Shooting woes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tech has shot less than 50 percent for 12 straight games after Thursday night’s 62-58 loss to Florida State.
Tech’s shooting was atrocious in Tallahassee: 34.4 percent. (FSU was even worse at 30.9 percent, but the Seminoles made up for it with a 10-point edge at the foul line).
Gani Lawal hit just 5 of 16 shots, and the Jackets made 2 of 15 three-pointers. They are 5 for 33 over their last two games from beyond the arc.
With the exception of Iman Shumpert’s rushed 3-pointer with 1:32 left, most were pretty good looks.
Lewis Clinch went 2 for 11 overall, Shumpert 1 for 6 and Lance Storrs 1 for 6. Zachery Peacock (16 points) and Alade Aminu (12 points) were the only efficient offensive players.
Tech is shooting about 40 percent in conference play.
We’re halfway through ACC play and Tech is 1-7, with five of those losses coming by 7 points or less, including three in OT.
What do you expect over the second half of the ACC schedule?

A few more conference wins would be nice, then maybe a run in the tourney. But for “all intensive purposes”, this season is about maturing who we have and getting them ready for a hopefully good season next year with our new class and Bell coming back. The frustration is reaching a high level, but we ought to give Hewitt another shot based on the incoming talent…

More of the same. This year and next year and next year …. Hey, I’ve got a great idea! Let’s go wild (or Braineless) over a fluke event and sign a mediocre coach to a rolling contract that will come back to haunt us year after year after year ….

Anyone else think Clinch is just terrible? Shoots far too much and doesn’t make nearly enough of them. Turns the ball over in traffic too much. Gani needs to work on his layups.
I expect that for a the rest of the season, a bunch of idiots will turn every single blog into a “Fire Hewitt” forum that accomplishes nothing.

I saw some beautiful ball movement last night, overshadowed by hairbrain pass attempts. Do we have anyone who can shoot a three? The effort was there, just not the execution. Go Jackets-

all I know is that it would be refreshing to hear some admission of accountability and promises to actually do something about it, other than “work harder” or “get better”. But perhaps we have to wait until the off-season to see what happens in that regard.
Otherwise, for all intents and purposes, it is simply a case of watching to see how Miller and Shumpert mature in their play. W’s and L’s matter little at this stage.
Wait ‘til next year…

You’re on the right track Larry. We can concentrate on defense and eliminating turnovers ad nauseum, but the bottom line is we need to outscore the opponent. Let’s concentrate on offense for a change, eh? That would be different from what has been there for the last 5 or so years.

Perhaps shooting practice is in order?
When Lewis Clinch has a good game, Tech usually wins…. he hasn’t had a lot of good games.
I don’t know if they are pressing or what but they simply don’t look like they have much cohesion.
Hewitt isn’t a bad coach, but the team certainly is lacking. He is going to need to adjust his strategy to the talents of his team. That hasn’t happened it seems.

WE find ways to “lose”. How on earth do you lose a game where your opponent shoots 30%. That is flat out embarrasing folks. And on the “wait till next year”……we will have to do it without Lawal….mark it down. He is gone…..already projecting his as a mid first rounder. There is an excuse I can already hear for next year..”Hey if Lawal would have just stayed……….yadayadayadayadayada

Kurt - This is not a personal shot so please don’t take it that way. Judging from your post, I gather you are a Paul Hewitt supporter. That being the case, please tell me how you would recommend correcting the systemic problems in our basketball program without firing the coach.
Is the problem lack of talent? It’s the coach’s job to recruit good talent.
Is the problem lack of motivation? It’s the coach’s job to get the team “ready to play”.
Is the problem lack of execution? It’s the coach’s job to teach proper execution in practice.
Please identify the source of the problem in our basketball program - the one that seems to resurface year after year - that is not the reponsibility of Paul Hewitt.
I am in favor of firing Paul Hewitt and I would love for somebody to tell me how to fix this program some other way.

Hewitt’s buyout, set up by Braine will cost 9.5 million any year since it continually rolls up a year. He needs asst. coaching help. We are so fundamentally unsound. The players do not develop, we do not improve as a team. Hewitt isn’t bad but isn’t very good either. We are stuck with him and need to encourage shooting practice. In fact, Lewis Clinch and others should not be allowed to even try 3 point shots until they sparkle at it in practice. This has cost us many of the games we’ve lost. It’s really frustrating.

We need to throw a buttload of $$ at Bobby Knight to come in and be the top assistant! Just imagine… Bobby teaching, Hewitt recruiting… More realistically tho…. we need to AT LEAST bring back that one of the assistants that left after the 2004/5 season.
Im kind of scared for GT to go a run, because if we DID end up middle of the pack, that would mean Hewitt could be tricked into thinking his assistants could actually teach… and make NO changes!
Hewitt your young assistants belong at a smaller school perfecting their trade!…NOT in the top conference in the nation trying to outsmart the coaching staffs of UNC, DUKE etc…….

Blind “Bees” opps meant hogs sometimes find an acorn, football team did against DAWGS and BB did against WAKE, then it is reversion to norm. Still feel bad for DR and his Hewitt situation, can’t afford to fire, can not even stop contract rollover as even more expensive, at least in Athens they can try to get it right. Is it hope that Hewitt changes that keeps my TECH friends coming back for more punishment. Next year had better be all that it can be or there will be revolt on North Ave. What excuse can Big “H” have then, seems two McDonald All Americans are not enough to win. Looks like a # 12 seed in tourney. If they are as good as UGA they can make a run to championship.

Hewitt’s had WAY too much talent during his tenure here at Tech to be, I think this if fairly accurate, 59-80 in conference play.
That record is just plain abysmal, and absolutely does NOT warrant him another “chance” next season no matter how good the recruiting class coming in is.
I’ve seen monkey sh%t-fights in the zoo more organized than what Hewitt’s throwing out on the court each night.
WAY too much talent to have so drastically underacheived; Hewitt needs to be replaced!

I would like to see some kind of ligitimate offense being run. The guys go down the floor and either get a quick shot for 3 (and miss), an underneath look(and miss)or turn the ball over. What do they do in practice? This is the most disgusting job of coaching I have ever witnessed.

Dickey was a constant underachiever and a senior last year so I’m not sure where you’re going with that. This is at least the second time I’ve seen Dickey mentioned as though he left early or something. I’m not sure why we even bother using Bell as en excuse… if our defense can hold a team to 30% shooting they’re doing their job. I wonder if Ole Miss, who lost three starters to season-ending knee injuries, makes as many excuses as Tech.
Finally, the phrase is for all INTENTS AND PURPOSES… write it 100 times if you have to.

If I see Clinch take another rushed, highly contested, off balance jump shot, I’m going to puke!!! I am so glad he is a senior and we do not have to deal with another year of the academic issues and inconsistent play from an overrated 5 star bust. I keep asking myself why Hewitt doesn’t pull his arse out of the game everytime he takes a bad shot, which is such a brick it allows our opponent to get out and run a fast break. Then I remember, we don’t have any other guards.
Hewitt needs to recruit a pure jump shooter. Look at Terrence Oglesby from Clemson, he’s not the fastest guy, not the most athletic guy, but he makes the defense have to guard the perimeter because he can shoot lights out. If we had anyone on this team that could consistently shoot from the outside, Lawal, Peacock, and Aminu would have a field day inside. Instead, teams can just play a simple 2-3 zone, pack the lane, and dare us to beat them from the perimeter. It’s so easy to defend a Hewitt coached team. Anyone else notice Lawal didn’t touch the ball on offense for the first 7 minutes of the game, because the defense swarmed him and dared Clinch, Miller, and Shumpert to shoot from the outside. It is so frustrating watching this team play.

Everyone has off nights shooting. It was all those times down the stretch that we came down and turned the ball over that cost us the game; a complete lack of poise and confidence. The individual errors may rest with the players who made them, but the overall panic mode that we seemed to get into and the helter skelter play during which we lost the lead both point squarely at you know who, the tall cat with the moustache who appears just as lost as the team at times like this. We so needed some coaching. Most of the game was played and, like the Wake Forest game, reasonably well coached. In the end when we came flying down the court a dozen times or more in a row and chunked up a brick or, worse, simply gave the ball away on unforced turnover after turnover, I kept wishing he could hear me and, I imagine, many of you as well yelling at hime to take charge, calm them down, COACH them a little. Wake up coach, you’re killing us.

Just to clear up some confusion, Dickey had a year of eligibility left and was expected to play this year, but he left for pro ball in Europe.
It would have helped to have him this season, but he was always inconsistent offensively, kinda like the rest of this team. Bell would have helped on defense, but he’s not a shooter either. Maybe we would have won a few more games, but not enough to make the Big Dance.

Shumpert, I’m sorry that AJC is so unprofessional that they don’t censor this site. No other major newspaper in the country would allow those kind of comments to be posted. With that said, Iman has the balls to take the team on his back down the stretch, but he’s an out of control freshman who needs to slow down and defer to the big guys down low.

Ben: there’s enough Political Correctness going on in the country…. and its tearing this country apart because whites are becoming 2nd class citizens in thier own country. JUST LIKE in England where if you criticize a person thats not white, you can loose your job, and be thrown in jail for a “hate crime”
This idea of an “multi-cultural utopia” is a day dream forced upon us by the new NWO.
Im scarred of Obama allowing mass immigration from 3rd world countries like what has happened to England, France, Germany, and now Scottland.
Anyone who dare speak out against it is automatically labeled a “racist” and cast aside, looses their job, and possibly thrown in jail. Such is the fate of America if we continue on the path the E.U. would like for us. At least the people of Italy were smart enough not to fall into the white-guilt trap that has taken over most of Europe…….

The team does best when they play really tough defense. When they do that, they get turnovers and easy high percentage shots.
Their half court offense is awful. They don’t play like a team, they have not jelled. Our team that made it to the national championship were not stars, but they played as a team, they had good defenders.
I don’t know why CPH has not invited Dennis Scott to work with the guards on their 3 point shooting. If he won’t do this he might as well tell them to stop firing them up. 2-15 (6 pts) is much worse than 5-16 (10 pts) from inside the arc. Neither is good, but 2-15 is awful.
When other teams put up a tenacious defense that causes us to have a lot of turnovers, we should be right back in their face with tough defense.
I thought this team would be a bit better than they are, but these guys.
By the way, if people want to talk political stuff, go to the editorial page. This is sports, not a place to spout off your political beliefs.

Not sure what “intensive purposes” means, hopefully that isn’t coming from a fellow Tech grad.
Anyway, Hewitt has kept his job because 7 guys played out of their minds for 3 weekends. Other than that, his teams have been mediocre at best (and he’s had NBA talent). Hewitt’s best coaching move is to put his hands on his head, smile and stare blankly at his players. He constantly admits that he doesn’t know why our players commit turnovers, can’t shoot, and can’t play defense and admits he doesn’t know how to fix it. Tech fans didn’t stand for Gailey’s mediocrity and we sure as heck shouldn’t stand for it when it comes to baksetball.

another one point loss to a sorry ACC team. What is going on? I mean, we can’t even beat Maryland at home!! Hewitt is gone regardless of the payout b/c GLaw is gone and we’ll be back to square one. Favors will leave after one year too, so doesn’t matter. Let’s gut the bench and start over. We can’t get any worse. Its on the kids too. They are way too talented to keep making bone head mistakes that Hewitt cannot control. He can’t take the shots or make the passes for the kids. And Clinch needs to go back to study hall b/c he flat out stinks up the court. The worse player on our team is that kid from Miami who committs stupid fouls and never hustles. Dreaded team to watch. Dreaded!!! I’ll keep on posting negative until they start playing positive. PERIOD!!!!! Disgusted.
