Jackets don’t give up, but watching is brutal
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m sitting at my PC with the TV playing the background.
I’m disgusted. No other word will suffice at this point.
Tech has the ball in the shadow of our own goalline and we try to throw our way out of the hole…resulting in a sack and fumble which turns into the go ahead score for UNC.
So then we get the ball back and we drive down the field and we get into scoring range and we start using that direct snap play…bog down…and miss a field goal!
What the heck is our coaching staff thinking? I mean…I can’t make any sense of it.
Why not pound the ball out from under your goalpost and use the nation’s best punter if you get stopped, to clear things out?
We didn’t…and we coughed the ball up and UNC scored and went ahead.
So then we have a great kickoff return and we get into scoring range…and you pull both QBs and start snapping to Choice instead of trying to get in the endzone?
And then Bell shanks the field goal…par for the course…
….
Ok…the defense stopped them…we’ll get the ball back.
…
Oh my…we’re gonna get another kick.
Stand by while I go rub my daughter’s head for good luck…
…
So we’re sitting on the sofa and she’s praying, “Please God let Georgia Tech make the field goal”
We make it…
…a flag?!?!?
You have to be kidding me?
On UNC!
We can’t decline it?
We have to kick again?
The football Gods HATE us.
….
Daughter and I are praying again, “Please God let Georgia Tech make the field goal.”
Its up…it looks like crap…but its good! Tech leads!
…
UNC is trying a 63 yarder….its partially blocked…Tech wins.
…
I’ll be honest…this team is brutal to watch and cheer for…but they don’t give up. They never give up.
More later…its time to go play with the kids and cheer for Kentucky.

This was a tough game for either team to lose because of missed opportunities. But when it counted the defense rose to the occasion and gave the offence a chance to win. congratulations to the jackets.

What’s with the fake field goal call. If you want to give one of the best field goal kickers a chance for a long FG with a 9 point lead, OK. If you want to punt, you have one of the great punters in college football on your sideline, OK. So why do a stupid trick play and give NC momentum? Dumbest call I’ve seen in some time.

I applaud Tech for trying some different plays today and actually executing them. Unbelievable punting by Brooks, the best in college football. Congrats to Choice, Bennett, and Nesbitt on their TD passes. UNC has played teams tough all year and has a bright future with their new coach. Things could be worse, like Alabama ( SEC powerhouse) losing to Louisianna Monroe today. I love it!!

It is brutal. I am glad Tech won and you have to give the defense credit for hanging in there and playing tough the whole game.
But I think most of us have seen everything we need to see to know that Coach Gailey and his staff just aren’t doing the kind of job this team deserves.
Coach Gailey has had six years to put his stamp on this program and nobody outside of Athens is happy with the results. This team has the players and the talent where we shouldn’t lose to teams like UVa and Maryland. Although Tech beat both Duke and UNC, both games were sloppy.
I know the Jackets are capable of beating Georgia and I sure hope they do, but none of what we’ve seen the last few weeks inspires any confidence.

Another quality win by the stingarettes today. Way to go out and beat the powerhouse from NC. I just laugh so hard when you guys have to ride the coat-tails of other teams b/c you cannot beat UGA. CW, I know you Trekies like to play fantasy games like D&D, but it is time to leave middle earth and realize that UGA is going to hand it to you. Let me break it down for you. You have no offense, period. Tinky Winky Taylor cannot pass gas. Chan Gayley cannot coach his way out of his depends. We will play around your blitz with solid running by Moreno, and screen plays. Your secondary will be pick apart by Stafford and Co. You have a TC, but he will not be able to carry your team to a V, much less a close game.

Couldn’t agree more with the horrendous playcalling today. Throwing on our own 8. Running, running, running on their 25. What the dickens is going on here. This is madness, total incompetence. If you don’t think fumbles have anything to do with coaching you are a fool. Please, Bennett should be COACHED to COVER THE BALL when he is running. The fact he was carrying it in one hand while he was approaching a defender is a bad decision and a result of POOR coaching. We can’t continue down this path. Things will only get worse.
Let’s go Jackets…and get a real coach.

buzzer beater,
Keep smokin the crack pipe buzzer beater. Are you seriously insinuating that by criticizing Chan one does not “support the Jackets.” I would have to say the opposite is true- anybody that supports this pathetic coach is responsible for the deterioration of our football program. My grandma could have called a better game today. I think UNC was really caught off guard with the direct snap to Choice. And I’m so happy we have the ultra athletic and speedy Taylor Bennett at wideout when Choice takes the snap. He is really a deep threat.
Start Nesbitt at UGA and back up the bus on the coaching staff- except for Tenuta and Giff Smith. Its all over for you “we are an average team” Joes. Wake up loser.

First off, I know you UGA fans seem to get some kind of joy from posting over here, but, unless you have something intelligent to say, and can say it intelligently, just stay over on the UGA blog, ok?
Our season shouldn’t have to be defined by whether we beat Georgia. In the ACC, Tech should be getting 5 or 6 wins every year and competing at the top every season. EVERY season, not sometimes. Part of our problem is an alumni that thinks 7 wins every year is just great. I want to win championships, and the first one that has to be won is the ACC Championship. If we play to compete there, we’ll be more competitive with the SEC and Georgia. Let’s face it, the size, curriculum, and entry requirements at Tech are never going to let us compete evenly with the UGA’s, Auburns, Florida’s of the world in football, but we should be able to pull off victories and always have a chance. If we beat those teams only 4 of 10 times, ok, as long as we beat the Marylands, UVA’s, and NC States 8 of 10 times. Unfortunately, Chan hasn’t met that bar, and doesn’t look likely to. Today’s game was embarrassing. 4 fumbles, especially the two by Bennett were unconscionable, and should not have happened, and, yes, I, too, blame coaching. Finally, the FG that Bell missed, 3 straight direct snaps to Choice, all to the right side, making the angle for Bell as difficult as possible. Only the ineptness of Carolina and their awful punting game saved us today. The defense continues to give up too many big plays, but that’s going to happen with the way this team plays defense. When they HAD to make stops, they did.
So, I am hoping maybe the coaching staff is holding something in reserve for UGA. Without some creativity and luck, it could be an ugly Saturday next week.

We are gonna get embarrassed next week. A home field “nail biter” against a team that will probably finish 4-8????? Doesn’t this sound familiar: Tech starts the season strong, but limps to season-end; UGA stumbles early, but gets on track and finishes with impressive wins.
If our GT plays like we have for the past 3 games (VT, Dook, UNC), then I don’t even want to know the final score. But I will constantly be reminded of it for ANOTHER year like I have since Gomer Gailey came to GT. I’m so glad he thinks of it as “just another game”.

Ironmike,
UGA rarely loses out of conference on Richt’s watch (bc & wva in bowls) with around ten wins vs the ACC. Plan on leaving around haltime at the UGA ATL Homegame (figure close to 30K Dawgs in the stands). If you even watch tech games.
P.S. I usually let my gt drop(flunk)out off work for this game as a motivational tool.
P.S.S. a gt diploma just means “Ctrl Alt Del” for Georgia Grads that manage to do just fine in the real (non-cyber) world with our “horrible schooling.”

thank god my other team has a real coach.
Jim Tressel.
if oleary had quite a year earlier Tressel would have been available but gt has the ‘we have to go after a big name’ syndrome so many programs have.
ask alabama how thier big name coach is doing after losing to la monroe at home today. lmao. that sec is soooooooo tough.
my point about mentioning jim tressel is… there are a lot of great football coaches out there.
we need to find a young up n comer who likes to mingle with the fan base (unlike gailey). one who can talk to the press and be a spokesperson for gt (unlike gailey). a coach who can do more than just stand there on the field like a rock (like gailey).
chan’s mediocre record (and personality) is the reason why the fan base is split. we need to eneregize the fan base and find a coach with a some life in his veins.
i do believe that our only chance at winning next weekend is to fire gailey now and make the uga game his last as the gt coach. that way the players can try and send out their coach a winner. lord knows i dont see our team gaining any fire any other way.

“WOW” what idiotic play calling. You barely miss giving up a safety and you still try the same play. Absolutely NUTS. I’ve been one of those that has said Chan should stay. But after watching this game I truly see that Chan can’t coach. Some of his decisions towards the end of the game should have cost Tech the game. Another glaring weakness is his inability to use his talent he has on the sideline. Where was J. Dwyer at. Parts of the game that I watched I never saw him run the ball. It should have been Dwyer and Choice down the stretch. Dwyer should get atleast a third of the carries. I was excited when Bond became off.cord. but my gosh he’s as stupid as Chan is. He doesn’t have an idea when to run or when he should pass. And that direct snap may work against poor defenses, and maybe a play or two, but you’ve got to be more creative with it. With what I saw saturday from our coaching staff I see a humiliating defeat next sat. The Dawgs are going to chew us up, spit us out, and then come back for more. This has got to be the most inept coaching staff in college football. Please Rad. get us a coach that can motivate, bring back some enthusiasm to our program, and knows how to coach.

THINK about it DRAD going on 3rd year here .. new AD almost NEVER keeps coaches unless team is rocking (and we are not) .. it is in HIS best interest to get rid of Chan ..
if DRAD leaves Chan after this year, Chan is officially “DRAD’s guy” and we KNOW that isnt going to happen.
Get this stiff out if here .. he is KILLING the potential of this program and playing the sloppiest, most boring football around … no wonder why Atlanta hasnt adopted us?.. who would support the walking dead? Chan is executing his orders perfectly. When David Braine set the bar at “winning seasons and an occasional 9 or 10 win year” he was undoubredly echoing the directives of Tech’s administration.
There has been no more consistent program in college football than Tech under Gailey. Seven wins and a bowl, along with the mandated occasional 9 wins last year make Tech under Gailey the model for consistency and meeting the expectations of administration. I don’t believe there is any way Gailey will be fired this year, and as a founding member of Fans of Chan I fully support his long tenure as coach of the yellow jackets.
On a separate note, 2 of the 32 new Rhodes scholars announced this morning are from UGA. Has anybody heard how many were from Tech?

This was a must win for Tech. The season of great possibilities had turned to a season of total disappointment. Again the coaching staff (led by Chan the Man) made some very poor calls late in the game that almost snatched defeat right out of the jaws of victory. But, the player never quit and were determined to win. This was a great victory for the players.

Tashard’s stats have been compared to Jerry Mays and Ramblin’ Robert Lavette. He needs to watch film of their victories over the dogs. I remember we had the ball and the lead with the clock running down when Jerry broke one for about 30 yards for a first down which allowed us to run out the clock. He held the ball high over his head during the run as BDS exploded. I’d love to see Tashard do the same thing!

I have been a Gailey supporter from the beginning, but this year has tried my patience and to say the least I’ve been disappointed. But you people screaming for his scalp now are the same ones who were screaming for it last year because he had Reggie Ball ahead of Taylor. Now we know that Taylor was not ready to take the reins yet last year. Have any of you admitted that Chan probably made the RIGHT decision last year? With the outstanding Senior class we had last year, would YOU have entrusted that team to an inexperienced QB? I still believe Bennett will continue to get better - GET OFF HIS BACK!! I played in HS and know enough football to see that Taylor would be having a terrific year if he his receivers were better (and they ARE better than the beginning of the year, which is accredited to COACHING, HELLO!!). Look at the game Greg Smith had yesterday - I was pretty hard on Smith earlier this year but he took a shot in the middle of the field yesterday that I KNOW he would not have six games ago.
It’s really comical to read the rants on here sometimes. You rail about Gailey not being bold. Yet what do you think the pass Choice-to-Bennett pass was? Had it gone wrong and been an INT you people would have screamed “why not run Choice down their throat”? Had he pounded the ball with Tashard and been unsuccessful, you would have screamed about being “predictable”. Then the fake FG punt - had he punted you would have screamed that he was “too conservative”, had he gone for it you would have screamed “kick a FG and at least get some points”, had he kicked the FG and missed you would have bellowed “punt them down in their own end and let the D hold ‘em.” Worst of all, had the fake been successful and the ball had rolled dead on UNC’s 2, you would have given Chan no credit!!!!
GROW UP. You people on here just like to gripe. I admit I was fuming for Gailey’s head yesterday also, but it dawned on me that he should be retained for at least 3 reasons.
The recruiting class of last year - and what looks like a good group this year, IF THE HOWLS FOR CHAN’S SCALP WILL STOP. Just read what the #4 DT on Scout.com said, that he’d “love to play” for Gailey. You think that kid doesn’t get to see and talk to any top coach in the country, including the hallowed MR at UGAg? Why would the kid say that if Gailey isn’t “connecting” to the young people he coaches? Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and while it took 4 years to get rolling Gailey has a stream of talent coming in. SHUT UP and don’t make it any harder than it already is to get the talent level at GT up to par. If Gailey stays and the recruiting class is sub-par, will any of you feel responsible for creating a negative climate at the school you CLAIM to support so passionately??
The AA simply can’t afford to fire Chan. To get anyone better will require a lot more $$$ and like it or not the money just isn’t there to let him go AND hire a top notch coach.
Gailey now has a real OC in John Bond - sure he hasn’t gotten the O where it needs to be, but with an inexperienced QB and green receivers, it takes time to build an offense. Remember we were 5-6 with the Fridge calling the plays the first couple of years under O’Leary.
Tony Barnhart said it best - “be careful what you wish for”. The late, great Kim King also said that a coaching change is painful and the last resort, because no matter WHO you get, there will be a 3 or 4 year lag before it gets better.
CLOSE RANKS and SHUT UP CALLING FOR CHAN’S SCALP, GET BEHIND THE ‘JACKETS, ESPECIALLY THIS WEEK!!!

tech should have a lot of motivation for this game and that makes them dangerous. They have absolutely nothing to lose.
With UGA climbing to #6 in the rankings and two of the teams in front of UGA playing next week… tech can spoil UGA’s BCS bid, top five ranking, and 8th straight win against the jackets.
That is everything to the tech fans at this point, given that tech is suffering through yet another mediocre season themselves.
This would make their season and UGA has to show up with the same intensity they have for the last four games to avoid the unthinkable and unmentionable.

John,
relax. UGA would like to play in their fourth SECG in 7 years, but a win against tech guarantees them a spot in a great BCS bowl game and a top 5 ranking.
Basically, as long as UGA takes care of business against tech, either option is a good one.
1.) TN loses and UGA plays #1 LSU for the SEC title
OR
2.) TN wins and UGA plays another top 5-8 team in a major bowl, the likes of which tech has not been to in over 15 years
With those options I can tell you “it is great to be a Georgia Bulldog”

It’s not good for your heart when you watch a game like that with so much/ so little on the line. One one hand, losing to UNC is something you can hardly live with. On the other hand, it would have sealed the fate of the most lifeless ‘coach’ in football. It’s a winning season/ record in the ACC, but it’s also more than that. It’s a sh!tty bowl or a ‘less-sh!tty’ bowl. It makes you want to watch the Georgia game next week, but as always of late, with your heart on your sleeve and your eyes half closed. You think “we can’t win, but we have to.” You pray to win, but know it’s probably all for spite. You turn your cell phone off so you can at least delay the text message and calls from your friends and family who are all ‘Dawgs’ fans. There’s something honorable about being down and taking it like a man, but how much can a man take? I guess you can take it until you die a slow painful death. But for now you expect the worst, but hope for the best, even when there really is not a whole lot of hope. Heck, even the Governor is a Bulldog…
What a better time to shine though? What a better time to beat Georgia when they have so much to lose and we have nothing but a terrible excuse for a coach to give up? TO HELL WITH GEORGIA and UP WITH THE WHITE AND GOLD!

when does the AJC cut bait, dump tech coverage and cover a real program like Betune-Cookman or Savannah St.
Face it techies:
1) all your “grads” call me from Bangalore during suppertime.
2) your “athletic” dept. gets propped up by the AJC for no reason. I guess choking in basketball sells papers.
3) insert homophobic Emerald Bowl joke here.
and
4) like the post above says, 51-7 looks good right about now.
ATTENTION ALL TECHIES!!!
outside of the AJC sympathy coverage in Atlanta you posses no presence in the real world (probably most UGA dorm rats destroy you in the EverWarcraftSecondlife, too).
Instead of dinigrating the University of Georgia Graduate Patriots; please, embrace us. You cain’t drive the bandwagon (we saw what happened to the wreck), but y’all may freeze in our shadow.

Chan is demoralizing this team. When Taylor Bennett calls the plays in the huddle starting with, “Y’all ain’t gonna believe this $hit.” we’re really in trouble.
The direct snap to Tashard puts an already banged up kid 4 or 5 yards deep in the backfield.
The Choice-to-Bennett pass was a nice thing but that was the first time it had worked — ever!
Chan has not given up calling plays. This is 100% his offense. It is the most predictable, boring game plan ever.
Chan must go and he must go now!! Georgia is going to beat us like a rented mule.

Bowl game selections make me ill. Bowl games should be a reward for a team’s accomplishments during the regular season. However, the component that is most important is the local community where the bowl is located and if they can fill the seats. This leaves teams like Wake Forest (with a small student population) to fall down in the bowl selection even with a good team.
It just isn’t right. The conferences should require bowls to get the teams as they finish in the rankings and not leave it up to the bowls to “select” the team.

Do you guys screaming for Chan to be canned have an alternative that can achieve what you think Tech should achieve?
How many of you have played the college game at the level of the SEC and ACC?
His players like to play for him and he wins. He has been doing a great job of recruiting. And, Tech is a tough school for which to recruit players because of the limited curriculum.
His present team is only two plays from a 9 and 2. It was tough to lose at Virginia but a fumbled punt followed up with a holding call cost Tech that game. And, at Maryland a holding call behind the play added 10 yards to a field goal attempt to win the game.
I played the game with Dodd as my coach. And, we lost some games because of mistakes like the above. Also there were times when we came out flat.
Even Dodd had vocal critics. Many questioned his play calling and called him too conservative for punting on third down and not throwing the ball more.
I will be the first to state that Chan is not Dodd but Chan is building something at Tech that should be allowed to continue.
If you don’t like what he does why don’t you write Chan directly and stop hiding behind “blog names”?

First things first, when you’re talking college athletics, the academics of the school shouldn’t even really enter the conversation. The athletes are held to an entirely different standard and have so much extra help available to them that they may as well not be attending the same school as the rest of the students.
Georgia is a fine school. If I wanted a liberal arts degree, I would have gone to Georgia. For the sciences or business/economics, it becomes a significantly more difficult choice. A friend of mine just graduated from Tech with a degree in Biochemistry, and she’s doing her PhD in Infectious Disease at Georgia because they are one of the best in that field. I’d probably go to Georgia State for business before either Tech or Georgia. For engineering, it’s a no-brainer. Tech all the way.
I really do wish my fellow Tech fans could stop ripping on Georgia academics, because there’s really nothing to rip on them about. Georgia is a stellar school.

Look. It boils down to this. We want a perennial winning football program and now it just isn’t there and I don’t see it developing with the current coaching, recruiting and admin staff. We had a winner in the past and can again but get serious. Other high academic schools can do it, so can we. Hey Tech, get with it or get out.

UGA will know the outcome of the UT/UK game before 3:30 Saturday. If UK wins UGA will be thinking ahead to their next visit to Atlanta, not this one. If UT wins they will be disappointed and have their heads down. Either way TECH wins because it will mean a lot more to them. TECH wants/needs to beat UGA more than UGA wanted/needed to FLA!

Six years is enough, nobody else give its coach that long. Chan must go!! Our last two national championships were won by Bobbys(Dodd and Ross). We are in need of a change. Instead of Paul Johnson @ Navy, how about Bobby Johnson of Vandy. When he was @ Furman there were in the 1-AA playoffs many times and held their own against likes of Ga Southern and Applachian State. He has done fine job with Vandy, all things considered. Think Jim Grobe @ Wake, and consider making a run @ Bobby Johnson.

Joe Colvin -
Have you even watched any of the Tech games the last 5 years? If so, you would have seen what is going on ON THE FIELD and why so many Tech fans want to can Chan.
Bottom line is his conservative offensive play calling and then his reliance on the defense (Tenuta) to save the game. If Chan ever gets any sort of lead (even 1 point) he immediately goes ultra-conservative on play calling. It is no secret when he runs up the middle 10 plays in a row.
A prime example is his 3 play-in-a-row, direct snap to Choice in the last game. Chan called offensive plays to ‘set up’ a field goal. Of course, the field goal was missed - and I don’t fault Bell at all. I fault Chan.
Chan still, after 6 years, doesn’t realize that these are not pro players, but are college kids. They play primarily on emotion. Heck, even today Chan says (in the ajc) that he doesn’t have to talk about the ugay game because everyone already knows how big it is. Chan just doesn’t consider pep talks at all. He just doesn’t get that these are kids and not pros.
Is he a ‘nice’ man? So I’ve been told.
Is he a ‘good’ pro coach? So I’ve been told.
Is he a ‘good’ college coach? No way!

Alright, I’ve heard enough complaining. Deuce - This guy is the pulse of the team, and he definitely helped us pull in the win this weekend. Can’t praise him enough. Brooks - Monster kick, I am so glad he is that good at his job. Bell - We really are lucky to have a guy this solid. Nesbitt - A passing touchdown and 50+ rushing hards. What else can we ask for? Bennett - Anyone who was in Jacksonville after New Years know what this guy is capable of and how well he can control a game. It’s because of him that we can play in the clutch. An improvement any Tech fan should be happy about. Defense - All these guys are doing, literally, a bang-up job. And I’m really excited about how Burnett is playing. Keep it up.
Anyone who did they’re homework should’ve known UNC wasn’t going to be a pushover. They came out and played hard. We pulled one out of the fire Saturday. That’s, honestly, something I wouldn’t have expected even from last year’s Costal championship team. This team is competitive, anywhere, against anybody. Now all that matters is getting ready for the boys from Athens.
Give em’ hell Tech!

If you thought the Carolina game was painful to watch, wait ‘til Saturday. IF Tech’s offense doesn’t turn the ball over AND if special teams play great, our D will keep us in it for a half…then it’s going to get ugly. If we’re LUCKY, Tech will only lose 35-10…if the breaks really go against us, it could be 55-7. At least this is Chan’s last game at Bobby Dodd Stadium!

Really? Just as an FYI for all my alumn and fans…it is not the academic acceptance standards of Tech that they go by to get a recruit to come to school, it’s the ACC which so happen to be the same as the NCAA requirements. It’s our lack of a diverse curriculum that make it difficult to attract the parents to our school since we all know “Momma” is the real person who decides where her baby goes.

I’m tired of any fan from any team (not just Tech) who says something like “we’re just x plays” or “were just y points” away from 9 or 10 wins.
Those are useless arguments. If you were 0-12 and lost every game against the top 12 teams by a field goal or less, you would still suck.
Now, that is said, go Jackets. Chan or no Chan, I want a W. Not an emotional victory. Not change in momentum. I want a win.

GT folks, this is the first and last time I will be over here on your blog. I went to it to see what the Tech folks were saying about this weekend with UGA. Let the game decide the outcome. I will say your coach may need to exit after this season if you expect to play with UGA year in and year out. I miss the days where it was more of a competitve rivalry. Not to say I want the Jim Donnan days back though, ha. Good luck.

Chris,
Your comment that “The athletes are held to an entirely different standard and have so much extra help available to them that they may as well not be attending the same school as the rest of the students.” should upset every athlete that has ever competed at the college level.
You don’t have a clue as to how many hours athletes spend working on their sport. It is equivalent to working full time while taking a full time class load. And, fatigue is a factor. There are many days when you are “dog” tired when you should be focusing on new material for a course.
Buddy, I earned my degree. No one gave it to me. And, I earned my Navy commission and the O6 Captain rank from a 27+ year career.
And, I earned my promotion to President of an autonomous division of a NYSE listed company. And I earned my promotion to Vice President of a major CNC machine tool global manufacturing company.
There is much more that I have accomplished during my career and two things have made it possible - (1) The excellent education that I worked my tail off for while at Tech and (2) The competition and teamwork experiences of participating on Tech’s football team during my time at Tech with a Head Coach that was a tremendous role model.
There is one current football player now working on his graduate degree. Jim Breland was working on his Master’s of Civil Engineering when he made All American as a center on Tech’s 1966 team.
You may remember Kim King. He was an outstanding student as well as outstanding quarterback and he certainly achieved much in his business career.
Bill Curry was also an outstanding student.
I think you owe all of the Tech athletes an apology for your careless and thoughtless comment.

The point is not the play calling during the UNC game. Chan is too conservative if he runs so he passes, we fumble on a sack. Chan is an idiot. The point is Chan can do no right and has no support among the paying GT fans at Grant Field.
D-Rad I can tell you from personal giving and giving in our group of long time season ticket holders Chan is costing you money in fund raising and football money makes the AD go round.
Ball is in your court because we are speaking by withholding funds. Not real impressed with GT Fund vs. AT Fund fiasco either.

The simple fact in sports (both football and basketball) is that for GT to be competitive with the powers (including UGA) we must have a GREAT quarterback(in football) or a GREAT point guard (in basketball). Those two positions are critical in college. Think back Tech fans; when have we had a really competitive team in either sport without that ingredient. Last year, we had arguably the greatest receiver in Tech history and we couldn’t pull it off. Without the Shawn Jones or the Joe Hamilton or the Jarrett Jack or the Stephon Marbury or the Kenny Anderson or the Travis Best we don’t compete because we can’t get enough great athletes into our school. Is either of this year’s quarterbacks that great one or is the freshman point guard the one? I don’t know, but that’s what it takes. We are not unique in this regard. Last week, you saw what happened to Oregon when they lost, Dixon, their great quarterback. All of a sudden, they were very ordinary. Mark my words, until Chan gets the great quarterback or Paul gets the great point guard (who is not one and done), we are going to be average, and that’s all.

My two cents are this. Fire Chan? Be careful what you wish for! Look at Notre Dame, and Ala. right now. Chan has had enough time at Tech to make an impact and you can’t honestly say he is a failure. I don’t like 7 win seasons either but to start over with a new guy right now dosen’t make sense. His recruiting the last couple yrs should get him a pass- at least for more season. Go Jackets!!!
