2010 football schedule
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Athletics director Dan Radakovich and senior associate athletics director Paul Griffin have gotten into the thick of finding a 12th opponent for the 2010 and 2011 seasons to replace Ole Miss, which pushed the series back to 2019-2020. (I hear Tech has the early edge on a fifth-grader out of Dunwoody with off-the-charts measurables who should give the Jackets a decided edge in those games.)
Larry talked to Radakovich recently. This is what he (Radakovich, not Larry) had to say:
“People will be a little more ready to talk about 10 and 11” now that all the 2009 schedules have been finalized. “We want to make sure to pull this together in a home-and-home circumstance.”
“We’re going to do it as fast as we can. We’re scouring the landscape….Now that the other schedules have been pulled together, it will move up the food chain to, ‘Let’s get this thing done.’”
Most notably, Tech wants to find a BCS team to replace Ole Miss and the school is apparently talking with several schools. I poked around cfbpalace.net, a site devoted to future schedules. It is not the final word - so take things with a grain of salt - but looks fairly authoritative.
In a story Larry wrote during the last football season, Radakovich said his order of preference for its three out of conference games (besides Georgia) are:
1) a nearby SEC team, or a Big East team;
2) a Division I-A team from a non-BCS conference;
3) a Division I-AA team.
Looking at 2010-2011, Tech already has 2) and 3) taken care of with games against Middle Tennessee State (both years) and South Carolina State (2010) and Western Carolina (2011 and, notably, Paul Johnson’s alma mater).
That leaves 1). Larry’s story mentions that Tech at that point was trying to re-schedule a delayed series with Louisville. That, and the schedules of other schools in the Big East and the SEC, leads me to think it would be Tech’s most preferred - and perhaps most likely - opponent.
In the Big East, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and West Virginia need games, according to fbcpalace.net.
In the SEC, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee still have openings.
Rutgers would seem like a logical choice, but the Scarlet Knights are apparently looking for a I-AA opponent. Tech is already playing Syracuse 2015 and 2016. UConn and Tech fairly recently finished a series. If Tech is playing the Big East to get in front of alumni, West Virginia doesn’t seem like a great fit.
That leaves Cincinnati, Louisville and Pittsburgh.
In the SEC, Tech plays Alabama 2013 and 2014. Arkansas would seem to be too far. Kentucky looks like it generally plays Louisville and a combination of non-BCS and I-AA teams. LSU already has West Virginia on for 2010 and 2011 and its scheduling pattern doesn’t suggest it wants to add a BCS team. Same for Tennessee, which has Oregon in 2010 and North Carolina in 2011.
It’s possible Tech is looking beyond the SEC and Big East, but it seems like that’s Radakovich’s strong preference. Scheduling a Pac-10 or Big Ten team would create an intriguing matchup, but it wouldn’t do much for Tech at the gate.
Who would you want to see Tech play? Do you have a preference among Cincinnati, Louisville and Pittsburgh?

Go into the heart of Texas. We have had some great recruiting there in recent years and it would be a good chance to get in front of some other potential recruits.

**Would love to see Tech play Tennessee. Some of the greatest SEC games in history were between Tech and Tennessee. Of course the best thing, regardless of which team we pick up, is that Chan Gailey, the worst coach in the history of the world, will NOT be coaching in it. Halllleeeeedamlooooyah!! Thank God and Greyhound that he is gone….FOREVER!!!!

Rutgers: Look no further. And gt could get that revenge by going after LSU for a home-and-home (of course, Atlanta occasionally seems like home to LSU).

Personally I would like to see Tech play LSU because my fiance roots for them and I would like to get a little payback. Otherwise I say some national team that would be worth visiting like Nebraska, Texas, Southern Cal, Ohio State …
Among the 3 mentioned I would say Louisville.

If Tech has another good season in 2009 and finishes in the top 15 then a more national game against another top program could bring big exposure to Ga Tech and the ACC. A few years ago we saw the Jackets win at Notre Dame, and it was a great sight. I’d like to see us celebrate at Michigan, Penn St, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Ucla and to have a team like one of these in our stadium. I totally disagree that playing a Big Ten team wouldn’t do much for Tech at the gate. Big Ten fans travel in huge numbers, and there are a lot of them in the Atlanta area.

There are tons of Michigan and Ohio State alum in Atlanta, plus those schools would make for a good national audience. Limiting the geography is good for recruiting, however, national TV coverage is GREAT for recruiting. Also agree with another poster that Texas, Tx A&M or TT would make for a good one, especially considering that the state of Texas seems to be our next biggest state for recruits outside of SEC/ACC states. UF doesnt appear to line up for the immediate void, but they would be great to add in somewhere down the line. UCF and S. Fla would also be good ones.

Louisville is the best choice of the three, but an SEC team would be even better. The one thing we absolutely CAN NOT do is schedule another minor D-1A or a D-1AA school. One whipping boy breather a year is more than enough. If CPJ and Tech are going “to the next level” of competition, it starts with scheduling better opponents. The ACC conference schedule is going to be inconsistently and unpredictably strong/weak each year, so our out of conference opponents need to be reputable if we want recognition and program credibility, even if we lose a few to some good schools.

if we really want to get into the national picture then we must sked teams from other parts of the country to get votes in the polls, thats why florida has a tuff time getting votes ouotside the south because they refuse too travel outside the southeastern part of the country.

I would love to play Penn State a home and home but I don’t see that happening. If Bama doesn’t mind playing us 2 years (2010 & 2011) taking a year off and playing 2 more years that would work fine. It would be great to pick up a pretty big name (or even a big name) and schedule them at home opposite the years we play Ugag and Clemmons. We did have Miami and FSU at home this year but we won’t see the ‘noles in Hotlanta for another 6 years or so and our 3 biggest games (Ugag, Clemmons, VaTech) are all at home or all away the same year. If we could get either Clemmons or VaTech switched (won’t happen) that would better balance our schedule. Some might even throw UNC and Butch Davis into that pot and they fall on the schedule the same as the other 3. Of the 3 choices listed above I would take Louisville from a travel stand-point but take Pitt if I was trying to get more exposure in the NE.

I really would like the idea to get some good exposure in texas or oklahoma playing one pass and offensive heavy teams such as Tex, Tex-tech, Ok, or maybe even go with a team like Missouri. I really don’t know why we would push the Louisville game though I don’t see much coming from that at all. If anything schedule South Carolina, or Tennessee that way it keeps it in the south against a quality opponent where the fans can still travel. Go Jackets

Interesting thoughts. where have you been, m? we’ve missed your chan gailey/greyhound rants.
That said, while Tennessee might make for a good game, I don’t see Tennessee going for it. Same with Rutgers.
Going into Texas is interesting, as Tech has a small contingent of Texans on the roster, which allows me a convenient opportunity to plug a story about recruit Jeremy Moore from Austin. According to the site, Texas and Texas Tech are both full for 2010-11. A&M needs a 12th game.
Michigan is playing Notre Dame, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Delaware State in 2009. That should give you some indication of what they’re trying to do out of conference. Ohio State is full in 2010.

Of course the dawg fans miss him…they just don’t realize how much they are going to miss him in long term. Tech fans keep talking about national exposure, but it seems that Radakovich’s biggest concern is simply getting butts in the seats. You can’t run before you walk Tech fans. Start filling up your stadium and traveling better and then Radakovich can start thinking about national exposure. Until then, expect more crappy out of conference matchups against SEC bottom dwellers, the Big East, and D-1aa’s. Put your money where your mouth is and show “D-Rad” the money Tech fans.

I think the sentence that reads “In a story Larry wrote …” lets most people know that he is talking about a fellow AJC writer. Plus, this is an informal blog, not an article that will be printed in the newspaper. Lighten up.
Ken, thanks for your efforts to keep us informed, even with stuff like this that doesn’t necessarily warrent an actual newspaper article, yet. Speculation like this is something you could never get away with in a published newspaper article, but it is perfect for a blog like this. And most of us appreciate it, even while realizing it is only speculation.

Absolutely no BIG EAST schools. Nothing wrong with going to Texas. Texas A&M seems like a good fit. Back in teh 60’s and 70’s Tech played Texas Tech, A&M, Baylor, the like. Not all good Texas high school kids are going to go to Texas schools. Chris Bosh was from the Dallas area.

Play ANYBODY with a big name. Who are fans more likely to show up for USC or Louisville? A team from the Big Least? Didn’t all the good teams from the Big East come to the ACC? Sometimes you have to ignore the immediate economic impact of having to pay for travel and invest in the future. We don’t need more mediocre teams on the schedule, we play in the ACC!!!! Beef up the schedule and therefore our reputation, assuming that is that we will continue to improve. I’m feeling optamistic, schedule someone big time.

I’d love to see Tech play a Big 12 team like Texas or Oklahoma. A rematch series vs LSU would be pretty cool, as well as a series against Alabama. (Things to consider: Paul Jonson - Nick Saban becoming the new Bobby Dodd - Bear Bryant.)
DRad needs to consider looking further west for some strong OOC games. A game versus a Pac-10 team would be mighty appetizing.

thanks, bb. I would have provided Larry Hartstein’s full name, but, seeing as a) he generally updates the blog, ; b) as bb pointed out, this is a more informal space, I didn’t find it necessary. I figure most readers of the blog know who Larry is.
As Larry’s article pointed out, one reason for scheduling the Big East is so that Tech can play in front of some of its alumni along the East Coast. I’m not sure exactly how many alumni are in the Louisville area, but I suppose there are other reasons for playing the Cardinals. It’s a drivable distance (about 6.5 hours, I think, according to Google maps).
I’m wondering, though - how much value is there in playing a big-time opponent? Would that many more fans pay to watch Texas than Louisville? It seems like the gain would be marginal. (50,000 vs. 55,000)
Obviously, if Tech were to beat a team like Texas, it would help immediately with rankings. But you also take on a greater risk of losing.
For instance, I’m sure UVA fans were fired up about bringing USC to town, but maybe not so much afterwards.
On the flipside, Alabama used its win over Clemson last year to set the stage for its almost SEC title.
But what some of you are hoping the game(s) will do - to help legitimize Tech nationally - is a different matter.
Can you think of a team about which you can say - I didn’t know much about Team A until it brought in (Texas/Michigan/USC), beat them and now they’re nationally recognized. I just wonder if it would deliver the impact you think it might. Or maybe I’m misinterpreting what you’re saying.
(Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything. Just playing devil’s advocate.)

Kentucky schedules absurdly weak. They would benefit from playing a program like Tech.
Frank Broyles is a Tech graduate. You’d think they could put something together out there with the Broyles hook up.

It is with pleasure I announce that M is a fool, and Guthrie from Griffin is as well.
Pile of journalism? That’s grownup, you faceless twirp. Use your name.
Guthrie, you DA, you’re not reading an “article.” You are reading a blog. It’s a new-age thingie, been around five or six years. Shame on any sane person for thinking you might know that.
You’re on the Georgia Tech site at the AJC, where the beat writers are Ken and Larry Hartstein.
If you happen to be a first-time visitor to the site, there is nonetheless enough signage for any fool to figure out this is a blog. That would indicate to any reasonably acclimated reader that the in the event of a first-name reference like the one Ken used, the person referenced is probably a regular in some fashion on this very site. Then with a minimum of research, you could figure out Larry,
Apparently, you did that so kudos to you big boy.

If you want SEC, pick UT, Auburn, Alabama. All those schools want to play in GA so they can get in front of the recruiting pool. If they win the game, they win the recruits, so it is a gamble on our part. However, if we win it will shut up any critics. Picking solid unknown teams is a no win situation.

I say that we play Central Florida. Where ever we play a home and home, it should be a market that will get us recruiting exposure, and have a chance of selling out! O’Leary has a new stadium on campus, gaining great interest in the area, and it is a great area for Tech to recruit. Of the 3 mentioned, Cincinnati makes the most sense for the same reasons, although Tech has gotten some great players out of both Pitt and Louisville in the past (i.e. Willie Clay). We need to play out of conference schedules that rival the North Carolina schools in our conference: W&M, Richmond, J. Madison, etc.) Tired of this N.C. based conference letting them slide on everything!

The last time I checked the number of yards the defense gives up are not what constitutes victory in a football game, there has been a alot of teams that have given up 409 yards and still won.Unfortunately we were not one of them that day. 42-45 it was a fluke.

Jeremy (above) is correct. Gotta be close for the traveling fans. Particularly those who drive.
While the potential match-up would be great for TV and/or tradition by playing teams BEYOND reasonable driving distance, it is otherwise counter to what D Rad has been saying regarding the out of conf. home-and-home games.
To be finacially productive for both schools, and attractive to the Tech fan base it has to be a game that is doable for the non-flying fans.
IMO … Louisville is about as far as you’d want to go…6 hours in the car. Therefore, UT, SC, KY, FLA, C-FLA., East Caro., So.Miss. could be very attractive match-ups.
