one touchdown and no interceptions. That’s considerably better than our other QBs.

One other note … I liked the way Coach Johnson swapped QBs on our last drive. When the offense was trapped in long yardage situations under Dykes, they sent in Booker (the better passer) to get the first down. Once this was accomplished, they returned Dykes to the game to continue practicing the option. Very good coaching … at least in my opinion.

They are buying out and laying off the wrong people at the AJC. Back in the day we would have been treated to all sorts of views, and not the writer’s.

Wow! The Polls are impressed with them BEES. AP writers gave Tech 8 votes; Coaches poll gave them 7 votes. Guess the rose colored glasses might not extend much beyond the desperation of Grant Field. Now comes Duke and Gardner Webb. Huge victories might garner another 3-4 votes in each pole.

What fun it would be to have a ligit interstate rival!

Dawgman: Its “the” bees, not “them” bees. Duke and Gardner-Webb are your equivalent of Miss State and Ga Southern. Oui ?

Thanks, Dave in Tampa. It’s early in CPJ’s time with Tech, but it would be great for the game in Athens to match up two ranked teams. It’s great to be excited about the future for Tech football again…

Is there a doctor on this chain anywhere? Can someone refill m’s meds? Come on, m… CCG is old news. Post over at http://www.kansascity.com/sports/ if you need another fix.

Time to live in the present, and Dook is next. With Vanderbilt ranked in the top 25, the Rapture can’t be far behind. Just take ‘em one week at at time. Go Jackets!
