Defense key in the ACC

This might sound like a broken record, but if Tech is going to win a few of these upcoming ACC games (Clemson, Duke, FSU, UNC, Maryland), we will need some mighty fine defense… and a win on the road.

It does appear that the defensive pieces are coming together: the press is more effective, Mouhammed Faye and D’Andre Bell have stepped up, we’re forcing lots of turnovers, we’re scooping up loose balls, and we’re out-rebounding teams big time. But, we’ve dominated the weakest part of our schedule and now we’re starting the toughest.

We get to play five teams in 19 days with combined records of 67 – 7. Absolutely brutal. I don’t want to be accused of setting a low standard, but I think winning three out of five would be okay. In case you haven’t noticed, the ACC is tougher than ever.

We’ll do worse than that if we can’t find a way to win on the road. If we can beat Clemson this Saturday, I think the curse will be broken and we’ll start to win more and more road games. If just takes the one game to change the mindset.

I’m hoping that this is the stretch when we start to turn some heads in the conference. It will all start with defense and that first road win.

Sorry guys - I know the topic Andy laid out for today is basketball, but I wanted to comment on the Darryl Richard situation. I am truly angered that this is even requiring any type of deliberation by our fine university. FIND THE KID A SPOT IN OUR MBA PROGRAM.

Here we have a young man that will graduate in three years. He has done this while playing major college football AND while recovering from a serious knee injury. I just recently heard of a kid (not a college athlete mind you, just a student) with a similar injury to what Richard had. His doctor advised him to take the next semester off following his surgery because of the complications he would have getting back and forth to class. We forget that it is not just Richard’s football career that was impacted with the injury; his class work was as well.

Richard, on the surface, really appears to be a unique individual. Isn’t this the type of football player we say we want? Now we aren’t going to take care of him? If we can’t find a spot for a young man like this in our MBA program, then we don’t deserve special young men like him.

Can you imagine what UGA would do for one of their stud football players that actually earned a degree? I guarantee you they would do everything in their power to help the young man further his academic career. We, it appears, are hoping the NCAA committee will change its rules so that Richard can’t transfer to another school. This is truly pathetic.

I totally agree with 91wreck, and I will go further in saying this combined with ineligibility of the football players and possibly a basketball player brings into serious question the systems in place to make sure these athletes are students as well. Time for the president and the AD to take a hard look at the effectiveness of that system and what changes may needed.

By the way, need a big win in Clemson, time for the team to show its metal against worthy competition.

What’s the good word?

I am in agreement with these guys. GT should be bending over backwards to accomadate such a star example of academic and athletic excellence. I mean Reggie Ball as a senior, can’t pass all his classes, and even if he had would still not be scheduled to graduate until next December according to what I read in the AJC before his failed class. Shouldn’t GT be giddy to let people know they have more positive stories than negative ones? As for the MBA program admittance, it is my understanding that these programs like to have a diverse group of students in the program to add to the education and experience for those involved. What’s more diverse than a college football player who can play football, recover from and injury and still graduate from a bachelor’s program in 3 years? I bet they’ve never had anybody like him. Sports is a big business and his experience would be a unique perspective to an MBA program. If Richard is not still playing football for GT this fall, shame on GT.

My post is regarding football….

Here is the conference ranking based on bowl records since 2001.

WAC - 14 wins, 8 losses Big East - 13 wins, 9 losses SEC - 29 wins, 21 losses ACC - 28 wins, 21 losses MAC - 8 wins, 6 losses MWC - 13 wins, 11 losses PAC 10 - 20 wins, 20 losses Big 12 - 25 wins, 30 losses Big 10 - 20 wins, 26 losses C-USA - 8 wins, 17 losses Sun Belt - 3 wins, 7 losses Notre Dame - 0 wins, 5 losses

Clearly, the “good” major conferences are the SEC, ACC, and Big East.

Clearly, the “bad” major conferences are the PAC 10, Big 10, and Big 12, and Notre Dame.

When are the idiotic poll voters going to stop voting for the “bad” teams. Heck, Boise State clearly deserved more votes than those teams.

Why isn’t this data and news in the sports media now? Why are they hiding and protecting these “bad” conferences and Notre Dame?

I am sick of ESPN and ABC and others always talking about how great Big 10 football is, how great Notre Dame is, and so on. Where is the proof?

Big East went 4-0 in bowls this year. Why aren’t they being heralded as the best?

JustMe - it’s 110% about money, not about who’s best or most deserving. Pathetic? Yes. College football is corrupt, because of all of the money lining some people’s pockets. I personally think we should abandon football, as there is too much corruption and it distracts from what’s really important in school.

Example: Notre Dame - I saw a story on them recently saying that ND has lost 100% of its last 16 games against top 10 opponents. It has lost the last 9 bowl games it’s gone to. Why? Because bowls invite teams who will draw money, not teams which are most deserving…….thus ND keeps getting invited to bigger bowls than it “deserves” and gets it’s butt handed to it against a team much better. Unless there is an NCAA sanctioned playoff system, there will never be a fair playing ground. Even then, there will be corruption, because there is simply too much money to be stolen.

If you cannot find Darryl Richard a spot in our MBA program then don’t ever ask me for dime again. We need to take care of our own, particularly Academic All Americans. Say hello to my little friend!

Hey please read the question, it’s a basketball question! Tech’s defense is almost non-existent. If they win, it will be because the players are better physical specimens, and run the other teams out of breath. The little consistently at shooting (Lewis Clinch) will be lost for this season (if not forever). It is interesting how Hewitt handled Clinch’s problems, as he reduced the playing time to almost nothing. Gailey did just opposite with his failing players, by using them to the maximum, until the school took them away. Two different approaches to the student athletes.

Does anyone on the inside know what Clinch did to get suspended for the year? AND, did Hewitt know this was coming and that’s why Clinch’s playing time went down to virtually nothing the last few games?

ok for all you techmites in the great acc conference, the final rankings(sec) 5 teams, 3 in the top 9, (acc) 3 teams, no team in the top 10. in bowl games florida defeated #1 ohio st, lsu defeated #11 notre dame, georgia defeated #12 va. tech, and auburn defeated #18 nebraska, nobody in the acc defeated a ranked team. head to head matchups sec 8 wins, acc 1, so just keep wishing you were in a real conference. GO DAWGS AND GO SEC OH BUT YOU ARE A BASKETBALL CONFERENCE, BUT THE SEC HAS THAT NATIONAL CHAMPION TOO,
