Tech looking at a blue-collar signing class

It looks like Tech will be siging a blue-collar, well-balanced class today with at least player for every position. Dean Buchan, Tech’s SID, tells me that Tech has not signed as many as 13 players from in-state since 1999.

Tech entered Signing Day with 12 in-state commitments and one Georgia signee who is already enrolled, Emanuel Dieke.

About 50 Tech fans have gathered at the Edge Center this morning, and they’re waiting for the first signee to be announced. I’ll be blogging and posting from here all day.

For tomorrow’s sports section, this is my ”forecast” of Tech’s day. Tell me how you’d rate it:

The gurus are going to rank this class between 25-50 nationally. It’s not star-studded, but it’s remarkable for its balance, with a player signed at every position. It’s also one of Tech’s faster classes. The 13 in-state signees are the most since 1999. WR Stephen Hill’s decision to stick with Tech after waffling as late as Tuesday was huge Signing Day news. This is a blue-collar class with no glaring holes. Jordan Luallen, the Indiana quarterback so well-suited for Tech’s option offense, is the centerpiece.

“Tech didn’t finish as strong as it hoped, and losing wide receiver Stephen Hill to Georgia on Signing Day hurt”

Todd are you stating this as fact?

re: Hill. I’m just projecting that, T. But I spoke w/ Hill’s coach yesterday, and it doesn’t look good.

Tech has anounced five signees so far:

Jordan Luallen

Brandon Watts

Ray Beno

Carl Miles

Roderick Sweeting

Quick sum on the coaches’ comments: Luallen will have a chance to play or even start as a freshman. … Beno will begin as a center and go from there. He played tackle in high school. … Watts, a LB, is fast enough to play safety or nickel back.

Yep, just got word about Stephen Hill. Great news for Tech.

Not sure what his drama last night was about. His coach indicated that he was leaning toward Georgia. When we talked to Hill, he seemed more undecided. Who knows, but I do think there was a point yesterday when Hill planned to make a switch. But again, great news for Tech. The rest of the day should go predictably.

Also, Julian Burnett’s papers are in.

Hey Todd: Great job of reporting - or should I say, great job of pandering to the thUGA fans. Hill is a Jacket and will help add the passing dimension to Tech’s offense - maybe we’ll get 700 yards this year and 65 points on little Willie’s D. You can put your UGA cheerleader’s uniform back on now, Todd. Hope Hill’s signing, along with 45-42, really galls the hell out of you and the rest of the thUGA jerks.

That was stated as a fact, not an opinion, Todd. If you would have put could or will in front of hurt that would have been an opinion. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. But, hey, keep up the “good” work for Tech on signing day. Are you the best that the AJC had to offer. Good grief!

What kind of assclown operation are you running there.

Maybe Hill did waiver, but in the end he choose to be on the winning side. We beat UGA WITH Stafford, Moreno, Massoquai (who were the big contributors to the yards and points that were scored in the GT game), and now they are all gone. GT will make it at least two in a row against UGA. So Hill made a good choice.

Let see PAUL, if Tech wins 1 out of 7 games, NEVER wins its conference, NEVER wins a BCS bowl, gets pounded by LSU (a team GA beat bad), is owned by Georgia in the series,…..I forgot what my question was….

By Todd Holcomb

February 4, 2009 10:17 AM | Link to this

I mean ”blue-collar” as a compliment.

Coach Johnson was just asked about which 2-3 of this class would be the best: “You won’t know. I couldn’t begin to tell you who’s gonna be best player in this recruiting class. If it was an exact science, we wouldn’t have all these people in the NFL from Abeline Christian.”

So what I mean by blue collar is that you’ve got lots of solid prospects who’ll have to work for it. Nobody in this class is being ordained as the next big thing, certainly not on a national scale. But I think Tech did just fine.

By Todd Holcomb

February 4, 2009 10:47 AM | Link to this

I’ve got some comments from coaches on Orwin Smith, but I’m still trying to catch up. Will post in just a minute on that.

But first, let me wrap up Coach Johnson’s comments on Stephen Hill and Dontae Aycock. …

No way to know this, but I’m pretty confident in saying that Hill was ready to sign w/ UGA yesterday but reversed field back to Tech.

From listening to Johnson, Hill’s coach and from hearing what Hill told us last night, I’m going to speculate that Hill began to worry about the WR’s role in Tech’s offense and whether that would be the best preparation for the NFL. I suspect that Tech coaches calmed those fears and that Hill just needed reassurance. From an academic standpoint, sounds like Hill was 100 percent Tech.

Of course, my speculation has been wrong once today. : )

As for Dontae Aycock, I don’t blame him for looking around after the commitment, but you’ve got to admire PJ for standing firm on his rule: If you commit, you can’t visit other schools. If you do, Tech will pull the offer.

Tech has only 12-15 scholarships open for next year’s class, so I don’t think losing a player hurts Tech at all. Just opens up another scholarship for next year’s class.

JacketSteve just proved my point. We had a great offense and scored 42 on you and a ton on LSU whp pounded you. We had a down year and still went 10-3. Tech’s down years are 6-5. You will ALWAYS be second rate because you take so much pride at winning ONE game when your defense got shellacked against GA and LSU. When is the last time Tech won a big game? So you won a 3pt victory, congratulations. By the way I happen to like Tech’s team and coach, it’s the fans that are the joke.

As far as your stuff about Stafford and Moreno. They WERE great players, that isn’t why this team lost 3 games, it was defense, a lack of leadership and injuries. But just to remind you, UGA has won more than all but 4 teams over the past 7 years and won two SEC titles and two BCS bowls. Tech plays on purple turf, beats nobody out of conference and hasn’t won a big bow in 15 years.

By Nervous UGA Fans

February 4, 2009 11:43 AM | Link to this

Boy, you can sure sense the nervousness with the UGA posters. In his first year with new schemes, and 16 freshman and sophomores in the starting lineup, Paul Johnson went into Athens and beat the best UGA team of the modern era (on paper) UGA loses Stafford, Moreno and MoMass, while everybody is back for GT. Realistic UGA fans know that Joe “Bassmaster” Cox is a huge step down from Stafford. Caleb King is one of the most overrated players in recent history, and Richard Samuel has fumbleitis. The 2009 edition of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will be superior to the 2008 edition, and the game is in Atlanta. The 2010 GT team will be stacked, and should be the best GT team since the 1990 National Championship team. UGA fans I think are resigning themselves to the fact that they are going to lose the next 2 in the series, and are grasping for every straw they can at this point. It will be 2010 before Mettenberger or Murray see the field, and you will have to deal with the growing pains associated with freshman QB’s. UGA might have a chance against GT in 2011 when Nesbitt, Dwyer and company leave, but Paul Johnson will be fully reloaded by then. It must really suck being a UGA fan right now.

The recruiting gurus don’t agree.

ESPN rates Will Jackson and David Sims as #1. Rivals says J.C. Lanier. Scout says Lanier, Luallen and Roderick Sweeting.

I’m beginning to like Lanier. I saw him as a junior twice, and frankly I thought he was too slow and didn’t hustle. As a senior, he dropped 20-25 pounds and was noticeably more agile. It’s a good sign when a guy gets in better shape BEFORE coming to college.

They guy mentions beating a few ranked teams…good gosh, how about winning ONE BCS bowl or winning your conference.

People say “we beat the best Georgia team EVER on paper”. That team was VERY good on offense but had a mediocre defense and we said it before the season began and that was before 3 starters were out for the year.

One year does not make a football program. Try beating Georgia a couple of times in a row or win a meaninful bowl.

Todd,

Thanks for your reports/updates. It’s ridiculous that people can hide behind their keyboards and throw insults at you but it probably makes them feel better about their pathetic lives.

See if you can get an explanation from Tech coaches on why they didn’t go after Cody Getz of Buford who would have been a perfect fit for this offense. Don’t give me the size thing because they already have Marcus Wright on their roster. Kelly Rhino was an outstanding PR for Tech as a little guy. Then there’s Trindon Holliday at LSU, in the NFL you’ve got M. Jones-Drew, Warrick Dunn, and D. Sproles. Getz was the best player in the Dome at the state finals.

Finally, I agree with a previous poster about Jemea Thomas. I saw him play against Buford and he’s a stud.

I won’t have a chance to talk w/ coaches any time soon, but Getz didn’t get much attention from any ACC/SEC schools. If you’re looking for a small guy, you should keep an eye on Jemea Thomas of Fitzgerald. He’ll probably wind up in the secondary, but I sensed listening to Tech coaches that they’ve very confident they’ve found a sleeper in him. He is one of the 4-5 most valuable high school players in the state. We’ll see how he does at the next level.

Buzzer: I think you misread the tone of my post. I was just giving Jemea another plug. I saw Cody play, and he was terrific, especially in the open field, but sometimes it’s hard to judge a player who is surrounded by that kind of talent. He’s going to get more open-field opportunities at Buford than anywhere else in the state.

I guess they are going to get a ring to celebrate the new Star Trek movie, The Varsity mustard color they wear on Saturdays and this nice little class that could…

Take it easy on the UGA fans. Urban Meyer has the SEC East on lockdown, and Tennessee is about to assume the #2 position in that division. Over the course of 1 year, UGA has gone from pre-season #1 in the country to 3rd place in the SEC East, and 2nd place in the State of Georgia. All of the Juco’s, non qualifiers, Hargrave and Georgia Military signees can’t help the slide.

David,

Tech’s shared national title is one of the biggest jokes in all of college football history. Colorado played 4 teams that year that finished in the top 12. Tech played 1 team in that finished in the top 12. Everyone knows that Colorado was the real champion that year since Tech played a high school schedule.

Minnesota Jacket,

Tech has lot over 30 kids to SEC schools this recruiting season. Would Tech recruit kids that couldn’t make the cut? Or are you just the typical, ignorant, bitter Tech fan that likes to call kids names when they turn you down? Get a life

Who are some of the Preferred Walk On’s for Tech?

By Shane

February 4, 2009 2:40 PM | Link to this

Simple: Ask any young man to walk around the Varsity parking lot campus and then to walk around Athens. Any rational and very understanding 17-18 year old kid would come to the same conclusion….how fast can I put on the red and the black…

By Shane

February 4, 2009 2:45 PM | Link to this

Bobby: I heard Amy Winehouse was a preferred walk on at Tech. She declined after she realized that the campus was NOT a rehab center after all…

“They tried to make me go to rehab….I said NO, NO, NO…”

You can walk around Athens and worry about getting popped in the keister by Michael Stipe or get to hang out with T.I. and Andre 3000 on the sidelines at GT. Talk about a no brainer for a 17-18 year old. Getting arrested for public intoxication is about all there is to do in Athens, not so in Atlanta.

Did any of you ever see a movie called ‘Much Ado About Nothing’? Probably not because it’s a pretty ‘chicky’ flick; however, that’s what all the Tech mess is about. They beat UGA this year. Congratulations.

LSU exposed them. Tech will finish 4th in the ACC next year. UGA will beat them 27 to 17 at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Richt Field. We will hear about how much more money their grads make out of college than our grads make. You will spot three, not the normal two, cute coeds on their campus. The Budweiser song will continue to play. The ACC championship will include V. Tech (sigh) and B. College (sigh), yet again, and the attendance will be somewhere in the ‘ballpark’ of 3,047 fans – 3,000 of those will be business tickets. The blue turf will be a very real possibility once again come December 20th….

Reality Bites… that’s another good flick.

Is Tech’s signing 14 in-state players significant? Johnson has signed more in-state players in his two classes than out-of-state. But the trned began in 2007, when Gailey got Morgan Burnett, Jonathan Dwyer and Roddy Jones. And Josh Nesbitt. Will this in-state class be stronger than that one?

Also, no one took a shot at naming Tech’s top recruit. I think Luallen is the most important one. Sounds like Tech’s class had good camaraderie and that he was the ringleader in that. I suspect Luallen was key in Stephen Hill’s decision to stay firm to Tech.

Voice of Reason:

You trash-talked Tech’s 1990 National Championship saying they played nobody and that Colorado was better. Please note the following facts:

  1. Tech beat Clemson which demolished Illinois in the Gator Bowl; IL beat Colorado.

  2. Tech beat #1 Virginia who then lost to the SEC Champ Tenn. in the Sugar Bowl by only 1 point even though the UVA QB, Shawn Moore had a severely injured throwing hand. Tenn. tied Colorado.

  3. Tech was the only undefeated team in the nation whereas Colorado lost 1 and tied 1.

  4. Colorado should have lost in the Orange Bowl were it not for the “phantom” clip that negated ND Rocket’s TD.

  5. In the Citrus Bowl, Tech slaughtered Nebraska which was #3 in the nation and was leading Nebraska 6-0 in the 4th Qtr.

  6. Tech beat the following teams that were ranked in the top 25 at some point during the season: South Carolina, Clemson, Virginia, Nebraska.

  7. Colorado needed 5 downs to beat Missouri; the officials were roundly condemned nationally.

  8. Regional bias esp. in the AP voting historically has hurt Southern teams as it hurt Georgia in 2007.

  9. Tech has won more National Championships than Georgia. Refer to:

Past Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I FBS) National Champions (formerly called Division I-A).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAADivisionI-Anationalfootball_championship

GT listed as NC in 1990, 1956, 1952, 1951, 1928, 1917 = 6 National Championships.

For all the ignorant Ga fans on this site,Tech may very well be passing Ga by. True, Tech has to win a few in a row in the series like they did with GO’L. But I feel very confident this staff will get the right kids for this system. Despite your very talented class last season, Tech did win. Trailed big at the half, but Tech won. Brag all you like. Your dominance is old news. This isn’t Chan’s team. It’s PJ’s. And you should be concerned. Very concerned. Tech has the ability and the right coaching staff to run off 5 wins in a row. Morenolovesu,

Into the ‘chick’ flicks are you? LOL

PJ has spent 13 months proving the ‘experts’ (and sidewalk fans) wrong. I wouldn’t bet against him now.

We heard the same ‘GT has been exposed’ nonsense after the UNC loss and GT bounced back nicely from that set-back. The LSU game will serve as a learning experience for our young players (just like the UNC and GardnerWebb games did). I wouldn’t put too much stock in one game (seems like I’ve heard that a few times from the UGAG faithful).

And, 45-42. Our offense will be back next year, how about yours?

Just to point to fact though look at POST recruitment class rankings. Dawgpound,

To better understand your logic I guess I need to put myself in the players shoes. So when Mark Richt and the players were walking off the field November 29th… When they LOST - what you’re telling me is they were probably saying to eachother “hey guys…we didn’t lose today!!…if lsu beats tech then that means we won..we beat tech!!” Is that what you’re saying? If that’s the case college football could get really complicated. So if you LOSE to a team…but another team beats that team you lost to…then in turn that means you BEAT the team you LOST to? What the hell kinda logic is that? If you’re an LSU fan you should rightfully talk trash. I get that. They killed tech in the bowl. And they’re welcome to talk trash. But your team was on the LOSING effort this year lil’ buddy. Your team LOST! And you are talking trash? About what? That your team was close to winning?? That they won 2 years ago? Put that in perspective for a little bit. Do you think Arizona Cardinal fans are talking sh*t to Steeler fans? In your eyes they might be if they beat a team that beat the steelers I guess….Good luck with that..

By Dawgpound = Not the Brightest

February 5, 2009 4:05 PM | Link to this

One more thing you f*cking moron - Quit bringing up the past. You lost THIS YEAR. I realize UGA has whooped tech many years in the past. I hear it all the time from dawg fans. But see, I’m one of those sports fans that likes to focus on what my team is doing right now. And RIGHT NOW…my team is building under a great coaching staff…AND…they WON their in state rivalry game this year. I can’t wait till UGA comes to Boddy Dodd next year minus:

Stafford Moreno MoMass Rashad Jones Asher Allen

Are you kidding me?!?! Those are all big time players UGA lost. Tech beat UGA with 16 outta 22 players being freshmen or sophmores. If you don’t think they’ll build on that and get better you are crazy. Good luck with Joe Cox. He might be good…but he’ll never be half as good as Stafford.

It’s all about production on the field. I don’t care if a team has “top 10” recruiting year after year. Doesn’t amount to a hill of beans if it doesn’t show. Just ask the folks at Notre Dame, Michigan, Auburn, and Tennessee. On the other hand I wonder what kind of stellar 4 and 5 star recruits Utah has been pulling in over the past few years. So to all you gaggers who buy-in to the recruiting hype, go plug your top 5 / top 10 recruiting classes into your fantasy league programs. I’ll be content to let the coaches do their job.

MN Jacket,

The myth about Tech fans that only exist on this blog, and other more lame boards, is hilarious. The majority of Tech students that start out majoring in Engineering end up switching over to the M-train. Yet in the same breath the bs excuse we read on here every year about why your attendance is God awful is because these same BUSINESS GRADS get these wonderful, high paying jobs straight out of college all over the world!! Give it a rest. No one believes the bs and there’s zero proof to back it up. The majority of your engineering graduates speak English as a second language, while all your business graduates are battling it out with UGA, State, Kennesaw, Emory, West GA. and Southern grads IN TOWN

Big MIKE,

As well you know, the Yechies were never excited about Hill. For starters, the douches don’t even know their own players, let alone any kids they’re signing right out of highschool. Second, they only got excited about him when they “thought” Johnson somehow “stole” a recruit from Richt. When in reality it was Richt taking Hill from Johnson, but letting his commitment go when he found out we got a real reciever with Brown.
