How many bids for the ACC?

ACC coaches were none too pleased last year when only four teams made the NCAA Tournament. They pointed out, among other things, that the ACC had the highest RPI of any conference.

With Selection Sunday just over three weeks away, the league is poised to land seven teams in the tourney, just like it did in 2007. The ACC is less top-heavy than it was last year.

In its latest projection, Bracketology 101 — the blog that picked 64 of 65 teams in last year’s field and seeded 40 teams exactly — predicted the ACC would get seven bids and the Big East, eight. UNC, Duke, Clemson, Wake Forest, FSU, Boston College and Virginia Tech are in; Miami and Maryland are out.

Other indicators also are strong. USA Today’s Jeff Sagarin ratings peg the ACC as the top conference, ahead of the Big 10 and Big East.

The official RPI on the NCAA’s site has five ACC teams in the top 20: North Carolina (4), Duke (5), Clemson (10), Wake Forest (16) and FSU (20).

Then there’s Miami (47), Virginia Tech (49), Boston College (51) and Maryland (61). In case you’re wondering, Georgia Tech has an RPI of 167. No other ACC team is in triple digits.

So, barring a major surprise in the ACC Tournament, how many bids do you think the ACC deserves? How many do you think it will get?

Only two are going far….Dook and UNC. Others will leave quickly.

dook will flame out in the first round. Carolina’s soft defense will keep them from the Final Four. Wake is too schizophrenic to predict whether the team that beat UNC & dook will show or the one that lost to Miami and GT.

167 RPI…….how pitiful can you get. Flat out embarrassment to GT fans! Disgraceful, pathetic, mind boggling, sickening, humiliating, mortifying, miserable, contemptibly inadequate, dishonorable, defaming………anything else I missed describing our “coach”/president of the BCA???

I think Clemson is a talented, well-coached team. I predict they will go down in a regional final. I predict a UConn/UNC final, with UConn winning. Duke and Wake will be the only others that have a chance at the Sweet 16, depending on the matchups.

I think 7 teams from the ACC is wishful thinking. I see only 6. The ones mentioned above minus VT. That UVA loss by 14 points will hurt VT big time. VT is a bubble team and will only make it with 2 wins in the ACC tourney. Miami is a solid team at times too but should have a losing ACC record which will mean no NCAA for them.

If teh ACC wants 7 teams UNC and Duke are going to have to lose some more games to bubble teams.

I remember once upon a time, when this time of the year was meant for trying to improve the seeding for the ACC AND the NCAA tourney.

My, how things have changed, now we just watch the others.

I thing’s for sure there will be no bids for Tickle Pile attendance. Because of the poor performance of our Basketball team and this crazy weather there is simply no enthusiasm for a Pile but don’t worry, spring is on the way.

Only 4 teams are worthy, UNC, Duke, Wake and Clemson. If BC, Miami and FSU make it, it will be to make up for only 4 getting in last year.

Unless a tornado rolls through the Dome again, GT basketball 2008/2009 will go out with a whimper, our worst showing since the Duane Morrison version first entered the ACC. Sad.

Oh, and ignore Yellowstain.

Born2Buzz, I think you are correct that the 4 you mentioned are the most worthy ones to get in. Maybe FSU and BC, but Va. Tech getting waxed at VA. was a severe blow to them.I like the Dookies, but that bunch looks like a “one and done” to me.(No inside game). Carolina is probably the only one that will go very far as Clemson and Wake both can get in a “funk” at times. Some might wonder why I am on here, but ACC roundball is way ahead of the SEC, and usually is most years, and I enjoy watching mostly good teams play. I have tried to watch the Jackets some, but that is painful to do this year. They seem to be too talented to be floundering as they are. I might add, what a shame that the two major universities of this state are in such bad shape. However, I think the future is somewhat brighter for Tech based on what talent is coming in. And Yellowblood, go away! Your “schtick” is pathetic!

I’ll venture a guess and say that the ACC won’t get enough bids to include the team who is the subject of this blog.

Who cares!!!??? I have no interest in the NCAA’s when Tech is not involved and, believe me, Tech IS NOT INVOLVED!!!

I suspect that UNC can play lock-down defense if they ever have to. If you watch them enough then you have seen them play tough “D.” They are extremely talented and athletic. I believe some fans, particularly those who, should I say, are slightly jealous, are only wistling in the dark when talking about UNC’s “weak defense”.

Seven schools have figured out how to have a good basketball team, two others are ACC quality and then there is Tech. The team next year will have too much pressure on it to be so young, no team could be this bad but next year’s won’t be the answer. It will take some doing to get interest back up for the sport particularly with football looking like it has promise. I truly believe the glory days of Tech basketball are over. Cold nights in a hot Alexander with the eyes of the nation tuned in the band cranked up, is right up there with the Braves in sports memory. That Georgia game in football cures a lot of hurt in basketball. If we can only have one real team, let it be football.
