What to make of the win over Georgia

Greetings, all-

Interesting game last night between Tech and Georgia. The Jackets fell behind by 10 at the half and then by 13 with 16:40 left. Helped in large part by a full-court press that created 12 second-half turnovers and a strong rebounding effort (Tech had a 27-14 edge in the second half, including 15 on the offensive glass), the Jackets came back for perhaps the biggest win of the season.

Dennis Felton said Georgia lost for three main reasons - Second-chance points (it was even in the first half, 12-4 in the second in Tech’s favor), steals (12-5 edge in the game, 6-4 in the second half) and Tech’s eight blocks (five in the second half). Felton said that generally the consequence of beating a full-court press like Tech’s was that it gives you easy shots to the basket. However, Gani Lawal and Alade Aminu repeatedly stuffed Georgia players when they took it to the rim after beating the press.

Felton said it was an “almost-hard-to-believe number of plays at the rim to erase some dunks and layups for us.”

Before I forget, Felton’s take on Tech: “Extremely athletic and big, and they’ve got a good piece in (Iman) Shumpert. He’s a terrific young point guard, but Schumpert looked like a freshman tonight. He had a tough night. (3-for-14 from the field, four assists, seven turnovers). (Just so we’re clear, while it might read like Felton was trying to put down Shumpert, he wasn’t.)

“But they’ve got a great shooter in (Lewis) Clinch. They’ve got a pro in Lawal and they’ve got a great physical presence and leader in Peacock. They’ve got really nice parts. They just don’t have a lot of depth.”

Anyway, back to Tech’s defense. It appeared, maybe in the vein of the Alabama game, that Tech got going once it started pressing and playing more aggressively on defense. Said Clinch, “That’s how we play - we’re a run and gun team.”

Paul Hewitt noted his team’s increased aggression on defense and fight on loose balls. It certainly seems like Tech benefits when it extends itself defensively. The problem, though, is that to press, it’d be hard to do that a lot with Tech’s depth. The Jackets will get a boost when Mo Miller comes back. Hewitt said that he’s scheduled to start practicing Thursday and that when he is ready to actually play will be up to him.

Said Hewitt, “I love to press and I think we’re good at it. It’s just going to be a matter of me spotting guys like Bassirou (Deng) and Brad (Sheehan) and trying to stretch the bench.”

On Miller coming back, “When he comes back, we will definitely keep pressing. The biggest thing that Moe is going to do for us when he comes back healthy is allow us to put Zachery Peacock back at forward where he is really comfortable.”

So I’m wondering what your takeaway was from the game and thoughts are going into the second ACC game Saturday (against Maryland):

Is it the sluggish first half, the comeback, the possibility of using the press more and how that might give Tech a boost, the satisfaction of beating Georgia? Or something else?

His name is spelled “Shumpert” Seriously, and you are the beat writer?

Well, we rallied to beat the worst team on our schedule. Tech is definitely a different team when pressing. Hopefully they will mix it in more during games to help get over these awful starts. But most teams left will have guards more capable of beating the press. Let’s hope for the best.

My prediction is that we’ll win five, maybe six, ACC games. At this point, the only reason for any team to let our bigs (Lawal, Aminu, Peacock) beat them is either laziness on defense (not double teaming) or failure to block out on rebounds. We have NO perimeter game to speak of at all. Every one of the upcoming 15 ACC games will have us playing against a tougher defense than we faced last night.

Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Miller will come back and look more like Jarret Jack, and maybe Clinch will look more like BJ Elder, and maybe Lance Storrs is this team’s Marvin Lewis, and maybe Foreman will turn into Mario West. I just don’t see any of that happening.

I’m glad we beat our rival, but any morale boost the team may get from last night’s comeback win will disappear quickly when we’re struggling just to score points against ACC teams.

That was one ugly basketball game. I think I heard Coach Hewitt say the only way for us to win this year is to win ugly. Well, so be it.

At times last night these guys looked like they had no clue as to how to play basketball. No ball movement on offense, fighting each other for rebounds, not able to anticipate where rebounds were going to bounce (in the first half we gave up 7 offensive rebounds IN A ROW). Then they will run an offensive play, move the ball and get an easy bucket. Makes you scratch your head wondering why they can’t do that all the time.

At least they kept playing hard and fought back after getting down. Let’s hope they can find a few games where they play that way from the start and don’t get down. It will be the only way we can win this year. That and maybe Clinch can make a friggin shot.

Hey Ggodsey - Awwww…What happened lil’ puppy? LOST in football, LOST in basketball…and later today you LOSE your two BEST players (Matthew “Baby Favre” Stafford..and Knowshon “Hey did you just see him jump over that AMAZINGLY GIFTED CENTRAL MICHIGAN Player” Moreno). Keep coming to the tech blog and talking trash. It only makes us know we’re in your head and that the losing is getting to ya. Is there a reason you guys talk so much trash AFTER you LOSE? Did you talk trash to Florida after they blew your doors off? Anyways, I’m going to have a keg at my house if you want to come by later. It will be to celebrate “Stafford and Moreno’s Choosing Big Money Over Athens Going Away Party”!!! Hope to see you there you mangy fleabag.

Oh and remember how bad Godsey use to beat your dawgs? Funny how you’d choose to post under his name since he owns UGA!

David, Ken did not misspell Shumpert’s name. What you saw was in Felton’s quote.

By Zach

January 7, 2009 12:44 PM | Link to this

We have to improve our shooting. Our backcourt is so young and inexperienced, so I imagine they will indeed get better. Miller improved noticeably last year, Shumpert should do the same. He’s a bit streaky and raw right now.

We knew it would be a down year, especially after Bell went down (we could really use his defense). They’re going to have to scrap and hustle and fight all year long to get some wins.

Let’s hope for some more continuity in the future.

A resounding victory for GT? Naaa…no Hewitt coached team ever sustains momentum very long. Question: How many times has a Hewitt-coached team won a game we were supposed to lose? None or very, very few that I can think of. We barely win last night, keep getting pounded by lesser teams, etc. I am so tired of Paul Hewitt, but of course, we have an exciting recruiting class coming in next year, and the year after, and the year after! So, we hang on to this coach who has never won an ACC title. Which of you fans are willing to give this guy another shot? I’ve had my filled a few years ago. I can’t stomach watching his teams play any more.

Oh Hey Georgia players…Meet Gani Lawal…Gani meet…oh damn Gani…don’t be so rude and beat the hell out of them. Sorry, he’s always so unkind in the paint to opposing teams. Oh well, hey I’d like you to meet my other friend Roddy Jones, Hey Roddy, oh man he just ran right by you guys… sorry. Let me see if I can get him again….Hey Roddy! Been to a final four or national championship recently? Who just beat ya? Who’s better right now Mikey? I am so sick of talking about the past with UGA fans. Did you live in the past when you beat us? No, you talked about the present. But when you lose you bring up the past. Guess there is no way of winning for Tech huh? Guess next year if Tech blows out Georgia at Bobby Dodd then Georgia fans will say “2 wins in 9 years”. Keep holding on to that. And we’ll keep focusing on kicking your tail now…currently…present…here. Cause right now…your basketball team couldn’t beat us and neither could your football team.

Explain the logic to me here. You LOSE in football and talk trash. You LOSE in basketball and talk trash. Why? Does it make you feel better? Most teams boast when their team WINS. You get all excited and want to hate on the winners when your team loses? That’d be like all of us going over to the Arizona Cardinals Message Board and acting like we WON THE PLAYOFF game last week. Take a step back guys. You’re second in the state in two sports this year….BASKETBALL…and…FOOOTBALL. Now, go think about that and go cry on your UGA blog about your pretty boy qb leaving. Or losing your Running Back who will always be remembered for Jumping over a CENTRAL MICHIGAN PLAYER. WOW! How did he jump over such a talented defender? And go spend more time wondering why wasn’t it on sportcenter? UGA didn’t have a bad year. You’d think they did from all the folks that jumped off the bandwagon. Tech had an exceptional year considering they got a new coach, started a new system, started 16 freshmen and sophmores and beat their rival. Anyways, thanks for coming on here and looking like idiots. Makes us feel better about ourselves and our WINNING TEAMS!

After watching this team for the last 9 years i can say for sure. They are the worst coached team in the ACC. Great recruits and good kids that don’t win games when they are on the Flats. It’s not the players it’s the system. We never play a Zone Defense even though we now start 3 bigs due to a lack of guards. Not to mention the lack of movement on offense. X’s and O’s it is disappointing to see a college team play this way. Even in a win over UGA I am irritated. How long are we going to settle for a coach that is 151-117 (56%)overall, when we play 10 cupcakes a year? Send Hewitt to the NBA where his coaching might work.

There is a talented core. Their strength is the front court, which is big and fast, which will allow them to press. They need to press the whole game because they have not yet fully committed to defensive relentlessness (recent example: Mario West). To be successful in the ACC they have to keep mental lapses to, at most, a handful a game, and they aren’t there (this aspect is also a reflection of the coaching staff’s emphasis). They can have a good season and make the NCAA tournament, but they will have to play tougher as well as smarter defensively.

Keep up the good analysis of our lousy coach and keep up the pressure on Radacovich using facts and not emotion so hopefully he will do the right thing and fire the coach. I am amazed at how many guys at the end of last year felt we would have a better team this year. They had to be looking at a different team than I saw. That coupled with his terrible record said this year would be bad and it will be worse than bad. Lastly, the dreamers are saying wait until the new recruits come. What evidence is there that some better players will make up for his poor coaching?
