Lawal’s looming decision

As great as Tech’s basketball recruiting class is, next season hinges on one thing above all else: whether Gani Lawal comes back.

The 6-9 sophomore said last week he is planning to return, but also that he would explore the NBA after the season. When I asked if he’d leave if he were a guaranteed lottery pick, he said it was too early to say.

In Tech’s latest loss, 57-56 to Maryland Sunday night, it was easy to see why NBA scouts are high on Lawal, and why some mock drafts peg him as a late lottery pick. (Others project Lawal just outside the 14-team lottery).

Lawal, the ACC’s leading rebounder, grabbed 14 rebounds against the Terps and drew a double team every time he touched the ball. His one-hand follow dunk in the second half got everyone out of their seats.

ESPN.com’s Chad Ford rates Lawal the 8th-best big man in the 2009 draft. Here is his breakdown.

Lawal also was the subject of a good piece by Bill Hass on the ACC’s website.

Lawal has lots of room for improvement, especially as a passer and at the foul line. But many NBA teams don’t mind taking unfinished products with Lawal’s upside.

So how do you think this will play out?

Gani Lawal will be a good pro someday. He’s got a pro body, can run the floor and jump out of the building. He’s also smart. The downside at the moment is his lack of basketball SKILLS. No 12-15’ jump shot. No offensive moves. Weak ball handling. Bad passing. He can rebound and plays decent defense. Is he going to get better sitting on some pro team’s bench?

Why are so many people pinning all their hopes on next season as the “turnaround”? With our without Gani, Tech will do no better than .500 in the ACC, still suffer poor free throw shooting (well with Gani gone team free throw % should improve), poor passing, inability to inbound the ball, and probably someone will have a freak injury.

Watching a Tech game is like watching a train wreck. The team seems to be hussling but their lack in basic basketball skills is overwhelming. Look how many close games they have lost. That is a bad sign. Is it coaching?

I’m sorry if I seem a little negative but I’m just basing my view of the future on the history of the team. I have followed this team since the 80’s and under Hewitt the team just keeps making the same mistakes year after year. It gets old and I no longer have any hope of imporvement. I still want them to win but I just cannot watch the same old mistakes time and time again.

I will base my decision to buy season tickets next year on whether or not Hewitt makes staff changes. We are stuck with Hewitt for the forseeable future because of the ridiculous roller clause Braine put in his contract, and Hewitt does do some things well, but I cannot watch another season of complete ineptitude on offense. It just isn’t entertaining. If Hewitt can’t see that he needs help coaching offense, we will be a bubble team in the best years. Eventually the talent will stop coming (e.g. Cremins final 3 or 4 years) and even the bubble will be out of reach.

I just cannot carry on this charade any longer. It is time for me to come out of the closet. As many of you may have suspected, I am not really a Tech fan and I know that Tech doesn’t have Tickle Piles. I am really a gay Dawg fan! There are a lot more of us (gay Dawg fans) than you might think. I thought that by making fun of Tech I could get in good graces with my Dawg friends. But it is simply not working, and I cannot continue living this lie. Please forgive me!

Gani is gone. He is going to learn as much riding the pine in the NBA, as he is coming back and playing for Hewitt.

I knew it was going to be bad this year, but not this bad.

Actually GROUND HOG DAY keeps getting worse. This is normally the point when Hewitt’s teams starting winning a few games.

I remember when Malcolm Mackey was the only decent player on the team, and we still went dancing with a 48 team field.

Here we have another lottery pick, and we are not even a bubble team. WOW!!!

This message is for GGODSEY. I read what you wrote about Tony last week and I want you to know what kind of man you have slandered with your lies. I was unemployed november and december. This brother dropped off enough money for me to maintain my household, and for my kids could have a merry christmas until I got a job. He was off to cali to watch GT play 2 games and then he headed to Jamaica. When I could pay him back he told me, I was insulting him because he is only doing what he is suppose to do in this world. Seven years ago on a cold january night it was 2 degrees and we pulled in front of his buddies club and there was a homeless man outside. The brother took off his expensive overcoat, now he’s shivering, came back to the car took his last 25 dollars out of the glove compartment gave it to the man and told him to go get something to eat, find someplace warm to sleep. We went into the club and this woman said to him, why did you give that bum your coat. He told her, God, does not like ugly. The man is only down, and it only takes one hand from a stranger to lift someone, and the gaul of you to say that about him. He also said that when you have more then enough you should share with those less fortunate. The owner came out of his office because someone told him what tony had just done. He said, my man. Tony said, I’m only doing what I’m suppose to do in this world, no more, no less. The brother just lost a good friend that was killed last friday, then robbed. The memorial was saturday and this brother wrote a poem so deep, it blew those people away. You would never know he is a poet because he’s always joking, partying and having fun. I told him one day he should become a comedian. He said, he couldn’t afford to leave insurance because he needs money to help people that are in need. His morals and value’s are second to none. He has one principle in life, and that is! Treat people, the way you want people to treat you. He live’s his life by that code. His family is a warm and caring family. This brother has a very heavy heart from loosing his friend. He told me what hurts the most is that is woman in Jamaica called him saturday crying because of what you wrote about him. He told me, what hurts the most was that he was not there to wipe away her tears, hold her in his arms, and say, baby, everything is going to be alright. This man is well respected in his field of insurance, but even more loved and respected by his friends. To be such a low key guy, you would be surprised of the people that he know. You, GGODSEY, have angered so many of his friends, because no one sane or insane would have the nerve to say what you have written about him. That man hangs with the rich, the poor, and some very bad people. I’ve never known anyone to give so much, and expect nothing in return. You need to apoligize for what you said about him and his family, but most of all, what you wrote about him using his name, and maybe, just maybe, he will let this go. One thing I know for sure about him is, when he say’s he’s going to do something, his word is more solid then gold. That brother can move a mountain, and if he can’t, know that his friends can. If you knew the kind of person that he is, you would want to hang with him. The man is off the chart. This man has so much faith in CPH and that team pulling it together to win the ACC tournament is unbelievable. I don’t see it happening, but then again, I would never bet against what he believes in because he only knows how to win. I hope you see this and act accordingly.

Bring back M Price. Sorry CPH but you need to step down. We need to recruit some four year players instead of the one and dones. I’m sure Favors is a good kid but I wish he was going to NC State. We need more kids like Elder, Ish, Harpring, Luke, Causey and so on. AS far as Lawal is concerned, he’s gone. “Chicago”, tell Tony not to use his real name if he gets offended easily. There are A holes on this blog that get tiny erections when they get someone (Tony, in this case) upset. Just blow it off dude. Rumor has it that ggodsey is H. Walker’s fourth personality.

Who give a rats’ a%$ - how does this article have any merit? let’s talk about how awful the team is and how horrible the coach is. How about the fact that we are DEAD LAST in the ACC - I mean, come on - when is the last time that happened. It will take us years to dig out of this hole Hewitt has put us in. Move on DRAD - fire HEWITT now.

Gordon, don’t buy. The only way to prompt change is through the wallet. I already project season ticket purchases for next year’s bball games will probably be at a 15 year low. DRAD can say what he wants, but loss revenue due to seats, concessions, TV games, post season touneys, etc., will add up. I think to the point where they would equal his buy-out. Be gone Hewitt! You should be admirable and resign!!! But, we all know he has no backbone or spine!

GGODSEY. I read what you wrote about my boy over the weekend. I have my own business, my own home, and I am drop dead fine. I was in disbelief of what I read. I think you must be one of the dumbest people in the world. This brother is handsome, intelligent, funny, and somone I would like to marry. The only problem is, I know his heart lie’s elsewhere, because he told me that. Most men would not do that. You have no idea of how many people this man has helped in his life. When he die’s, his legacy of goodness and kindness will carry on through the hearts of the many people he has helped on this earth. This man has friends around the world, and you need to know that. Just who in the hell do you think you are by slandering this man. His heart, and his mind is in a very dark place right now thanks to you. One thing you don’t know about him is the people that he has helped in this world are blowing up his phone to see what they can do. You know something, I don’t know why you would attack him, because he walks with god 24/7. He fears no man or woman on this earth. His only fear in life is drowning, so he will not go swimming or get on a boat. I was riding with him one night and he was going 152 miles an hour. Scared the you know what out of me. He didn’t want to be late for dinner at a plush restaurant. If he asked me to marry him, I would find a preacher asap, because they don’t make men like him anymore and I wouldn’t give him a chance to change his mind. He’s honest, kind, caring, a perfect gentleman, yet, he’s a bad boy, with some bad friends. If he’s say’s he can find you, take it to the bank that he will. I have much love for him and his family. Do me a favor GGODSEY, and make your wrong a right. He is one angry black right now. One thing he tells people that approaches him the wrong way. I AM NOT THE ONE. They back off, and believe it or not, he’s a non violent person. Wake up and smell the coffee whoever you are. If I were you, I would not ever go on this site and mention his name again, other then to say Mr. Shumpert I am sorry for my actions. I don’t think you realize who you are messing with on line.

When you have the worst coach in the league you are going to have the worst team in the league. Hewitt is by far the worst coach in the ACC and GT is the worst team in the ACC. Everyone keeps talking about next years recruiting class being so good but the biggest problem now is the youth on the team. With 5 freshman that is going to be even a bigger problem next season. And don’t be shocked if Lawal and Shumpert are gone to the NBA after this season. It has happened before. It is obvious that Hewitt can’t develop guards and can’t get kids to stay in school. Ground Hog Day will continue next year and the excuses will continue.

This message is for ggodsey. I know Tony very well. In fact, we are in the same field (insurance). ggodsey, you don’t know who you’re messing with. Like the other two sisters stated earlier. Tony is a bad man. Sure, some say he’s not “intelligent” enough or he doesn’t come off as “bright.” But so what? Many of his critics also argue that he has a hard time reading, writing, and doesn’t understand basic math skills like addition/subtraction and long hand division. But guess who the best insurance agent this side of the Missippi is? That’s right- Tony.

What matters is what his friends and family think of him. Sure, people who see him on the street might think a certain way of him. He might look “weird” to some who just judge a man on appearances. But what matters is his heart.

I love you Tony.

You really think this man would want an Escalade? This man worked his tail off to get his GED. I remember him staying up all night one time trying to figure out multiplication tables. Lawal might not come back. This is great news for Paul Hewitt. Now next year when his team suxs again due to poor coaching, he can blame the exit of Lawal as the reason we stink again. DRAD will back him up and we’ll have another 3 years of losing just in time for CPH to have a good recruiting class to keep him around again. Fantastic!

Ramble ON!!…Your facts about there being a 48-team tournament field when malcom mackey was at tech is completely false. The NCAA went to the 64 team version in 84 or 85. Mackey was there from 89-93.

This tech team is completely pathetic. I can’t believe Tech has lost 8 in a row to Maryland. Maryland hasn’t had a good team in the last 5 years, so that is even more unforgiveable. I can see losing to Duke or UNC 8 times in a row, but not Maryland. Hewitt should be fired for just that record.

Even if Lawal returns, it will be yet another transition year. If he doesn’t it could be beyond horrible. And then Favors will leave after next year so there is no good teams in sight. The talent level will remain the same. I do believe there is more than enough talent at Tech to be much better than they are, but they have consistently played under their talent for the last 4 years. There is no reason to hope that next year’s class will do anything to change that. Even if it does, it will be missing its best piece after one season.

Hewitt is a fantastic recruiter. Can’t hang on to them and can’t coach them very well while they’re there.

They’ve been online ever since November 29th trying to heal from the devastating football loss by talking trash to tech fans. I know I know…it’s weird to talk trash to a team you LOST to right? Well that’s just how they handle things.

I also seem to recall Mr. Shumpert being a big reason for Tech whooping UGA this year in B-ball. 67-62. Remember losers?!? So, now that you are seriously offending people are you happy ggodsey? This blog is supposed to be about GT Basketball. Get off it if you want to discuss something else.

I think after last nights game that I’m on board with Ramble ON. This team would be just as well off if we had no coach at all, just let the kids go out and play. Let the first ones to the gym start and when you get tired ask for a sub.

Maybe if the kids had to answer to each other instead of Coach Hewitt they might stop throwing the ball away. Turnovers are the reason this team is last in the ACC. Our FT shooting has gotten better. Our defense is fine. But if you have 20 TO’s a game you are going to lose most every night.

Clinch has been a disaster this year. Shooting 31% this season, worse from 3pt range. No defense at all on the perimeter. Has to be the the worst senior starter in the ACC and probably the worse 5-star player out of high school to come to Tech.

Lawal should stay at GT for atleast 1 more year (maybe more). He needs more time to develop and improve his game. He will eventually be a TOP 10 or maybe even TOP 5 draft pick if he stays long enough to develop his game.

Also, if he stays at GT…….the superb recruiting class added to the existing players on the team will result in huge success for the GT B-Ball program. This would be good for GT, the fans and Lawal; because Lawal and all of the other players on the team will receive more attention from the media and the NBA scouts!!

Rambleon…Mackey was at Tech after Price and Copmany. When Price started, the field was 53 with play-ins. Went to 64 in 85. It was never 48 when Mackey was there….we have to have better guard play. If Miller can’t do it, Udofia will. That is the real key , even with Favors and the rest coming. Even more important than Lawal leaving early. Be glad the kids don’t quit. When Favors, Holsey, Shumpert are complmented by Bell, Storrs and the rest..Tech will be very good next year. If these kids quiton Hewiit, then you should worry. The talent isn’t there this year. Tech will have it in 2010….wish Clinch would be replaced by Storrs/Foreman. He is KILLING us.

There IS talent on this team - that is the problem.

And, there’s been talent in the past - it just doesn’t get coached up!

If Gani Lawal is now conisidered to be the 8th pick int he first round of the NBA draft - he should leave.

All the talent in the world (and we’ve had some) is not going to change this program until we change the coach.

You guys are killing me with this kill Hewitt garbage. Yes I am upset we have not won more games. But firing Hewitt is NOT the answer. You guys are as bad as the AD at Maryland trying to hang Williams. Hewitt’s team compete. Bottom line. Whoever siad that we have not been int he cellar like this in forever need to get a clue. Look at Cremins record in the ACC. 4 seasons above 5th. Most in the bottom 3. only difference was that #7 in the ACC at the time still made the tourney. Hewitt has some talent, but no guys to hang a program on who are upper classmen. TWO starters that were supposed to be sr leaders. Dickey was above Aminu for the past 4 years for a reason, he had better production on the court. You can’t lose your two best Srs and not have repercussions from it. You guys say Maryland sucks? Look up who has a winning record against Duke for the past 5 years at Duke. the competition is tougher in the toughest conference. I am excited because why don’t you look up the best recruiting classes for Ga Tech over the years. Hewitt has two of the top ever and this class ranked 4th is the ONLY time we have been in the top 10 in recruiting. you guys got fire happy with Chan and won’t stop until everyone gets fired. The baseball team hasn’t been to the final four in baseball, why dont we fire the Baseball coach. Tech’s teams did not compete against and win against quality programs any better before Hewitt. In the mid 80’s to 90 I’ll give you that but the 12 years after that Cremins had one really good season and they lost in the sweet 16. That was Cremins best team in 12 years and they did not win the ACC. Although it was a good game we lost. And we had what 3 or 4 pros on that team. This racial bashing is ridiculous. I’m white and ashamed at racist comments in this blog. Its does not help at all. I’m glad Hewitt is here. We can’t do any better than him. He has an aggressive style and without the players it looks rough at times. But you ahve to have that style to compete with the Goliaths in this conference. Clemson is getting better but this is the first year they are competing with the big boys. I’d rather have our teams. Of coarse I’d like to have better years. But that does not come in the ACC without good players. And this class is the best Tech has done EVER! And you want to throw in the towel. It hought you guys went to GT. Engineering school was not a bed of roses, it was hard. And so are some of these seasons we have had. But its not like what Roy Williams walked into. I’d be quite upset if we were getting blown out. But we just can’t find a way to win. We are in games, the players are there but execution at critical times is hurting us. I don’t call that coaching. My family went to Duke and UNC and they are more scared to play us than Clemson or others. If we were getting blown out of games I would not even be writing, but we are getting beat by a couple of points. Free throw shooting is getting better. We have only one guard who has been shooting decent and he’s a freshman. See how many other teams can win without decent help from the perimeter. So don’t buy tickets, vow to quit following we don’t need you. But thinking that Hewitt has not done his best and thinking that he is running the program in the ground is crazy. 4th recruiting class in the nation coming, not the ACC the nation! You know the coach over at Texas got out of the ACC b/c he could not compete with the big boys. Cremins was a joke after ‘96. Quit, come back etc. You want to look at bad offense, look at how stagnent the offense was then. We have turnovers because we have an aggressive style and don’t have the guys. In that awesome year, we were insane. Tech ball was not that good in 14 years. And afterwards we have not had program guys to keep it going. The mass exodus of players was not something Cremins had to contend with. Coach K never lost ANY player early until after 2000 and then 3 left early on the same team. Its different out there. I like that players come and then leave b/c then we start to get better players as what is coming in. You don’t think Hewitt is a good coach, well there’s an NBA allstar who’s son thinks different. Who you want to believe, a man who gave his blessing for his son to come here, or some upset fan who does not understand losin and not competing are not the same thing. Did you guys catch some of these other games? UVA getting killed at Duke, the same Duke tema that we palyed with for 30 minutes. And with some guard production and wing forward we would be in much better shape. This season has been muh more of a disappointment than want to admit, but fire the coach is not the answer. Support him and the program. See what the next few years bring. he is not wanting to cut and run like others who have had tough times in the ACC.

To Back Off Hewitt:

Good post. I like to see passion and focus instead of silliness in the blogs. However, I do not agree with you. I fully admit that I am not a basketball player, coach, or analyst. However, either he is a great recruiter who cannot coach, or he is great coach who really does not have the talent (i.e. the recruits)on the team to win - not compete, but WIN. Yes, there are occasional games where Tech (or any team) will win a game they should lose, or lose a game they should win. But the extensive body of work that Paul Hewitt has put together still says either he cannot coach, or he cannot recruit. Most everyone agrees that Tech has had good recruiting classes, although he has a very poor record in recruiting true point guards (maybe not top 5 classes, but good ones) so it HAS to come down to his coaching. Good teams start with talent, but the coach is responsible for adding skills to those talents in order to WIN GAMES. This is not a one season problem, and everyone knows it. He is a fine representative for Tech, but his on-the-court product is below average, again and again. Year after year. It’s just a fact. Look at his record. I don’t care about the Cremins years. I care about now. It is unrealistic to have so many mediocre seasons and yet somehow it is always bad luck, or the NBA, or injury, or whatever. He has had plenty of time to prove otherwise, but there is NO evidence that he will get better. If he could not win consistently with three lottery picks, what makes you think that suddenly he’ll learn to coach when he gets his fourth or fifth ones?

And of course Hewitt does not want to “cut and run” - why would he? He cannot get such a sweet deal anywhere else in college basketball. He stays here because he gets paid a lot of money whether he wins or not. I’m sure he tries, but be honest, how much incentive is there for him to win if he gets 5 years pay whether he does or doesn’t?

Hewitt is not a good coach - his record speaks for itself. He has had a lot of years to improve, yet this year’s team is as bad as any he’s had. If firing a coach with his record and his lack of improvement is not the answer - then what is?

come on guys, everyone knows that hewitt is not an offensive coach, and to his credit his defensive scheme is working wonders because our defense has been lights out this year. what hewitt needs to do is bring in some new assistants who are offensive-minded so we can put some more points up on that scoreboard. if hewitt does that, with his defensive scheme and his superb recruiting ability, there is no reason why the jackets can’t become a team that can consistently compete for conference, and eventually, national championships.

20+ years as a high school basketball coach here. Everyone knows that successful teams at any level have CHEMISTRY. GT’s team this year lacks two important pieces: a flat out shooter (Morrow) and a lock-down defender (Bell). The point guard position has been over-hyped. Miller could be decent and the new guy should help. If Lawal stays, GT will have all the pieces next year. If we don’t improve, fire CPH after the 2009-2010 season.

E said it best - Clinch needs to sit. Hewitt can start three guards, but put in Storrs or Foreman as the third guard. one for 11 against UMd, and not much better in most of the previous games. Or start Aminu in lieu of Lewis.

If he was a better defender or ball handler, it would be okay, but unfortunately he isn’t. maybe coming off the bench will work.

To Back off Hewitt….I have been supporting Hewitt here for months and still believe Tech will be very good next few years. This is not blind faith ,but evaluating the talent next year. But you are misrepresenting Cremins. Tech did not get to the NCAA EVER from 7th place. His marvelous run from 85-93 put Tech in the NCAA’s every year. They should have been in the next 2 years, were jobbed in 95. His teams finished no lower than SIXTH ANY of those years. The last few years of his tenure were ,indeed, difficult. But please don’t distort the facts of the best basketball coach this program ever had.
