2009 breakout players
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In case you missed it, we took a look yesterday at five players who should make an impact in 2009. These are guys who did not play at all, or played sparingly, in 2008.
Here is the article about Robert Hall, Anthony Allen, Richard Watson, T.J. Barnes and Omoregie Uzzi.
Do you agree with these selections? Who did we leave out? And who will make the biggest impact?

Can you smell what we’re brewing down on the flats? Coach Johnston is building a powerhouse!
I think Josh “the Robot” Nesbott had a breakthrough year. He didn’t play this option attack in high school and for him to step in in the first year and start running this thing like he’s been doing it his whole life is impressive. A breakthrough even.

Sorry. I misread this. I thought we were discussing who broke out this past season.
For 2009, I think Uzzi. And I hereby name him Omoregie “the submachine gun” Uzzi. Yeah. LOL!

I would like to see more BeBe Thomas next year. He did a great job blocking and catching the ball when he had the chance. I hope to see a linebacker or two break out/step up. Even though I do not over analyze recruiting,( Michael Johnson, Vance Walker, and Daryl Richards were not considered to be 4 or 5 star talents coming in) it does not seem Tech is improving very much in this area according to Rivals and Scout.

Lets see if J.C. Lanier gets a chance to start. We know we will need help on the d-line, and he might just be the man to do it. Also, will Luallen be red shirted?

Cooper Taylor should be even better I’d think on D. Scott Blair has been semi-solid, but I’d think his next season will be a good one.

GGodsey you are an incredibly immature jerk. Grow up! The five guys you mentioned should really help improve the team along with some of the incoming freshmen. Hopefully, Jordan Luallen the incoming quarterback from Indiana can give us the pass option with accurate throws to keep the defenses honest.

I agree about defensive tackle TJ Barnes and I’d love to see incoming freshman defensive tackle JC Lanier get in the mix early as well. Georgia Tech has never had a 300+ pound defensive lineman. Next season they could have two on the field at the same time. That’s the type of defense that can stifle other teams.
I also agree that Anthony Allen should have an impact on next season. Not just because of what he can do, but the rest he can give Dwyer at B-Back (along with Richard Watson) and I bet that Coach Johnson will have some packages where he will have Allen/Watson lined up at b-back and slide Dwyer in at one of the a-back slots and see if they can get Dwyer more touches on the edge and also confuse defenses and have them worried about Dwyer to soften up the middle for Allen/Watson.

Hey guys, we actualy have a lot of down time today so I have been spending a lot of time on the computer. Coach Meyers daughter will be attending GATech next year so I have been reading the Atl paper catching up on the GATech vibe. I really respect Coach Johnson and his offense. Good luck in the future and Go Gators! Tim

My vote goes to Jonathon Dwyer. He seriously needs to “break out” of the chow line. He was sporting a gut at the bowl game that would make any self respecting offensive lineman proud. Maybe that’s why he couldn’t get to the corner against LSU.

If Allen and Dwyer both stay at B-back we’ll see Dwyer’s total rushing yards drop but may see an increase in his already qaudy 7 YPC average. I’m also looking for Marcus Wright to be more of a contributor running the ball - the kid already blocks like crazy. I think Uzzi and Nick McRae will break into the O-line starting line-up. I watched McRae stick it to AJ Harmon (Ugag recruit, 08) in the state play-offs last year. I know Reid started 1/2 the year at CB but I’m thinking he may be an impact player next year. By the way Ramblin Wrecker, Kevin Battle is the last 300 lb. I can remember on TECH’s d-line but he did what you talked about and caused problems in the middle. Speaking of size, the teams with the really big d-lines (BC, UVA, LSwho) were the ones that gave our offense the most trouble this year.

let’s face the truth. we had a break-out year and still georgia had a better record. i’m just getting older. our defense and special teams better improve and yes the passing game too. it’s over as far as the run. stopping the run is a priority for our opponents. we need better players…..

Yeah Mike it’s kinda pitiful. UGA wins 10 and they cry in their beer. Tech wins 9, gets a ring, and want a ticker tape parade down Peachtree. Guess that’s the difference in the 2 programs in a nutshell.

At the risk of returning this to a football blog - sorry to steal it away from you sissy dogs - let’s discuss breakout players for the 09 season.
The Uzzi kid is going to be a good one. A hoss, as we use to say. That interior line of LSU that pushed us back into the backfield will find a tougher line to face once guys like Uzzi develop. He could still be a year away from really breaking through but I expect big things from him.
Now what is all this Robot talk? I’ve never heard that nickname.

I would like to see Marcus Wright break out as a punt and kickoff return man. I can’t remember the last big threat return man for GT. Rhino was consistent, but he was not much of a threat to turn one into points.

All those names plus some could step up. Tech needs to hit 60% of it’s passes to really get to the next level, ie top 15. Keep an eye on all four QB’s who could all play some each adding a new dimension and with injury possibilites nagging we need all four which includes the incoming freshman. At the same time we may need one or two more in redshirt status. We should be well stocked at A-back and at Wr’s when all the freshman get in. Defense slacked up at the end of the year and don’t know what caused that but may need some attention in the spring. We lost two games by 7 or less points and the two we lost by more the blowouts we blew it by mistakes and otherwise they would have been much closer. So I’m not sure how much the defense is blamed since the mistakes is what caused the blowout. So Johnson and Co. are building something special here in Atlanta.

Our Offense is good but can only become great if we have a legitimate passing attack.beating Duke,Miss St, Etc with a run only offense is one thing but beating a really topnotch team(ie an LSU for instance) is going to require a team to respect our passing ability and a 45% pass completion ratio is not going to scare anyone. We have to improve our passing or we cannot expect to duplicate our record and certainly will not improve it.Without a viable passing game, everybody we face is going to put 9 in thebox and shut us down.Josh did a good job this year but if he can’t hit the broad side of a barn at 25 yds ,he won’t be our QB by the end of next season.

I think the kicker and punter Scott Blair will. Although he started off slow going 1 for 5 on FG’s, but he was 11 for 14 at the end. Great punter too. And not afraid of contact. He would be a great DB. And the offensive line too.

The names you’re looking for are Derrick Steagall and Dez White as far as ghosts of Tech’s “Exciting Return Man” past are concerned. Good teams creat havoc on special teams. It’s time for Tech to become a good team.

What basis are any of you making your decisions on, even you Mr. AJC writer. You have not seen anyone of these guys play since they closed practice, and last time I checked Uzzi was on muscle beach with a really bad ankle imjuryfor a very long time. Probably wont be as quick as he used to be, nor as mobile.
My picks are Nick Mcrae, Phil Smith, Marcus Wright, Embry Peeples, and for the sleeper: Quinten Sims.

Too many names to mention for 2009 … Depth will not be a problem for the Jackets; not even on the D-line.
in regards to the RING for beating GA
I read a great point in a blog from a different article in reference to the rings. So many UGA people, and a few Tech people as well, seem to think this is kinda hoaky. A little “overboard” just for winning a football game. This blogger pointed out, as did quite a few articles BEFORE Tech’s 45-42 win that GA retired a player’s jersey for snapping Tech’s 8-game winning streak.
By CT_Jacket
January 6, 2009 12:24 AM | Link to this
No one reads the details anymore. Tech did not get a ring for beating Georgia. They got rings, along with other things, for going to the Chick-Fil-A bowl. The seniors who designed the rings included the UGA score.
The UGA players should have gotten rings for the Capital One Bowl and put “Pre-Season #1” on them.

Allen will be the x factor. A bruising back to relieve Dwyer and when the other half of the passing package is installed and learned…by fall, the other x-factor will be Bey Bey. He dropped that ball on the first drive but what do you expect when it was only the 5th ball thrown at you all season. I thought what little passing packages we did see were great. One broke Dwyer for 35 yards in the flats.

I hate to break the news to all the Luallen fans, but he will more than likely be redshirted next year. Johnson has said that he would like to redshirt as many freshmen as he can. I think the only places that true freshmen will have a chance to play will be on both the D-Line and O-Line. Hopefully they will pack some weight on Jaybo in the off season and I see Nesbitt making a bigger step in the offseason in learning this offense.
As far as breakout players. I see Wright getting more carries out of the backfield to utilize his speed more. I also see him becoming a better return man. I also agree that Barnes and Uzzi will be two to watch come Spring and Summer practices.
To all of the UGAy fans who continue to fill our blogs with idiotic statements. You might want to start worrying about what in the hell you are going to do since Fatford and Knowshow have left. The truth is that Cox and King are not going to win you 10 games next year. You will be a middle of the road team in a middle of the road division of the SEC with UF the only bright spot in your division. The SEC West will own the East next year with a on the rise Ole Miss, another strong Bama team, and LSU being the team to beat in the SEC and possibly a NC contender. Yeah we got embarassed by LSU on New Years Eve but we also wittnessed the coming out party of a freshman QB that will make LSU a viable contender for the NC. Something that I am sure they will represent better than your beloved PUPS.
