Leaky roof, leaky season

I’m not quite sure what to say … a losing record and a leaky roof that causes a “rain out” against a Virginia team that’s actually worse than we are and which provides a good chance at a win to pull to 5-6 in the ACC?

A Tech buddy of mine e-mailed me yesterday and said he was going to bring a ladder and a caulk gun to the next home game. So hopefully someone will be prepared to deal with a leaky roof …

Football recruiting

We’ve gotten three extremely early commitments from future offensive and defensive linemen. John Drew is a 6-3, 295 defensive tackle from Columbus, Emanuel Dieke is a 6-7, 205 defensive end from College Park (think Michael Johnson clone once he puts on weight?), and the previous mentioned JC Lanier is a 6-3, 340 tackle/guard from Twin City, Ga. We’re off to a good start with some very big and very athletic kids who have attended camps on campus at Tech. It looks like this new coaching staff is falling right in line with Giff Smith and our retained guys to really make a splash on the recruiting front. Tech has always been able to recruit skills positions! … but we’ve historically struggled to get the “big uglies” to man the offensive and defensive line. We’ve taken undersized guys like Joe Anoai and grown them into quick/mobile tackles. Plugging Drew and Lanier into the defensive line together would be an instant 600+ pounds of defensive tackle. I like the sound of that.

License plates?

So now the Georgia House of Representatives has voted to stop making out-of-state university mascot tags if neighboring states don’t return the favor? This is ridiculous … especially following so closely on their ill advised and transparent gambit to push for a football playoff system, by passing a resolution that lobbies the NCAA to throw away a BCS system that functioned correctly but didn’t place UGA in the title game.

Make no mistake about this latest resolution…this is all about the Mutts vs the Gators. The UGA disciplies in the state House could care less about Auburn tags, Clemson tags, Florida State tags, or anything else. All they care about is the fact that a smallish number of Florida fans are able to get Gator tags. And to prevent that from happening they are willing to make fans of ALL out of state colleges give up their license plates. That’s right … if you are a fan of ANY school outside of the state boundaries, you may lose your tag if your school’s home state doesn’t allow UGA tags be created and registered there. And alumni clubs trying to get approval and support for new tags will suffer as well.

It’s ridiculous, infantile, and a waste of tax payer money and legislative time. And that’s not even considering the fact that the Georgia House is willing to THROW AWAY extra registration revenue from these specialty tags. They’d rather not see Florida Gator tags than pocket the money from Florida alums.

So now they are wasting tax payer money in an effort to reduce incoming license revenue. A double whammy of sorts.

I tell ya folks … we sho ‘nuff got us some smart politikin’ down hayuh ‘n Georgia … yup …

Go Jackets!

Chris,

I agree with you on the basketball problems.

I agree with you on the recuiting aspects.

And I especially agree with you as it relates to the Muttland Legislature.

As I learned years ago, prioirities will get you everywhere.

Chris: so your saying just because it wasnt the Jackets that got screwed by the BCS this year its a good system??

You sound about as dumb as Terrance Moore if you think anything but playoffs are acceptable. The BCS has made college football a JOKE of a sport for YEARS!! You seriously think if Tech had won the ACC last year and only lost one game, they wouldn’t of gotten screwed over 2?? JUST like V Tech did?
And UGA, and about 2 or 3 other teams that has JUST as much claim to the title game as Ohio State or LSU did!

Next year GT hoops will be back…got Dickey returning, and a good starting core. The only question will be will we be as deep.

B Ball team will not be back until we get a coach who will recruit ACC quality white and black players and know how to coach. Our most productive player is a small white kid who was a walk on. Where are the Mark Prices, Matt Harprings, Matt Geigers and the Barry brothers the last 8 years or so. They are still around just look at Duke, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Big Ten schools, etc.

The original decision to stamp tags for out of state schools is the same mind set that decided to design the our military,s combat helmet that looks like a German army helmet from WWII. If you can get by the fact that both are very emotional, one that giiving haven the most hated rivalries in the south the other the making our army look like the most hated army of all time, to someone it sounded like a good idea.

Basketball team will be fine. Mo Miller is coming into form and seems to be a player that will be here for 3 or 4 years. Dickey will be back and Aminu is becoming a more dominant as he is developing faster than previous PF like Smith or Peacock. So we’ll be fine. If you fire Hewitt, then you’ll be stuck w/ mediocre recruits. At least the man can compete w/ the elite for blue chippers. Hewitt needs to shake up his staff a bit to help shore up player development. Remember, his staff is fairly young w/ the departurs of his top 2 in the past couple of years. But Tech hoops will be just fine.

They are competing very well on the road and trust me when I say that the UCONN game was a game that shouldn’t have been scheduled in the middle of a grueling ACC schedule. Miami beat Maryland and Duke in the past week, so our home loss to them doesn’t seem so bad. We are right on the verge. Next year will be just fine.

Love all the hatin you tech geeks talk here about anything relating to the winning team in our state. You know, the team that has beaten tech SEVEN in a row in football, beat them 3 of 4 in basketball, and 7 of 10 in baseball. (we won’t talk about all the other sports we dominate tech in) Just keep hatin, because it lets me know it eats you up to a Georgia emblem. Go Dawgs and THWGT!!

Hey Steve….I’d rather be a nerd than a retard! Enjoy you’re recent success in sports. It’s all you’ve got. I’ve got three Ugay grads laying pinestraw at my house tomorrow. I’m sure they enjoyed the football season too. I’ll tip them an extra $20 for you.

Keep posting on our blogs. Who is eating who up??…. THWG

GeeTech -

Aminu has regressed more this year than any player from last year. He has played soft and very very inconsistent. I am actually feeling pretty good about Peacock; he has shown he has a good inside and outside game. He just needs to get a trifle stronger and he is not far away from being probably the best scorer on this team.

This year ha been a complete bust, obviously. However I am excited to see Mo Miller really progress; it will be nice to actually have a solid PG 4 years at Tech. I am feeling good about Peacock returning. I think the key is Aminu. He needs to work his tail off this summer, hopefully next year he will exhibit what he has shown he is capable of last year. Dickey - who knows. Good size, but will he be ready?

Eh, probably another sub-.500 year next year. ugh. Fire Paul Hewitt.

Are you actually proud of the job the Ga Legislature is doing? They’ve had a terrible approach to the water crisis (even though uGA really does have a few professors that have excellent ideas how to handle it) They are letting the lottery continue to spend huge amounts on internal “bonuses” instead of sending that money to the schools where it is desperately needed. Economic growth is slow or negative in most areas of the state. The border thing with Tenn. is a joke and now these tags…

how much is enough? I guess as long as the sports team is winning, then no uGa fan, grad can do wrong…

please think about it all again.

Missing tags are because UGA athletes and ex athletes grads and wanna be’s at the big house could not spell G-A-T-O-R or T-I-G-E-R. They did however know how many points a 3 point FG in basketball was worth. Given the recent move to black jerseys the score was not so high on what color are our home jerseys. PS we know where the pipe gets laid in the big house. What a stupid line of comment on a sports blog!!!!

A rained out B-Ball game for a leaky roof is beneath third rate. We appear to have curred the apathy in football perhaps the time is right to cure business as usual in B-Ball.

I take it ozman your confusion over a sports blog is because you missed both the questions on how many points is a 3 point shot worth and what color are dawgs home jerseys but hey blame the second one on Richt right.

Thanks for proving all the dawg cliches true in one short ignorant email, especially the cliche, it one thing to be silent and thought a fool and another to open your mouth and prove it.

GT66: Good points. Where are the Mark Prices, Geigers, Harprings ? These guys became elite because they stayed four years. These one-year NBA “scout team” players should be told no. I’d prefer to see a mediocre player who wants a degree than a one-year “student of the game”. Example: The Hawks drafted Marvin Lewis from UNC three years ago after his freshmen year. Does he even play ?

Sorry GT66, Hewitt is only recruiting some guys named Iman Shumpert (committed), Antiquan Beckham, Jarvis Jones, and Quasim Pugh. He clearly has not valued ‘diversity’ over the years. Expect more of the same going forward.

Hewitt’s teams have no apparent organization, fundamentals, or plays – just a hope that our athletes can better the other team’s athletes, which we did pretty well one year. I guess we do have a play that is run quite a bit: aimlessly pass the ball around the outside to act like you are patient and ‘running the offense’, then once the play clock has run down, someone go one-on-one or chuck it from behind the arc with a defender’s hand in your face. Thanks, but I’ll pass on watching this brand of basketball – except when it’s the USA ‘Dream Team’ trying it and getting schooled by a bunch of so-called ‘less athletic’ international players that know how to play the game of basketball.

Hey braveswin, Seems that your post is nothing more than what you are demanding be censored. Let’s see how many petty names or labels you have used: ‘13 to 15 yrs old’, ‘social infants’, and ‘bulls%#$’. Maybe you should consider offering points or counterpoints related to the article or comments that you disagree with rather than derogatory labels, or pleas to the AJC to pull material that makes you feel embarassed. I believe GT Basketball is headed in the right direction. Hewitt is a good coach and with some help on the bench we could really become an elite team again! Here is something i got off of a DUKE fan blog about the Nations Top recruit… Atlanta’s Derrick Favors:

“When I asked Favors of his ascension to the top he said, “It’s just hard work and wanting to win.” When asked what schools were on his short list, he said everybody.

He will confer with his parents and coaches, meaning both his AAU and high school coach. “If I had a dream school, it’s probably (Georgia) Tech,” said Favors.

Favors grew up in Atlanta and many feel it will be hard to get him north of that destination. When talking of Hewitt, Favors said, “He cool.”

I then asked the rising big man about other ACC schools like Duke or UNC and he said, “They’ve already come in … they’ve been in touch.”

When asked who he talked to from UNC, he couldn’t remember. I can’t pronounce the name of the guy from Duke. He was referring to Wojo.’

Now of course Tech and Hewitt being their is up in the air and Georgia doesn’t offer the hype he might desire. So what better time to make a move, or in this case stay in touch and see what he’s thinking”

See this is why its important for us as fans to stand behind the program we all love so much. GT hoops is headed in the right direction people, and im telling everyone…with a junior starting pt guard in Miller, a sophmore Shumpert, junior Lawal, and D Favors as center….this team will be at the top of the ACC in 09!!! You heard it here first….
