BCS vs Playoff?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m not quite sure why Michael Adams suddenly became interested in a renovation of the BCS and an implementation of a eight team play off.
Wait a minute…yes I am. He’s suddenly interested because he thinks UGA got jobbed by the current system.
Lets forget the fact that Auburn got jobbed much more obviously a few years ago. I don’t remember any Michael Adams comments at that time. Auburn went 13-0…winning the SEC and the Sugar Bowl. But I don’t recall any great outrage from the powers that be out in Athens.
Beyond the obviously self serving and horrendous timing on this proclamation, Adams’ play off isn’t realistic in its details.
A eight team play off is too much, especially considering that everyone would have to drop back to an eleven game schedule.
That’s right…general concensus is that everyone would have to reduce their schedule in order to accomodate allowing a select few teams the time needed to play extra playoff games. That means the entire remainder of the NCAA Division I roster of schools would essentially be giving up the revenue from a game.
Yup…Michael Adams wants everyone to give up money out of their budget in order to allow the perennially top football programs the chance to play in a playoff.
So…in essence…we have sour grapes, bad timing, and horrendous logic. Its good for radio talk show fodder, but that’s about it.
Tech & UGA Hoops Both teams are so bad, that we couldn’t even get a local television broadcast. That’s pathetic. UGA vs GT hoops couldn’t even warrant a local broadcast. How does that happen?
I’m a huge Hewitt fan, always have been. But his seat is getting warm…very warm.
We’re at rock bottom…nowhere to go but up now…at least I hope…it can’t get worse than losing to an undermanned UGA team that doesn’t even have a full roster of scholarship players.
Women’s Tennis The Lady Jackets are ranked #1 going into this season. That’s awesome.
And its a good positive note to end this blog on!
Go Jackets!

I could not believe how poorly GT and UGA played. I coached bad 9th grade teams in high school who had better fundamentals. I went to bed at halftime… unheard of for this 48-year Jacket fan… “where have you gone Roger Kaiser, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you….”

Playoff: Used to be for the idea, but not anymore. Even if you had one, someone will still think they were left out. Let it go people. Let it go.
Basketball: We win the game if we make free throws. I have not seen the team in person this year, but saw them twice last year; one win and one loss. But the same thing was apparent in both games. Poor fundamentals and Hewitt substiituting way too much.
Women’s Tennis: Has the AJC noticed the improvement of Women’s sports teams at Tech? Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Track, Softball, etc…

Boggs, you Idiot Bug, I like piling on Adams as much as the next guy, but I have to wonder if you even read his letter to Miles Brand. If you did, you’d find that Adams isn’t upset so much they UGA got jobbed out of the title game, but that we got jobbed out of the Rose Bowl, and his main thrust is that ESPN and hypocrites like Kirk Herbstreit (hypocrite because it was okay last year that Michigan didn’t win their league, but not okay for Georgia this year) hold far too much sway in how the writers and coaches vote in their polls and how the bowls are picked and are overwhelmingly partial to the leagues that they have television contracts with (Big-ZERO, Pac-1, and Big-II). I mean, before the bowls, how many times did some ESPN idiot tell us that Oklahoma was the best team? They didn’t say much after Oklahoma was embarrassed, did they? And how many of the ESPN idiots then picked OSU to beat LSU based on what, the idea that their poor, hurt pride could overcome playing a sucky schedule that didn’t prepare them or their lack of any kind of talent to play with an SEC team? And then, after the game, all we heard from Corso and the rest was USC. Not Georgia, but USC. Couldn’t be because of their Pac-1 ties through ABC, could it, Boggs? I mean, all of that had nothing to do with the fact that CBS ad the SEC are main partners, could it?
Do I need to draft some pictures for you Boggs, or are you following the conversation? Do you need help putting two and two together, or should I get you a slide rule?
Now, Moron, as much as Adams is a liar and a vile villain, how could you argue with that? It’s like he had a moment of clarity and honesty. I don’t expect it to last, mind you, but just because the messenger might be tainted, Bug, doesn’t mean the message isn’t worthwhile if it remains true.
Besides, Boggs, it’s not like Bugland has to worry about playing in the BCS or a playoff well, ever, do they? So why the hell should we care about your decidedly un-expert opinion on the subject matter?
Moron.

I wonder what Michael Adams and UGA fans would think if this playoff system was passed, UGA ran the table, the SEC Championship, and the first round of the playoffs only to face a 2 loss team in final NC game. I guess it doesnt matter because the AJC has already declared UGA next years National Champion. I am looking forward to them falling off of their high horse next season.

Nascar fan, go cry somewhere else. Win out and you don’t have to worry about getting shafted. Why hasn’t Michael Adams ever said anything about a playoff system before. It’s difficult to respect his opinion when it is obvious he is trying to bring attention to his school. Speaking of opinions, nobody wants yours on this blog, so go back to watching cartoons! Next. I keep waiting to see this basketball team mesh. Sometimes, it shows signs, but not very often. It doesn’t seem that we are getting better. As far as the women’s sports, it is great. I love the basketball team we have on the floor. They are a very competitive bunch! Let’s hope the tennis team can repeat! Go Jackets-

Hewitt needs to be fired. A good coach would have done much more with a final four appearance. He obviously isn’t a good X and O guy or motivator.
Just as UGA should probably beat us 6 or 7 out of 10 times in football, we should beat them 7 out of 10 in Bball. Is Hewitt even .500 against UGA?

I want to make a point about Hewitt, since he seems to polarize opinions. He can coach, and no one with any mental capability should understand. No coach can take a team to the NCAA finals without that ability. He does however have a poor view of recruiting. He goes after too many kids from the inner city, and before any racist comments, that’s not a racial statement. When he had kids from around the southeast (many small high schools), he had his run to the top. Most of the kids spent four years, and many graduated. He had abandoned that for kids with one purpose, and that is to go to he NBA as soon as possible (most in one year). This kills the growth of his team, always starting over every year with key position players. He needs to look back at how he got to the top, and go the growth route and get away from these kids who care nothing about the school, league, or success of the team.

Memo to Paul Hewitt…start winnig some bball games at your current school and stop worrying about your “bros” in the BCA. Your team is certainly not making a case for the hiring of more black coaches. This program has slipped dramatically under your tenure. We can’t even beat a poor UGA team with half it’s players missing. We haven’t won a meaningful road game in years. This will be another year missing the NCAA tournament. You are so far overrated its pathetic. One good year out of 8 is not good enough. I hope DRad blows you out like he did Gailey. You’ve had your chance and blown it. Its time for a new bball coach on the flats. Bring back Bobby!……

Playoff: I’d give up a game against Samford to have an 8 team playoff. How much revenue do we get from that game? Sure it helps Samford, but I don’t care. College football is the best sport around.
Basketball: We lost two freshman to the draft and that makes it difficult to build a team. Our better years were when we had kids that stayed for 4 years (Price, Salley, …). I agree with the poster, quit going after the one year and out guys and take some that are good, but will stick around. Hewitt has got to address this in recruiting or he is a goner. Also, he does do too much substituting. Seems to break up any synergy the team gets going.

Every time a Georgia fan comes over here to leave some trash talk on the Tech blog, the Jacket fans get their panties in a wad over “Why are you posting on a Tech blog, go back to the UGA blog, leghumper,” or something to that effect.
So why is Tech’s blogger writing about Michael Adams and his playoff proposal? Doesn’t he have Tech stuff to focus on?
FYI, guys, when we Dawgs laugh about how y’all are obsessed with us, this is the kind of stuff we’re talking about.

Here’s the problem with an eight team playoff: the six major conferences would each demand that their champion be guaranteed a berth in the playoff. That leaves two places for everyone else. It solves nothing. Who would have gone this year? Hawaii? UGA? USC? Mizzou? Kansas? And you can’t say Hawaii got drilled by UGA because we didn’t see that during the season. It solves nothing!

Auburn got “jobbed much more obviously”?
Auburn didn’t get jumped by anyone. USC and Oklahoma were #1 and #2 all year.
UGA got jumped. Auburn did not. To me, it is “obvious” who got jobbed most.

The problem with this blog topic is nobody cares what Tech fan has to say about the BCS or a playoff. That’s like a AA minor league team chipping in on how to run the World Series. Nobody cares. Maybe if there was some issue with the Humanitarial Bowl or the Emerald Bowl we would all be interested in your input. Thank you and have a great day.

Class of ‘98, you’re an idiot. You don’t seem to get that it wasn’t like UGA had a bye week. No, they were not INVITED to the SEC championship because they were not good enough. Meanwhile, LSU was busy beating a team that beat y’all by three touchdowns. End of story.

No need to reduce schedules from 12 to 11 games. Just use the top four BCS games as the first round of playoffs. Two teams would play one extra game and two teams would play two extra games each year…….no big deal and the NCAA gets to keep all of the bowl games in place. I would like to see #1 vs. #8, #2 vs. #7 and so on.

Can’t say much for his manners or ability to post in a rational tone, but NASCARfan actually has a valid point about how ESPN easily influences the voters in how they vote in their polls. Polls are ridiculous and should not be used to pick playoff teams if there is a playoff. Have a committee pick teams like in basketball. There will still be a lot of whining, but at least the criteria will not be what some talking head at ESPN said.

A playoff system could work for college football. The BCS has failed to produce what it calls the number one and number two teams in the nation many years in a row now. Boggs, I hate UGAY as much as the next Tech fan. I’m certainly no fan of Mr. Adams, but the current system stinks. The BCS is worse than the old bowl system. A playoff is needed and it could be done. Don’t let hatred for the Bulldungs sour you on a good idea. If football play-offs can be done in high school and every other NCAA division, they can be done in Div 1.

The terminology BCS is misleading!! There is no ‘Championship Series’, only the (one!!) Championship game. Everything else is as always! We have 6 or 7 Major Bowls, then comes ‘all the other Bowls’. This BCS chatter only serves to distract from the fact that only one post season game matters! What we need is for all 7 Maj. Bowls to matter! A playoff IS possible if we’d only use the Conference champions, and the 7 Major bowls. If a team cannot win it’s own Conference, regardless of the circumstances, it does NOT belong in a post-season Championship Series. In the modern era, all Nat. Champs have been schools that are in one of today’s 8 Major Conferences! B-east; B-10; ACC; SEC; B-12; PAC-10; Mid-Am(?); WAC. Use the top 7 Bowls as the playoffs. Second week of Dec, Conf champs paired off against each other in 4 Bowls. Say, Gator - Orange - Sugar - Cotton. 2 - 3 weeks later the winners face off in two more Bowls, say, Fiesta - Outback. Then, the two left meet in the finale in Jan, -Rose. Each year rotate who each Conf faces in first four Bowls. AND rotate Bowls each year so that ALL Bowls serves as 1st round, 2nd round, and Finale. ALL of these teams would play in ONE Bowl anyway. Only four teams in America would play ONE extra game. Only two teams in the land would play TWO extra games! A Champion can handle it. ALL of the major Bowls would be involved in the process, and this would generate a near frenzy of interest in ALL the Bowls. AND would generate MILLIONS and MILLIONS of $ for the Bowls and the conferences. These seven games would be what the Pro playoffs could only wish to be! True agony or ecstasy! And the competition from the Networks, and their $$ for viewing rights would rival the Super Bowl! This is a dream of every College Fan in America, and no fan could miss a second of it! MILLIONS? Perhaps Hundreds of Millions is more appropriate! Imagine the Networks bidding for who gets what Bowl in which year. The Bowls and the Conferences could just about demand anything and GET it. I think the Conf. and the Bowls better get together on it NOW, because by the end of the 7 - year cycle, there could have been a Billion $$ shuffled around from pocket to pocket. Whomever moves first, gains long-term control. Billions ……. WOW!!
