More on the 2009 football schedule

Good morning…

Ken Sugiura looked into the confusion that arose Thursday morning as various websites’ versions of the schedule seemed to present conflicts. He compiled this note:

Some websites had Mississippi State playing Georgia Tech in Starkville Sept. 19, even though the ACC and Tech released schedules that had the Jackets playing Miami two days prior.

I talked to the ACC’s associate commissioner for football, Michael Kelly, about it. This is how I understand what happened.

Tech and Mississippi State had originally contracted to play Sept. 19. However, as the schedule began to be put together, ESPN requested that Miami and Tech play in a Thursday night game Sept. 17. To do that, obviously, Tech, Mississippi State and their respective leagues had to be willing to move the date of the MSU-Tech game.

To make that happen, the Tech-Mississippi State game was moved to Oct. 3, which evidently was the date that the SEC had scheduled MSU to play Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt-MSU was then switched into the Sept. 19 slot. But Vanderbilt was supposed to play Ole Miss on that date, so Ole Miss-Vandy was moved to Oct. 3. Here is a mention of it on Vandy’s website.

I hope that makes sense. Basically, ESPN wanted Tech-Miami in Week 3, and the SEC and ACC (the SEC, mostly) moved games around to make it happen.

Kelly explained on the ACC’s website how he and the league put together the schedule.

Overall, Tech’s schedule looks tougher than last year’s. Instead of Gardner-Webb and Boston College, Tech is playing Wake Forest and Vanderbilt. Instead of two off weeks, there is one.

Last year’s schedule broke right for Tech. When Josh Nesbitt pulled a hamstring against Mississippi State, the Jackets had an off week, then Duke and Gardner-Webb. Nesbitt returned in time for the win at Clemson.

Later, after Tech looked worn down in a loss at North Carolina, the Jackets had 12 days to prepare for Miami. They came out fresh and energized and won big on national TV. Then they had nine days to prepare for Georgia. The Bulldogs had a full two weeks, but we all know what happened.

This year, Tech’s only off week comes before Georgia, while the Bulldogs play Kentucky the week prior.

So, what was your first reaction when you saw the 2009 schedule?

LOOKS LIKE WE GOT THE RIGHT ONES AT HOME AND

AWAY GAMES ARE OK EXCEPT FSU AT TALLAHASSEE-CAN’T HELP THAT!

LOOKS LIKE A GOOD SETUP FOR 2009!!

October is going to be pretty tough. We will know where we stand in the ACC by the end of it though. Atleast its not front heavy like last years. Gives the team a little more time to gel. Nesbitt gets injured, and we are potentially in deep doo-doo though…

It’s too bad we can’t have an off week against a more formidable foe than UGA, maybe UVA or WF.

Toughest game on the sked is going to be FSU in Tally. FSU will be better and they will be wanting payback. If we can win that one, we can win them all. Not saying we will, of course.

Wake Forest isn’t quite as good as they were a couple years back. I’d say that swapping them for BC is a wash at worst, and maybe a bit easier for us.

Glad we only have one FCS game on the sked this year, even if we have to travel to Music City to do it. Let’s go 3-0 in the SEC this year!

Glad we finally have an off week before COFH. I’d still like to see that game moved off of Thanksgiving weekend, so so many Jackets fans won’t be out of town for the game.

Looks like 9-3, maybe 8-4 to me…I humbly disagree w/ an earlier post, I think UGA will be the best team we play this year…altho V-Tech is very good and FSU is on the rise. There are a lot of mid-level teams that look like wild cards to me. How good will Miami be? Wake Forest? N Carolina? I hope the Jackets (team and coaches) use the LSU beatdown as motivation in the offseason…can’t wait for Sept 5th!

RAMBLER,

You are going to need more than one week off to get ready for the only good team on that pathetic schedule. The beatdown is coming, just go ahead and get ready for it.

You have no chance this year DawginLex. The whole mutt nation has somehow decided that Cox will be better than Stafford… Are you serious??? How are you kids going to be any better on offense without your 2 first round draft picks? Yes, your defense will be better (only b/c it COULDN’T get worse), but you still won’t be able to score.

You girls are going to get beat down in Atlanta this year. Our idiot coach was asked who the most inbred, classless losers were, and so he pointed to the uga stands. It was an easy question with a simple answer.

I can see the glazed look in DawginLex’s eyes after he tried to understand all the gyrations involved in getting the Thursday night game scheduling done. The only “pathetic” thing about our schedule is that we have to play 3 SEC teams this year.

Seems like ESPN likes what they have seen of GT’s future by scheduling TWO Thursday night games this year. Some might even say that we actually have 2 weeks off before the UGAg game, since we play Duke the week before, a team we shutout last year while playing a true freshman QB.

Can’t wait to see GameDay in Atlanta on November 28th!!

BobinBuford- it’s funny, I’ve seen mentions of the possibility of the GameDay crew coming in other places. That seems to be a pretty big deal.

I guess the thing to remember is that it’s not that you have a great game, but also the best game that weekend. And by best game, that likely means either a very compelling matchup or two teams in the top 10. Tech-UGA would be a possibility. I’d say Virginia Tech would be another.

FYI, the last time GameDay went to a game between two ACC teams was in 2006, Tech at Clemson, a forgettable day for the Jackets. Wikipedia’s list is here).

Only ONE off week will more than likely present problems for the Jackets in 2009.

The good thing about the off week is that it comes before the GA game - time to get healthy & rested; foresight not good for GA.

It’s so funny how all the “experts” on TV and in print media talk about how good Va.Tech, FSU, and Miami will be in 2009. Tech was the YOUNGEST team in the ACC in 2008, and we all witnessed how they got better running the T.O. as the season progressed.

Now….how many of Tech’s starting 11 on offense from the FSU game on were seniors? = O, or none. So, with another spring & summer to become even more precise at running the T.O. while building DEPTH, it is apparent the Jackets will also be quite improved from 2008.

In fact, I’d even argue that Tech will improve even more than VT, FSU, or Miami. Why do I believe that? B/C the Jackets are still learning a totally NEW offensive scheme (again, with 11 returning starters), while the others will be running offensive schemes that have been in place for years in addition to replacing key pieces to their line-ups.

Depth, Depth, Depth is what the Jackets will desperately need in 2009. Only one off week will be brutal!

11 weeks in a row without a break will be very rough. It cant be understated how that kind of wear can set in on a team. 2008 showed this much. They seemed to be wearing down until that break before Miami with an additional nine days before Georgia. Vandy isnt a world beater, but they are a tough game to plug into that stretch, and Miss St. could also be better with their new coach (Dan Mullen from Florida).

Georgia will still be the toughest game on the schedule. Even with losing Stafford and Moreno, they are well stocked. It would be foolish to think the UGA defense will take the year off again like they did last year. That was the worst defense they have had in the Mark Richt era. Also, UGA mysteriously plays better on the road than at home. I dont think they have lost more than 4 legit road games since Richt has been there (not including UF at a Jacksonville which is supposed to be neutral). He often tries to mimic their road routine at home.

Va Tech will be the next toughest game. Their offense grew up a lot over last year with Taylor immerging. Their defense will be tough as nails. UNC will also be tough. They are recruiting like crazy. North Carolina is a hot bed of talent and Butch Davis has done a heck of a job turning them around so far.

The jury is out on FSU or Miami. It remains to be seen whether they have they have the type of exceptional skill players on offense that helped build their dynasties. Once they get that back on offense, they will again be dominant.

5 games in the month of October are pretty rough:

Well, except for the 2 SEC teams we play. Hopefully we can beat Vandy for the 11th time in a row…and Mississippi State would have to have one helluva turnaround to beat us after last year’s 38-7 smack-down the Jackets handed them.

In between those 2, we’ve got @ FSU in Doak Campbell, then VA TECH at home…which will make/break our year….follow that up @ UVA…where they’ve beat us 8 times in a row. Ouch.

CPJ seems to be the streak breaker so hopefully the Charlottesville Curse will come to and end. At FSU could be another one. I am confident the offense will be better. If the defense can improve it could be a really exciting year.

By StingerSplash

February 13, 2009 4:46 PM | Link to this

In his days at GSU, PJ also had 11 straight weeks of games and the Eagles had that last weekend off — the one right before the playoffs started. Three NC game appearances, two NC titles, a semifinal berth in another year … yeah, I’d say he’d be all right with the current schedule. Not wild about a conference game five days after the opener. Got to jump on Jax State early and get the starters out of there, if possible. October’s a killer too, but an extra week before the UGa game … CMR and Willie had two weeks to get ready and it didn’t help them a lick. PJ with two weeks to get ready? Get ready for a spanking, puppies.

The only two games Tech played last year I would take back are the Carolina game with too little rest and the LSU game with too much rest. CPJ is a great coach and the longer he is at Tech the better he will get at rebounding to the conditions at hand.

By Expert

Tech will be good in ‘09, but that’s a pretty tough schedule. I think Tech still has some depth issues and that their offense will continue to be inconsistant as long as they do not have a legitimate passing threat. Nobody will take their passing game seriously as long as Josh Nesbitt is the quarterback. They will continue to load the box. Sometimes it will work (think LSU) and sometimes it won’t (think UGA). My prediction: 8-4.

Extra point: I think Tech struggles in bowl games under Paul Johnson due to the extra time for opposing defenses to prepare.

By ooc teams

February 13, 2009 8:22 PM | Link to this

I wonder why we schedule the likes of msu and vandy as ooc opponents? Seems like most big time programs that want a shot at the mnc try to fill it with patsies willing to play you at your home (e.g. UF, Ohio state, etc) . When we schedule a home and home like msu or vandy, we are hurting our nc chances by a) taking on tougher than necessary ooc competition, and b) locking in a travel to away game this year or next. Just my two cents.

By Wreck7

February 13, 2009 8:41 PM | Link to this

Nesbitt is a legit passing threat. The problem was that everytime he dropped back to pass, he had defenders chasing him backward. Our OL was the problem in the pass game, not our QB.

By Response to Expert

February 13, 2009 10:43 PM | Link to this

To Expert:

Here’s PJ’s bowl outcome while at NAVY:

1st bowl game (in his 2nd season) was a blowout loss.

2nd, 3rd, & 4th bowl games (in the following seasons) were blowout WINS.

his 5th bowl game (and final season at Navy) was 35-32 loss.

I think he will re-think his “we treat bowl games as rewards, and don’t pratice as hard as during the regular season” comment before the Chick-Fil-A bowl, and realize that the fans who spend the $ and make the effort to attend the bowl game deserve AND expect better.

I believe Tech will be fine in bowl games from here forward. Plus, as they get better & better at executing the offense it is only going to make it that much tougher for their opponents to adequately “mimic” the T.O. for its defense during bowl prep.

Yes, Tech got blown out by LSU, but it’s amazing how people forget the fumbled punt at the 20; and subsequent LSU TD (14-3), followed by Tech’s unsucessful FAKE PUNT from its own 20 yard line; resulting in ANOTHER LSU TD, and 20-3 lead. Forty (40) yards of offense for LSU resulting in 14 pts. To go furhter … LSU had 71 yards of NET offense in the game which resulted in 24 points.

Yes, Tech still didn’t score, but we’ve seen time & time again how tough it is to stop the “snowball” from rolling once it has started …….. see 11/29/08, in Athens.

Not a bad season for a team that many, including yourself I’d bet, predicted to finish with 3, MAYBE 4, wins. So I’m glad you were able to find a 2008 commemorative ring for your boyfriend. Hope the two of you have a great Valentine’s Day.

If the O-line can pass protect this year, we could really be dangerous. If not, we will finish 8-4 at best. Establishing a legit backup for Nesbitt will be another key. Secondary and LB’s should be much better, making up for D-line losses. Things looking up on the Flats.

By LSU

February 14, 2009 12:03 PM | Link to this

Why don’t you schedule us for a couple of years instead of Mississippi State and Vandervilt?

Oh yeah, 38-3.

By To Arob ...

February 14, 2009 2:22 PM | Link to this

Arob …

I don’t think the O-line’s pass blocking can do anything but get better - being it was already at rock bottom in 2008.

I think 8-4 would be a very good season when you consider the brutalness of the schedule; October, with 5 games - 4 road - is not looking like a lot of fun at this point. I’m a little concerned about only one off week; let’s hope PJ finds some quality depth this spring and summer. Though I can’t complain about the off week coming the week before the GA game … best time to get the Jackets rested & fresh.

Backup for Nesbitt …. remember the name Tevin Washington. He redshirted last year, and from what I saw in the practices I attended, and the end-of-summer scrimmage, he looks like a pretty good option at QB.

Let’s also mention Athony Allen (transfer from Louisville); this guy is a stud! He’s every bit as good as “Earth, Wind & DWYER” but a little BIGGER! So no problems at B-back; except that Lucas Cox might not play as much. Keep the A-backs healthy (Embry Peeples), add another WR threat/mismatch with Stephen Hill, and H#LL YES the offense is going to be dangerous!

I’m betting the D is better in 2009 than it was in 2008. What the experience on the D-line did for the LBs & DBs in 2008 is going to be more than paid back in 2009 with all the skill & depth that was discovered at those positions. There were quite a few injuries to the LBs & DBs in 2008 that enabled a few guys to show their skills. And now with the charges being drop against Tarrant, that adds another very good DB to the mix. This kid was one of the state’s best prospects coming out of high school a couple years ago.

So, I’m not as worried about execution as I am about quality depth, and the schedule having just the one off week.

And to “LSU”…. 38-3; accidents do happen. To believe that LSU beats Tech in similar fashion from here forward would mean you also believe that Florida will clobber LSU every time they play them from here forward as well, right?

Tech will go no better than 7 or 8 wins. Tech’s offense will beat a team or two they are not supposed to beat, but also is good for a couple of losses a year. Turnovers and the inability to come from behind will doom them. Losses on the d line and sub par linebackers will keep Tech in the middle of the conference. Clemson, UNC and FSU will all improve. Tech has no depth at quarterback and the lack of balance will allow teams to keep them one dimensional. When they do throw the receivers drop more times than not, but the biggest problem is the stupidity of playing the entire game with lineman leaned forward with weight on their hands and then asking them to pass drop - you saw what an athletic team like LSU does with that. No, Johnson is like Gailey, a good enough coach to always win his seven or eight, but not good enough to get anyone to the top tier. Enjoy the Emerald Bowl Techmites.

As far as the schedule goes, we do get two extra days after the Miami Thursday night game, so technically we do get a little time off this year.

No backup for Nesbitt?? What about Jaybo Shaw, who will have another year under his belt running the offense??

Joemama? Turnovers? We had only ONE against UGA - and that was on a long pass at the end of the half.

All I know about CPJ and his team is this “mediocre” coach beat both Bobby Bowden AND Saint Richt last year.
