How does a father pass love of Jackets to kids?

Happy Father’s Day to all my fellow Yellow Jackets out there. Hopefully, your Father’s Day went (or is going) well.

I spent the morning watching the Disney Channel with my two girls (4 and 1) and then shifted over to “Enchanted” on DVD while the younger one took her morning nap.

It was good daddy-daughter time and it got me to thinking about and looking forward to tailgates coming up this fall. We take the girls to all the home-game tailgates even if they don’t attend the games. And I try to get my dad tickets to a game each season so he can come up and hang out and get some tailgating in as well.

The only wrinkle with my dad is the fact that he’s a big UGA fan. So in years where we play in Athens I don’t mind getting him a ticket but in years where we play in Atlanta, I typically prefer to take him to another game. I’m not sure what the plan will be this year. We’ll have some interesting home games against Mississippi State, Miami, and FSU … not to mention UVA for homecoming. I’m thinking that Thursday night Miami game might be a really fun one. Maybe take the afternoon off from work and hit the Varsity and some campus sites before an exciting night game against the Canes.

He’s a mutt … but he likes college football in general, just like I do, and I remember a few trips to Athens and Atlanta in the early ’80s when I was old enough to attend games with him. We made it to Athens to see Herschel once. I remember eating at the Varsity and walking across the bridge over I-75 in either ‘83 or ‘84. We sat right behind the GT student section in ‘97 for the infamous phantom interference game. And we sat together in the freezing cold in 2004 and watched Reggie throw the ball away at the end. (We both thought it was third down…must have been that endzone down marker eh?) There have been other UGA games as well as a few FSU games … the 2000 game against the ‘Noles being the most memorable and frustrating for me.

My daughters are being raised on a steady diet of Georgia Tech and Florida State. So far, Tech has the edge because of proximity and Buzz being a very kid friendly mascot. My oldest knows both fight songs and does the Chop for my wife. The youngest will start her indoctrination this year. I’d like to get both of them down to women’s hoops and volleyball games since my oldest recently asked her mother if girls played sports or if it was just for boys.

I figure we’ll start with tailgating this fall and ramp up from there. Our crew added about four new babies last summer so our tailgate nickname (Family Parking) will definitely be applicable.

So … fellow dads and bloggers … what do you remember about your dad or grandfather growing up? What team did he cheer for? Do you still pull for the same team? What games and trips do you remember? And how are you raising your kids? What traditions are you handing down?

Bill Curry and the Bama & Notre Dame games were some of the greatest games for Dad & I. Ga Tech Football Camp w/ Pepper Rogers I got to play one-on-one with Eddie Lee Ivory. Mom, Dad & I went to Va. Tech to watch us beat them in their own house, the trip with mom & dad to Auburn to beat them 2 yrs. in a row. Dad & I in South Bend last year was great and the fans were so nice. Dad started dating mom in 73 and takeing us to the games and I have been a Tech fan every since. L. Samford, Rhino, Besilue, EO Wheeler kiking it throught the uprights on kickoffs, and Capt. Crazy leading the cheerleaders were great times after Little League games at Chastain Park. We really are p** that the ARMY was dropped. Dad is a 61 grad ROTC butterbar and I am 89 No. Ga. College grad and we wanted to goto West Point BAD BAD BAD.

I grew up an NC State fan through and through. However, growing up in Georgia ment the only time we could see them was when they played the Jackets. I remember vividly teh Old Alexander Memorial Coliseum and going down on the court after a game to meet SYdney Lowe and Derrick Whitenburg who two years later would win the most spectacular National Championship ever played. I also met Jim Valvano. We woudl always go tot eh Varsity first then the basketball game. We went to several football games as well where I watched Bo Jacksons 99 yard run into the endzone. I always loved goign to sports with my Dad and now having “gotten out of Tech” I am a true Tech fan and my kids are too. Our play room is filled with memorabelia and they both now how to scream “Go Jackets.” We have season tickets and take the kids to about 2 or 3 games. Htey love it and so do we. The older they get the more fun it seems to be. I hope me and my kids can have the same bond my Dad and I have around sports. Numrous ACC tournaments, one where my Dad gave the principal a note telling him we were going on a educational field trip so I could go to the first round games at the Omni. We cheered for NCState and the Jackets.

My best Tech memory with my dad was in 1990 when I was 11. Christmas morning, my brothers and I were enjoying opening gifts. After all the gifts had been opened, my dad handed me an envelope. Inside were Citrus Bowl tickets! I couldn’t believe it, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so much joy in my life. We traveled down to Orlando and watched Tech whoop the crap out of Nebraska. We went down onto the field into the mayham, and I was able to get my picture taken with Coleman Rudolph. This was absolutey one of the best memories I’ve ever had with my Dad. I knew this was something very special. Man, that was awesome.

Where do I start??

Interestingly enough, Mom and Dad both grew up in different parts of Atlanta. Both came from huge families, and both were raised with all of the children to be Tech Fans. To this day, our tailgates reach 40 plus at times.

My first memory was from the 70’s, maybe a Peach Bowl year. Dad bought me a Gold Tech Cowboy hat with a T on the front. The real memories came in the 80’s. Bill Curry, John Dewberry, Bobby Cremins, Robert Levette, Mark Price, etc. They excited me to no end, and that was despite what was going on in Athens with Herchel and Nique.

Smoking the ribs before the 10-9 win over Clemson, the kick in Athens to end the drought in ‘99 was awesome, but I think beating Miami at Miami when the Canes were still top 5 was the greatest.

Hey, we rarely miss a game, home or away. Mom does all the driving, I do all the work, and Dad (God bless him) picks up the bill.

I know a ton of Georgia fans and graduates. They have a passion, no doubt, but I’ve never seen or met a Dawg fan(s) with the passion we have for Tech. If God could just give us all another 30 years to be together, I would be even more thankful. GO JACKETS, TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!!!!!

My uncle was a former Yellow Jacket player so I have been going to games with my dad since I was a toddler. When I became an undergrad at Tech my father was very proud although he never approved of Tickle Piles. I don’t think many of the older guys approved of Tickle Piles but thank goodness they have become a part of Tech’s heritage.

All you really have to do to pass on your love of the Jackets to your kids is show them how ignorant and obnoxious the UGAY fans are at all times. Then let him choose not to EVER want to be so illinformed and classless. It shouldn’t be too hard to do achieve that one.

The first ever college-level game I saw was the annual TECH-UGa freshman game in the early ’50s.

Little Jimmy Thompson and the White and Gold won my heart over. Also, we had a father-like coach who was fan friendly and the Mutts had Wally Butts - looked like a 1930s gangsta character (smile).

My family is from Houston so my dad was all about the Oilers (until the well dried up and they went to Tennessee). Even then my dad was still a Warren Moon fan. He hated college football and told me not to get into the tailgating culture when we moved down here in 1996. He was afraid that I’d be influenced by all my new friends whose families were all about their SEC football (which my dad always said was full of football schools for the under-educated). So my first real football experience of my own was when I came to Tech and saw my first home game. I’m hooked. Even to the heartache!

My first memories were listening to a Tech- Duke game in the early 50’s with Bill Teas playing, where Al Cirraldo getting so excited he kept calling them the Bluke Due Devils. My mom died at 95 two years ago and to my knowledge never missed listening to or watching a Tech game. I know this is about fathers day but my dad couldn’t stand to listen. I do have two kids that graduated from Tech like their Dad.

I’m a Dawg fan and so are my kids (ages 4 and 6), but I’ve got to admit that Buzz is a very kid-friendly mascot. When we go to Tech to watch games, my kids always ask if we can find Buzz to give him a high five. It really warms my heart to see Buzz give my kids a laugh by the crazy things he (I guess it’s a he) does even though they’re dressed from head to toe in red and black. Keep up the good work Buzz!

My dad and I are both GT graduates and since the late 90’s have always tried to get to at least a couple games a year, him from Western NC and me in Columbia. We made a trip together with the Western NC GT club to the Clemson game where Kerry Watkins caught “the pass.” We still talk about that trip today as the best game we ever saw together in person. Favorite tech memories? Hmmmmm…hmmmmmm…nope, nothing really comes to mind. Oh, wait, seven in a row (14 in a row if you’re counting games in which ELIGIBLE players competed), owning the bees on the diamond, 51-7, winning the SEC on tech’s home court, Reggie Ball’s glorious tenure, having the Master’s Chairman among our alumni, Joe Hamilton’s criminology 101, 32 consecutive years in the Governor’s mansion. But…those aren’t really fond techie memories, no? Stick to fantasy card games boys. I’m sure yall are hell at those.

Favorite GT memories:

  1. Tech 7 Alabama 6 in ‘62. Bama was led by Namath and unbeaten forever. My algebra teacher (Bama grad) had to eat a lt of crow that next Monday.

  2. Tech 38 Texas A&M 3 in 1966. Actually attended this one. A&M’s Gene Stallings had mocked GT and Dodd following A&M’s upset win in ‘65. Only time I ever saw Dodd run up the score as Larry Good hit John Sias with a long TD pass on the last play of the game. My dad and I were ecstatic.

  3. Kim King and Lenny Snow putting on magic shows in ‘65 and ‘66.

  4. GT basketball’s three wins over UNC in 1984-85. My jerk of a boss was a rabid UNC fan. Made it extra sweet.

  5. Lethal Weapon Three. I did play-by-plays for my son who was in his mom’s belly at the time.

  6. George Godsey’s run vs. the Dawgs in 2000. I’ve never screamed so loud.

My Dad went to HS with Leon Hardeman and he is still a Tech man although he never attended. He took me and my brother to many Tech games in the early-mid 70’s. Randy Rhino was my hero. My brother married a Seminole fan and he has drifted off. It is just me and Dad now although my 2 daughters (oldest attended Tech) are big fans as is my wife (converted from UT). Over the years I have been through the victories and heart break but have never strayed from the roots my Dad gave me. Thanks, Dad. Go Jackets !!! PS -my daughters understand that I will never pay a tuition bill to UGA or have a son in law from UGA. I know that it is being small but seems reasonable to me. :-) PSS - I will always be indebted to Joe Hamilton no matter what mistakes he might make.

I have hundreds of memories when it comes to my Dad and Tech. Some of my favorites would have to be Tech’s Hamilton led come from behind win in 98 against UVA. The Gator Bowl win over ND also in 98. Another great one was a win over Tennessee on a VERY cold Saturday night in the Curry era, don’t remember the year, 83’ or 84’ maybe, I was about 10. Getting closer to the top of the list would be, one of the best ever, the 20-16 win over UGA when Gary Lee ran one back 95 yds for a TD. There’s many more memories, but what I remember the most of all are the times that I watched Furman, The Citadel, Wake and everbody else beat the crap out of us around 78’-82. And on top of that, we would get there 3 hours before the gates were open and read the program. Good Times.

My favorite memory? This is a hard one. The 51-7 beat-down UGA put on you? Or was it the Reggie Ball “mis-count”? Was it the time Ball shoved a student-assistant to the ground and got tossed? Maybe it was in 06, when your “best team” since the late 90s lost to our worst team since the Mark Richt era began? I don’t know which one is my favorite…..I’ll take any memory where UGA beat the sh1t out of GT. That’s what I love the most about Thanksgiving weekend over the last 7 seasons….the annual UGA win over the bugs. My youngest son doesnt even remember the last time GT won in the series, so it’s easy for him to make a decision on who to root for when it comes to this rivalry. I didn’t have to teach him anything. Like most folks, he just loves a winner, so it was easy for hm to love UGA.

ROb….I concur in reverse. I would NEVER pay GT tuition, nor would I accept a GT in-law. I also would not have begun dating the woman I married had she been a GT, UF, UT, or FSU fan. I also find it funny that the author of this story threw FSU in there as his other team….even though they are also garbage, they have been more consistent than Tech over the last 15 years or so. The reason for many divorces likely has to do with spouses rooting for different schools. Since I have been married for 20 years to the same woman, I guess I made the right decision by finding another UGA fan. She would have developed bi-polar disorder by now if she had been a Tech fan.

Growing up in a Tech loving family, the way I taught my daughters(3) and son(1), to honor the Jackets, was to hold their noses and not breathe when we passed that abomination on I-75, as we went to the Varsity or other points South! We bleed Red and Black, and have no use for the N.A.T.S.. You people show your dislike for all of us , and believe me , the feeling is mutual. Very emberassing thing to follow a team like Georgia where most of the fans not only didn’t go there, most never went to college at all. Check Youtube - my redneck wedding which aired on cable featured some Deliverence looking characters in south Georgia, all real of course, with their Bulldog flad hung on their trailer in the swamp, a bulldog cap on and one granny with a Marlboro hung off her lip and I swear to God a bulldog t-shirt on while she whacked a goat up reminding us of a scene they left out of Waterboy. It’s not just Techsters, my friend, it is everybody I come in contact with, from S. Carolina to Florida to Tennessee to Alabama, one thing they all share is a hatred of Georgia. Why? Because they are jealous? Hardly. It’s because over the years these numbskulls have p** off just about everybody they can by being not obnoxious, LSU folks can almost match them on that, but being the whining, crybabies they are. Every call, every play, every game is always no credit due, it’s all due to the refs. I would not tolerate a father in law who followed these bums, so that is where we are different right there. Put his a* in a library and tell him this is what he missed by not going to college.

All 3 of my GT Boys learned potty training with the help of DipSh!t, the little ceramic UGAy Bulldog I placed in the bottom of the toilet for them to p!ss on…But it really got fun once they started saying things like, “Daddy, I think I need to go poop now…What about that yellow Bulldog that we pee on? Do we take it out now?”

Of course I always answered, “No son…It’s perfectly natural for a GT Man’s Son to go poopy on that ugly Bulldog that’s made its home in our toilet…And now it’s time for that yellow Bulldog to turn brown. One day you’ll understand and you’ll even have a Dipsh!t of your own in the toilet and you can teach your sons how it’s proper to pee and poop on all things UGA!”

The moral of our family story is: It’s nearly impossible for a GT Father to pass his love of the Jackets to his sons without first building a firm foundation in what THWG! really means…

I grew up in the North end zone, it seems. Dad got season tickets every year and on Saturdays we’d park down near where the Pic Ric used to be and walk up. We’d usually get a program right where that walkway is in front of the library as you walk up to what is now Bobby Dodd Way. I remember watching Johnny Gresham, Bill Battle, Lenny Snow, and lots of others since. Somewhere in the house, there are probably a couple of old programs from those days with the cartoon fronts. Anyway, after living away from Atlanta for several years, after we returned, my wife and I adopted children later in our lives, and I took my boys to their first game. We walked the way my dad and I used to walk, and it brought up emotions and memories when I walked them that way for the first time with them. Later that day in the kids zone, some asked me about starting them young. I said sure,we’re workin on the 3rd generation! I can hardly wait until toe meets leather (it’s a hiiiigh, looooong kick) in September so we can build more memories together. Go, Yellow Jackets, Go! Go! Go!

Hey everybody. I just wanted to apologize for putting that link to my blog up. My blog is such garbage that no one will read it, unless I post links to it all over the internet. And then only 30 people have looked at my blog. Im such a delusional, bandwagon ugay fan that even I feel sorry for myself. I am really a 33 yr old virgin, living in my parent’s basement, where I write my garbage blog on a 4th tier sports website. When I use to have a job, I made a wopping $37,000 a year. Thats higher than the average coming out of ugay, and I was very happy about it. Just so you know, its $50,000 coming out of GT…so although we have a full bandwagon, its full of meth-trailers and white trash. I was fired from my job for masturbating at work, and so now I live in my parent’s basement, where I can blog and beat-off all day long. Don’t feel too bad for me though. I have my delusions of grandeur, and believe that my blog is funny, important, and actually read by thousands of mutt fans.
