How long will it take?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This was supposed to be the manageable part of the schedule.
Somehow, Tech has gone 0-5 in the ACC, losing heartbreakers against UVA, Maryland, N.C. State and now B.C.
Duke was the only conference game in which Tech didn’t have a late lead.
Now the schedule gets tougher. First comes the trip to Clemson on Sunday. The Tigers are 16-1 and ranked No. 10.
Then Tech hosts Wake Forest, currently undefeated and ranked No. 1.
Then comes a trip to Florida State, which is 15-3 but definitely beatable.
Maryland (13-5) comes to AMC on Feb. 8. Another very winnable game.
Here is some of what CPH had to say after another bitter defeat:
“I feel bad for our players. It’s tough, obviously. This is not an enjoyable thing, but I really feel bad for them because they do come back with the right spirit and attitude every day…We know we can play with anybody in this league. It’s a matter of having something of value to show for it.”
Tuesday’s loss was a little different than the ones at Maryland and N.C. State, when Tech blew 10-point leads in the second half. This time it was the Jackets who stormed back from 14 down.
But they couldn’t overcome 20 turnovers and 6-of-24 shooting from 3-point range. In overtime, Lewis Clinch missed a three when Tech led by one. Moe Miller missed two threes with Tech down one. All were very good looks.
When do you think Tech will get its first ACC win?

The first ACC game win…may not be this year.
Had a good chance but squandered it with poor ball handling and a few missed free throws at the end. This game unfortunately was typical.
In-bounds still remains….I cannot explain it…..??!!

Well, let’s look at the bright side - at least they improved on free throw shooting. Maybe sometime before the end of the season, we’ll be able to address the turnover problem.

When will it come? Well, I wouldn’t bet a paycheck on it happening this year. With the talent we have coming in next year, we can probably expect better results, but without coaching changes (which probably won’t happen next year), no remarkable turnaround. I don’t see a meaningful change in results before a new head coach has had time to instill some discipline and recruit a class or two.

FSU “definitely beatable” at 15-3? Maryland at 13-5 a “very winnable” game? Since when does a 9-9 team (0-5 acc), with ZERO quality wins get to make that claim? Woulda, shoulda, coulda still abounds on the flats.

They will win a game when they can execute a half court offense. They can score when they put on a press. But when the game slows down into half court sets they struggle terribly. Look at the end game, BC’s point guard single handedly kept them in it by winding the clock down, getting Tech to switch defenders and taking him to the hoop. Same thing in OT. Tech by contrast has no idea what to do in their half court sets.

should have go to the big men in OT. Why shot an outside shot when BC can not handle Lawal or Aminu. At least they can go to the line. Slow down the game and give the ball to big men. Stop give the ball to #1 Shumpert, he is a freshmen. And Zach can not play the small forward. Give everyone a role and stick with it. BTW Clinch suck…how many times he got beat by BC guard. Share some of his minutes to Storr. At least he can play defend.

This isn’t all the coaches fault. It looks to me like the players just don’t seem to get it. They play lax and dig a hole then get hyper and crawl out, only to be too tired to finish.
It may be time to really shake things up. Start some other players.

It’s sad to see the best talent keep losing due to poor coaching and poor game plan. If we don’t change coaches the talent will wise up and quit coming except the one and done players who could care less about tech.

How long can the excuses for Hewitt continue? Injuries. Academic issues. Baloney! All schools have these issues, but some consistently win because they have adequate depth AND solid coaching. Not so at Tech. Yeah. Yeah. Good recruiting class, supposedly, but the result for recruiting comes 3 or 4 years down the line (when Favors will be long gone), not on paper before they set foot on the court. Get your head out of the sand, DRad, and get a new basketball coach.

I feel for CPH. I’m watching his hair get grayer every game. At the same time, I wonder what he is teaching, or how he is teaching it. I find the inability to inbound the ball to be incomprehensible. I am a former player, and I have coached at every level from first grade to JV. How is it that there seems to be only one inbounds play, and that always breaks down to the point that we fling the ball 50-60 feet into the backcourt every time? When is the last time GT got an open look on an inbounds play? I’m thinking maybe at the Final Four? The offense simply stinks. BC’s starting front court is sitting on the bench, all fouled out, and we can’t get Gawal or Aminu an inside shot? I don’t want to lose the recruiting class for next year, but when do you finally come to realize that either the man can’t teach, or he can’t teach these players? I just don’t know. When will we win again? I don’t know that either.

I did not miss a GT home game for over 30 years (was GT faculty so it was easy)and am a confirmed BBall junky… we are in real trouble and it will only get worse. I will not be one bit surprised to see recruits bail before they ever get here… it is obvious we have a coach who can’t coach… and shows zero emotion. Bobby was a fun and wonderful guy… he was so excited his mind went blank during games but you never doubted he loved the kids and their practices made them better… that is clearly not the case with Hewitt… he has to go NOW!

Toward the end of the game, I was hoping to make it into overtime because we should have had a huge advantage. What little height & bulk that BC had had fouled out of the game. Our one true advantage throughout the game was our size inside. This of course was negated throughout regulation by the plays and sets being run where our big men were in a better position to shoot 15 - 18 footers (which is definitely not their forte) than get rebounds or a 3 second call under the basket. They should have planted themselves in the paint all night especially in overtime when BC had a front line of 6’8”, 6’6” & 6’3”. Every possession should have been run through the post. I would have been happy with multiple 3 second calls because at least our big men would actually have been in the right position.

We have the worst coach in the ACC PERIOD!!!! Yes, he’s a good recruiter, but we got outcoached again! blowing 10 point leads with 4 mins left to sorry nc state teams. Having BC beat us with 3 starters on the bench. The team shoots an NCAA worst in free throws. This is the coach’s fault and not the players.

It was painfully noticeable that the fire and intensity that got Tech from so far down to OT, was missing in OT, from the first inbounds play.
Rice driving to the basket in OT repeatedly — where was the help to clog up the driving lanes?
When our big men get the ball under the basket and 3 BC players collapse on them, rarely, RARELY — do they recycle the ball to the top for another go around. But then, muscling the ball up for blocked shots or wild misses has been the story under the basket all season.

They have had the same problems for the past 9 years. Even in the run to the title game they still played terrible defense. They just had enough offense to make up for it and the ACC record that year was 9-7. Every game it’s bad, soft, switching man-to-man defense and poor execution in regards to anything on the offensive end. Hewitt shows no signs of adjustment in the game plans. After 9 years this is what we get. 0-16 in league play and a lot of lip service about “next year”. We always seem to have great recruits but never seem to win games consistantly. This problem will not go away while Hewitt is on the Flats. If he is still here in 3 years you can just repost this blog because it will still be accurate. 45- 42 THWG

Well, we’ve lost 4 games to teams we definitely have more talent than. Again, i’ve been a big Hewitt supporter but this one just sent me further down the path of thinking he needs to go.
Look, I understand that we have a freshman PG again, and a PG who really should be a #2 guard. Miller actually showed some flashes and made some nice feeds into the post, which Shumpert just doesn’t know how to do. I understand that we are going to have turnovers. I even understand a guy like Peacock just going braindead and throwing the ball to the other team by mistake. (of course I could have told you something like this was inevitable after watching him do similar things last year).
But for me, the thing that killed us which was definitely because of the coach was the defensive play at the end.
We know that the only player on the floor for BC that is going to take a shot is Rice, so why are we switching on the screens and not doubling him. Why would the smaller player originally guarding him not fight through the screen and stay on him instead of just switching off with Aminu. Or have him and Aminu double him to make him give the ball up??? That is just poor coaching that just about anybody with a little basketball IQ would see not to do.
ARRRGGGHHHH!! I love GT BBall but this is so frustrating to watch. I seriously was thinking that maybe we could turn the corner and get to playing some good ball and make a little run, but once again we blow a very winnable game by just being stupid.
0-16 is a definite possibility if trends continue. We will most likely not win a game on the road. But we should be able to at least beat Maryland and NCSU at home. That is unless stupidity continues to be our modus operandi.

Hey DRAD since you have not seen Ground Hog Day obviously, let’s jump forward to next year…
Sloppy play for the first half of the season. The team digs a hole. We finish 7-9 in the ACC only due to talent, ride the bubble, and get into the Big Dance. (We will be last in F/T% again).
The Big Dance…we might win the first round, but get bumped the second round by a less talented team.
Favors leaves, throw in Lawal, and maybe even Shumpert.

Seems like the players have lost the precision aspect of the game. I don’t know this, but I suspect that Paul does not preach a strict discipline of the game. His teams seem to be more freelance oriented. Although the freelance aspect probably helps with recruiting, it doesn’t win close game or games where the ball is not falling your way. Paul has lost several of the coaches he brought with him when he started at Tech. I suspect that in the past there was a good cop / bad cop coach(s) that focused more on the discipline within the game. High turnovers and poor free throw percentage does not allow much wiggle room. Paul, you need to get a sergeant back in the fold

I said it on a blog yesterday. GT has nobody that can handle Rice. Hate to say Rice proved that correct and basically he beat us one-on-one in overtime. He is simply a very gifted player.
When you continue to turn the ball over 20+ times every game you will beat nobody. Nobody. Regardless of coaching.
However when you are up 3 in OT it is beyond me why you don’t play for the inside shots when there is a huge advantage there. We missed 2 threes and they converted them into 4 points on teh other end. That and two critical turnovers and there is your ball game.
Nobody in the ACC is beating GT. They are simply beating themselves. That is obvious. Every team is beatable in the ACC. If GT is the worst and Wake the best I contend the gap is very small between top and bottom. GT could very easily be 5-0 but continue to throw the ball away repeatedly and miss free throws and a record setting level.
I remember not too long ago that GT went 0-8 and finished 8-0. That is not inconceivable with this team as long as they protect the ball. Shumpert and Miller are getting better at guard play and we have a strong inside game. This team misses Bell badly. Real badly. I mean REAL BADLY!
You people can biatch all you want but Hewitt is going nowhere. Hewitt is a great recruiter and solid coach. Trust me you don’t want to see this team if Hewitt leaves. Recruits will leave with him. The GT program is on solid ground. Certainly 0-5 isn’t satisfying but that will change. If they can pick up 4-5 wins the rest of the way then that will be a good finish with a highly ranked team next year pre-season looming.
Rock on….go JACKETS

Those asking for Hewitt’s head need to look at our talent. I hate using the injury excuse, but lets be logical. How many college programs are there with a freshman point guard. Along with that, how much talent do we actually have. For as good as our big men are, they aren’t that great. I am shocked by what they do.
I don’t care how much Hewitt teaches them, they are still young and make stupid choices. Is it Hewitt’s fault that Shumphert (sp?) carries the ball at least 3 times a game. Is it Hewitt’s fault that he has had to put Shump at the point for most of the year. Get some basketball knowledge and watch these players. There is some talent, but they aren’t that good. The fact that they compete with teams from the best conference in the country shocks me!

Please stop talking about our talent. It is not very good. There is not one player on our entire squad that could start for NC, Duke, Wake and most other ACC teams. Also, stop this great recruiter crap. Unless I am missing someone Chris Bosh is the only Hewitt player who has done well in the NBA. He cannot coach, cannot recruit players that will play as a team and cannot recruit players that do well academically. Check his Academic Progress Rating (APR) against the other ACC coaches.

Next two games are against Clemson and Wake. If anyone thinks this team can beat either of two, he or she’s being delusional. That brings Maryland at AMC to be the first ACC game Tech may have a chance of winning. I see this team winning 2 or 3 games at the end unless Hewitt’s coaching philosophy and discipline change.
I personally love Paul Hewitt as a human being. He’s a class act and has done very nice things that haven’t been reported in the media. And he and his assistants are great recruiters. But he’s not a great head coach. Judging by recent blogs, a lot of people have been realizing that. His Final Four run has fooled so many people for so long. I’m sure next year would be his final chance. I just hope they don’t accidently do well with Favors and Hewitt gets another 5 or 6 year extension.

GT66, I completely disagree on Tech’s talent. This team still has 3 top 20 from their class in Clinch, Gani, and Shumpert according to Scout.com. Clinch just screwed himself up by becoming accademically ineligible TWICE! Gani was once projected to be a lottery pick in 2009 NBA draft. He’d start anywhere except UNC. Well, that’s not true. He can start over Thompson easily. Shumpert was getting recruited by UNC too. I seriously doubt Roy would waste time recruiting him unless he’s talented. Currently, there are 9 former Tech players in the NBA, which is 6th most from any school. And 7 of them played for Hewitt. You’re right that Bosh is the only one that stands out. 7 is still remarkable.
I completely agree on the coaching inneptitude of Hewitt. With this much talent, they should be at least 500 team. He’s a talent killer. That’s what kills me. If Tech has no talent, I could just say this is a weak team that has no chance of playing competitive ball against good ACC teams. It’s clear that Coach Hewitt can’t guide these young kids to become a winning basketball team.

CanHewitt I guess we will agree to disagree. I do not care what the rating services say. I believe just watching is a far better yardstick. Lawal had 7 turnovers last night and no assists. Roy, Coach K and the new Wake coach would never start any of our guys including Lawal. The fact that there are 7 Hewitt players in the NBA does not mean beans. Most of them ride the pines. None of them averages better than single digits in points and minuted other than Bosh. There are at least two Jackasses blogging under other peoples names, mine included. Ramble On I certainly realize that Roy, Coach K and many other coaches would get much more out of the players we have and I have been saying for the last two years what a lousy coach Hewitt is. My point is that I still believe that some of our fans are overrating the players we now have. I would like to see some evidence that NC and Duke tried to actually recruit any of these players including Lawal. I could be wrong, but I never read where they actually went after any of our players.

I hear ya GT66…I think 75% of our fans want Hewitt gone yesterday, and if that means we lose next years class, so be it.

RAMBLE ON - I want Hewitt gone as much as anybody but to declare him worse than Bill Lewis - man, that’s cold.
Be careful, comments like that might cause “m” to crank up the Greyhound.

Lets see, we will be in a situation where we won’t be able to get the ball in bounded, we will be in a situation where a free throw will win the game, we will be in a situation where the ball will unexpectedly bounce towards us and bounce off our heads, we will be in a situation where while watching Hewitt signal a play in the opponent steals the ball from us. It goes on and on. I would rather come watch a practice than a game right now and see what is being done different at Hewitt’s practices than almost any team in the country and why he stubbornly shows up unimproved every game. You would think the practice from playing actual games would make them improve some, just being on the court with someone else that actually understands how to play the game would surely rub off. Maybe one of the benchwarmers may pick up something he could pass on as knowledge, or one of the cheerleaders. Keep you eyes pealed maybe one of the other teams inbound plays might be the very thing we need to win a game or we might see a dribble that works or hands that catch, and Lord we might get our eyes fixed and actually see the basket when we shoot.

Thanks Ramble On. I totally agree. The recruiting class should not matter as the health of the program is the most important thing. Speaking of outstanding young or new head coaches our fans just need to look at what the Xavier and Wake Forest coaches are doing. The Xavier coach has a very high APR as well. There was a great article in the USA Today yesterday about the APRs of the coaches in the Top 25. The NCAA’s passing-grade benchmark is a score of 925. For those who are not familiar with it the APR stands for Academic Progress Rate. 19 of the Top 25 teams had coaches with APRs above 928. It will come as no surprise to anyone I am confident that the best teams have coaches who do not sign unqualified players. Here are the top 9 coaches and their APR. Roy Williams North Carolina 995, Jay Wright Villanova 990, Mike Krzyzewski 984, Sean Miller Xavier 976, Mike Brey Notre Dame 971, Ben Howland UCLA 968, Tom Izzo Michigan State 963, Jim Boeheim Syracuse 955 and Herb Sendek Arizona State 952. This just further illustrates that you can have a very successful program and recruit players who are not dumb dumbs. Some of the other coaches who are above 925 include Jeff Capel Oklahoma, John Thompson Georgetown, Jim Calhoun UConn, Tubby Smith Minnesota, Rick Pitino Louisville, Randy Bennett St. Mary’s, Jamie Dixon Pittsburgh, John Beilein Michigan, Rick Barnes Texas and Scott Drew Baylor. Dino Gaudio the new Wake Forest coach is only in his first season and therefore does not have an APR yet. He is obviously a pretty darn good coach.

Love the comments…next year 90 % of you will be kclaiming you were always behind Hewitt who are screaming for his departure today. The talent isn’t there. Period. The guard play is average at best. Shumpert will improve, but Clinch and Storrs are the same player. Both one dimensional, neither can play defense. Both play hard, but get lost on the court and don’t have the skills to cover good ACC players. Aminu, Peacock and Lawal are limited defensively. All are excellent rebounders, but are slow to the spot when a guard penetrates. Defense wins games when you have good outside shooters. Though Tech has its’ moments hitting 3’s, none of the shooters are consistent. This team lost Morrow, Smith and Causey. Did you really think they would be good this year , especially when Dickey left and Bell had to sit? Lawal has a tremendous upside and I hope he stays next year for HIS and Tech’s sake. With Favors and Holsey, Lawal will become a top 15 pick easily. Miller has been hurt( have ANY of you EVER played with a broken facial bone??) but he will need to step it up. Udofia will pass him and he may leave. In fact, Shumpert will be off guard next year and Tech will be much better in backcourt without Clinch. With a rotation of Shumpert, Bell ( he will be back, best defender by far), Udofia and either Miller or Storrs, Tech will be a top 4 ACC team at least. …this team just doesn’t have the talent. They play hard, but don’t have the talent to finish. No matter how hard you coach a team, you can’t make up for incredibly stupid plays in clutch situations by your upperclassmen. I understand the anger you are feeling and it’s gotten to the point that I don’t care if I watch this team again this year. This is from someone who has not missed more than 10 games since 1983 either live, on TV or radio/internet. But this year is an abomination. What you should hope is that they play hard every week, players like Shumpert, Lawal and Miller improve and despite a horrid W-L, Tech gets enough out of this year for a big run in 2010. Look at Wake…huge recruiting class, awful season last year…and they are number one nationally. Tech;’s class next year is better than Wake’s this year. Keep that in mind. This year will be the worst since 97 and perhaps as bad as Morrison’s 0-14. But there is hope…have patience. BTW, Baseball starts in a few weeks. That team will make you proud.

Bill, WF HC died of a Heart Attack the year before also.
I’ve watch since the days of Dwayne Morrison, Tico Brown, Lenny Horton, Sammy Drummer, Brooke Steppe, Lee Goza, etc…And I also haven’t missed many games either.
Hewitt has had plenty of talent in these 9 years with nothing to show for it except one good year, and we still didn’t win the ACC.
No Championships, period.
Here we are winless in the ACC and that was the weak part of the schedule.
Talent? Chris Bosh, we couldn’t go dancing with him. Mario West and Anthony Marrow are playing in the NBA. West barely made the team and didn’t start. Marrow is lighting it up and everybody is wondering. Where did this guy come from?
Basically with those two and Crittenton and Moore, that’s 4 out of 5 players on one team in the NBA and we didn’t even make NCAA’s.

Drad is the man. He couldn’t say what he wanted to yesterday.
We’re paying Gailey 2 mil, CPJ 2mil, and we can’t afford to pay Hewitt the buyout plus a new coach.
But we can get somebody for 200K, and he’ll be better than Hewitt.
One last thing, Bill, I hope I’m eating crow this time next year, but I said that last year, and the year before.
If the problem is talent, whose fault is that?

I have 4 season tix at Alex. Col. that will not be renewed. Had them for years, but no more. I will not be exasperated any further by watching this mess in person, or on tv. I’ll keep my football tix, because there is hope. There is no hope with this mess, until the coaching and maybe some players change. Until then, I could give a s—- less!!

I appreciate most of the replies. I disagree with you. If Hewitt screws up next year, I’ll join you. As far as “UGa is so last year“‘s comment, I think your head is up your rear… Ramble On, just so you know ,I think you are referring to Thaddeus Young from 2 years ago, not Moore. The most recent Moore, Clarence, was on the Final four team. Morrow is playing with Golden state and is contributing. But not really lighting up avg 9 PPG playing 19 minutes. Skip Prosser passed as Wake’s coach, but that doesn’t change the fact that Gaudio’s Wake team was 7-9 and Tech’s incoming class is considered better than this year’s that is undefeated going into tonight. ….think some of you just hate Hewitt. The BCA thing adds to your dislike. You think Tech is on par with UNC and Duke as far as replacing one year kids that bolt for the NBA. Very few schools can see kids leave early and still win at a high level.Kids leave early now because of the money…you would , too. For God’s Sake, Bosh and Nelson left and Hewitt took this team to the NC game the next YEAR! Crit and Young left AFTER Hewitt put together what turned out to be the toughest in CBB. The talent level isn’t there this year. It will be next year . …OMT..if Hewiit is fired, better be prepared to see this class leave for other schools. Tech will be horrible for 2-3 years. Of course, you will hate the next coach , too.

It is the watching of this team that tears you up. They are totally confused. I have never seen a team this clueless of what they are to do next. The amazing thing is team after team come into our place with a mental edges over us. It is not far from the days of pre ACC at Tech. In those days we played maybe one or two top ranked teams like North Carolina and when we did the difference of royalty and the basement of college basketball was a grand distance away from each other. I often wondered what those visiting teams thought of us if anything as they dressed and left our campus, heading back to where basketball was really played. It must have been like playing a third world country that just didn’t have the material to partcipate. They must have wondered why we even had a team. Since those days we have been able to represent ourselves better. Not until this team in this year have I ever looked back. This team must leave the visiting teams really scratching there head if they even take notice. It has been a long time since we have not even been noticed, like I think we played Georgia Tech last year but I can’t remember.

Not being a big basketball fan, but a Tech fan, I find it amusing that when a team is struggling be it basketball or football, the first thing fans want to do is run the coach off.
Paul Hewitt is an excellent coach. The good teams of several years ago seem to be forgetten.
Until Tech’s basketball team stops the stupid turnovers, and learns how to shoot freethrows, they will continue to struggle this year. Look at the last 5 games they have lost. Turnovers and poor freethow shooting cost them the games. You can work on freethrow shooting in practice, but you can’t control dumb turnovers. This team is like a lot of the past Tech teams, they seem to have no chemistry playing together. It will get better, it can’t get any worse.

Bill I have corrected statements in the past about Nelson. He did not leave voluntarily, he was run off just like Hewitt did to Zam Frederick who last night led South Carolina’s upset of Florida by scoring 15 points and the winning basket. Ramblinman you must be smoking something. Calling Hewitt an excellent coach is insane. The only measure is his record and he has a big losing record. Case closed.

Down 14 we press until we tie, call off the press. Fall down again, press until we tie, call off the press. At the end of regulation tied with the ball we shoot with 22 SECONDS left?
Bobby C would never substitute and the players would tire into errors. Paul H subs so often no one can get into rhythm. It’s like watching rec league where the parents pay a fee and expect playing time for their kids.
And, why does he call timeout every time we get momentum?
