Three games in a row with same mistakes

There’s not much positive to draw upon after another lackluster game in the ACC. The 3-ball was working a little better and I thought we played better defensively in the open court (9 steals). We had far less turnovers (11) than in recent games, but those things don’t make up for some glaring deficiencies.

We have no offensive game plan and we give up too many easy buckets around the paint. Please tell me that someone on the Tech staff is working on these things. So far, three games in a row with the same mistakes.

On offense, it’s evident that we’re trying to post-up our big guys down low. However, the ball rarely gets to them. On the perimeter, Javaris dribbles and dribbles and can’t seem to find an open guy. Why is he dribbling so much? Why isn’t someone getting open? Also, I counted 4 times that the big guys (Dickey, Smith, Peacock) attempted 3-pointers. Why are they shooting from behind the arc?

Defensively, we have our breakdowns in the paint. In the open court we’re sound. We get lots of deflections and steals and generally disrupt the other team. Once they start penetrating towards the basket and drawing defenders, we get confused. Before you know it they pass to an open guy and it’s too late to recover.

Have we psyched ourselves out? Is this a chemistry issue (Clinch suspension)? Is it a lack of effort from the players? Is it a coaching problem? All of the above?

The good news is that we had a chance to beat VT despite the poor execution. The Wake game on Tuesday is a winnable road game and is a great opportunity chance to get out of this funk and get back some confidence.

It’s all of the above. This years team as turned into last year. Please forgove my english, i’m just venting, but it is pathetic. Some of these guys do not deserve to wear the uniform. I am glad to see that the names are no longer on the back of those jerseys. It is common sense mistakes, apparently the team an coaches have none.

yea: To think we got rid of Bobby Cremmins. Hewitt is no more than an average coach. If he had 10 McDonald all americans he would not win a road game. I think every other coach in the ACC has won at least one road game.

Hewitt is not an average coach. It’s very hard for a coach to send his point across when some of his players are lazy on the court and there’s a huge lack of chemistry that our final four team had. It’s not easy having a different team from year to year and when there’s no discipline among the players themselves, it’s even harder. A coach can only do so much, after that it’s up to the players, these guys are adults and need to understand that its their responsibility to represent the school and play to the best of their abilities. They aren’t doing that and that’s why we’re losing. The fact that we’re winning any games is thanks to Hewitt, he’s better than average and can turn this team around.

I agree, hewit is a great coach, but the turnovers this year are killing us!! We need a classic passing point guard , and move jarvis to the 2 spot.

My only complaint with Coach Hewitt is that he is too infatuated with recruiting “long and athletic” guys. A good team needs at least a couple of guys who know how to play the game regardless of their physical characteristics. There is a difference between an “athlete” nd a “basketball player.”

I watched the Dawg game yesterday and the non-stop “big baby” comments for Glen Davis. I then turned the station to watch the GT game and saw Hewitt whining (AGAIN) about a call. I think the big baby name needs to be transferred to Hewitt because it seems every single game I watch he is crying to the refs about something. Maybe if he’d actually take some time and coach y’all would win a couple games.

Hewitt is NOT a great coach. He has enough games under his belt that his record is what it is. Period. He is not a bad coach, but certainly not great. He has shown a consistent lack of ability to create an offensive personality, and this year his children don’t want to play defense. Remember, this is the guy who figured out a way to have a losing record with Chris Bosh (a top three lottery pick and a first team NBA all-star). There is plenty of blame to go around, but Hewitt certainly shares in it. His record speaks for itself. Ask yourself if any coach of any team in the top 20 could achieve more with this same team. I think the answer is obvious, but I am just one fan.

Hewitt, not Tech, is overrated. What happened to his staff? Do these guys know what the heck is their doing? Offensively, they are so mechanical. Why doesn’t Hewitt just teach them the UNC/DUKE freelance offense, the press, and let them run. Hey Hewett, get ready, your seat is about to get very HOT!!!!

I have to agree with some of you and say that hewitt isnt doing the job again this year. This is not the same team that we saw in Hawaii. All you want from a young team is progression, and you are seeing the opposite. NIT at best for this team. And for those GA crapping on us. You guys make me laugh, you have a sniff of what basketball is and all of a sudden you talk, amazing. Just keep living in 1980.

Hey TechIsGay-ley, get a life and stop posting lame comments with no point. Funny how this Tech team still beat your mutt team. Who’s laughing now?!

Anyway, something needs to be done because there are too many things not clicking. I have to agree with you Andy. Why aren’t they passing more? Why in the heck are the big guys shooting 3’s? And why are they not scoring in the paint? Are the guys unmotivated or not prepared? They need to play as a team and improve on several basic things. Come on, they are so much better than they are showing.

Hewitt is a great recruiter, but a horrid X’s & O’s coach. There has not been a single adjustment made in the last month with this team. Their interior defense is as lax as brain cells in a U[sic]GA fan. I have never seen the opposing team take such high % shots. The ratio of our high % shots taken to opponents high % shots has to be the lowest in the NCAA. I agree, I think the hot seat needs to be turned up a bit on Hewitt.

My only complaint for Coach H is that he’s changed from his philosophy of playing 10 guys and pressing constantly. He won with a much inferior squad using that approach, lost with Chris Bosh doing it this way. Go back to your roots Coach. That and our centers were a complete non-factor, infact they were liabilities, yesterday.

Hi you Tech guys, I’m a dawg and I’m not on your blog to cause you a problem. 1st., I do think Felton is doing a great job of pulling the Dawgs out of the Herrick hole. I remember we were 8-20 two years ago . Now, my point is will he be able to takt us to the top? Some coaches can pull a team together and make it up the ladder but DO THEY KNOW HOW TO HANDLE SUCESS? That’s my question about Hewitt. I think Rags makes a couple of valid points and those are the same questions for felton. You’ve been to the top and we haven’t so 1st we have to get there.

With about 14 minutes left in the game we started a stretch where we actually TRIED playing defense for a change. We go a couple of shot clock violation calls and a five second call. Unfortunately, on the offensive end we HAD FOUR GUYS STANDING AROUND WITH ONE GUY DRIBBLING. Interior passes and dribble-drive penetrations were non-existent. With no offense, we were not able to catch up to VT.

With about 7 minutes left we gave up on defense as well and watched VT get 3 or 4 consecutive dunks. I turned off the TV when the point guard drove all the way down the lane untouched and dunked on our entire defense.

II hate to sound bitter and angry, but either some players need to be benched (or better yet have their scholarships revoked at the end of the season) or the coaching staff needs to go. This team is in need of a major overhaul. I would feel differently if we were losing for different reasons each week. But we lose for the SAME REASONS EVERY WEEK.

  1. No movement on offense.
  2. No movement on defense.
  3. No inbounds plays to speak of.
  4. Only one three-point shooter and we don’t set screens for him like we should. Morrow started out having a great second half, but his three-point shooting disappeared during the last 10 minutes of the game.

To make matters worse, we aren’t showing improvement in any of these areas. When you continue to struggle with the same things you have to point your finger at the head coach. Felton has UGA headed in the right direction; Hewitt continues to look perplexed during games. If he has no clue as to how to fix this mess, then we need to hire someone who can.

I think the loss of Lewis Clinch is turning out to be a bigger loss than most people thought. He was a pure shooter similar to BJ Elder. That is what this team is missing. When we have 5 guys on the floor with Faye, Javaris, Smith, Dickey, and West, That leaves us two guys who can straight shoot the ball and only one with consistency. We need shooters or we need to get Morrow the ball.

By Jeff

January 29, 2007 1:21 PM | Link to this

Would Tech fans rather lose to UGA and make the NCAA’s or beat UGA and fall apart like they have?

I didn’t think the game meant as much in basketball and the season was deemed a success on where the teams go after the conference tournaments.

By UGAG SUX

January 29, 2007 1:31 PM | Link to this

UGAG SUX, real mature! Yes, I am a Dawg but I am not on here to gloat..I am a sport fan. I think the reason the Jackets are struggling is because Crittendon is a bit overwhelmed and probably a little overrated. He is NOT Marbury, Anderson, etc. Also, I do think that Hewitt needs to work more on fundamentals with the team. There is way too much standing around on offense.

By Dante21

January 29, 2007 1:33 PM | Link to this

Like I’ve posted before, forget about this year. It’s OVER! We’ll win no more than 1 in the NIT. The key for the team now is to learn as much as possible about life in the ACC, get Clinck back in good standing, and hope attrition is minimal

By David

January 29, 2007 1:51 PM | Link to this

Guys Crit is a Fr. Does anyone remember Jarrett Jack his Fr season? It wasn’t that good either. Very inconsistent just like Crit. The people who should be getting the blame on this team are Dickey and Smith. Both are turnovers waiting to happen and Dickey can’t play defense to save his life.

By HEWITT'S GOT TO GO

January 29, 2007 2:13 PM | Link to this

Most of this is Hewitt’s fault. He can’t teach fundamentals because he doesn’t understand the game and fundamentals on his own. We give up more layups than any team in the country and play no defense. As far as guys being freshman. Crit was ranked well ahead of North Carolina’s freshmen and they still out play him. The coach does not motivate so the players are not motivated in practice and it shows in the games. Hewitt doesn’t understand the basics of the game (press, timeouts, etc.). We need a new coach.

I’m sorry people, but Hewitt is NOT a great coach. He’s no doubt a great guy & has the right image for Tech, but the same mistakes keep being made each year. Here’s a shocking stat! Since he’s been with Georgia Tech, Paul Hewitt’s has only been above .500 in the ACC once, 2004 (9-7). Granted, the ACC has always been one of the best conferences in basketball, but come on. Now, look at Tech this season. 2-5 in the ACC and winless in true road games. And let’s not forget everyone, the road woes were a problem in 2004 too, but because the team got on a roll, everyone thinks Hewitt’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Those of you who watched the last three games have to admit, he was hanging his head quite a bit on the sidelines. A great coach doesn’t hang his head, but rather picks the team up and coaches them. They’re young & show glimpses of talent, but they need to be molded, which is what a great coach is supposed to do!

By JohnGTFan

January 29, 2007 3:24 PM | Link to this

This is a pretty simple fix. I didn’t think I would be saying this 2 years ago, but it’s time for Hewitt to go. He’s gotten great talent this year, and done nothing with it. He doesn’t motivate his kids at all. They show little emotion…it’s time to say good-bye. And Wake is not a “winnable road game”…no such thing for GT this year

By Ramble ON!

January 29, 2007 3:26 PM | Link to this

HEY BUCK, I hope it’s gotten warmer up/over there. I’d give Hewitt up in a heart beat for Felton. He’s a much better coach all round. Hell, Hewitt can’t coach. I don’t think the players respect him enough, that’s why they quit last year, and probably will again with about 4 minutes to go this Tuesday @ Wake.

Unfortunately , I am a parent of a player on GT , and i have read all the comments. I think that most of the comments are way too nice. Something is going on , and i believe it starts with the coach. I remember when the coach was recruting my son; i could not believe that he showed up so many times and still was coaching GT. I never see the assistants do or say much of any thing on the bench. They must have a gag order.I personally think it is time to send the coach packing, because i think some one else can at least win the games they are supposed to win…

By GT Fan Jeff

The current state of the GT mens basketball program is probably the result of ONE of the following:

(1) Every team GT has played the past three games is apparently MUCH BETTER than they were rated. (2) GT is apparently MUCH WORSE than they were rated. (3) Paul Hewitt is doing a poor coaching job.

I vote for number 3, but what do I know, right?

I never post on these blogs, but - regarding the comment from Confused Father: This presents two potential problems. The first problem is if this father is correct. The second problem is, here you have a player’s parent who is not happy and is probably passing that feeling on to his son and maybe other players. How helpful can that be? That sounds like Zam Frederick all over again, and we know what his attitude did to last year’s team..

By MS

January 30, 2007 12:47 PM | Link to this

A few observations:

We miss Clinch’s ability to SHOOT, because he opens up the defense. When Morrow is out, everything packs into the lane. I dont understand why there is no adjustment made to the lineup. You have to put JCrit at the two and let West run the point, not the reverse. When Morrow is out of the game, they are doubling Crit at the point because we have no other shooters at guard. Let West have the option to drive the lane and leave Crit out for the kickout pass. Its the loss of Clinch that is slowing Crits development, because his passing options are reduced.

Faye’s 17 points (mostly inside the paint) last game notwithstanding, he cant be asked to cover a guard, because he doesnt have the lateral mobility to do so. Im tired of watching guards blow thru the lane and set up dunks. Faye needs to spell TY at the three, not start.

As much as I like Smiths court presence, you cant play a guy down low if he doesnt hit his foul shots. Luke may not have been the most athletic guy, but when he got hacked, he made em pay at the line. Unless Smith can do the same, his minutes need to be reduced and play Dickey and Peacock together more.

I dont think Hewitt is a bad coach, but its hard to understand the combos he is using right now, and the lack of adjustments to what is NOT working.

And to the Confused Dad — this is not an appropriate place for you to be venting. You are not helping anyone by expressing your opinions here (if you are who you say you are). I would imagine you have the ability to talk to coach directly. Go do it if you have something to say.

Don’t see the character of 2002 team that started 0-7, lost Bosh and Nelson, then finished 2nd nationally in 2004.Hewitt can coach, but he is doing a poor job.By his own pre-season admission, he loved this team. 2-6 is on him this year.

It’s interesting that T. Young’s father said several times during the recruiting process that his boy was going to play for a black coach. He left a town (Memphis) that has a coach that knows what he is doing during games and would have gotten more out of him. Tech even got another from Memphis. Don’t count on any more with Hewitt.
