T-minus 14 days and counting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
That’s right…only two weeks until toe meets leather. Only two weeks until we get our first chance to tailgate and crack open an adult beverage with our old college buddies, tailgate partners, or random white and gold clad brethren who know the response to “What’s the Good Word?”
My parking passes arrived earlier this week and I have a UPS tracking number for my season ticket delivery. All of my tailgate gear is sorted and piled up in my garage for easy access. And early plans for fried “gamecock” are already being discussed by our resident tailgate chef/keg tapper.
The message boards are starting to heat up as people receive their ticket and parking pass details. It seems like more folks are being squeezed out of the east campus areas and are opting for the west campus lots and green space. The annual land grab before the first big home game will feature some new faces again this season. Our crew will have our area staked out and tents erected by sunrise on the morning of the Mississippi State game. Most of the people with RVs will have rolled into their spaces the night before.
I’m looking forward to this season. Much has changed on the Flats. By all accounts we have potentially one of the best all around coaching staffs we’ve ever had at Tech. The offense and defense will be completely different from what we’ve been accustomed to. Option pitches, slant routes, and screen passes from the offense? Bump-‘n’-run, man coverage, and defensive ends lined up wide to rush the QB on defense? All stuff that has been sorely lacking for a long time. Offensive adjustments at half time! This stuff sounds like crazy talk and fantasy fiction foisted on us by rival fans.
This will be an interesting season with some highs and some lows and I intend to write this blog as a fan. That shouldn’t be hard to do, since its a “fan blog” and I’m a “fan” rather than a “journalist” or a “writer”. We’re always going to have some mutts sniffing around here. I liken it to times when I take my dogs for a walk in our neighborhood. They like to wander into various yards and sniff around. Every now and then they’ll squat and mark territory. Sometimes, when they think I’m not paying attention, they try to leave a little “delivery” behind. That earns them a jerk on the leash and a swat on the nose.
Like my dogs, some of our visitors here will sniff around and generally play nice. Others, the ones I consider strays, just don’t know any better. They’ll try to make a mess and then roll around in it to create a spectacle. When that happens, just roll up your newspapers and remain patient until Nov. 29 … that’s when we’ll smack them on the nose and teach them to heel.
Go Jackets!

Anybody know what practice times are today ? Is it 3:00 or… 9:30 and 5:15 two a days still ? Watched several football previews on Sports South last night and all the teams that are projected to do well have veteran QBs. That makes me come to the reality that we are closer to winning 4 games than losing 4 games. Hope I am wrong. No way I am missing the JAX State game. GO JACKETS !!!

We are gonna be better than people think this year. I love that SI has UGAy #1 and Tech to finish last in the ACC, becuase SI has always been very wrong at predicting anything for college football. I say GT will be 8-4, Georgia will be 9-3. We are underrated and Georgia is overrated with a tough scedule.

I am a die hard dawg fan but my dad is a tech fan. I am one of the few people that root for tech except when they play the dawgs. I am taking my dad to the jacksonville state game for his birthday. I am looking forward to seeing how the new tech offense will run. I don’t think you can tell from the first game because it will be a mismatch on the line. Is it going to be run run run or are they going to throw in some deep passing. Can’t wait until football starts. The defense better get after Ryan Perilloux because if they give him too much time to pass it could make things interesting…Oh and. Go Dawgs!!!

We are going to be better than people think this year. This offense can put 20 on the board, and we will shock the doubters. I love that SI picked UGA #1 and Tech to finish last in the ACC, because SI is notorious for having the worst preseason picks every year.
If Tech can win one of the two opening road games at VT and BC….we will have a strong 8-4 season. UGAy has a tough schedule, I dont see them doing better than 9-3 with the big expectations on their little shoulders.

Good blog and finally season is near. Before we rewrite history, yes I agree this is a good staff but in the last 40 years or so since Dodd there have been several great assistants at Tech and staffs in whole. Bud Carson was one of the best DC’s in the NFL. Fast forward to Pepper Rodgers who had an excellent staff including Steve Spurrier as QB coach his last year and Bill Curry one year or so. Ross in recent memory had what many consider to be the best staff. He had O’leary has DC. He had Friedgen as OC. He had Pat Watson as OL, who had coached under Bill Dooley. Danny Smith. Jimmy Robinson?. Brian Baker. Etc..At the time it was considered the ACC’s best. Many head coaches have trained under Bobby Ross. Now that said, even as a Tech fan I think it’s a plus that Johnson trained under Erk Russell and this staff is well versed in the college game. The best offense Tech had was in 1999 ranked #1 in Country. They could run the option, qb draws, screen passes, short passes, long passes and about anything. They were hard to stop.

Guys I’m a recent Tech grad working in the Marketing section for ticket sales. My first job. Every single day I dread getting up and going to work because my boss is going to fire me before his boss fires him because you guys won’t buy tickets. He told me that I have until Friday COB to come up with an idea that will boost sales by 1000 season tickets before Friday week. How about this guys? Since I know you Tech fans are special needs cases I was thinking that maybe if we substituted Zima for the coke you get with your hotdog and play techno at the games that maybe that would be enough to get you guys to drop your D&D games for just 4 hours on Saturday afternoon and come watch the Jackets play football. Tech Fan,
Tickle Piles started in west coast sororities during the 60’s and spread eastward. They began with several young girls tickling each other to the point of hysteria. At Tech, Tickle piles arrived on campus during the early 70’s in several of our fraternities. They were innocent fun until sometime in the 90’s when many of our students began to take their clothes off while piling. This led to controversy because of the associated STD’s. Unfortunately most of our SA’s have become involved. Paul Johnson is trying to decide whether to embrace the Tickle Pile tradition or outlaw it for the Football team during the season.

Gotta set the pace early. I mean the fans. Let’s push the campus to the limit on Thursday by arriving early; earlier than ever before on a Thursday. Make a statement, break out the oldest Scotch, smoke ribs, grill fillets, and wear as much gold as possible.
Dedicated support breeds consistency. Players take their game to another level and recruits take notice. As Boggs and many others have stated, the coaching staff is solid. Bring it, win it, and they will come. GO JACKETS!!

Chris,
GT plays Miss St this season, too. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss them if I were you. They are returning a number of starters from an 8-win team that also got a Bowl win last season. A few other teams last year counted them as an automatic “W”, and they left with their tails dragging and a big “L” in the column. Auburn and Alabama immediately come to mind on that score. Coach Crooms has done wonders to revive that once dreadful team. Now, run along, and remember: Yeller Skeeters are Peter-Eaters!
1st Time Tailgater,
YES, the GT stadium is in the ghetto…YES, you will need at least a stab-proof/bullet-proof vest to make it thru the afternoon or night unscathed, and YES, you will need a small, easily-concealable weapon to defend yourself. All in accordance with Ga law regarding concealed weapons, of course!!
By george w

Only a fool at this point sees MSU as a W for Tech. They are not only a better football team, but have a turnover oriented defense. Sylvester Croom has wins over Florida, 2 over Alabama, Auburn, and Central Fla. Paul Johnson has 4 victories in 6 years over teams with a winning record in weak sister envirnment, and only one of those wins came against a team with more than 7 wins. Paul Johnson has proven absolutely nothing at this level, yet you’d think he was God’s gift to coaching. Optimism is fine. Temper it with some common sense. VT and MSU are turnover makers and GT’s offense right now is a potential turnover nightmare.
By GTgrad2004

We will be at an extreme disadvantage against deep defenses that can play 30&40 players a game. UGA played 40+ defenders every game last year and you couldn’t tell any dropoff. Our offensive line will be gassed in many 2nd and 4th quarters because of all the running. We don’t have alot of depth at that position either.
By D. Levens

There’s more to football than Xs and Os. If that were the case Steve Spurrier would win the SEC and a NC every year. Right now Tech is rebuilding to suit Paul Johnson’s system. The pieces aren’t in place yet and won’t be for another 2 to 3 years. And then is it going to work at this level? There is absolutely nothing to validate that it will at this point.

Stop with the gross stuff guys! Great article! I can’t wait til the whistle blows! This year will be so much fun even if it is rebuilding. With everything I have been reading, Tech will finish better than most think. No matter how we finish, we have a great future ahead with the staff we have and alot of fun in between. GO JACKETS & THWG
