What’s next?

Good morning, all-

Hopefully you’ve gotten some of the anguish of the Chick-fil-A Bowl out of your system, though I’m guessing the Capital One Bowl result didn’t help you much. Looks like the Bulldogs took out the frustration of the Tech loss out on the Sparties. It’s quite possible, too, that UGA was just a better team than Michigan State. I’m guessing, for those of you who work with UGA fans, this morning wasn’t a lot of fun.

Anyway, some thoughts. Don’t know how much you have thought or heard that LSU “solved” the triple option. Paul Johnson was asked something to this effect after the game and he was a bit sarcastic about it, that LSU figuring out the triple option is what made Tech fumble the punt, put the opening kickoff out of bounds, etc.

It was true that Tech couldn’t run the ball effectively, but Johnson and co-offensive line coach Mike Sewak’s take was that LSU dominated the line of scrimmage. It was a little like the Boston College game, where Ron Brace and B.J. Raji kept driving the guards and center back into Josh Nesbitt. The same thing was happening with LSU, and that takes away the dive in the triple option and screws up the rest of the play. My guess would be that Tech will have its problems against defensive lines that are stout more than those that are fast, not to say that LSU’s line wasn’t also fast.

At any rate, I think I’d trust the results of the season and Johnson’s tenure at Georgia Southern and Navy over one game.

And about the rings - I didn’t do a great job (or maybe even a good job) of conveying the meaning of the rings. It’s something Johnson has always done for his teams. It was meant to commemorate the season, not just the win over Georgia. Obviously, the win was a highlight of the year, which is why that went on the ring. But it’s not like that’s the only thing that’s going on it.

Also, I’ve seen some posts on some other boards about how Johnson treating bowls as a reward backfired. It’s possible, but I don’t know if that was the problem. What Johnson meant, and has said, is that he doesn’t use bowl practices like an additional spring practice, where sessions are longer and more grinding. The practices Tech had were like typical in-season practices, where the focus is on preparing for the opponent. Most, if not all, of Tech’s practices before Christmas were in full pads. I can’t vouch for the intensity of them, as reporters aren’t allowed to watch practice, but I never got the sense that they were goofing off or anything.

In some ways, the Chick-fil-A Bowl may have the sort of effect going into the offseason that the Gardner-Webb game did in the season. Johnson and Sewak both wondered aloud if beating Georgia and then having a month of fans (and media) patting them on their back didn’t give them a false sense of security about the game. I think this will likely bring them back to earth a little bit. I can see this game being brought up every time offseason workouts start to slacken.

Which brings me to my question. What are your priorities for this team - becoming bigger/stronger/faster? Continuing to develop the Run & Shoot? Find answers on the offensive line? Defensive line? More depth at A-back and B-back?

Your comment regarding the Gardner-Webb effect is spot on. Regarding your questions at the end, I’d say all of the above are important, but two things stand out, we have to have a passing game in the future to compete at a high level. You could tell Josh was rusty and needs much more practice in the passing game, we had guys open all night, but his throws were way off. Second the key to the offense working is the O-line. Aside from the stupid mistakes, LSU just manhandled us at the line.

Thanks for the great work this season Ken, looking forward to next season.

I think PJ will do as nick saban and post this score all over the place during the offseason just as saban did with the miss state game. This will fuel the fire and that win in athens was no fluke. Let the uga fans talk. I hope they underestimate us like they did this year.

I was thoroughly embarrassed. This was a disaster. As many of you know I entered a bet with an old friend of mine, a Ph.D from LSU under which he would place a drop of Tabasco into his eye for each 20-plus yard run Tech put on LSU and I would take a shot of bourbon for each Tech pass attempt. I thought certainly that we’d run it and run it and run it down their faces, with only a few pass attempts to keep things honest. I was sadly mistaken. 20 shots in I was passed out. I have no idea what happened after that.

This was a disgrace. My immediate reaction - after I emptied the contents of my stomach - was to call for the Coach’s immediate resignation. It was a question of honor. But after coming to terms with it, I see this as more of a small step back and not a signal of things to come. We will regroup and we will challenge for titles and championships. We will. I just won’t make such stupid bets.

Folks, we achieved a lot this season, but I thing the disappointment you hear, see, and feel are good for the program.

I personnally felt the offense did not play that badly, but the timing was off. But the defense has slacked off as the year went on.

I was at the game and it shocked me how big and fast LSU was. Now we made mistakes, but I thought the month off hurt us and helped LSU. What everyone saw was an LSU team team that finally lived up to its expectations and talent.

We have nothing to be ashamed of, but we do have some work to do. Just as we learned a lot from the Gardner-Webb game, we learned a lot from LSU.

And I don’t think anyone from the Muttland Nation is in the position to say anything to us.

The bowl game showed me the complete need of an o-line that can give the backs enough time to get the plays off. LSU completely destroyed many Tech plays before they got started. We’d better bring in some big studs that can slow the defensive rush down.

Let me guess Tech fans:

Your 9-4 season was a historic success because everyone predicted you to go 0-12 this year and your players had to walk in 4 feet of snow uphill both ways to get to practice everyday. LSU is the best 8-5 team of all time and would probably have won the national championship this year if they played the way they did against Tech all season. There is no shame in getting blasted by 7 touchdowns at the hands of a team that had a losing SEC record. No shame at all. This will be a wake up call to Tech’s players and coaches. Georgia Tech is on the rise!!!

Do I have this about right Tech fans? You clowns are so predictable.

Isn’t one of the traits of this offense smaller O linemen that have the stamina to get down field to execute the blocking schemes? Bigger hogs up front won’t be able to get out and downfield without getting gassed. Unless PJ recruits nothing but O linemen and rotates them constantly. The conferences that PJ has been able to run this offense in didn’t have the dominant D lines present in the BCS conferences. Thursday night might have been Tech’s wakeup call. You will face numerous big, strong, and fast D linemen at this level. The chickens may be coming home to roost on the flats. And I am not a UGA fan by any stretch, but were it not for a pick 6 and Samuels fumble they beat you by several TDs in spite of their Ds poor play. The Tech defense to put it mildly faded down the stretch, and with Johnson, Walker, and Richard leaving, uh oh. Your defense Morgan Burnett excludued sucks. The secondary can’t cover good high school recievers.

Once again congrats on the 1-7 record against UGA! The game exposed my post UGA game comment that there was alot of chirping going on by a team that, save for two turnovers, “whistled by the grave” on their Defense that really looked porus against UGA’s passing game. Also, CPJ’s smug confidence took a hit in the ChickfilA Bowl. That fake punt has to go down as the worst call of the bowl season!!!!!! Can you say DESPERATION!!!! I laughed till I hurt at the sight of a 280LB linemen doing his best impression of an elephant stuck in mud!!!! Hope all you closet fans got a “Gift Return” receipt for that new Tech garb you got for Christmas!!!!

Paul Johnson’s arrogance about the infallibility of his beloved offense is astounding. Got his azz handed to him by 35 points and he wants to cherry pick excuses? He better wake up, acknowledge he’s in the big leagues now and adapt accordingly. The lighter offensive linemen that it takes to run his offense will consistently get manhandled by bigger, more talented defensive fronts. And he better hit the recruiting trail and do a better job attracting skill players. Looking at this years incoming commits it seems that a lot of Lucas Cox types are the only ones interested. When Chan’s talent and speed is gone…..Oh wait! PJ will be gone by then as well. He may be arrogant, but he’s not stupid. He saw his future Thursday night and he’s having problems handling the truth of big time football.

Thanks, Jason.

As to whether Johnson put the “smackdown” on me or anyone else, I regret to say he hasn’t. If you’ll read again what I wrote, I provided Johnson’s take on the game. I didn’t say I agreed or disagreed with it. I figured that some of you would want to hear it.

I don’t think that anything in this post really goes against what I wrote in the story after the game - that Tech still has a long way to go. I’m not sure how writing that Johnson and Sewak said that Tech got dominated at the line of scrimmage is in some way defending Tech. I’d say it’s an indictment of the team’s personnel.

That said, I’ll say again that I don’t think the problem was that LSU figured out how to stop the triple option and gave everyone else a blueprint for stopping it. The problem was that Tech got outplayed by a better team. The blueprint is having a defensive line physically superior to Tech’s and a month to practice.

If it were a matter of “solving,” that probably would have happened a long time ago.

As for the stuff about Tech’s practices, I wrote about Johnson’s bowl practice philosophy well before the game. I would have said the same thing that I wrote this morning before the game. I wrote it today because it seemed like some people got the impression that “treating the bowl game as a reward” was equivalent to “taking a vacation,” which wasn’t the case. Again, I’m trying to clear up what I believe to be a poor understanding.

Anyway, I hope that helps. Obviously, you’re free to believe what you want.

thanks.

LSU game=FAIL

Ken: Spot-on analysis. The teams that we have struggled with most—most notably a sorry 5-7 UVA team—were big up front. So, I would say the #1 priority would be to develop better line play/players, on both sides of the ball. And keep working on that secondary!

Lastly, maybe this will drill into everyone’s head that we have no room to be sloppy or not take anyone seriously (such as Vandy in Music City next year).

And to all of you UGA fans—you still lost to the Tech team that stunk up the Dome, so STFU. You can’t add any of LSU’s points to your 42. It doesn’t work that way.

Incidentally, we still finished with a better SEC record than LSU…

“Elephant stuck in mud”. That’s hilarious. From the looks of your 2009 recruits, that trait won’t be confined to the line positions. And was it my imagination or had Jonathan Dwyer gained about 20 lbs after the regular season. He was sporting quite a gut during the bowl game.

t came down to film and time. LSU had plenty of film on us and three weeks to study it, design a defense, and then practice it.

Tech had three weeks, but almost no film of the new LSU QB. I think you’ll agree that watching film of the guy who started most of the year for LSU was pretty worthless. Combine our defense needing time to figure out the QB, our offense being shut down, and the incredible field position that resulted from our mistakes and the first half could be predicted. Nice onside kick by the way. We fell for that last year too.

Coach Johnson will be able to institute the rest of the playbook next year. This will give us more balance and counter teams with more than a week to prepare for us.

As far as Tech’s future, I’m pretty optimistic. We played this year with half of a brand new offense, a pretty new defense, only 65 players on scholarship, and with 75 of the players being freshmen or sophomores. We were predicted to go 4-8 this season and wound up 9-4 with victories over Clemson, scUM, F$U, and UGAG. I’ll take that any year.

I understand that our team was really young this yr, but we need to recruit/develop bigger, stronger players on the O line and D line…..i think thats where the games are won and lost. We NEED to develop and recruit the kind of players that can compete with the likes of LSU and UGA regularly in order to move on to the next level. The team will certainly get bigger, stronger and faster. That’s a given! Who ever heard of team getting smaller, weaker and slower? Duh!

The focus should be on developing a sound offensive line, which allows them to develop a passing attack. They have to be able to pass better when the running plays aren’t working. They also need another receiver. Teams will double team Thomas when they go into a passing mode.

I think the defense will be fine. They will have a lot of depth on the defensive line.

I dont think anyone has said anything relevant to the game so far. I dont think that they figured out the option, really, did ya’ll even watch the game? Tech changed its entire system of play calling. I wouldnt care a bit if we ran the offense that we had all year and got the hell beat out of us. But we came out in in this gay spread that was run out of the base option package and looked like fools. I feel that we have established ourselves as a running team, so when we show up and pass the ball? And look like sh*t!!! This wasnt the right time to experiment. I hope i never see the “run and shoot”, “spread”, or any other stupid offense again. I think every senior on that DLine should get to punch CPJ in the stomach. This season was much better than almost anyone would have ever predicted. UGA should have been able to tie the longest streak in the series. The LSU game went the way I thought most of our games would have gone this year.

Next year has a good chance at being better than this year - more of Johnson’s recruits and more experience running this offense - remember, we did this well with athletes that were not accustomed to this offense.

LSU played great assignment football - much more disciplined than UGA is.

I am looking forward to next year. Johnson still has a lot of work to do with this team. Looking at where we were at this point last year (or even after the spring game), things do look good.

Our main concentration should be on passing, O-line strength and special teams.

  1. 45-42 is all we need to say if any UGA fans wants to brag about the bowls. BTW, none of my UGA friends have tried yet. I doubt they will. They know what matters. Nice to have bragging rights for the year.

  2. CPJ and GT treated this game like a reward and a cool down game. LSU and Myles treated this game like it meant something to compete and win. This game was very important to LSU to salvage a terribly disappointing regular season and sway some recruits between now and February that LSU is still a championship caliber program.

  3. Our offensive line and Nesbitt’s passing inaccuracy killed us.

  4. Priority #1 is to develop the O-line. Priority #2 is to develop the D-line. Priority #3 is to improve special teams. I am comfortable with everything else for 2009, but none of the rest will matter if the above priorities do not get fixed.

I think Reggie gave yall a few games in the last seven, so don’t whine to me about turnovers. You had a much higher recruited team on the field in the last match, and alot more experience. Bad game, great season. I think the offense will be fine next year but worried about defense and special teams which is the formula for VT’s 10 win seasons every year. Tough schedule next year but most of the tough games are at Bobby Dodd.

I can’t wait til next year. Here is why: 1 We will have a better understanding of our offense. 2. Our offense line will know fundimentals and assignments better. 3. Hopefully we will have a better passing attack with the run & shute. 4. Our secondary was terrible down the stretch-we should be better there. 5. Our back field will be deeper. 6. Nesbitt has had trouble pitching to his left, he will get that worked out. 7. This team will be older and wiser- we were one of the youngest teams in the country. That translates again to better understanding of assignments, and being ready to play every game and buying into the media or hype. I am very excited about next year.

Dayuum? Did you watch the game? The game that was on WEDNESDAY night? Hey genius, we threw 24 TIMES! More than we have the last half of the season!!! UGA shut the run down for 2qtrs and i know that this team had alot more talent than UGA but we didnt even try to establish the run in this game. I cant say what would or wouldnt have happened but the coaching staff let this team down wed night. I took our kids an entire year to buy into this system, hell, it took seven games before we stopped losing three and four fumbles. And then you want to go into this game THROWING the ball?????????? What if LSU came in and just decided to run the triple option? You think they might look like a bunch of d*******?? I dont hold it to our kids for getting beat like that after their coaching staff took the ability to win the game away from them…. I dont understand why this isnt more of a topic after the clear display on wed night? We clearly didnt TRY to establish the run and to come out throwing the ball when your not even fluid with your bread and butter run offense is one hell of a bad call. This surely has to be a lesson learned for our coaching staff.

For all the classy Ga folks who are contributing to this column….45-42. You were not better than Tech. Period. You lost in Athens, blew a huge halftime lead. Tech was manhandled by LSU. No question. PJ will start bringing his kids in. Hope you enjoyed your run. Get ready to see Tech beat Ga annually. Tech is getting better. In fact, despite all the follies of the last coach, Tech has already passed you. Tech will win ACC titles over the next five years. The only real question is how good will they get when PJ gets the players he wants. …45-42. Despite Tech getting killed by LSU, Tech has passed you.No matter how you try and take the sting away from that fact.45-42. Have a Happy New Year.

Seriously, for a moment, I do think that Tech needs a couple of dominate guards and a heavy center to lean on the defensive tackles. We have that and this offense is unstoppable. I’m not taking anything away from our line today. Those boys busted their b u t t s for us. But we may need to update there.

Ok, now back to the silliness. I’m going to pretend I’m IE66 and buzz29 somemore.

Great season, period. Win over UGA, and a nice bowl to boot. There are no excuses. LSU was better prepared and clearly wanted the game more. Not that Tech wasn’t at all prepared, and I’m sure the kids wanted to win, but LSU was better prepared.

CPJ deserves as much credit for the 9 wins as he does for this one loss. He more than anyone will regret the preperation, and he more than anyone knows how to correct it in the future.

Tech certainly needs work at the O-Line, but the most pressing need going into next season, is better passing by the QB’s. Some of that can be blamed on the O-Line, but I saw too many wide open opportunities end up in over-throws or just plain bad throws.

Even with that said, the future is extremely bright at Tech with CPJ. A BCS game next year is looking like a real possibility. Go Tech!!

Bill I’m not sure its accurate to say that Tech has “passed” Georgia any more so than it was accurate for Georgia fans to say that they “passed” the Florida program after last year’s victory. It may happen, but if it does it will certainly take more than one year.

As to getting CPJ’s players in there. I’m not sure the offense can be much better than they were this year. That was a solid solid offense. I guess what you hope for is more consistency and fewer turnovers. But there isn’t that much upside left on offense.

And on defense, it is yet to be seen if the new staff can recruit the same caliber of defensive lineman that you have on the team today. Remember you’re losing 3 highly effective seniors off that line. CPJ’s players probably won’t be any better than what you had this season.

I bled Tech football and it pains me to watch us lose to an inferior LSU team. I think we tried to be cute and change things up when all we really needed to do was to line up and play our offense. CPJ will learn from this and I expect bigger and better things next year.

Are you all enjoying my posts? I like to post one or two silly ones then a serious one. And then another silly one. But deep inside I really love Tech and all that the Institute has done for me.

GTg:

Check out the HS all-star game that was played a few weeks ago. I believe there were 7 or 8 GT recruits playing in that game. So I don’t mind looking at our commit list. And once your superstar QB and running back declare for the NFL, who will run your offense next year? Caleb King as your running back?? Now that will REALLY scare those SEC defenses.

I think that next year CPJ should look at Jaybo some more - with a year under his belt, he should be ready to run the offense, plus he has a better and more accurate arm than Josh does.

Tech beats Georgia for the first time in 8 years and they commemorate the win with a ring and give their coach a 50% raise. That shows how much they are obsessed with Georgia. It is the only game that counts for them every year. All this hullabaluh over one win shows how low the program is and how little they have to celebrate otherwise. If they played in the SEC they might have won 5 games this year. LSU proved that. Tech should drop football. The season is not about one game a year.

Although, some props: UGA’s 42 is the most points Tech has ever given up in a Tech victory in regulation, beating 41-38 against UVA (twice!). The Jasper Sanks fumble game is still the most Tech has ever given up in any Tech victory, OT included.

The bugs had a better than expected year in a light-weight conference. Congratulations. It’s a start.

I only hope that dismal showing at the Chick-fil-A Bowl doesn’t hurt your recruiting efforts. Hard to sell a second-rate conference like the ACC (‘cept for Boston College).

By Les Miles

January 2, 2009 3:00 PM | Link to this

Dear Chik-fil-a Bowl Chairman,

While LSU appreciates your Bowl’s hospitality and Atlanta is a wonderful city, your continuing contract with the ACC is a concern for me and I expect other SEC teams who may be unfortunate enough to have to play a lesser than expected opponent. As you know, your Bowl gets the #3 ACC team and the #5 SEC team. One would think such a match-up would be at least competitive or at least I thought so until Wed. night with about 55 minutes to go into the game.

We at LSU look at bowl games as an opportunity to play a good team at the end of the year as a starting off point for spring practice and the next season. To be blunt, we could have played any number of local high school teams and been challenged at least for a quarter. As it was we essentailly prepared and travelled and really didn’t play in a game any reasonable person might call football. I would call it more of a snuff film actually. Frankly, I am concerned for the physical and mental well-being of the opponent and I am afraid that an SEC coach could be sued by the Humane Scoiety or taken to the Hague for violations of human rights should such mismatches be continued. Counsel for the LSU Athletic Department cited at least 34 examples of conduct that would be considered torture under the Geneva Conventions in the first quarter alone. He asked me to write this letter and to notify certain interested parties so as to avoid furture liability for what may be considered cruelty by some observers.

The fourth quarter fake field punt was an unfortunate by-product of this mismatch. And please don’t blame me for that. I had given up actually coaching and was drinking adult beverages beginning sometime in the first quarter. One of our coaches had pulled a seven year old wearing a LSU sweater out of the stands at the begining of the fourth quarter and turned it over to him. Turns out he was a little more agressive than we had anticipated. Sorry about that.

In any event, the bottom line is that the SEC #5 team is clearly disadvantaged by playing the ACC’s #3 team and that needs to be addressed ASAP. My thought is to open it up to bowl qualifying teams from the WAC or the Mountain West or Conference USA. The #5 team in any of those conferences would clearly be superior to what we saw on New Year’s Eve.

I appreciate your listening and addressing my concerns.

Sincerly,

Les Miles

i must say that first year husker coach pellini had the huskers ready to play and made the corrections needed at half time.

Tech gets humiliated in front of a national tv audience and all you nerds can say is 45-42. Thats great. How about 52-38. That is the score Georgia put on LSU down at their home field. So giving up 42 to Ga who had 19, yep count em 19, season ending injuries plus a host on others that weren’t quite that bad, and you better enjoy 45-42 for another 7 years.

Now instead of having CPJ tel you how bad his special teams were, of which he is the head coach and has been all year, ask why he called a fake punt at his own 22 in the second quarter when his team was still in the game. His ego overcometh.

And the fans who were left after half time were proud of their classy airplanes flying all around the dome. Put that on your rings. All of you tech fans are hyprocrites.

Dr. Leo Marvin. Are you by any chance a math instructor at Georgia. You said, and I quote….”There is no shame in getting blasted by 7 touchdowns at the hands of a team that had a losing SEC record”. Only UGA math could equate 7 touchdowns to 38 points somehow. Ridiculous.

I have had a wild last few weeks. Last month when we all got together for guy’s night we gathered for poker at the house of a neighbor I don’t like very much. He always wins so I don’t like him. Anyway, when the night was over I had won $45 and he had only won $42! I couldn’t belive it! I finally beat him!

When I was leaving his house I made sure I rubbed it in a little. He takes alot of pride in his yard so I tore up his landscaping and actually stole some things from his yard to display forever in my house! HIs yard is a mess now. It was great!

$45 to $42 …I still can’t believe it. It’s all I can talk about!

I am so giddy and gay over the whole thing I had a ring made that says $45 - $42 on it.

Oh, a few nights ago I really got pounded in poker, but I still have my ring to look at!

And those uniforms were awful. Looked like the pants were washed in baby feces. I did like the shirts though I didn’t realize Tech (ok Nerds for you who prefer it) were blue.

45-42 me all you like. Doesn’t bother me although it might if you win 7 in a row and if one of them is 51-7. You have a nice team. Dwyer is the real deal but without a QB who can passthis team has overachieved and has see its peak.

Two specific comments:

One - LSU fans are the worst in the nation. They taunted Tech fans even before the game (during the pre-game parade). They taunt fans and it doesn’t matter if they win or lose. Those are the absolute worst fans in the nation, bar none.

Two - How many SEC teams did GA Tech play this entire season? Let’s see….. LSU, UGA, Miss State. It seems that GA Tech still has a winning record against SEC teams this year. Why would any SEC fan be on this blog, then?

By HAHA

Poor Tech fans are so excited to beat Georgia one time in 8 years. I have a lot of friends that GRADUATED from Georgia Tech and they are pretty embarrassed at the fact that their fans can’t celebrate anything else. As an outsider I looked up the stats from the past few years and Georgia Tech has consistently been beaten in every sport by Georgia. Is it not satisfaction enough to be a little bit better of an academic institution or do the Tech fans really have to keep repeating 45-42? It appears that Tech has only one sport where they have a winning record against Georgia: men’s basketball. They have a 100-84 record all-time. Also, from what I discovered Tech’s women’s volleyball team has dominated Georgia in recent years. I’m not saying that Tech shouldn’t be excited and proud of their victory but the fans on this board have to get a better argument together than 45-42. You are a school steeped in mathematical tradition and the best you guys can do is continue to repeat the same score. Have some class and pride. Cite graduating starting salaries, incoming SAT scores…Georgia fans have a lot more tradition in numbers to recite and I am sure they do…be better than that.

We definitely made several mistakes that cost 14 to 21 or so points…the punt return fumble, the fake punt, their onsides kick, etc…The big picture and this has been a problem since George Godsey left is how can we complete close to or better than 60% of our passes, which would open up the running game and scoring potential even more? To me it’s a matter of focus and execution. Meaning it’s better to hit the pass with an occasional stretching the field vertical pass to keep the other team honest and to make sure we are calling the correct pass plays for the talent in the game. Johnson was right we don’t have a passing game basically yet that can be effective. Those 17 passes we missed may have added another 100 yards to the rushing attack giving us over 400 yards total offense. The score is a little misleading as it does’nt highlight the mistakes and also does’nt say that we and LSU were close in first downs, yardage and time of Possession. That brings into more focus how the turnovers and incompletions hurt us.

Something else to ponder and don’t know if this is possible but a passing QB coordinator may be needed on the team to work with Johnson, WR’s coach and other offensive coaches. Two names that come to mind would be George Godsey, Shawn Johnes and/or Donnie Davis…of course they probably have other jobs but have experienced at running the option. Don’t discount the talent of LSU, some of those guys could be helping the Falcons in the future.

The 2007 loss to UGA was a blessing in disguise because it was the nail in the coffin of Chan. Let us hope that the 2008 Peach Bowl is the nail in the coffin for this offensive line. They need to be replaced or retrained. I don’t want to hear anything about recruiting new running backs. We already have enough backs to win but they add up to nothing without a line. GT’s o-line was about as successful as a screen door on a submarine against LSU.

I’m quite content with people thinking that LSU and UNC ‘figured out’ the T.O. That makes about as much sense as me watching a pro-style team lose and saying the the pro-style has been cracked.

I believe the Thanksgiving weekend game played at Sanford and Son Stadium was played on national television as well. Oh and you didn’t have to have ESPN to watch it, only rabbit ears on your TV and pick up a CBS station. If you were watching that game you will remember too that a huge amount of seats were empty too including the ones that had the red “rent for the season” seat cushions. Now tell us more about getting beat on national television with fans missing from the stands.

I was also impressed with the number of empty seats in Orlando for your game yesterday. Terrific fan base that can’t even find a way to get to Orlando on a holiday for a game!

I have to laugh that you would come on to a Tech blog and call us hypocrites. You are the definition of hypocrite. Fans like you are the reason the LSU fans were thanking us before the game for beating your team!

Now, go back to the UGA blog and talk all about how Slick Willie finally figured out how to coach defense. I am sure if he is around next year Bama won’t hang 31 on you in the first half, the Florida score will be closer than 49 - 10 and Tech won’t run all over you in the second half after spotting you a few points in the first half.

BTW - Tech is 2 & 1 versus the SEC this year and UGA is one of those 2 if you forgot 45 - 42*

Josh Nsebitt is not an effective passer. He completes one or two to start the game, but after that, he is mostly ineffective. When they get into a game inwhich they can not run the trible option, they need to be able to run off tackle with Dwyer AND Jones. Jones did not run off Tackle all year that I can recall. What’s wrong with putting a blocking tightend on the line for some plays? Hello? The offensive line did a very poor job. Most of that has to do with all the starters being out. They have to block much better and learn to pass block, which they are terrible at. Tech must work on the run and shoot and mix up the plays even more. You’ve got to keep em’ guessing with this triple option.

Are you a TECH grad or do you just like to retort based on emotions? That was an embarrassing claim and you should be ashamed of yourself. Why would you even try and bring race in to this and how can you make the claim that any team’s success over another team is based on the exploitation of a race. Didn’t we have like 10 athletes declared ineligible a few years ago? The majority of those athletes were African-American. Did we exploit their athletic value and ignore our duty to educate? We sure did…and it was deplorable. What gives you the moral right to throw claims of racial exploitation on a school? As a Tech Alumni and devout fan I apologize to all fans, including all SEC and ACC fans, for the idiotic and embarrassing claims of TJ, whoever they are.

I think one of the biggest things Tech needs to improve on is the lines on both O and D. The D line had some talent this year, but as far as size goes, we were really unmatched against the offensive lines of LSU and UVA, playing a large part of the losses because they both drove us right down the field. The offensive line needs to do a little better job at protecting Josh on the pass. This can be done by just getting plain bigger and stronger with a little better footwork. There will be a lot of depth at the A-Back position next year and Daniel Drummond will come in and give Dwyer some breathers. The special teams unit could also use a little tuning up after the LSU game…

Paul Johnson may have gave us a pretty good season, but I think this season could have been even better. Any time tech needed to pass, they couldn’t. We won’t come from behind many more times like we did against Georgia using the option. Some times you have to pass, and Josh Nesbitt can not pass. I wish we could have seen more Shaw especially in the chick-fil-a bowl and also against Virginia Tech because if your remember it was Nesbitts happy feet and lack of an arm that lost that game and keep Tech out of the ACC Championship game. So my point is, I saw some awful coaching calls this season by Johnson. Oh one more thing, I don’t see how anyone can blame this last loss on solely on special teams, the offense & defense was terrible.

What has to happen for GT to make the next step(s)?

  1. Improve O-Line play. Footwork and techniques must improve. Pass blocking must be taught and executed.

  2. Receivers need to work on route running and hands.

  3. More depth must be added for B-back position (pretty much a done deal).

  4. Linebacker and DB play must improve, expecially receiver coverage.

  5. Nesbitt must improve his passing accuracy and decision-making skills. (or we need to look at the young QB’s coming in)

  6. Coach Johnson will need to tighten up his bowl prep somewhat.

  7. BEAT UGA again!!

Go Jackets and thanks for a wonderful 2008 season!!

What happened to tek vs LSU was the officials actually called the chop block that Johnson claims to be legal. Once it was pointed out that the illegal block would not be tollerated, it was all downhill for the maggots. Once all the officials get the true definition of the block & call it, the little high school option will show Radavick or whatever his name is how much they’ve overpaid big mouth Johnson. Jaybo Shaw did very well against 2 poorly coached and “small” defenses this season. When he faced a LARGE athletic defense like North Carolina’s, he had difficulty also. LSU would have physically killed him if he had tried to drop back and pass or run with the ball. It would have been fumble-city and concussion-city. But, I will agree that Josh needs to improve his passing accuracy and decision making, or changes will need to be made next year. Hopefully, one of the new guys will push him or Jaybo will gain some size/muscle. Coach Johnson has forgotten more about football and player-decisions than you or I will ever know.

In regards to coaching decisions, all coaches make poor decisions at times, but this coach makes very few, and when he does, he admits them and is willing to adjust. Our problem this year was a very non-talented, non-athletic offensive line, and Josh was able to deal with this handicap better than Jaybo only because his feet are faster. Jaybo did very well against MSU and Duke, but LSU, UGA, and Miami would have been completely different stories.

Let’s not forget that two years ago, Tech finished the regular season 9-3 and eventually 9-5. I remember the many outcries about how the team was not prepared to play in the ACC championship game. Tech played well against West Virginia with a chance the win the Gator Bowl. Next year Tech finished worst with a mediocre QB that everyone thought would be good, but Gailey was verbally crucified by the upset fans. This year 9-3, and not ready for a practice game let alone playing LSU, and few negative comments. We just gave the coach a huge raise for doing basically what our previous coach accomplished. I think we’re all a crazy for not letting Johnson have some choice words too. Remember, CGailey’s whole time was under probation from the previous Athletic Administration, with 7 fewer recruits/year than other coaches were getting.

I didn’t like CGailey style of coaching nor his game strategy, but I also don’t like the fans giving PJohnson a pass either. His offense couldn’t move against a 7-5 team, and he’s told us he’ll never change what he does. So are we to accept what happened this year, as what to expect in the future?

Folk lore in college football becomes reality many times. A bunch of barbershop talk about Tech ,and the option offense, is typical around here and thank goodness we have a coach that sees an idiot as an idiot. Tommy Turberville at Auburn being fired is the other side of that equation. He was so unnerved by the idiots that he made drastic changes in mid season. Now the best ,most experts, can tell he has ruin a Auburn football program for quiet a while, along with Lowry who caused the unnerving. Alabama looked very normal and beatable last night, but Auburn is so far gone they will never have a chance to find out what normal is. Another move Tommy made from Mississippi to Auburn looks ill advised also. Mississippi is the third best SEC team and maybe the best next year. I am not sure Tuberville could have taken them where Nutt has but he sure took Auburn to places they hadn’t been in a while, and I would think Mississippi would have responded with more loyalty.

AlabamaRamblinwreck

Your right about the coaching decisions, every coach has his moments when he calls the unthinkable, the fake punt from the 22 yard line against LSU was one of them. Maybe work at Navy or division 2 but not in that type game. I was at a banquet last year and Vince Dooley was the guest speaker and was telling about a call he made where UGA was backed up to the 1 yardline and he called a qb keeper around left end qb got caught behind the line for a saftey. Monday morning Wally Butts was talking with Dooley about the game and when the subject came up Butts said I dont think i would have called the qb keeper around the end, Dooley said if i had all weekend to think about it i wouldn’t have either. Sometimes i don’t think we as fans realize how fast game speed really is, and how fast some of these coaching decisions are made. I think for the most part they all do extremely well.

Tech may do well next year with the option but i for one don’t see it being consistent without a passing game to go along with it. Get so far behind in a game you can’t run far enough to catch up, like the LSU game. Takes you out of your game plan. we’ll see.

Tech will always be a more difficult school, will always have higher SATs, and, most likely, will beat Georgia on occasion.

But make no mistake, you beat a very poor Georgia defense with a gimmicky offense and, as LSU so solidly proved, your defense is just as bad as Georgia’s.

Rings aside, you showed a lack of class in your win and obviously are not sure what to do when you win.

I won’t say we will beat you next year, who knows? The scoreboard proved you were the better team that day, but you are still a bunch of classless losers.

And finally, you are not a rival. Florida, who has owned the Dogs as of Late, and Tennessee are our rivals. You are a nuisance.

Line that up on your T Square and buzz off.

LSU recruits much better than GT, that’s no mystery. They had more talent on the field than we did. LSU finally played like LSU should have played all year. If UGA had brought their A-game like LSU, they might have beaten their in-state rival. LSU and UGA both have insane talent compared to GT…however…one team showed up…one didn’t…in both games.

If it were a matter of “solving,” that probably would have happened a long time ago.”

I couldn’t agree more. With superior personel and time to prepare, you are SUPPOSED to win. That’s why UGA should be ashamed this year, everyone knows they had superior talent in some of the games they lost.

Anyone who paid 5 minutes attention to college ball this year knows that the problem at LSU was at the QB position. They had nothing there. Why Miles didn’t get Jefferson on the field sooner is a mystery. One things for sure and that is if Jefferson had been playing against UGA the outcome would have been very different.

I was at the game, and there were more Tech fans at the game at the end than LSU fans, except for what appeared to be the student section in the lower end zone and the band. The LSU sideline was almost empty except for random Tech fans who probably upgraded their seats.

Also, Tech sold out their allotment in 4 business days, and LSU had to donate some of theirs to the military. Many of those seats in their upper end zone went unfilled throughout the game, while the Tech end zone was full.

Point being, you can try and be a smartaleck all you want, but facts are facts.

I never believed in karma until now. I’m a loyal UGA fan but have always been a closet Tech fan when they play anybody else. I’m proud of the universities and institutions in my home state. With that being said, I have never seen a more vile, classless, downright terroristic display of lowliness like I have seen from Tech fans (some even being close friends) since they beat UGA. And this is coming from a guy who has attended games in Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Baton Rogue and even Florida.

For the first time in my adult life I was cheering for Tech to lose against LSU. You have no idea how painful it is to root for the Tigers, but after everything I have seen and heard from the supposed “classier” Tech fans over the past two months, I couldn’t help but enjoy their destruction.

I doubt Tech could ever win me back after the garbage I have encountered, but they sure did make me realize how fortunate I am to be a Dawg first. So enjoy the win Jackets and please by all means get your frustrations and trashy behaviors all out of your systems now, because I don’t want to experience this again in another 10 years.

Hey Hiram….

Well put! I went to Emory, but most of my friends went to Tech…so I was actually a Tech fan in my younger days. I did some graduate work at UGA so now I pull for the Dawgs. Being a Georgian I also pull for Tech most of the time. However, I was very happy with the LSU game results for the following reasons.

I don’t understand the vandalism of the hedges at Sanford Stadium by the Tech fans and players. The defense of the vandalism is even worse.

Tech beat a UGA team, that had lost 19 of its players to season ending injuries, by a mere field goal. Not to make excuses, but the Dawg team they beat was not the one the pollsters chose as number one. From the absurd trash talking done by Tech fans you would have thought they steamrolled the number one team in the country.

Along with the trash talking, Tech fans used the victory over Georgia to start talking National Championship next year. Along the same ridiculous lines they contended the ACC was the best football conference in the country. I hope the LSU game has silenced at least some of that trash talk. Certainly the other bowl games have proven that talk as folly.

The trash talking, the rings, the silly arrogance over a 3 point victory, the hedges….. I cannot decide if it is all just childish stupidity or if it is really pathetic. Either way, it is not very becoming and makes it difficult to pull for my other home state team.

HeyHiram,

That’s probably the post of the very young year right there. I couldn’t agree more. I too have always pulled for Tech against anyone else, but dear Lord man, you would have thought Tech became world beaters after barely beating an obviously down UGA squad. And yes, the intense crudeness and vulgarity from these Tech fans is absurd. I had three neighbors who have lived on my street for years. Not close with them by any means, but know all their names and what they do for a living, etc. I sh*t you not, all three had brand new, shiny, still creased Tech flags hanging off their front decks for the first time within days after the UGA game. So clearly we’re talking about a group that knows nothing about loyalty and honor, and clearly just jumped on the bandwagon.

Vince, great post as well. I feel your pain too and I also believe we’re in the same boat. I think the Tech fans have been silenced for the most part. From their beatdown by a team that UGA defeated in their own stadium, to their ridiculous championship-less rings and retarded looking jerseys.

Well said to both of you!!! GO DAWGS!!!

Look, all the people complaining about CPJ’s arrogance, how our team mucked it up, etc.. if in August someone told you that we’d finish 9-4 and beat UGA.. you’d call them crazy. We had a good year!! Yes, we came out flat, and played horribly in the bowl game. But, to put it all in context - as Bobby Bowden said - if you’re not playing for a national championship, who cares? Now, I’m not happy we lost, or the way we lost. But, we should learn from this. I’d rather lose like this and learn from it, then beat some WAC team in a BCS game, and gear up NC hopes, only to fall flat on your doggie face..

To All Georgia Fans:

Lets face reality. Both UGA and GT have horrible fans that commit stupid and classless acts. On the flip side both teams have some great fans that anybody could like and get along with. I live in North Florida and see more ignorance and stupidity out of FSU and UF fans. Everybody should live with them for a year or two. They only think FSU and UF know how to play football and that the rest of the country is lucky if they beat them.

On the subject of the 2008 UGA team. UGA had a good team this year. The only difference from last year to this one is that the expectations made in the preseason ultimately would doom the team if they didn’t play for a National Championship. Last year UGA beat Florida, Auburn, & Tech. This year they lost to Florida, Alabama, & Tech. Early injuries plagued the team from the beginning of the season, but they were still good. Don’t say that your team wasn’t good, they just didn’t perform well in the bigger games.

My jackets didn’t even show up on New Year’s Eve and I can’t believe that they wore those dang navy jerseys. Navy blue is not a Tech color, it never has been one. Look on the univeristy’s website and see that the schools official colors and old gold and white, nothing elese. If you like the dark navy blue than go buy a dang Navy Midshipmen jersey and cheer for them. I was eager to see the gold jerseys on the Jackets on New Year’s Eve for the first time this season. It looks like I’ll have to wait next year to see them.

No fear,

Past performance of your coach at different schools does not mean diddly for future returns.

And, you will never be a rival in my mind. Our goal every year is to beat Florida, a superor opponent as of late, and Tennessee. In-conference, in-division RIVALS.

Yes, you are in-state nuisance. I will give you that.

You beat us. Scoreboard confirms it, so I will give all of you little bugs that. But you know it was by 3 points against an injury ridden, over-rated (yes, I agree to that), and pathetically coached (on the defensive side of the ball) team.

One 3 point win is just that. In 5 years we can all look back and see who is right or wrong, but at this point, you are dreaming.

Put that on a ring and wear it.

was out of the country over New Years, but was successful in programming my DVR to record the GT game. I started watching it, but couldn’t do so beyond the first possession of the game.

LSU looked like a hot knife, but GT looked more like snot than butter…I’m referring to the most nauseating uniforms I’ve ever seen GT wear.

Firstly, I’ve never liked this year’s version of old gold, which had a hint of green in it and looked sort of like anaerobic puss…it evoked memories of some unforgettable smells which usually followed incising a large abscess. I’ve tried to suppress this reaction to that peculiar color, but when they broke out the medium blue jerseys to play off of the purulent gold, I started getting sick. I couldn’t look at them for more than a few seconds at a time.

I have two questions…#1: where did the medium blue come from (a much darker blue is, in theory, a tertiary team color…but the last time it was heavily used was in the Bill Curry period which produced some rather wimpy teams), and #2: what would it take for the uniform committee (there must be such an entity) to admit that “old gold” does not equate to “snot yellow”, and for them to return to the gold that has been used from 1885 to 2007? How would one start an internet campaign to reset the team colors back to historic standards (and to a combination which could be looked at without inducing vomiting)?

I’m completely convinced that the team colors were responsible for the horrible loss. How could a team play efficiently if they couldn’t bear to look directly at their teammates and if they found resting their gaze on the other team’s uniforms a respite?

By rhmsi

January 4, 2009 5:54 PM | Link to this

The team colors were responsible for the loss? Really?

It wasn’t the gimicky offense that worked on Georgia?

It wasn’t the poor coaching?

It wasn’t the swiss D?

It wasn’t LSU dominating both sides of the ball?

It wasn’t the fact that Tech is not a very good team and the ACC got wiped all over the place in the bowls?

It wasn’t that the rings were the pinnacle of your season and the management majors didn’t have enough heart?

No, it was definitely the jersey colors.

(I do agree they were hideous. Gimmicky some might say. But your rings!!! They will look nice.)

Tech needs three things to take another step forward with our football team. A quarterback who can throw accurately to keep the defense honest, a much better punter and placekicker and a new defensive coordinator. I think the defensive talent was better than the results. Too many points allowed. A great coordinator can make a huge difference just look at what Bud Carson did in one year under Dodd and what he did leading the Steelers defense to three Super Bowl wins.

I totally agree with Steven M. Irby. The gold color of the jerseys, pants and helmets is a terrible shade of gold. Look at the gold pants that Dodd teams wore. The were bright and rich in color. Please change the shade to look like the classy gold of old. Also, the blue color is not one of our colors. We do not need surprises and uniqueness, just wear uniforms of our colors please.
