Gotta love the start of spring practice

Its a big day for GT football fans. First official spring practice of the year. Gotta love it!

Fourth Quarters Tech fans have been following things for a few weeks now, on the internet, since we caught wind of the new “Four Quarters” drills that Mike Knobler touched on in his most recent article. The first warning came from some Navy fans who popped in to warn us about what was coming and to expect some fallout or attrition.

It sounds like the “Fourth Quarters” drills were open to both football players and any middie that was crazy enough to come work out with the football squad up in Annapolis. I admit, the details relayed were fairly brutal. I can’t imagine any circumstance under which I would voluntarily throw myself under that conditioning bus. No thanks! Its alot worse than Mike’s article portrays.

“Matt Drills”? Yeah…whatever.

I expect to see a marked increase in toughness and endurance on this year’s team.

Bits & Pieces By all accounts, the coaches are impressed with the teams’ efforts leading up to the first real practice. And I haven’t heard of any players who have washed out because of the conditioning challenges.

Booker and Nesbitt will have an interesting competition for the starting job, in my opinion. Booker has shown he can throw the ball and lead the team in adverse conditions (see last season’s bowl fiasco) while Nesbitt is the obvious athletic specimen. The job may come down to decision making and who brings the best total package to the offensive backfield. Who can make the reads and make the calls with the game on the line?

How will the offensive line adapt to a new blocking scheme that is predicated on blocking down field and hitting assignments in the defensive secondary in many cases rather than pro-style pass protection assignments or zone blocking for Tashard Choice?

Which receivers and kick returners are going to fight for playing time in the A-back (think slotback) position? The A-back is going to block, run, and catch out of this offense. Expect to see more people get playing time and rotate into the game…especially if they can block.

Who will backup Jonathan Dwyer in the B-back (think power back / fullback) position? Maybe Richard Watson gets some time as a true freshman? With Roddy Jones and Jamal Evans moving to the A-back slots, we’ll need a bruiser to spell Dwyer in games.

I’m looking forward to practice reports and details from fellow GT fans. I may actually get down to a few practices this week myself.

Season Tickets My crew is sorting out our ticket choices this week since our wives have dropped out of the block to look after all the new babies. Tailgates will still be a family affair but the games will be for the “guys” this time around. I’ll miss having my daughter there for good luck head rubs and signing the fight song.

How many of our GT readers here have picked up additional (or better) seats due to the staff changes and new excitement surrounding the programs going into 2008?

If so, sound off for your section. I know LW 102 will be loud and proud again this season.

Go Jackets!

THWG!

Good blog. In my opinion, Tech will need at least two if not 3 Qb’s to be game ready since they will be doing a lot. I was’nt expecting what I saw today being the second day but was impressed with what took place on offense (did’nt get to look at defense yet too much). The passing is going to shock some people and fans. It was interesting watching the big TE play slot and running with the ball. And for Nesbett who is use to the shotgun he looked pretty comfortable taking snap under center and doing the option thing. His passing was excellent and so were the two other Qb’s Booker and Manley. This coaching staff is really good from what I can tell hands on teaching, conditioning, and focused and disciplined.

I attended practice yesterday and was very impressed with Nesbitt. He seems to be developing as quite a leader. If Paul continues to reward the team by allowing participation in alumni Tickle Piles I’ll be a happy fan.

Expect the whole stadium to be “loud and proud again.” And WHY? Because we no longer have to suffer by watching the worst coach in the history of the NCAA dismantle our program the last 6 years. CHAN GAILEY is gone. We NOW have a QUALITY coach. The ERROR of GAILEY is OVER. Hallleeeeedamloooyah!! Tech football is back.

You can hire Vince Lombardi & they will still be tech. A bunch of NERDS playing before a high school crowd that could care less about football.

Wait till fall and see how many folks are in the seats.

I always appreciate the well reasoned, quality comments form Dawg fans on the Tech blog. It reinforces every image I have of Georgia fans. Thanks, robdawg!

UGA fans are scared and so they become belligerent. They know their whipping boy, Chan Gailey is gone and so they will actually have to work to beat GT from now on.

At UGAg bigger always equals better. That’s why they brag about “filling their stadium.”

It’s a part of their lives - look at the 4x4s with the big muddy tires, all you can eat buffets — anything BIG is good.

It’s an ignorant mindset - it fits well for Ugag.

I plan to be at practice tomorrow. It feels good to see so much excitement from the players, the coaching staff and the alumni.

I know many friends who are expecting Nesbitt to be the starter because of the incredible runs from last year. But I think Booker may surprise some people. He demonstrated great leadership when he had the opportunity on the field. It is nice to have options, and I’m sure we’ll need them both in 2008.

LW108 will be rocking!

Nerve————>Struck. Good going robdawg. Awww…did some Techies get their itty bitty feelings hurt? You can cut the bitterness on this blog with a knife. Too hilarious.

Did Boggs seriously take a dig at Georgia’s mat drills? Does he realize that Dave Van Halanger brought the mat drills from Florida State? Does he realize that Florida State owns Georgia Tech like a 3 legged dog? Does he realize Georgia has won 7 in a row against your total joke of a football team with the assistance of the mat drills? Does he realize that Mark Richt has NEVER lost a football game to Georgia Tech in the entire history of the world?

For some supposedly smart people you Tech fans sure aren’t heavy on facts are you? Oh well. Keep crying.

Simply pathetic.

Hey Yellow Jacket fans, all UGA folks are not guys like Robdawg, who probably never set foot on campus to attend class, and we are not “trailer Trash” as one of you called us.Some of us are decent fans, so do not classify all of us because of the words of some who spew forth that kind of garbage. Why do some of us look at your blogs?, because we are interested fans and like to see what goes on at other places. I do notice some Tech comments on our blogs as well.I personally wish Tech well, except, of course, when we play on another!Have a great evening to all!!

Boggs…. Don’t think you should be talking about Georgia’s “Mat Drills”. They seem to be working just fine at conditioning our men to kick Tech’s a** every year for the past 7 years

It’s funny. UGA spends more time on our blogs than their own. They have to do this because we are the only team they have beat lately with consistency. This is the only way they can feel good about a team that has great talent but never gets invited to the big show. They seem to forget the 7 in a row we put on them a few years back.

I don’t think I have ever gone to Duke’s football blog, GSU, NC, NC State, Auburn (cause we handled them well the last 2 times), and a host of other teams to brag. I wonder how many times UGA has gone on the Florida Gator blogs to cheer for their FIRST win in 16 years against them. Where did all the UGA people go now? All I hear are crickets in the background….They shout up real quick…keep blasting Tech all you want…every time you type one word against us shows how bad you envy us as a school, not necessarily a football team. Thanks for the praise..keep it up.

Why is there not a new or better blog for the GT basketball team??
Anyways GT basketball will be back next year! Hewitt is a good coach!

I love how Tech fans complain about UGA fans posting on their blog yet GT fans do the exact same thing. Clowns.

Any GT fans that think Gailey was the worst coach in history need only to go back to the 90s in Athens. Have some perspective people!!

Georgiagirl, remember about that “our” stuff. You never attended a class at UGAg. All you do is serve beer at the local smoky redneck biker bar to see who can bark the loudest.

You are trash, quit posting on our blog.

Ramble ON!: You are such a tool. I love punks like you that talk trash from behind a keyboard. Everyone knows you would wet your pants like the little girl you are if you were ever confronted by a dawg fan. Now, back to your cubicle. I want those TPS reports pronto. Loser.

There sure is a lot of big talk from a team that has lost seven in a row. Nice crack about the mat drills, nerd. Especially after the finishes late in the game the last three years or so.

Let’s put things in perspective…under Chan Gailey, Tech was a SUCK-CESS. Under Paul Johnson, Tech will be a REAL SUCCESS. Big difference. Thank God and Greyhound that Gailey is gone forever.
