Johnson-Tenuta would be awesome tandem
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Its been about a week now since Paul Johnson was hired to be the new coach at Georgia Tech.
So what do we know, or suspect, so far?
Coaching staff
From what I’ve read and heard, Giff Smith and Brian Jean-Marie have expressed a desire to remain on the defensive staff under Johnson. It also sounds like they have been involved in some of the recent recruiting visits. This would be huge for the defensive staff, in my opinion. Giff is a rising star in the recruiting ranks and may well develop into a quality defensive coordinator on The Flats if we keep him in the family and don’t let someone steal him away. Coach BJ has produced some of the best linebackers in GT history since joining the staff. Who had heard of KaMichael Hall, Phillip Wheeler, and Gary Guyton before they landed on the national radar as Yellow Jackets? Those guys weren’t highly recruited coming out of high school … they were coached up and developed after they arrived here.
I’m also crossing my fingers and hoping that Coach Kelly stays on staff as the special teams coach. The turnaround in GT special teams should have been one of the major stories in local sports this past season.
I don’t have a solid vibe on John Tenuta at this point. On one hand I hear that he and his family like Atlanta and that one of his sons plays high school football with Radakovich’s son. I hear that he likes Atlanta and feels like he’s well paid. But then on the other hand you have to wonder if two egos the size of Paul Johnson and Jon Tenuta can survive and flourish on the same football staff … especially after one of them was passed over for the job as the head guy. Tech fans can only dream about a Johnson led offense on one side of the ball and a Tenuta led defense on the other … how much fun would that be … if it happens. If it DID happen … that would be Dan Radakovich’s biggest coup yet …
I’d be mildly surprised if we kept any of the offensive staff, to be honest. Johnson will call his own plays, which puts John Bond on the outside looking in. You have to figure that the spread option will require some special instruction from Johnson’s existing offensive line and running back coaches. That puts Joe D’Allesandris and Curtis Modkins on the outside looking in. Both of those guys have done outstanding jobs at Tech and will land good positions elsewhere, no doubt. Buddy Geis was one of Gailey old buddies if I remember correctly. He’s probably gone as well. I don’t see that as a large loss though, since outside of Calvin Johnson we haven’t had exceptional wide receivers for several seasons. We might benefit from some new blood in that position. And I have no feeling at all on Coach Hunter and tight ends. I haven’t heard anything.
Recruiting
AJ Jenkins is officially gone. GT insiders had always figured he the was the recruit most at risk … way back to his original commitment. He’s committed to Illinios now.
Sean Renfree was potentially the biggest recruit in the upcoming class but his style doesn’t match the offense we’ll see at GT next season. So he’s dropped out of the upcoming class and been replaced with Jaybo Shaw. Shaw was a Middle Tennessee State commitment who our staff has been looking at for awhile. He would fit into Johnson’s scheme the offer was reinforced by the new coach. The result was a commitment.
Rumors have been swirling around Chris Jackson a bit as well over the past week or so. Jackson has been one of the ambassadors of this recruiting class and is very tight with ‘08 recruit Drew Little, another GT target at QB. Alabama has been putting the full court press on Jackson and the new staff has been working overtime to make sure we keep Jackson headed to The Flats. This will be one to keep an eye on since Jackson was very attached to Chan Gailey and may need some reassurance in order to maintain his committed status. This is a kid who is a Tech fan and who has no interest in UGA. He’s a national level recruit. He’s EXACTLY the kind of recruit that we absolutely cannot let get away.
Speaking of Alabama…it seems like our old buddy Geoff Collins has been learning at the altar of Nick Saban. Saban swooped into Atlanta when he got the Alabama job and hired Collins away from Georgia Tech. Ever since then, Alabama has been targeting Georgia Tech recruits … gee, wonder why that would happen? Maybe when Saban skips along to the next job he’ll take Collins with him … it shouldn’t take long given ‘ole Nick’s past record.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
Kansas will come to town undefeated and looking to stay that way. The Yellow Jackets have looked largely confused and ineffective this season. This is one of those games where NOONE in the country thinks Tech has a chance, except maybe the kids in the locker room before the game. Because of that … look out for an upset. Tech has the talent to make it a game, if they can play as a team instead of a group of individuals.

We need to try to keep WR AJ Jenkins & WR Chris Jackson which will allow GT to use more of a spread attack much like FL.& OR. and enable us to get more high profile recruits once they see we are committed to spreading the ball to the WR in addition to the RB.*

I love it!! Tech’s program is a joke around the league. Good for us…we get some good recruits from that area (well, not like we couldn’t get them from you before). 4 wins next year, MAYBE.

Funny how Clemson fans to talk trash. Bowden hasn’t done a thing but keep Clemson from falling apart. And ya’ll just gave him a raise LOL. BTW… How is GT a joke? Paul Johnson being hired has been listed as one of the greatest coaching searches conducted by ANY program this year. No one is laughing. Everyone is nervous. Enjoy Dwyer, Roddy, and Nesbitt running it down your throats for the next 3 years.

Clemson - talk about a wannabe program. Never a real winner without soon going on probation (Pell, Ford). Bowden hasn’t been much without Rodriguez despite regularly recruiting well at Clemson. Gailey would still be at Tech if he had had the talent playing for him that Bowden has had, but please keep extending that contract.

TLP- what are you smoking? “Paul Johnson being hired has been listed as one of the greatest coaching searches conducted by ANY program this year”….where did you get that fact from? Warlock Illustrated? Can’t blame these recruits for not wanting to come to Tech!! They try to stay away from weidos like yourself. BTW- why do you guys think Goof Smith is such a great recruiter? He has had one DECENT class since he has been there. If he was such a great recruiter, then why aren’t you guys bringing in a top 10 class every year?

Unlike your comments, CM, TLP’s are based on some authority - check out both Rivals and Scout websites’ cloumnists. Smith has only been the recruiting coordinator since 2006, so last year was his first class and this year’s class is already rated higher than any than his predecessors three classes despite losing momentum in October when thinngs got dicey for Gailey. We will never be able to consistently recruit a top 10 class with the limited curriculum (how many Clemsom players take calculus?), but can consistently recruit top 25 wwhich should be more than enough to handle Clemson on a regular basis. Know the facts or go back to your own blog….

It would be great to have Johnson and Tenuta on the same staff, if the latter could have the same autonomy he’s enjoyed under Gailey. Like many Jacket fans, I appreciate and respect Coach Tenuta. But we also respect Coach Johnson’s ability and authority to assemble a successful and effective staff.

Clemson? What makes any Klimpson comment relevant anywhere? Not only do they have wet dreams about being in the SEC, they can’t even consistently succeed in the ACC.
The ACC is a worthy, competitive league, to be sure, but not the SEC’s equal in football most years.

Why do Tech fans love Tenuta? How many games has this man’s “defense” lost for you? Sure, beating Notre Dame and Samford is great. But, when it’s crunch time, late in the game, your defense folds like a chair. 90% of the time you have gassed out shortly after halftime. This why you lose. You see mediocrity as success.

I’m sure you feel a little lonely in this discussion, Huh Clemp Mania? Nothing substantial to back up anything you say. UGA consistently brought in the top recruiting class when Donnan was there. Guess what? He left with a 3 game losing streak to GT. Don’t talk to me about recruiting classes. Good coaches make them more than some highly RATED player. He turns them into highly SUCCESSFUL players. Bowden has had his share of Blue Chip talent and has done absolutley NOTHING. He’s 4-5 against the Yellow Jackets even with his supposedly superior talent. SO MOVE ON!!!

Please do not be scared to let Tenuta go his own way. If wants to stay please allow him however no begging! We need a total attitude change down on the Flats and keeping him may not allow this. It is new way of life we are seeking. Please help us all welcome receivers coach Brian Bohannon to Tech. He is a former UGA Bulldog wide out and he has serious talent and great pedigree with coaching. His father was Lloyd Bohannan, a true legend at Griffin High School just south of downtown. This kid used to tape my ankles and has been emersed in football his whole life. He is also a winner where ever he goes!

Tenuta’s defenses folded because they were usually on the field 75% of the game. The guys are gassed because they never get a break. Our offense was weak and anemic without Choice and couldn’t score PERIOD in the redzone. GT lacked depth on the defensive side of the ball, also. Tenuta is not to blame for the losses. Blame Gailey’s NFL play calling.

I am a UGA alum, but I would like to give my “2 cents.” I think Coach Tenuta is a great D-Cord. He always has a pretty good plan for us. It seems that CPJ has always had to score as many points as possible, because he never had a great defense. Giff Smith seems like a pretty good recruiter judging by his class last year. Coach Johnson was a good hire as well. I wish you guys the best of luck up until the end of November!

Johnson and Tenuta, now that is a working combo that should spell nothing be success. More ball control, more scoring, fresh defense all game. Johnson is a coach committed to winning, not committed to keeping a quarterback in the game to see how many ways he can lose, in spite of a great defense. Tenuta’s defenses have kept Gailey from losing over half of his wins.

First of all, you’re kidding yourselves if you think Tenuta’s going to be a part of this new staff. Secondly, 1-AA Jacksonville State is likely to beat Paul Johnson’s squad early next year. Tech is no good and is now getting excited about grabbing recruits from Middle Tennessee. Forget about beating Auburn’s Lake Hartwell extension. They and Georgia will be beating the insects for the next 20 years. If you’re smart, you’ll put Cumberland and Oglethorpe back on your schedule. Oh, wait a second, the last time Tech played Oglethorpe, the Stormy Petrels won.

Chris Boggs’ ending comment “Tech has the talent to make it a game, if they can play as a team instead of a group of individuals” may just be possible. A recent comment by Navy’s Senior inside linebacker, Matt Wimsatt may give some hint as to what Johnson can develop in team dynamics when Wimsatt said after the annoucement that PJ was leaving; “We’ve got to remind ourselves that we play for each other, not for the coach. I think the biggest mistake one of the younger guys could make is to leave now. It’s the job of the seniors and juniors to make them understand that at Navy, you play for your teammates, the Brigade and the academy, not just for the coaches.”

Something to consider:
At the other schools that CPJ has coached at, there were a limited number of fast, athletic players. Because he is an offensive guy, I am sure there was some bias about putting the best players on the offensive side of the ball.
At GT, his talent pool may not be as numerous as at a larger, more academically diverse public university, but he will have more of the fast, athletic players to use on both sides of the ball than he has had previously. I think you will see that GT’s defense will not see a great dropoff with or without Tenuta, but the offense will become 10 points a game better right off the bat!!
With that said, I would also like to see GT hold on to Tenuta, but I will support CPJ’s staff, no matter who ends up with the DC position.

What is truly amazing is Tech was competitive the last several years with an offense that appeared to be ranked somewhere between #75 and #90 nationally. If we can get those numbers up to #35 to #50 and not slip to bad on defense were talking a possible sea change in possibilities each year. We’re not that far off. What has been missing is an option attack and some execution between the Qb’s and Wr’s. If that were to happen we’re looking at turning the table on the Dawgs.

oh my goodness StraightJacket, did you accuse Clemson of making a committment to mediocrity? One thing for sure if any group of fans can recognize mediocrity it is the Rambling Geek Squad all 15,000 or 16,000 of them who show up for home games to eat free hot dogs, free pizza, free soft drinks and rub elbows with the visiting teams fans. It is just a shame that the powers that be have a football game to distract from the fun. Why don’t they have a Dungeons & Dragons or Myst competetion instead? It would draw a bigger crowd than Yaller Jerkit football. Johnson might be able to turn the Ramblers into a competetive team but until he does all you have to remember is that the Clemson’s will be in Atlanta for the Chicken Bowl and the Tekkie’s will be in Boise for the Ty-D Bowl Blue Rug Bowl. Nothing says mediocrity like the Humanitarian Bowl for then umpteenth time in your storied traditional program.

PJ’s offense at Navy this year ranked 1st in the nation in rushing, 8th in the nation in scoring offense, and 24th in the nation in total offense. That with an offensive line that was on average 30 pounds or more lighter than the opposing defensive line. In fact, our motto at Navy is “We may be small, but we’re slow.”
I urge all of you to tune in Thursday night to the Poinsettia Bowl, to see first hand how Navy’s offense operates. It’s not a wishbone or a veer, but it’s a spread option, with the QB under center instead of in the shotgun. Particularly pay attention to the line splits.

Are you kidding me? Clemson and GT putting each other down after what 9 seasons of games under a 5 pt spread and swapping W/Ls for so long. We are in the same boat, both trying to ride a bigger boat, but not quite there.
As far as speacial teams being better, I think without sanctions we have the ability to get more capable bodies on the bench and competing for the special teams slots. This will make special teams better and will get more kids experience so they can compete for play time. All this equals more competition and better team talent. No sanctions = a better team. Gaily did a great job with the talent and limits he had, so good luck to him.
I hope Tenuta stays. He will surely get a HC job soon, in the meantime PJ can have him groom a replacement. Egos should not be an issue as the higher you move, the more egos are involved. Better special teams and a better offence will be a big help for the D late int he game.
Good luck to Renfree and Jenkins. Jackson is a jacket all the way, he always has been and he will stay right where he belongs. I think like most, he was concerned when his coach was terminated and needed to re-evaluate. I look forward to seeing him on the field in 2009, or on special teams next year. He will be part of the 2011 National Championship team!!

I think it is extremely important to keep John. He knows The Institute and our traditions. He has allowed our defensive players to attend Tickle Piles.

As I have stated before, there have been ongoing conversations with Coaches Jon Tenuta, Giff Smith and Brian Jean-Marie, and we probably will not hear anything until after the bowl game.
The last I heard is that Giff and Brian will probably be retained, assuming they want to stay on board, and the ball is now in Coach Tenuta’s court as he has an offer on the table to continue as Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach.
There have been monetary incentives offered for Coach T. to stay so now we just wait and see. The other Assistant Coaches not mentioned Coaches are being evaluated during Bowl preparation. Several Assistant Coaches from Coach Johnson’s staff from Navy will be joining after the bowls.
Stay tuned.

If he really knew he would come out with some facts instead of the I know but I can’t tell you crap. This is sports blog and as such is filled with a bunch of folks who try to impress everyone with their expertise or the secrets that only they know.

Chris, are these the same published reports that had GA Tech negotiating with Chris Hatcher? If you check back on all the old blogs on the AJC, I was the one who said that Coach Paul Johnson was the one negotiating with GA Tech, not Coach Hatcher.
I am also the one who has told the AJC, after they ran a blog about Tech losing Renfree and then another blog that Tech’s other recruits were getting antsy, that a QB was about to commit to Tech, before any of the recruiting sites had picked up on it (check the dates). The AJC responded that they couldn’t contact every recruit to see if the coaching change would make them interested in Tech. Several days later, Rivals and Scout mentioned a QB that was zeroed in on the Tech radar, and then low and behold, he was committed. I think I know what I am talking about when I say I think I know what is going on from the “inside”.
I don’t care if you believe what I am saying about the coaching situation, but I can tell you that what you are “citing” from sources about Coach Tenuta already being dismissed is incorrect. That does not mean that Coach Tenuta will be back, it just means that he is not definitely gone at this point.

Jimson from Clemson, as I mentioned to Chris, above, I have laid out specific examples that you can refer to, in writing in these blogs and in Rivals and Scout, and compare the dates to my posts, and see for yourself.
I frankly do not care what you think. The facts will speak for themselves. And as I said to Chris, this does not mean Coach Tenuta will be back, it also means it doesn’t mean he won’t.

Why do tech people have such great esteem for Coach Tootie? Maybe he wins one game a year for Tech but the other games the defense is out to lunch. The Dawgs put 31 on you this year without much effort.

Wow! Amazing how 1 hire has Clemson and UGA fans SO SCARED TO DEATH. I did not know we were that much of a threat. Coach Johnson and Coach Tenuda, re: the above crazys, if you could put both your egos in the same hat for 2 seasons you would have a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP for your resume’s.

YOU MY FRIEND ARE A COMEDIAN! IF YOU THINK THAT UGA IS SCARED OF THE NERD HEARD GUESS AGAIN. I WOULD SAY THAT GT WINNING 5 OUT OF THE LAST 25 WOULD MAKE US SCARED. NOT!!!!
Clempson… On the other hand, they are scared of everybody. Auburn will have a field day against them.

Man, you guys are mean. This Dawg knows Tech hired a good man. He’s won national championships, and you don’t do that anywhere without being good. But, you better leave him alone to form his own staff. I can assure you that he has a much better grip on Tech’s needs than the AD, the fat Jackets, the fans, the bloggers, etc. When he finally pulls the hiring trigger, you better welcome the selection. If not, you’ll lose him and have no one to blame but yourselves. Oh, by the way, we aren’t scared. We’re just glad our future victories will be more meaningful. Have a great calculus exam.

Coach Johnson had better get the word out that he plans to pass more at Tech than he did at Navy! This will be important in keeping and recruiting wide receivers, tight ends, and quarterbacks. It will also be necessary for a winning season. Throwing an average of only 10 times a game (at Navy last season) with Tech’s competition is a prescription for losing some games. The option is fine and should be successful with the right personnel, but the teams in the top 25 are usually those who have a top passing attack.

Paul Johnson calling ‘em on offense, and Tenuta calling ‘em on defense, would be a great combination. I hope Tenuta stays.
But what are we talking about? Why are we talking at all? Johnson makes the decision whether to keep Tenuta, or not, doesn’t he?

Smack from Clemson is a real joke, even funnier than smack from UGA. Tech has been able to beat Clemson for years with inferior talent and that’s not going to change. PLEASE KEEP BOWDEN IN CLEMSON.

anyone thought that maybe the defense gasses late in the game because they offense caused them to be out on the feild all game. A defense can only be effective if they have an offense to back them up. I think keeping tenuta could possibly be the icing on the cake for this new coaching move. I for one do not want to see him go. Does anyone remember what the defense was like before we had him. Sure our offense scored40 points a game but we had to do that to win cause the other teams were scoring 40 on us

Why is Tenuta so great? Georgia scored 31 points, Maryland and Virginia 28 each, North Carolina 25, Duke and Boston College 24, Virginia Tech 27. We need better that.

Calvin, in the losses, Tech held 3 of 5 teams (VT, BC and UGA) to less than their season average for scoring. The other two were really close games (and within a point or two of their season average). In all of them, the GT offense made serious mistakes that lead to defensive scores or huge plays that set the other teams up for quick scores.
Forgetting about yardage and time of possesion, the fact of the matter is, if your defense holds the offense to at or below their scoring average, but you have to spend so much extra time on the field, it is hard to win.
Tenuta has done a fantastic job with the defense. Sacks, tackles for loss, even total defense, Tech was competivie (i.e. just looking at the stats). Problem is, you have to be good on both sides of the ball, and the offense simply stunk this year.

I love reading when Tech fan asked why fans of other schools get on THEIR Blog. Heck, read UGA’s blog it’s loaded with Tech people.
Personally I read the Tech Blog because it’s like reading the Comics in the paper. Tech people trying to talk smack against Georgia’s football team is absurd. It’s so hilarious! You guys are legends in your own minds. They OWN YOU! Pick on a school you ave beaten….. Say ClemPson.

Given the enthusiastic support Jon Tenuta has received from Paul Johnson’ look for Tenuta to consider: LSU, Miami, and USC. Washington looks like they want him, but I doubt they can afford him.

Seeing as how a Southern Miss Coordinator, you gotta be kidding me, named Womack just signed on as DC. I would guess Coach Tenuta is cleaning out his desk today. Sad ending for a guy that got his players to play above themselves. As a Dawg fan, the last few years I never worried about the Tech Offense. But your D was another story. Tenuta was a great motivator against us anyway. Well thanks Paul Johnson, I feel better about it being 8 in a row now.

I want to see GT become a 8-9 win team! But they have too many things working against them! They play in a lousy conference. They are in a state w/ an SEC team (a very good SEC team). Those two issues they can do little about. Now the issue of recruiting and hiring is something they can do much about. And let’s face it; they have fallen FAR short in those two areas. GT had the chance to bring the Evil Genius (who now resides in Columbia.SC) to town some three years ago! They did not have the marbles to pull that off! Guess GT likes soft coaches like Chan who can’t recruit. Johnson is a good coach and a decent man, but he is not the answer for GT! Has a track record for winning, but absolutely no track record for big time recruiting!

From the report on the hiring of our new DC it appears that PJ was ready to keep Tenuta on as the DC but he wanted to move on. As Insider has said there was probably an offer, but Jon has also probably received an offer from Les Miles. Tenuta is under contract through Jan. 08 so he’s going to stay on to be Head Coach in the bowl game so he can have that on his resume. Because of his loyalty and out of respect both ways I believe he will be allowed to to this.
We will be OK with a new DC. And we wish Jon T the best as he moves on to his new position.
