Cheer! First peek at gold and white

Just got back from Fan Photo Day down on The Flats. Let me tell you … it was hot!

But you can’t let the weather or heat index warnings get in the way when you have a 4 year old who is bound and determined to go meet the cheerleaders. So my oldest daughter put on her GT cheerleader dress and white shoes and we piled into the car and headed down to campus.

Dan Radakovich has made significant improvements to the Fan Day logistics since he arrived here. Everything seemed orderly and controlled and this time there were tents (complete with easy to read signs) set up around the sidelines of the field.

The center of the field was reserved for a poster station and lots of room for kids to run and play and have fun. It was significantly better organized than the past few events and my only disappointment was that there weren’t more cheerleader posters … for my daughter, obviously!

After a few aborted attempts and shy retreats, I finally promised my daughter that she’d get a Frozen Orange from the Varsity if she posed with the cheerleaders and smiled so we could take a picture for mommy. That seemed to work like a charm … no surprise.

Beyond the random details of my daughter’s behavior, the biggest piece of news during this event was the unveiling of the new GT uniforms. I sort of like them and think they’ll look good stretched over pads. The pants are a dark gold now and closer to the color we used for the throwback jersies a few years ago. The tops have a little more graphics than we are used to and look kinda sporty while also featuring “Georgia Tech” across the chest in blue letters. I’m sure pictures will be all over the various GT message boards and the AJC by the time you read this blog. So there should be plenty of visual evidence.

Right now, I’m extremely curious to see if the helmets this season match the gold in the pants. I’m seriously doubtful that the helmets will be the same gold we’ve grown accustomed to in the past … it just wouldn’t match those pants. Who knows … we might even see white helmets … might be fun!

All in all its very obvious that Radakovich is working extremely hard to revamp and freshen up the GT program and its appearance.

You’ll see more blogs from me in the coming weeks and days, as we get closer to football season and I start getting more geeked up about tailgating and game day plans.

Go Jackets!

Thanx man! I am really excited about this football season and the changes D-Rad is making! I feel good knowing that it wasnt just a coaching change that GT went through. They are really trying to put the whole Chan Era behind us and I agree. Lets not have anything that reminds us of the past.. that includes the unis! lol

Thinking back…the “Georgia Tech” is either black lettering or dark navy blue. I’m sure someone can clarify. I was chasing a kid around and didn’t look in great detail.

Its not a “Chan thing” so much as a Radakovich vs Braine upgrade…honestly. Radakovich “gets it” and is taking steps to raise the level of the program while battling significant hurdles like the Atlanta Sports Council. Its more about leadership at the top than about just the football coach.

I have some fond memories form the years when Chan was coach. No reason to forget the Auburn, Miami, Clemson, VT, and other wins. If he’d beaten UGA at least once he’d still be our coach…yeah…but no reason to forget the big wins we did enjoy.

Drad and Johnson are so much better than Braine-dead and Gailey that it is not even close. The hiring of Chan Gailey and then allowing him to run our beloved program into the ground for 6 long tortured years is criminal. Anything to do with the Gailey ERROR should be burned. Thank God and Greyhound that the worst coach in the history of the NCAA is gone. Hallleeeeedamloooyah!!!

Although I’m a Dawg fan, gotta say that I did like the old white helmets with the gold GT on the side. Call them throwbacks, but it might just top-off the new uni’s ….. think it would look cool.

I’ve seen pictures of the new uniforms, and all I can say is YES! YES! YES!!! They look pretty effin’ fantastic! I was so sick of those wan, dull yellow things our guys had been wearing for the past year that my head hurt. All that color did was scream “WEAK!”. I’m so happy we’ve decided to actually wear our school color of Old Gold. It’s a sharp shade of gold, and when contrasted with the navy blue and the white, it looks great!

I’m reminded of the Tampa Bay Bucs moving from their Push-Up pastel orange uniforms to the sleek Pewter and Garnet that they have now.

just got back from the flats myself…VERY hot out there, but it WAS very well organized. the unis look good. i’m more of a traditionalist and would’ve like to have seen a way-throwback to a scheme like the 50’s back in our heyday…would’ve sent a great message. informed CPJ that my uncle went to the naval academy and i went to ma tech and we are both glad he’s here, to which he replied, “they’re both great places to be” :). it’ll take a year or two but once our frosh and sophs soak up the triple option, i look for us to contend for titles year in and year out.

The new uniforms are awful. But I guess the outdated uniforms will match the outdated offense we’re gonna to try to run. After 4 more seven win or less seasons everyone will wish we would have hired an innovative coach instead an old man with a worthless offense

I remember when GT used to wear the dark jerseys, then I guess it was superstition, I don’t remember, but they petitioned the NCAA to let them wear white jerseys at home. LSU does the same thing at home. I have always thought that it was stupid. Everytime GT was on the tube, it was either the white or yellow/gold jerseys. I grew up when Tech had the white helmets and JUST GOLD JERSEY. But, I am a Dawg fan, have always loved our uniforms, and looking forward to the annual butt whippin’ that we always lay on you!

Amen, Neal. So the nerds are all hyped up about their new uniforms - big deal. It doesn’t change the team one iota. The UGA - GT game should be a massacre this year as GT just doesn’t have the horses to compete. Too bad. Perhaps their new glorified coach will be able to build a team in 3 to 5 years as it would really be nice to get back to a genuine rivalry instead of a definite ‘W’ for the Bulldogs each year.

Butt ugly uniforms, the design looks too much like some of the crap that Miami and VTech wear, silly little swooshes or whatever you want to call them on the pants and the little dark line around the jersey tops. If you would change the blue to green the uniforms would be ugly enough to be worn by Oregon. Hopefully the team will play better than they will look.

These are now the single-most ugly uniforms in college football.

Now, y’all will be a laughing-stock on the field AND on the sideline.

Only the most BLIND Bug Homer (emphasis on blind) would say those hideous monstrosities look good.

Oregon and Oregon State can now breathe a sigh or relief, as Bug Central now sports UGLIER uniforms than their hideous uniforms.

I never thought there’d be uglier uniforms, but leave it up to the Bugs to find them.

Guess that’s what happens when you let structural engineers design football uniforms.

I know the uniforms are not that important, but those pants are ugly. I hope someone considers either white or navy pants to go with the white top.

Anyway, I am so excited about the Johnson era at GT. I think we will see an exciting team every week, and after this year, I really believe we will be competitive in every game we play. I do think this year will be tough because of the offense trying to learn so much so fast, but it is just a matter of time until Coach will have this offense running like a well-oiled machine.

Keep Woofing Dawg fans.. just have the guts to come around late early November. Florida is going to whip Georgia this year, and from what I am reading about Johnson, Tech might not be the automatic W you are predicting. The question is, will Georgia have enough kids on the sideline, or will they all be in jail.

The new uniforms are, in a word, HORRIBLE!!!!! To the Georgia Tech powers that be: Have you not noticed that the overwhelming majority of the top and traditional college football programs dont keep messing around and changing their uniforms??? Especially when they have a clean, solid look. Look at teams like Michigan,Penn St, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Ohio St, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida etc “Real” football programs dont go in for this trying to “modernize” their uniforms. Forget trying to “jazz” it up. Leave those swooshes and swirls and multi-patterned stuff to the Fresno States and Oregons of the world. I think GT has only confirmed with this new uniform that they are 2nd class citizens in the world of college football and now they will look the part.

The uniforms look fine. Hope they go with the white helmut.

The most important aspect of any uniform is can it be recognized from the most remote part of the stadium. Washed out numbers that can’t be read by the fans are usless and irratating. The navy numbers with an outline on the home uin’s in white is the right choice. Road uni;s with the same dramatic contrast is just as important. Don’t ever let a designer or non-athletic type be the final say on what the team will wear. Go to the top row of the stadium and look at both home and road. If you can read the numbers you have a respectable uni regardless of the color scheme.

Who is responsible for these so-called uniforms. We’ve gone from one of the best looking uniforms, white jersey with stripes on the sleeve and white stripe down the legs and white shoes. Uniforms are in a word, hideous. We took one of the best looking uniforms in college football and destroyed it. Why did we try to fix something that was not broken? But don’t post your distaste on a blog. Let the AA know! Email Dan Radakovich and politely let him know they messed up. Make it clear that tradition is important at Tech and that we should not just throwaway a design that has stood the test of time for one that will be out of style in a week.

okay… I admit it. I am a Dawg’s fan! And I have to admit… I as much as I enjoyed the energy that the black jersey’s caused last year vs. Auburn, I rather enjoy the traditional red with silver britches. This leads me to say that I thought Tech’s unis were just fine and this new design is a reaction to having a bad recent history.

You don’t have to look any further than just down the street to the dome to see the same kind of reactionary process that Blank went through to get the ‘Dirty Bird’ and 30+ years of bad football off his back. He could have dressed those punks in orange aprons… and they would have looked better.

While VTech, Oregon and Miami change those nasty unis every year… You have teams with pride and history like Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Texas, USC and yes UGA that don’t have to change anything from year to year to play the game and put butts in the seats.

With that said… those new jerseys are just as ugly as the upcoming season that Tech’s going to have.

GO DAWGS!

70% of you folks believe Tech has made a big mistake with the new uniform. They must look worse in person than in print? If that is the case this new tradition will only last one season. Sounds like somebody in the athletic dept. got sold a bill-of-goods. When in doubt go with the “Old Tradition”. Nobody wants to see “hip or new wave” let alone purchase it. I agree. I like the new uni’s. I hope we use the “throw back” white helmet. I love the white helmet and think it’ll really top off the new Ga. Tech football team.

That being said, not all of the Chan Gailey era should be forgotten. We had some great wins over Auburn, VT, Clemson, Miami, etc. that I don’t want to forget. The key thing to forget is the utter disaster Gailey created against the mutts. For Tech, if we’re not playing for a BCS title or ACC title, then we better beat UGA. You gotta beat your rival, and Chan couldn’t. You can blame it on Reggie, but Chan is the one that marched Reggie out there.

New uni’s, new coaches, new offense, new attitude - things are looking up!

Remember how excited y’all got because of the black jerseys last year? “Oooh, we won at home against Auburn with them … they must be lucky. Let’s wear them against Hawaii.” Quit being two-faced.

It’s pretty sad that in order to fire things up, you had to rush the field during the Florida game … break out new uni’s against Auburn … jump on Vandy’s “V”.

Second, maybe your school should find some way, sad or otherwise, to fire things up on the way to an 11-2 record, a BCS bowl appearance (and win), and being included in national discussion. Some would say that ‘Dawg’ is another way of firing things up (maybe ‘Jackette’ would work for you). Anyway, “WOOF”, and be safe.
