The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
At noon Saturday, Tech will try to break a six-game losing streak in its series with Maryland.
Tech will be facing an angry and embarrassed group of Terps: they’re coming off a 66-65 home loss to Morgan State.
It’s the Terps’ ACC opener. The Jackets are 0-1. And with No. 2 Duke coming to town next Wednesday, Tech needs this road win.
Tech was picked eighth in the preseason poll, Maryland seventh.
Maryland is a quick, perimeter-oriented team that had been a pleasant surprise until Wednesday’s loss. Patrick Stevens, the Maryland beat writer for the Washington Times, answered some questions about the matchup:
What are the biggest reasons for Maryland’s strong start?
Up until Wednesday night’s loss to Morgan State —- Maryland’s first to an in-state opponent since 1989 —- I’d say most people would agree the Terps were a little bit further ahead than anticipated.
Maryland’s 11-3 record is a product of good ball movement, crisp passing, smart shot selection and sound defense. All but the defense went AWOL the other night.
Gary Williams knew he had three reasonably sure things coming into the season —- guards Eric Hayes and Greivis Vasquez, and forward Landon Milbourne (who is playing the four this season after starting at small forward last year). The emergence of guard Adrian Bowie and forward Dave Neal has filled in the gaps.
Bowie is a strong, left-handed slasher who has run the point for much of the season and might be the most fun player to watch on the roster. Neal doesn’t look the part of an effective starter, and Williams ribs him about his “YMCA moves” like a step-back jumper and an underhanded scoop shot. But it’s worked well so far.
Who will match up with Tech leading scorer Gani Lawal? Will the Terps double-team him a lot?
The question of the day in College Park. It’s no secret the Terps are undersized, and an injury to Jerome Burney (stress fracture-right foot) hasn’t helped matters. Maryland was devoured the two times it played teams with significant size (Gonzaga and Georgetown), and Morgan State had an effective bruiser as well.
The guess here is Maryland will use everyone inside a little to contain Lawal —- Dino Gregory, Landon Milbourne, Dave Neal, Braxton Dupree —- and I would neither count out nor bank on a double team. It’s not exactly something the Terps are skilled at just yet.
The interior defense will very much be on the spot on Saturday. If it holds up, at least Maryland will have something good to go with entering the rest of league play. If not, fans’ suspicions the Terps will get steamrolled inside against ACC opponents will only grow larger.
How has Maryland handled defensive pressure?
That hasn’t been a problem so far. Maryland hadn’t committed more than 16 turnovers before Wednesday night, and even then it was more because of the Terps’ bad decisions than any sort of press Morgan State deployed.
By comparison, Maryland had nine 18+ turnover games when ACC play resumed in January 2008.
That might not be much to go on, and I would suspect based on the recent past that the Terps could struggle with ballhandling against Georgia Tech (season-high 24 turnovers last season vs. GT, an average of 23.3 in three games in 2006). But the press itself isn’t an issue so far this season.
So, what’s your prediction for Tech-Maryland, and why?

My prediction is that Tech will bring a sloppy, undisciplined, poorly coached team to the floor. They will fall behind early due to lack of aggressive defense. They will rally in the second half on the strength of a full-court press and briefly look like world beaters. Ultimately, their comeback will fall short and they will lose.
Wow, I should just cut and paste that prediction into the rest of the games this season.

I wonder if PH has read Observer and Ramble On!!!. That about sums it up.
The problem is that we have a great recruiting class coming in next year, and it could become stellar if Favors signs. My fear is that it will only make it harder to fire PH.

How about Tommy Amaker from Harvard?
He just spanked B.C. and played in the ACC at Duke.
Then we got Tubby Smith, I bet we could get him, or even Mark Price.
All of these apologist for Hewitt, ask the question who could we get?
I think those are 3 pretty good options.

ok guys, i have something to admitt. as you all have probably guessed. no, i’m not a tech fan. i’m a uga loser. and yes, i’m very upset about the loss to tech this year. 45-42 keeps running through my brain. also 67-62 keeps tugging at my heart strings as well recently. i come on your blogs and talk about “tickle piles” and things of that nature because it makes me feel better. my team couldn’t get it done on the field or basketball court this year and the only thing that makes me feel better is trying to come up with tickle pile jokes to get at you people. i wish i could come up with new material but it’s tough these days. with my team being the losers that they are i just can come up with anything good to say about UGAy. staffy hurt my heart really bad cause i hate seeing such a stud leave. and knowshon…well i dont know if you guys know this…. but he hurdled over a CENTRAL MICHIGAN player!!!! it was amazing..and i sided with coach spray tan..uh…i mean coach richt..that clip should have been on sportscenter. anyways, glad i got all that off my big gay chest….now back to thinking about 409 rushing yards and how much i hate willie martinez and more tickle pile jokes to make me feel better about my team being second best in football and basketball…bye fellas

I predict we will come out flat and have to call a timeout before 18:00 hits the game clock. After that, we’ll muddle along until Maryland goes on a 12-2 run before the 8:00 mark. We’ll continue to muddle through the first half and go to the lockerroom down by 15.
In the second half, the muddling will continue, with a few wideopen dunks made by both teams. We’ll trail by 8 to 14 points until 9 or 10 minutes left. Then, we’ll put on the full court press, get some turnovers and make it a close and exicting finish. We lose 70-65 when Maryland ices it at the line. The box score shows Maryland has its highest percentage 3-point shooting in five years, mostly because Tech never bothered to defend it.
Next day, AJC will report that Tech is still working to find itself on offense and are looking for a consistent 40 minutes of effort. The bright spot will be how Tech closed a double digit deficit over the last 10 minutes and what that might lead to in the future.
Can’t wait to watch tomorrows game.

Remember when fans were loyal outside of fair weather? Why is it that we, as a fanbase and alums, think we can get to be a top academic school and Standout Athletic Program year in and year out in both major D1 Sports? We had a bad coach in Chan Gailey - I agree - but Paul Hewitt has done a lot with what he has. He won’t admit it, but our stringent academic reputation makes recruiting hard and since Jarret Jack we haven’t had a returning PG! Mo was - until he got hurt - our first chance to see Hewitt work with an installed offense. How about we look at the record we had, before Mo got hurt, and focus on supporting the team?! Soon we will be able to see the return of Mo and have Clinch back in the line up - then after the season make a judgment on the quality of coaching.. And so help me - if you buy tickets to come to our games and plan on leaving early - sell them to a real fan.. You people leaving hurts us in recruiting and is equally rude AND disrespectful to the players and REAL Fans!

Remember when you couldn’t buy a ticket to a Tech basketball game? Now they offer a package of ACC games only-how fair is that to loyal Jacket fans who buy season tickets to see Arkansas Pine Bluff! How many years has Hewitt been here…9?? It’s been nothing but downhill since the first two years (with Cremin’s guys). No offense, can’t bring the ball inbounds, can’t shoot free throws. I feel for the guys like Lawal with talent who don’t get the opportunity to improve their talent in college. To beat Tech all you have to do is have 3 guys lay back in the post and wait and the other two guys hound the guy with the ball making the 1 or 2 passes until someone gets “antsy” and throws up a poor shot. Then we get to watch Paul get upset on the sidelines and start his constant rotation in and out of replacements. Can’t get a rhythm going? I wonder why?

Real Fan (bravesfan79 I know it’s you), you’ve lost your mind.
Mario West plays for the Hawks…couldn’t even start for Hewitt and barely made the team his Sr. year.
Anthony Marrow is lighting it up in the NBA…didn’t/couldn’t do it here.
Wow, have you been in a coma for the last 5 years?
So it’s the fans fault we’re going to finish last in the ACC this year? I guess that’s why the 2006 team quit, no fan support.
Real fans, who know even a little bit about basketball, get sick to their stomachs watching playground basketball at this level.
At least Chan made it to the post season every year, like Bobby Cremins. (When the field was 48 teams).
By the way, that was a sexual deviate imposter on the last comment who missed having a father figure in it’s life, so sad.

To Real Fan:
Thanks for a polite post. It’s better than the flamers we sometimes get. But I have to ask, do you disagree with everyone else’s analysis on this blog, or are you ignoring it? Most every comment is not opinion, it is fact, based on a huge body of work by CPH that has been observed by everyone. It is admirable to “focus on supporting the team”, but when the end result is so predictable, and with no hope for improvement in sight, it’s just human nature to focus on the cause of the problem (i.e. the coach) and the result of the problem (i.e. kids who do not know how to play and win basketball games consistently). So - again - are you ignoring the facts, do you disagree with them, or don’t you care that we are poorly coached? If you disagree, let’s blog! Thanks.

I must admit, I was not happy with CCG, but I wasn’t ready to can him. Having CPJ this season was a great, great thing, and it woke me up a bit.
I saw a post on another article that asked when we’ve beaten a team we were supposed to lose to, and I have lot of examples (Tech almost always plays Dook and UNC tight), but it is frustrating to lose a game like UVa at home because we had the ball in a freshman’s hands with 10 seconds to go (and a timeout remaining). Maybe the clock is running out on CPH.
It occurred to me that CPH might not have used that timeout at the end of UVa because he’s not accustomed to having any at that point. We burn timeouts at the strangest places in the second half.
I’ll be there for Dook. Come out and be loud and obnoxious. It’ll make the Devils feel at home. Southern Hospitality and all.

It’s funny. After Tech beat UGA, every post in the Tech blog was about Tech winning the ACC and the national championship next year. Now I like to give the Tech brethren as much grief as anyone else and I receive my share from them but I want to go in a different direction today….Why is it the AJC can never give descriptions of the perps when they are anything but white males? Has anyone read about the senseless killing in Cabbagetown? When others ask why they can go to NY and feel safe but not here in Atlanta then maybe we should pull out some demographic statistics. It is not all that hard to understand. What is hard to understand is why we do not demand harsher punishment and less acceptance of the “thug” lifestyle.

Why is Tech down ?
6 ACC Bowl Losses.
SEC Won 6 Bowl Games.
SEC Won Last 3 BCS National Championship Games in a Row.
Vanderbilt beat what was then Number 24 Boston College, who won the ACC Atlantic Division Title.
LSU killed Georgia Tech 38-3.
SEC 6 Bowl Wins are the Most Bowl Wins by any Conference, again this season.
ACC 6 Bowl Losses, only the Big 10 also had 6 Bowl Losses, and no one worse.

Dear, sweet little “Dawgonit”:
If you can read, and have some level of attention span, you’ll realize that this blog is about BASKETBALL. Of course we’re switching to talking about basketball … its basketball season.
Also, please show us the blogs where it was claimed that Tech will win the ACC and the Nat’l Championship?? If I recall, the jist of the Tech blogs after the UGA football game victory was that Tech has turned a corner (beating UGA) and can now focus on winning the ACC Championship (someday) and maybe even winning a Nat’l Championship (for the 5th time, someday). Who said anything about winning it all next year??
Finally, about Tech’s rings: the rings were given to the team by CPH and his staff to commemorate what was, for this team at this time, a very successful season. The players decided (together) to have the score of the Tech-UGA game added to the rings as an additional tidbit of fond memory. Lest any Bulldog fan forget, when UGA broke Tech’s 8-game winning streak in 1956, the UGA player who scored the winning touchdown had his jersey retired. I can’t remember his name because its not worth remembering.
To all Tech fans … GO JACKETS (in Football AND Basketball) !!
To all fans of that “unfortunate other school” from the state of Georgia … go hibernate in your trailers ‘til August and let the civilized people carry on with sustaining the civilization that we regret letting you inhabit.

Clearly you’re just a child, so I’ll simply repeat my last statement from above:
Of course we’re switching to talking about basketball … its basketball season and this is a Basketball blog.
Go ahead a linger in Football land all you want … GT beat UGA in Football AND Baseketball this year and we’re moving on with our lives and our other sports. Clearly UGA has no ability to do this because Football is all UGA has. I know it pains you to lose to a bunch of nerds who should be studying calculus or at home playing “World of Warcraft” … and the funny thing is we’d probably beat you at that too (not to mention chess, croquet, tiddlywinks, badminton, Dungeons & Dragons, Risk, Monopoly, Candyland, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit … should I go on?).

2002-2003 UGA 3 Tech not ranked. .
2001-2002 UGA 22 Tech 24.
.
Two of the last 8 years (Coach Richt Era), Tech has been ranked. 1 was Number 24 and the other Number 22. Both of those years, UGA has the better football team, had the better season, and didn’t lose to crappy football teams like Tech’s Losses this year to Virginia, North Carolina and LSU - not a 1 of whom are a ranked football team in the only poll that will be published for the 2008-2009 season.
Tech 9-4 against a soft schedule.
UGA 10-3 against the 4th toughest Strength of Schedule in the nation.
You wish that you could disregard your losses to Virginia, North Carolina and LSU along with your loss to Virginia Tech, while UGA only has 3 Losses, all of whom are ranked teams in the Final AP Poll.
This has left the ACC with zero teams ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 14, while The SEC has four (4.)
Clearly Georgia Tech did not have as good a season as UGA.
Yet, all season long the Tech fans came running in here saying that UGA keeps DROPPING IN THE POLLS and Tech kept moving up in the rankings.
Now, however, that the season is over, UGA did not drop so far in the Polls as to determine that Tech had a better season than UGA.
You did NOT.

Maybe the worst thing about this string of postings is that we’ve let a dawg fan (45-42) pull us off topic. That Maryland loss was infuriating. We led for, what, 38 minutes of the game? And we leave the ball in the hands of a freshman for the critical possession? Again?
2008 Pre-season ranking: - UGA: 1 - Tech: unranked
2008 Final ranking: - UGA: 13 - Tech: 22 (with six, SIX, more wins than the “experts” thought we’d have)
I’m still going to say that we had the better season. The Peach Bowl loss was terrible (I was there, much closer to the action than I’d have preferred), but it doesn’t erase a year where CPJ broke losing streaks to FSU and UGA.
I’m happy to beat UGA in roundball, too, but it won’t mean as much until we do it in Athens. Everybody wins at home in this series.
Come on, Jackets… let’s start winning at home in the ACC!
