Who’s more motivated?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Bowl games often come down to which team is more excited to be there.
Watching Tech in Boise last year, CPJ said it was obvious the Jackets lacked enthusiasm.
CPJ and LSU’s Les Miles were asked about their teams’ motivation at the final press conference before tonight’s Chick-fil-A Bowl.
The question was aimed more at Miles, whose Tigers envisioned a BCS bowl after winning the national title last year.
Here’s what they said:
Les Miles: “I don’t know that anybody shoots for anything less than winning them all. I have to be honest, every team at the end of the year that’s had a great year plays in a bowl and that opportunity for victory and a bowl championship is truly the piece that we’re focused on.
“We practice with sincerity and you work at your business, you get to the back end of a bowl week, it doesn’t make any difference how sweet the environment’s been, and how much you enjoyed the time, the key is the game.
I’d be disappointed, like coach [Johnson], if our guys didn’t understand that fully and look forward to playing…I can tell you this is a nice bowl to be in and the want for victory to take into the offseason is very sincere. It does motivate your team into the spring. They enjoy coming off winning the last game. We’ve done that the last three years and certainly it’s been a springboard into a good recruiting season and a great spring.
“There’s plenty of motivation to play in this game.”
Here’s what CPJ said:
“Any time you get a chance to play against a quality opponent, for those people who are competitors, hopefully the juices are flowing and you’ll want a chance to measure yourself against that type of opponent. I think the bowl game is kind of an exclamation point on this season and can be a springboard into next year as well.
“You never know when you have the layoff what’s going to happen. I’d be really surprised and disappointed if our guys aren’t ready to play. I think they will be. Certainly, we’ve got a lot to play for and if we’re not ready, we’ll get embarrassed. That in itself ought to be enough motivation for our team.”
Tech comes in on a roll. The Jackets are 9-3 and have a chance to go 3-0 against the SEC. If Tech wins, there’s a chance it could end up in the Top 10. (Tech is ranked 14th now).
LSU, meanwhile, is 7-5 after losing four of its last six. But as Miles said, his LSU teams are 3-0 in bowl games and have used those wins to propel them into next season.
Players from both teams said all the right things this week, about how excited they are to be in this bowl game.
Which team do you think will be more fired up? Which team has more to play for?

I surely hope that the Jackets play a bit harder than they have in recent bowl games. I think they will, but they are also playing a team that has great potential. One more win and that’s a pretty good season.

Neither team will be as motivated as me. I can tell you that now. I’ve got a lot riding on this one.
I’m hoping for 350 or more rushing yards. And without getting into much detail, let me say that if we don’t get that, this old engineer may be on the run himself for a little while. But if we do… I’m done working for a living.

Did I fall for some internet trick by posting here? I’m learning.
As to what the writer has provided, I think Tech comes into this with more emotion and more at stake. LSU gave up on their season weeks ago. Tech is the more motivated team.
() Don;t forget about me (), I have no idea what you wrote. Sounds like a computer error to me. I’ve been getting those too. Can someone on this site fix this thing? I buy six papers a week and some of that money should go to fixing this site.

I think we will be more motivated because of the Tickle Pile that will be held at Grant Field after the game. Our players will be able to shower, dress and still get to the Tickel Pile. That will be great motivation but I wish they wouldn’t shower. I love sweaty bodies:-)

As GT DT Darryl Richard said recently, the team practices for bowls games under Gailey were brutal, and more akin to the grueling nature of Spring practices. So, according to Richard, under Gailey, GT rolled into bowl games beat-up, bruised and very unmotivated. Not this year.
Most players have commented on the great overall effectiveness of CPJ staying with the regular season practice schedule for bowl prep.
GT will be highly motivated to put an exclamation point on this season, and for the Seniors, their college careers.
As for LSU, their profound lack of TEAM motivation most of the year seems self-evident here. A bowl game with no big impact for LSU
The GT Seniors were THE bedrock of this team, in what has been a DEFINING YEAR for the GT program. I think the GT Seniors are gonna play with “legacy” in mind. GT players are gonna be HIGHLY motivated, and will play lights out on both sides of the ball. With more GT passing planned, GT offense will be geared-up for all the “new stuff” as well.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, AND THIS CAN NOT BE UNDER-STATED, THINK ABOUT HOW AWESOME IT’S GONNA BE WHEN THE RAMBLIN WRECK ROLLS OUT ON TO THE FIELD AT THE GEORGIA DOME
By the way, ESPN is predicting: GT: 44 LSU: 20
ESPN’s Mark May said: “The Wreck is gonna R-O-L-L!”

to me it comes down to maturity. tech w their win over uga has made their year. they can say other wise but thats just lip service. can they play with hunger or are they satisfied -win or lose this game they still beat uga-finally. Lsu not the season that they wanted after winning the national championship. can they overcome that knowledge and disappointment. maturity- focus, execution, excitement, hunger, physical play, … who wants it more. we will see tonight.

Not sure what your talking about, I guess it is some tech lore to build hate, but obviously you feel the rings are Bush league too.
It is like, geez, these guys really really really really are proud about winning a football game against an overated, flawned, somewhat unmotivated football team.

I cant predict the future but if you think this team wont be prepared for this game under CPJ you should stay at home. Give your tickets to some real fans. I still have a Gailey hangover but it hasnt blinded me from whats really going on! This coach is going to lose some games over the next number of years but the team as a whole will NEVER carry the weak a* defeatest attitude of that loser Gailey!! This team lost three games this year and in each of them, for those of you who keep up with the Jackets, there was a clear explanation or at least a reason! You never knew what the hell was going to happen with Gailey! All in all, there’s difference between losing and getting beat. Again, we’ll lose some games, but under this coach, we will never get BEAT! If you dont know what that means or cant understand how special the situation is on the flats right now then TO HELL WITH YOU AND GEORGIA!! Happy New Year Jackets!!!!!

Which team is more motivated? Hmmm….lets see here. Which team has already given out rings for a season in which it won absolutley no championships and suffered multiple losses? Its not LSU.
I think that answers the question Larry. Tech seems overjoyed by its historic 9-3 season. I guess they’ll still wear the rings if they go 9-4. They were probably expensive.

UGA you lost, so shut up, this game doesn’t change how you got beat. For the rest of us, we see how a great defense stops a gimmick offense. Yes, you can run up yards on weak defenses (like UGA’s), but LSU is not a bad team, they had a QB problem that led to most of their problems. Now they have one that can pass and run very very well. Tech had a wonderful regular season, but they weren’t ready to play LSU, and that’s the coaches fault. You can also see the difference between a coach that wins National Championships, and one that gives rings out for beating UGA. I’m tired of saying this, but we have a coach much like Tommy Bowden, much promise, but never quite gets there. In this day and time, if you can’t put a passing offense on the field, you won’t beat big, fast, talented defenses like LSU.

Still, I hate to see fans jumping off the wagon after one bad half of football. It is really bad right now, but this team had a great season and we should still be unashamed to say how proud we are of the things they achieved this season. I was worried for a while, that this would happen. All the good that the team created during the year (14th ranking) is lost in one half of football. I wonder if any of the recruits will back out of their commitments, and what happens if Tech has a losing season next year. PJohnson has 6 years on his contract. Do I have to wait another decade to see Tech win a big bowl game? I only felt this bad when they extended Chan Gailey’s contract. I probably won’t live long enough to see another Bobby Dodd success.

I don’t believe how badly Johnson is calling this game. Going on 4th an 8 his own 20, and giving LSU the ball at midfield, again. Man this is hard to take!! How many years does Johnson have on his extension? I’ll be retired before they can cut this guy free, and someone jumped on me for comparing our situation to what Notre Dame did. Where is that jackass, I want him give me some more wisdom.

Let’s see if I get this right (if not I’m sure a techie will correct me)… GT goes out and hires a new coach, they win 9 regular season games including a BIG win over in-state rival UGA (first win in eight years), RE-NEGOTIATE the new coach’s contract, get some big rings to commemorate what a truly extraordinary accomplishment it was to beat in-state rival UGA, then go out and lay an egg in the bowl game against a lower-tier (this year) unranked SEC team depriving them of a 10 win season and ultimately dropping them below UGA in the final polls. Yep! I’d say order has been restored in the universe. GO DAWGS!! GATA!!

Hope this is a lesson to PJohnson that bowl games aren’t rewards to a good season. It’s part of the recruiting wars and establishing both the team and the conference. Tech has embarrassed the ACC with their lackluster play. All of the other losses the ACC has had were very close. The stands were almost empty by the beginning of the 4th Quarter, on National TV. This is going to hurt the school, recruiting, and the psyche of the team going into next year. Incompetence is unacceptable in any profession, and this game showed a lot of that for the whole coach staff of Tech.

Les Miles has no class at all.
Leaving your Seniors in the game, when it is already won, is simply trying to run up the score. Then an LSU player gets his knee blown out when he should have been substituted so the young LSU players can play in “their” bowl game.
Les Miles’s ego is more important than his player’s health.
What a moron for a Head Coach.

The only part of GT that is embarassing are you dainty little ship-jumpers who post negative blogs after every setback. All programs have ups and downs, but true fans stick with their team, and show support regardless of whether things are going good or bad. I am proud of this teams accomplishments in this first year of Coach Johnson’s tenure, which I hope is a long and illustrious one. Every coach should be allowed at least 4 years to establish his program. If you can’t be supportive of coach and players, then I for one wish you would just get lost, or find an activity which better suits your temperament, like collecting stamps.

YOU CAN TELL WHO WAS USE TO PLAYING ON CENTER STAGE. THIS SUCKS!

The ACC is a second tier conference. Our win against UGA was a fluke…due more to UGA’s poor year than our play.
Gimmick offenses are good the first time around. But eventually someone will show how to beat it and LSU just did. I hope Johnson has something else up his sleeve.

The worse thing about the game was that not only did tech embaress the ACC but that they embaressed the Great State of GEORGIA. Tech needs to stick to games against teams like Gardner Webb.

For three quarters I admired the coaching job Les Miles has done. But when he threw those long passes in the 4th quarter with a 35 point lead, I realized once again why fertile women shouldn’t engage in anal sex. Dawgs, in the future, I’ll root for you against that bush leaguer.

Paul Johnson - ACC Coach of the Year - Sounds about right. They got their necks rung by the SEC. Tech Sux, just like always. Nothing changed. And for the comment about UGA, we did destroy LSU in their house. Tech’s offense will dry up in 2009. Geaux Tigers and Dawgs. Still cracking up at Tech. Once a nerd, always a nerd.

Normally I’m not a Tech basher but after suffering through their fans BS the past few weeks over the first loss to them in 8 years, and a 3 point loss at that, I have to say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching them get drilled on national TV. The novelty of this offense is gone now so buckle up Tech fans, it’s going to get rough.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Tech still blows chunks. Yeah you beat UGA this year. WOW, once in a blue moon. 1 time in 8 years against Richt. We’ll run off another 7 straight starting next year. The North Avenue Trade school is not even a blip on our radar and yet you guys have rings made for your players posting a 45-42 victory over UGA. PATHETIC!!!!
Nice to see the SEC start the beatdown early on ACC schools in bowl games. Vandy over BC and a total a$$ wiping (yeah thats wiping, not whipping) by a mediocre LSU team this year. Just wait til next year when teams figure out that gimmick of an offense. If Tech can’t pass the ball, and they can’t, it will be a long year next year for the nerds.
What a great start to the New Year. Eat crow bastiges!!

This just shows that the GT win over GA was a FLUKE. Everthing went right for GT that day and that was the only way they could win. GA put up 52 points on LSU and the lowly GT offense could only manage 3 on the same defense! GA will kill Michigan State tomorrow and we will know which team is the best in Georgia!

Techies welcome to what we have to play every week.No excuses for our(UGA)tackling in the 4th quarter against you.But we had a load of injuries or we would have done the same thing to you.We had you on the ropes in the 1st half until our reciever ran the wrong read on the int. that you returned for a td.That was the turning point in the game.We did deserve to lose but not because you were better, but because we were not coached as well as we should have been.WE stopped full contact drills because of so many injuries.Big mistake. You got a break this year but look for 7 more beat downs in a row!Cherish your rings for beating UGA.It may be your last for awhile!!!

In case someone missed it, Tech beat Georgia this year. Way to go! One win every 8 years is OK by me. And, yes, 45-42 does sting, but I wonder if it stings more than 51-7 did a few years ago?
Now, on to the a*-pasting LSU just put on you.
Must hurt, huh?
Way to represent our state. Letting a bunch of inbreds from the Bayou come into your back yard and kick you around like yesterday’s trash.
The Chick-fil-A Bowl representatives surely did a good job picking Tech because of their “passionate fan base”.

AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!! Loved the looks on Paul “Tiny” Johnson’s fat face tonight! He’s the coach of the year, right? The PERFECT OPTION! Why do you guys want to get rid of him now? He’s going to give you national championships every year, right? Way to score a fieldgoal. That was an AMAZING performance on national television! Thank you for the late Christmas present, and the perfect start to the new year! My SIDES HURT I LAUGHED SO HARD!!! I don’t even care that we lost to y’all this year, because even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes! And here’s the kicker: After we beat Michigan State tomorrow, we’re going to end the season ranked higher than you!!!! How does that feel??? So enjoy looking at those hopelessly pathetic “we beat UGA by three points, that’s OUR championship” p*nis rings, and try to remember the fun times of beating UGA, and not the very REAL BUTT KICKING (aka, not by three points) you took in front of the ENTIRE nation. Have fun nursing that hangover and watching us jump you in the polls tomorrow! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! P.S.- LSU JUST SCORED AGAIN! P.S.S.-TECH JUST FUMBLED AGAIN! HAHAHAHA!!!

Great win for the LSU Fightin’ Tigers…all that puff press GT got the last four weeks swelled their head up and pi$$ed off LSU-bad move, just ask Miami in the 2005 Peach Bowl. Everyone forgets that Les is best when following up a loss (or in this case, 3 losses UGH)…as to the 4Q fake punt-better learn how to stop it. Deep throws-working on the offense for ‘09-better learn how to stop it. GT better find a QB that can throw the ball and WRs who can catch or 2009 will be a bad year. We showed the rest of the ACC how to stop the triple option.
As for all you UGA fans who keep saying that y’all whipped us…your OFFENSE only scored 38 points-same as ours. Those two pick-6s were the difference. Take THOSE away and YOU LOSE!! Jarrett Lee WILL NOT be throwing those to y’all next year, but Jordan Jefferson will be throwing bombs and breaking ankles in Athens. GEAUX TIGERS!! FEAR THE HAT IN 2009!!
