Jackets show their stripes

How do you follow a stinker of a performance against your in-state rival with a gem of an effort against #1 UNC and a gut check ACC victory against Virginia Tech?

Don’t get me wrong, we GT fans are used to ups and downs from watching the football team the last several seasons. We’re just more accustomed to having a big win followed by a head-scratching loss.

This was almost the opposite, which bodes well for the team since it signifies that coach Hewitt has not lost the players. They’re still playing hard. The game against UNC and VT were a glimpse of what this GT team is capable of.

The Hokies have been a thorn in our side for a few seasons now. We needed to get an ACC win and get on the right track. We jumped up early and led bigtime at the half before letting the Hokies tie things up midway through the second period.

Its a testament to the fortitude of this team that they didn’t crumble when their opponent came back and essentially reset the score on them. Instead of sulking and losing, they were able to bear down and recover, winning solidly behind a career effort by Matt Causey.

Football recruiting

When I saw TJ Barnes had committed, I had to wonder if Paul Johnson had ever had a player that big on either of his Georgia Southern or Navy teams. Well … certainly not Navy since they have size restrictions for sailors and etc. TJ is 6-7 and 320 pounds and will play defensive tackle. He’s only 17 right now, which means he may not be done growing! I would imagine that he’ll get to campus and will redshirt this coming season while he matures and gets into shape. He’ll make a mountain of a defensive tackle at about 6-7 and about 310 pounds of muscle by his R-FR season. This kid is huge!

When Marcus Wright shifted his commitment from Tulsa to Georgia Tech a lot of people scratched their heads and asked, “Tulsa? We’re competing with them now?”

But then we saw his resume and accomplishments and felt much, much better. Marcus was the Texas State 5-A Offensive Player of the Year. He played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He amassed 3374 rushing yards as a senior to go along with 45 touchdowns … which ranked historically as the 7th best single season of rushing in Texas state history. Those numbers put him in very select company and are largely a result of his world class speed. He was clocked at 4.36 as a sophomore during a Nike combine. This kid is a serious speedster and a real threat to hit homeruns in Paul Johnson’s offense. We’re talking CJ Spiller / Noel Devine speed here folks. Serious speed …

It seems he committed very early to Tulsa and was overlooked by alot of programs because of his size. (He’s 5-7, 170 lbs) A few BCS level schools tried to get in touch with him but his parents pretty much shut them all out until Tech came calling. The combination of Johnson’s triple option offense and family connections back in Georgia apparently got us in the door with Marcus … and now he’s ours.

These two latests recruits look to be impact players at some point in the near future. You can’t coach defensive tackle size and blazing home-run speed … you have to recruit it.

John, way to be a great Tech fan. Go root for the dawgs if you are so down on our team. Yes, it’s only one ACC win, but at least the team is starting to show some ability. They were clearly the better team yesterday, and they fought toe to toe with the Tar Heels last Wednesday. Boggs, thanks for the insights on the recruiting. Speed in the backfield and skill positions and bulk up front. Sounds like a good combination.

Chris. Nice post.

It appears that Coach Johnson and his staff are finding some traction in the recruiting rotisserie.

I would think the continuity of retaining Coach Smith as Recruiting Coordinator has helped.

Of course at this time of season, because recruiting “watch” has become such a big hoopla, there are infinite angles of analysis on what this or that player means to the program. No mistake, getting excellent talent is a must, but what they do once they get in completes the saga.

Encouraging is the documented history of Coach Johnson maximizing the abilities of his talent at Navy and GSU.

We shall see…

On the hoops front…Great effort by the team this week in both games. If Matt Causey doesn’t get ACC player of the Week…I’m not sure who does? Anyone?

We are in a hole still. It will be a hard fight. What remains to be seen from this squad…as with Hewitt’s most recent 3 editions…Can they win ON THE ROAD, IN THE CONFERENCE. If they can get at least 2 wins, hopefully 3…dare I ask for 4 wins on the road, we might manage to eek into the Big Dance…assuming we don’t lay any eggs at home. We’ll see.

When you start 7-9, 0-3, whatever the circumstances…you’ve stacked the deck against yourself.

What could be the great story of the winter is WOMENS HOOPS. Did we win today? Win or lose…this team looks headed definitely for the NCAAs and seems smart, tough and talented. Way to go Lady Jackets!

I live in the DC area and just got back from watching the Lady Jackets play #4-ranked Maryland. I had not been to any women’s game in over 25 years, but it was a great game and in my opinion though they did not win, Tech played fantastic.

They seemed to run out of fouls (had four players foul out) at the end. Tech shot 12 free throws and Maryland shot 44.

If you have not had the chance to see them play, please do so soon.

Props to Coach Joseph for putting together a fantastic team and the the players for making it happen.

Johnson hasn’t coached the first game and the media is already hyper-focused on the recruits he did and didn’t get. Give the man some time. This isn’t a processor or some sort of chip that will automatically solve the problem. This is a man w/ a plan and a vision that will take a few years to be fully implemented.

And the basketball team….they have the talent and I definately think they have improved from game to game since the Miami game. Remember, they were up 14 AT Miami before the refs stepped in and started issuing technical and intentional fouls to kill the momentum. Then we played UNC to a one point game. So this team is improving.

Spider said, “I think the whole team could get drunk and still beat Tech on or off the field.” Looks like we may find out as some the Dawgs are apparently getting a headstart on your proposal with one arrested last night for DUI and one arrested in a seperate incident for underage possession of alcohol. I love the opening line of the AJC story on the arrests: “The first clear signal the offseason has begun for Georgia football has arrived: Two Bulldogs football players were arrested and jailed early Sunday morning.”

Everyone who obsesses over the “star” ratings of recruits needs to back off and take a deep breath. As for the “Tulsa” recruit, Marcus Wright, here are the facts: squats 530 lbs., is the Texas Class 5A Offensive player of the year with world class speed. Also, go pick the January 21, 2008 Sports Illustrated magazine and turn to page-28. Marcus is on the top of the page, “Faces in the Crowd.” Paul Johnson is cherry picking the athletes he desires to execute his offense at this level. Take away his first year mark of 2 and 10 at the naval academy (lost 20 in a row before he arrived), and his head coaching mark is 105 and 29. This offense has never had the caliber of player he is now going to have available to execute this sophisticated scheme with on the division 1 level. This is going to be real fun to watch. The man knows exactly what he is doing, and who he is bringing into the program as recruits.

By addicted

January 21, 2008 4:35 AM | Link to this

@Tech Man

However, there is a HUGE difference between last year and the coming year. Everything has to do with the coaching change…

1) Chan Gailey ran a very standard pro offense, and so he needed high star players to run it. Coach PJ runs a slightly unconventional style of offense, which however, a lot of Georgia HS QB’s are used to. While they may not look as good as conventional QBs (thus meriting lower stars) they will fit in very well with his system. In other words, the quantities that these stars measure (albeit inaccurately) may not align with the quantities CPJ’s offense values, as much as they would with FCCG’s.

2) More importantly, Chan Gailey did not display the ability of ‘coaching up’ his players. This might have been changing in the last year (at least on special teams) however, there was not much evidence for this. On the other hand, if there is one thing that has been consistent with any of CPJ’s earlier stints, it has been his ability to make players play far beyond their capabilities.

3) CPJ is also looking for a lot of ‘diamond in the rough’ type of players (or so Boggs’ excellent article on Wright pick indicates) which may put us in good stead. Basically, he seems to be going for players who would appreciate Tech even if they did not play football here, for the education it gives them, and the bright future it sets them up for nonetheless. If at the same time they are still good players, that is the ideal kind of recruit we should be wanting.

Great job Coach Johnson. Keep up the good Job and sign some more great kids. Love the Lady Basketball team. Coach Joseph needs a raise and more support. Maybe she could coach the men’s team. In a competitive environment, to remain the same is to regress. Coach Hewett has had 8 years to improve this team and it has remain the same while Braine went along with it. Its time Rads gets a Coach that will (win) make fans proud again. FIRE HEWETT

Good grief, CPJ has barely unpacked his office and we’re giving him a bunch of crap about recruiting. GMAFB.

There’s an odd shot we’ll have a losing record this year, depending on how quickly the team gels under CPJ. Sometimes you have to step back to step forward. Thank goodness we’re doing this while the ACC is down.

Then again, we could have a Mark Richt-type rookie year…except CPJ is no rookie.

More likely we’ll finish 2nd in the ACC Coastal behind a VT team that wins by default. I’m sorry—Clempsun still isn’t all that, Half @$$ U has jumped the shark, and Groh will be back on the hot seat, proving 2007 to be a fluke.

And Spider—we’ll be as loud and as proud as we want to be, even if we go 0-fer next year.

I give UGA a bit of a pass on the drinking issues. They live in a college town where the cops have nothing better to do than crack down on alcohol violations. Tech is in the middle of a major city where the police are so busy with real crime that they have less time to go looking for DUIs and other alcohol related violations. A certian percentage of college students are going to drink and you have a much easier time getting into trouble for it in Athens than Atlanta.

spider, yes, we realize that we lost 7 in a row to UGA, that is why a coaching change was made. You can live in the past if it makes you feel better, but I prefer to live in the here and now. I am sure that recruits don’t like or hate us more than any other school. Your taunting is meaningless.

Re. Recruting. For all of you who get caught up in star counting…don’t ! Coach Johnson is going after players who fit his offensive scheme and believe me, he knows what skill set fits each position in this offense. The great thing is there are already some good fits already in place at the skill positions. Be patient though. Tech’s success early under CPJ is going to be determined by how fast the linemen can learn the blocking schemes and how soon the skill players can get the timing fine tuned. Especially at the QB position.

I would be more worried about the defense. Tenuta recruited specially for that “blitz every down” style. He had a smallish, quicker D that relied on speed. I’m a little worried that this new cat from USM might take a while to adjust. As for BB, I don’t know what planet LOng Beach and Donald are living on, but teams with losing records don’t get invited to tournaments.

To be honest with you, I, for one, expect more from The Institute. Both Ross and O’leary had their moments but both had losing records against UGA. Our whole mindset needs to change at Tech if we are going to ascend to the level of play that I expect. When we are among the Top 15 programs in the country I’ll be satisfied. William:

We finished a Top 15 program (in either the AP or the coaches’ poll, or both) in 1998, 1999, and 2000, under O’Leary. Look it up.

Yes, O’Leary was only 3-4 against UGA (3-5 if you count the 1994 post-B### L#### cleanup game), but Donnan was 2-3 against Tech during this same time period.

My points to Jim were that a) people DIDN’T think that Chan was all that from day one and b) we CAN do well, and HAVE done very well in the last 20—heck, the last TEN—years. Always room for improvement but not the “why don’t you guys drop down to DIII” hater crap the Bulldog Nation’s Fairweather Region keeps giving us.

You’d be satisfied with a top 15 team? I won’t be “satisfied” until CPJ is holding a Waterford crystal football (like the one we got in 1990), umpteen years in a row. Yes, that means that I always won’t be satisfied.

As far as a mindset change, that’s why Chan’s office is now in KC and not in the Edge building.

Saying things like “it’s going to take a miracle for any Coach to get us where some of our fans want us to be”, “we’ve got a long way to go”, “honestly we have an inflated opinion of where we rank in the football hierarchy” makes you sound like either a hater or a poser—although there’s a grain of truth in each one of those statements for each team in the NCAA, not just Tech.

Do I think we’re going to get a crystal football next year? Doubtful. And that also goes for the rest of DI-A. Even UGA has less than a 50% chance of getting it next year and they will require their share of “miracles” or, as I like to call it, luck, hard work, and positive attitudes (not in that order).

Nothing wrong with wanting more, but there’s no need to talk things down (unless that was your objective).

Seems like the kid from Tulsa will be a good pick up for you guys…..4.36 or 4.35 either way is flat out BURNING..plus having the 7th best single season in Texas history means a ton..alot of good high school players and football in the state of Texas…seems like he will be a good addition with Dwyer in the back field.

jabster,

Please don’t cherry pick! As I said in my post, we have had “moments” but we are not a consistent Top 15 program. To say we are is ridiculous.

Despite rumors to the contrary we should be among the best in College Football. We have more going for us than just about any program in the country yet all we do is make excuses.

As for Chan, I quess I was not talking to the same people as you but I distinctly remember many saying that Chan would take us to the promised land.

The point is that we have a tremendous challenge in Georgia considering our competition and we need to accept reality before we can begin to change.

I would imagine that PJ is smart enough to put in a package for him with speed like that..tunnel screens…reverses…mis direction….pass plays out of the back field…etc…much like they did for Devine….that is if he passes high school…AHHAHAHA Had to say it.

What about me Mr. Fake ramble on.I called you worse names than Headknocker did. And by the way - Tech did not win the NC in 1990. The AP voted Colorado champions and thats who counts. The UPI didnt know a football team from a turd - in your case its the same thing. All the Nation except for Tech knowes that the Champion was Colorado. Look it up.

This is pretty damn funny. I went home after my last post. Ramble on p** off a few.

I think he might be the same moron who accused me of posting under different alias’ in the past. I only post as “headknocker” because what are you gonna do? Kick my a*? The Ramble on’s of the world don’t really bother me. I am a dawg fan whether they win or lose. Some of my buddies I grew up with are the same about Teck, and I can appreciate that. It’s the fair weather fans that really p** me off. If Paul Johnson has a good couple years you will start seeing Teck flags and stickers. When he leaves to go to his next school all those flags and stickers come down. Meanwhile in Athens, we just keep rolling. You can say what you want about National Championships. The only thing I care about, and the only thing I have ever cared about is the conference championship. That is all the team can control. By the way, when was the last one of those Teck won? Talk about living in the past. At UGA we’re living in the present and it is fricken awsome!

Just to set the record straight:

1) UPI’s poll was, and is today, THE Coaches’ Poll. The one you can find in any decent sports page or site. Then and now. The same one the BCS uses today. after the AP took their football and went home.

2) We split an ACC championship with Half @$$ U in 1998.

I am so impressed with all the UGA folks who can read the future. Could you please teach me? On second thought, forget it. If I always knew what was going to happen, I may get bored and stop caring.

I live in San Antonio; my daughter is a Tech Grad and she graduated from SA Reagan; my son is a sophomore there. We’ve been watching Marcus Wright put up incredible numbers for three years. Reagan is a fairly new school, playing in one of the toughter 5A districts in Texas. Before Wright, Reagan was a .500 team, and without him next year, they’ll probably be a .500 team once again. His offensive line was good, but certainly not great. The point is, a lot of the yards that he made, he made on his own, due to his speed and tough running. I, along with many others over here, have been mystified that some of the bigger programs didn’t show as much interest as he deserved. The only reason could be his size, but his speed and strength are increadible. Some of his runs have been unbelievable. I truly believe that Tech got a great kid and football player.

Wright should be a lot of fun to watch on the Flats. I picture his running style to be very similar to Trindon Holliday’s at LSU because of their similar size and speed. He has a higher rating than Holliday did according to scout.com, and with Coach Johnson’s spread offense he should be really successful.

Mr. Boggs, you might want to research the Marcus Wright thing a little further. I knew Tech was looking at him, and I was following it closely on the recruiting websites. The first one to break any news was the Tulsa site on Rivals. Tulsa had an in-home visit with him, and Wright told them he wanted to check out Tech. Tulsa asked him to honor his commitment and not take visits. He said he was going to anyway, so Tulsa pulled their scholarship and dropped the commitment. Wright later committed to Tech. So he didn’t really “switch”. He got dropped, then we picked him up.

I laugh at the schools that think PJ’s option is “boring”. I watched 5 games of Navys this year and thought it was the most exciting offense to watch in all of college football! It’s not just your typical QB left QB right, there’s people all over the feild and you never know what is going to happen. In the Gailey era I could sit on my couch predicting every call. If people think PJ’s offense was boring, I don’t know how they could of stood watching even one Tech game.

I really excited for the years to come for the ramblin wreck

The good news: Coach Johnson is turning the recruiting tide slowly but surely, which is a relief after losing several very good commitments. The bad news: Coach Hewitt can’t coach during a game nearly as well as he coaches in practice. Evidence: Tech’s consistently weak finishes in close games, and inconsistency at all other times. Congrats on beating Va.Tech, another mediocre team, at home. I am a loyal fan, but it is time to see the writing on the wall. Only one winning ACC record in 7 years? Not good enough. Not nearly good enough.

You may be right about UGA beating GT if the whole team was drunk. It seems that UGA has a lot of practice at drinking from all I read in the AJC. Also, UGA seems to always have a top 10 recruiting season and ahs not had a National Championship since 1980. Being able to hold their booze should be a UGA requirement.

I predict at least 10 more arrests at UGA before football season begins. Anyone think my #’s low ? Adams had no intention of making the BSC change. He dosen’t have the clout for it anyway. All he wanted to do was appease the trailerpark fans.

“Addicted,” I have to agree with your remark about a coach who “coaches ‘em up.” People began to see Chan Gailey as a coach who did not seem to be able to coach ‘em up. Paul Johnson, though, IS that kind of coach. You’ll see the good effects of it very speedily.

I was pulling for Gailey, and said no negatives about him, but from Day One I never thought he was the man Tech needed. An NFL coach gets stars who are already accomplished, and don’t need “coaching up,” in the same way a college kid does.

Robert Lee Dodd’s 31-game unbeaten streak would have been extended past mid-1953, had the NCAA not knifed him by removing the two-platoon rule beginning that year. Modestly or not, he said Tech would have given top-ranked Notre Dame trouble, if he’d had the two platoons, permitting him to coach up players who were not themselves of highest quality.

Good blog. Have been wandering how we’re doing in recruiting though one really can’t get caught up in the rankings too much. Bobby Ross’s class with Shawn Jones, Marco Coleman, Ken Swilling, Willie Clay, William Bell, Rodriguez, Merchant, Battle, etc…were not ranked in the top 20 but won National Championship as Sophmores. I’m thinking wer’re going to see a huge difference in offensive potential just by being able to get outside on the option and reverses. Passing should also get better in terms of completion percentage and bang for the buck.
