Duke on deck
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hello, all-
I’ll toss a few things at you about the Maryland game and the Duke game coming up Wednesday. First, I asked Gani Lawal about Maryland. He said that the team did some things well defensively, but it was the turnovers that killed them. He also said that the team failed to throw “a knockout punch” in the second half. Tech, if you’ll remember, had a 10-point lead in the second half but squandered it.
“We were on the brink of breaking it open into a 10, 11-point lead, really spreading it open, really making it a route, we’ll throw the ball away or we’ll come down and rush the shot,” he said. “Those are the types of things that, if we want to be the type of team that advances in the future, especially come March, we have to do it, especially playing in the ACC. Because everything is so critical. It makes me mad all over again just thinking about it.”
Paul Hewitt said that Zachery Peacock missed the game because of severe indigestion. He said Peacock woke up early Saturday with sharp stomach pains. He was in the training room for the first half, but was taken to a hospital at halftime and stayed overnight in Maryland. He flew back Sunday with team trainer Richard Stewart.
He’s expected to play against Duke.
I asked Mike Krzyzewski Monday on the teleconference about Tech’s problems shooting from three-point range (28.9 percent). (I’m writing a story for Wednesday about the Jackets’ shooting.) Perhaps not surprisingly, he veered completely away from the question about what he saw in Tech’s shooting woes.
“What I see with them is how many offensive rebounds they’ve gotten. I think a missed shot for them is actually a part of their offense. They have those three big kids that go to the boards and do such a terrific job on the boards. I think they’re one of the best rebounding teams in the country.”
Which you could also take to mean, They don’t shoot particularly well, but you’re not going to get me to say it.
Hewitt’s take on Duke: “They just play the style of play that they play every year. They’re very aggressive. They try to deny your wing. They force a lot of turnovers. They’re switching ball screens a lot more than I remember in the past.”
Given Tech’s problems with turning the ball over thus far, this isn’t a very strong matchup for the Jackets, you’d have to say. Duke gave up just 14 points in the first half of their last game against Florida State (although the Devils only scored 19). In terms of getting the ball in the post, shooting from three-point range and not turning it over, you’d have to think Tech is going to have to play its best game by a wide margin to have a chance.
What sort of chance do you give Tech in this game, and what has to happen?
(This is totally unrelated, but the athletics department should be firming up its season-ticket pricing for football for 2009 soon. We’ll try to get that as soon as we can. Apparently, prices won’t move much, if they do.)

Sad to say but I would be surprised if this game isn’t an old fashioned Duke whipping we have always received. Only a few Tech teams have ever even been able to compete with them in the past and this team falls for sure in line with the ones that cannot.

Season ticket holder, followed the Jackets since the Mark Price days.
Easy enough questions.
What sort of chance? Zero to none.
What has to happen? A coaching change.

Ken:
If your research on the poor 3-point shooting allows it, I’d be interested to see how other teams 3 point shooting percentage fairs against Tech compared to their overall average. It just seems to me that Hewitt teams have rarely shot it well and never have defended it well. I know Virginia was one of the worst in the conference and they lit us up.
As far as Duke, we may surprise everyone and come out and play them tough, but I just don’t see it. Unlike Maryland, Duke has the ability to really make you pay during lapses. Tech has had lapses in pretty much every game this year ( maybe not all of the breathers, but the teams of comparable talent levels). I fear this team is quickly heading from struggling to totally dejected and quitting on the season. Hate to be so pessimistic, but the Maryland game was the time to show that was not the case and they failed miserably.

I think after Duke beats us by 30 points, DRAD will go ahead and pull the trigger on Hewitt.
If we lose in the last few seconds, due to missed F/T’s, can’t inbound the ball, or throw another air ball instead of calling a timeout (if we have any), he’ll wait till the end of the year.
Since GT Basketball is still Groundhog Day, this is going to be like the UNC game last year. Tough loss, Hewitt’s proud of the effort and the fact we shot 70% from the free throw line. He thinks we can make a run for the bubble.
Coach K has already chalked this one up in the win column. His strategy is foul everyone hard, and put them on the line.

IT IS TIME TO FIRE PAUL HEWITT. PUT HIM OUT ON HIS REAR END. SAME THING EVERY YEAR (EXCEPT ONE).
OUR PLAYERS ARE NOT COACHED ON FUNDAMENTALS. OUR TEAM IS EMBARASSING TO WATCH.
IF YOU WANT TO SEE A BASKETBALL TEAM ON PAR WITH TECH, HEAD DOWN TO YOUR LOCAL PLAYGROUND OR YMCA AND WATCH A PICKUP GAME. ACTUALLY, THOSE GUYS WOULD SCHOOL HEWITT’S TEAM.

Any time an opposing coach is having to scramble desperately for compliments like “I think a missed shot for them is actually a part of their offense,” you know you’re talking about a very, very deeply flawed team.

I expect this to be THE game that gets Hewitt fired. Probably the most well-coached, fundamentally sound team we will play will make Hewitt’s group look like they were 5 guys picked out of the crowd to play.

Coach K must go through the same hype he did when they played Presbyterian College earlier this year. You look long and hard for a plus to say like in PCs case it is good to be short and slow people will bond with you better or in GT’s case it is good to miss shots since your best offense is putting your rebounds back into the basket. I am willing to bet you Georgia Tech gives itself more opportunity than anyone in the country to be number one in rebounding, because they miss more shots than anyone in the country, even from the charity line. They also have more balls that bounce off their head, arms and body than any team on earth. Oh yeah Coach D knows a rebounding team when he sees one and he is so glad they have these chumps in the ACC.

We will lose by 65 and have 42 turnovers. Or else we’ll win. It’s that simple.
Unfortunately, even if the former happens, Hewitt is untouchable for this year and next because of next year’s recruiting class. However, if we get a Top 10 class and still underachieve, then he gets the ax at the end of next year….maybe.
Misery until 2010 at least.

I am a GT fan, and I am disappointed by our basketball program the last few years.
I anticipate that we will miss too many free throws, miss too many 3 pointers (since we shoot such a bad percentage, we should pound the ball inside), and turn the ball over. But we will play well (enough) in stretches, and then fall apart down the strecth.

Just because i say that theres no doubt that the average white player is a much better shooter and smarter player (less turnovers) than the average black player, dosent mean i dont like black people!!
How is that a racist statement? if so… is it not just as racist to say the average black player can dunk better than the average white player? when do we start putting fears of name calling aside.. and just let facts be facts!?

Dear Mr Favors, we fans of GT hoops hope that you choose to come to GT and help form one of the best frontcourts in the NATION with Lawal. We trust that Hewitt will do the right thing if you sign, and get fresh blood among the assistants. And work to decrease turnovers and improve free throw shooting.
If you go to NC state (2 far away) or UGA (football fans, not basketball fans), you will quickly be forgotten about locally. But if you choose GT…you will never be forgotten in Atlanta, and you will be among a long line of great players to have put on a GT jersey. Favors… the next Chris Bosh!!

Can someone ban BravesFan79? His comments are not only irrelavant but border line hate speech.
Good recruiting class or no, this has to be Hewitt’s last year.
Prediction - Duke blows it open in the first 4 minutes (10 point lead). We trim it to single digits heading into half time and then get blown off our rocker coming out of the locker room. Any thing less than a 20 point loss would be staggering.
There is no reason to think that an undisciplined, turnover prone team who cannot shoot is going to even be competitive against Duke or any other of the other 313 D1 teams.
Can’t wait to play Wake and UNC too.

I don’t think BravesFan79’s comments are racist. I think it’s more likely that these days you can’t say anything derogotory about anyone race, unless it’s about white folks. What he said is fundamentally true. On average, white kids aren’t as good of jumpers…so they end up shooting more and being better set shooters…similiarly black kids ON AVERAGE usually have better hops and thus they practice dunking. It’s not a ‘racist’ thing to say. The irony is, if the roles were reversed, the white kids would be dunking too…because that’s what girls and sports center want to see.
There are exceptions to every rule; however, steriotypes exsist for a reason…because your personal experiences have shown you patterns. Again…there ARE exceptions to every rule…but there is a lot of truth in ‘the rule of thumb’ also.
I moved from ATL and it’s a JOKE of a city, because it’s so hyper sensitive that you can’t just have an honest conversation without someone calling someone a racist. WHen I lived there I found there were a lot more reverse racists than traditional…another irony.
As for the BBall team. They have lacked smart basketball minds and quickness under Hewitt’s stewardship. It is what it is. He isnt’ a good coach, however he is a great recruiter of all positions but Center and Point Guard. It is what it is. Calling it like you see it will get you called a racist in ATL…the city too busy to allow people to have honest conversations.

Hewitt is definately a nice guy. He seems to run a clean program. I think him being a nice guy, good recruiter (sans quick guards can shoot and play defense) has bought him as much time as he has gotten. The fact that we see the same inexcusable problems year after year is what will get him fired eventually. We never seem to be quick enough to stop dribble penetration…or to dribble penetrate and dish to the open guy…or to get into the flow of our offense consistently…or to inbound the ball…these are all very fundamental and important things that year after year are absent.

I had floor passes for the GT - NC ACC championship with Mark Price playing guard. I sat close enough to Dean Smith to reach over and shake hands. Mark Price was my daughter’s hero. They found out what his dad’s name was and her girlfriend and her called his house (getting number from information) in Enid, OK. They were talking to his mom about his brother who was 12 at the time and went on to play for S.C. His mom was very nice and talked to her for around 15 minutes. I was pretty mad and her and her girlfriend for bothering the Mrs. Price. We went to a lots of games when Mark played … even met Buzz one nite after the game. BUT, this doesn’t mean Mark would make a good coach, altho I am hoping he will. He has NO head coaching experience. If they get rid of Hewitt, I wouldn’t mind having the guard that coach with coach K at Duke, then left and has been head coach at a couple of colleges. His name slips my mind. I am a big Tech fan and have been following them since Rich Yunkus played there.

It is obvious by now that Paul Hewitt can recruit. It is also obvious by now that Paul Hewitt cannot get his recruits to play as a team. Also, his teams are no good at executing fundamentals. If we continue with the same coaching and recruiting guess what! The results will be the same. Better recruiting will not solve fundamental issues. It is time for a coaching change.

Thanks gatech92 for your comments above about ATL reverse racism.
Take a look at the number of white, good-free-throw-shooting, good dribbling, good-passing players Hewitt has recruited (or even attempted to recruit) since taking the helm @ GA Tech basketball.
Remember Ed Nelson?? He was ACC Rookie of the Year, and then transferred when he quickly realized he wasn’t gonna get any playing time. Clearly, a big part of this was because Chris Bosh came in the year after Nelson … but Nelson’s quick departure sure does linger as a ?? about Hewitt’s willingness to recruit and/or play talented white ballplayers.
If these statements make me a racist, sobeit … I guess I’m a racist. Just stating the facts people.

And another issue:
If you’ve listened to Paul Hewitt’s interviews of late, he’s talked about the recruiting system “being what it is” and just having to work through it. Specifically, this was his answer to questions about players leaving early for the NBA.
WRONG, PAUL … WRONG. A WINNING coach finds a way to get players on board that will be AS committed to the school/team as the school/team was to them when it granted them a full scholarship to be a STUDENT/ATHLETE.
Hewitt needs to revise his “living room speech” with these kids to ensure that, if given a scholarship to STUDY/PLAY @ GA Tech, they are gonna stay and be committed to the success of the team … rather than continuing to use GA Tech basketball as a quick media highlight and then a bolt to the NBA.
Its a tiresome repetition year-after-year with this crap, and the buck stops at COACH PAUL HEWITT.

Hewitt should have already been fired, but I agree now that we must get this class signed before we fire Hewitt. Whether we like it or not, we need to give him one more year. If this talent underachieves because of his coaching (and history says it will), then hopefully DRAD will already have a plan with a coach that could come in with some talent and have a fairly smooth transition.
Trust me! I don’t want to give him another year; it is hard to watch this mess. I see high school teams every night (including girls teams) that play better fundamental basketball and SHOOT BETTER!! Truth be told, I’m 45 and can shoot outside better than these guys!
Anyway, I will try not to care this year, which is very hard because I have been a fan since 1982, my first year at Tech. If I care, I will allow it to bother me too much. I am amazed that players are still wanting to play for Hewitt when they watch on T.V. the team I have been seeing for the last 3-4 yrs. It is SAD, SAD, SAD!!!

For the record, I really don’t care what color players we recruit. My biggest issue is how often we go for the tall point guard, who is often more like a 2 guard. I like small/quick/tough/true point guards. Tall guys look good getting off the bus, but they can’t keep the smaller guys in front of them, so we get broken down…they pass to the open guy (true point)…open guy hits the shot…offense looks easy. Kenny Anderson was my favorite ever, not the huge pg body, but a REAL PG. Bobby Hurley, it’s all good…get us some true point guards and stack them deep.
It keeps dribble penetration at bay…and helps us get into our offense with our own dribble penetration.

We have a slim chance tonight. More TO’s than shots made, like at Maryland, is not a good formula for winning. Cut down the TO’s, keep playing hard defense for 40 minutes and anything is possible.

There are dangerous places in every big city that makes being a different color/nationality a hazardous situation. But to make a uniform statement about South Africa, you come off sounding like a cartoon racist. By your logic, blacks are always carjackers. Your very comments show you have spent little or no time in your life around any minority except enough time to discover they are different than you. This is the same crap that starts feeding fear that breeds hatred and ultimately death. I had German relatives killed by the Nazi’s because they were Catholic. I have seen this many, many times before in different flavors. For your sake, I hope you honestly do see the truth before you die one day because right now you are as blind as a bat when it comes to seeing who is decent and who is dangerous…btw, did you mind that racist Hewitt when he made the Final Four with Jack, Elder etc?
