Embarrassed in the Dome

There’s no other way to put it: Tech got embarrassed by LSU.

It was 35-3 at halftime, 38-3 after three, and that was the final.

The Jackets made a ton of early mistakes. In the first half they roughed the passer, fumbled a punt, failed on a fake punt from their own 22, and got burned by an onside kick.

Josh Nesbitt missed open receivers. The defense got run over. It was Tech’s biggest halftime deficit since trailing Georgia 34-0 in 2002.

LSU looked more powerful, more prepared.

Did this dismal performance by Tech shock you?

Does it diminish what Tech accomplished this season?

And what did you think of LSU’s fake punt with under 10 minutes to go?

I’ve said plenty on another blog, so I won’t repeat. I’m extremely disappointed in both coaching staff and team (no heart). I think there will be lasting affects on the team, and future recruiting. The team gave a top 15 ranking, and that should not have happened. It does point out that LSU had a weakness (pass defense), and Tech was unable to exploit it like UGA did. Going forward PJohnson had better design a passing attack to go with his option. He better recruit some receivers, as LSU pointed out that they don’t have any.

Sure…I was shocked. I think Tech was just flat. However, you can’t take anything away from LSU. LSU played great and Tech did not. Tech had a bunch of bad plays and they could not execute. Tech had a bad game…and that’s all it was…a bad game!

Tech has nothing to hang their heads about. We ended up being 9-4 and we beat FSU and UGA. What could you be upset about? We were picked to win 3 or 4 games and we won 9.

Regardless, I am proud of Tech and CPJ. We beat the barking humans and we had a great year.

From 2008 to 2009 GO JACKETS!!! AND THWG.

How bout it? How crowded is the Paul Johnson bandwagon now? He doesn’t care. He cased in on his three point win, and you guys have got to live with it for seven more years or pay him off. That triple option is unstopable!

Yes, Tech looked overmatched and underprepared. None of the “breaks” went our way on top of the fact we got beat by a better coached and prepared team today. But in the end. We weren’t supposed to be anything this year. We won 9 games and won in Athens. Sure today stunk, but in a week or so, we still beat more SEC teams than which we lost. You have to admit even after today, Tech fans can feel better tomorrow than the Mutts can who were supposed to win it all and be playing next Thursday night, not tomorrow. Good job to the team and thanks for a great year overall. Keep building on this season next year.

LSU Coach is lacks class: fake punt, long pass plays when you’re up by 41! And leaving in the 1st stringers (so they can get hurt, like that one guy)!? Why not let the younger players and their families get some enjoyment out of the game instead of seeing your son sitting on the bench? That coach is a sad example…

Hey Mikey, We still beat UGA…

Seems to me CPJ treated this like an exhibiton game instead of a post season game. Why do you try to put in a brand new part of the offense in 2 weeks and try to run it against a formidable opponent? Seems to me they should have put in a new special teams…opening kickoff out of bounds, muffed punt, horrible kickoff returns including playing your front linemen off the 40 (they were on the 45), and 2 or 3 horrible punts giving them great field position. I say the special teams gave them at least 21 points.

I hope this isn’t a look at next year’s team…

You win 1 game in 8 years against UGA, by 3 stinking points, and then beat your chest, make commemorative rings, and proclaim you have a superior progra, a better coach, better recruits, and a better conference. Then get punked by a 3 and 5 SEC team. Reality’s a fickle beeatch, ain’t it?

O’ contraire Larry, there are other ways to put it: humiliated, humbled, exposed, exploited, creamed, crushed, destroyed, trashed, trampled, smashed, slaughtered, shamed, disgraced, throttled, shown up, thrown down—should I go continue?

I must say that even I found the fake punt to be in poor taste, though I thought rings commemorating a 3 pt. win over UGA were pretty tacky too, as is ripping up the hedges when Tech finally won a game (first in eight tries), sooooo, I guess it is true about karma.

Happy New Year Dawg fans!

I wish Willie Martinez could take lessons from the LSU defensive coordinators to see how a real defensive coach prepares. This made Willie look worse than ever. I wonder if Michigan can score above 35 points in the Cap bowl. We can now see how pitiful the Georgia defense was prepared for an average GT team. WE ALL REALLY KNOW THAT WILLIE NEEDS TO GO.

What exactly did Tech accomplish this year? Just asking? Beating a UGA team and having rings made for it? You can’t spell PATHETIC without T..E..C..H!!!! UGA measures a successful season by winning the EAST, playing in SEC Championship games and BCS games. Tech measures it by beating UGA. Sounds about right. LOSERS!!!

Tonight’s embarrassing loss proved that the win over Georgia was a FLUKE … another blind hog finding an acorn. Future opponents will study LSU’s defense tonight and Georgia’s first half performance and results will be different unless Paul Johnson can refine his spread offense and recruit QBs who can pass as well as handoff and run.

This game only proves how bad UGA defense played. They need to get rid of Soft Willie. 9 out of 10 match ups pick the SEC over the ACC. Remember Techs goal is only to beat UGA. No ACC Champs No National Champs and apparently No Bowl game. 38-3 but hey at least you got those rings! 1 out of 8 and you buy rings. That speaks volumes for the program.

Les Miles, ACC Coach of the Capitol Bowl week.

By dawgh8er4ever

December 31, 2008 11:20 PM | Link to this

I think Tech had a great season. Keep in mind they are the youngest team in the ACC, and the learned a new offense. LSU had an established offensive line, skill positions, minus the quarterback, and pretty much a good defense, they looked good tonight compared to what they looked like against Alabama, UGA, Troy, etc. I’m not worried on the lasting effects of this ONE game. Any team can be beat on any given day, just ask UGA, I believe they were up 18 at halftime against Tech back in November, and look what happened.

As far as the fake punt is concerned, whatever, so bush-league Les Miles is an A$$-hole!!!

CPJ better be glad he got his new contract before this game. This was a disgrace and very poorly coached game on the part of the Jackets. I give you credit doggies, you didn’t make rings when you finally beat Florida last year. Oh yeah, you got your clocks cleaned by them again, this year. If I was so inept at beating a team (Florida), I wouldn’t brag so much on Tech losing. Les Miles doesn’t take to losing, so remember that the next time UGA plays LSU. You might be happy with 38-3, you know like making the Alabama game seem closer than it really was.

Clearly the “easy” practice schedule Coach Johnson exercise bit them in the a**. It was apparent by how ridiculously underprerpared they were… I hope this is a lesson to CPJ and his staff. This is POST SEASON, not a “reward”. Sure, getting a bowl game deserves some praise, but you have to take care of business and prove that you were deserving of that “reward”. And this performance says otherwise…. It’s performances like this, along with UNC, Miami, and BC, that give critics ammunition to bash the ACC. I am thankful that Tech managed 9 wins in its first season with a new coach, but lord almighty CPJ…. Welcome to the big leagues. Hope you learn from this lesson and apply it in the future.

Tech beats UGA once in 8 years and gets rings made. How hilarious is that. Rings are made for ‘once in a lifetime event’, like graduation, National Championships, Super Bowls,Etc. Only tells me that GaTech players & coaches don’t expect any more wins against UGA. I will admit that if you come out and don’t play Tech can beat you, like UGA did in the 2nd half. But is you take them seriously (Grambling,LSU) well, you know the rest.

I hope Paul Johnson had the stones to tell the team in his post-game address that he got out coached. I was worried about this three weeks ago when CPJ said that bowl games were rewards and thus the practice for them shouldn’t be too demanding. I don’t think this team was anywhere close to being properly prepared.

I posted on this blog earlier in the week that I was worried Les Miles would use this game as a springboard for next year just like Nick Saban did with Bama last year and that we would come out flat. That is exactly what happened.

The only positive that we can possibly take from this game is that our coach has far more class than Les Miles.

As an Atlantan, I was pulling for Tech. Embarassement is almost an understatement. I actually blame Paul Johnson. And I think he’s a good coach. First off, should have received the opening kick-off (said out loud at the time). Run the ball, burn the clock, score first. Bad play calling, fake punt was very ill-advised. I guess he was trying to answer Miles creativity. Totally got away from what Tech does best, dictate! Tech was flat! Almost negated Tech’s whole season! I hope he learned something from this.

Coach Johnson would be the first to tell you that if the O line doesn’t block then the offense isn’t going to work. LSU just matched up in a way that very few teams will. Their D was big, fast and played with a huge chip on their shoulder. Early in the game Jones and Dwyer got pitches out in space that were going for TD’s against other teams. LSU hit and tackled better than any other team we’ve seen this year. Their linebackers and secondary also beat us up pretty good.

On D, you have to give credit to their O line and QB. Our D line didn’t get enough pressure when he dropped back and we rarely tackled Jefferson when he scrambled without him getting at least 8 yards. Our secondary, which has been young and very weak all year, was fully exposed. Watching our secondary have to tackle their RB was painful.

No question that Tech played very poorly, but LSU came out looking like a team with something to prove. Tech will need to recruit more size and speed if we hope to run with the big boys.

This game was horrible. Tech looked like a bad jv squad. Tech’s fake punt was the dumbest call I can ever remember seeing. Offense, defense, special teams got worked over. Apparently 1 win over UGA so intoxicated tech that the rest of the season didn’t matter. This shows that GT is still not big time. Act like you expect to win a rivalry game and show up for your season finale. Sure, it’s only one game, but we took about as big of a step backwards as a program can take in 1 game. To spin this and say that Tech really had a great season and at least they beat UGA and that they shouldn’t be as disappointed as UGA is petty for a program that wants to move forward.

TechFan,

Florida is playing for the National Championship…LSU was not. We were soundly beaten by a National Champion back in November. Tech was thoroughly thrashed by a team that Geargia thumped pretty hard. There is a difference. Be proud and enjoy your ring.

I have met a lot of GT Engineers that while being very smart, don’t seem to be able to get out of the rain because of a lack of common sense. TechFan you appear to fit that mold.

First, I want to point out that the majority of negative posters here are the bitter dog fans. They were burnt by Tech and now somehow feel that they got revenge? Yes, in their warped minds this makes sense.

Second, I want to point out the complete lack of class by LSU (and the SEC in general). LSU fans were already taunting the GA Tech fans in the pre-game parade. How low can you go? I saw none - not one - Tech fan say or do anything negative to any LSU fan: before, during, or after the game. Why is it that LSU (and SEC) fans are so very low class? And, why are they like this regardless of a win, a loss, or even before the game?

I would rather lose every single game than ever have a reputation like LSU and their fans.

I was disappointed by the mistakes GT made, but am proud of how this team played this year, and of course beat GA. The fake punt from our own 22 has no explantion.

Remember, 16 of 22 starters are freshmen or sophmores. GT was simply outmanned. LSU had a HUGE size & experience advantage at the O & D Lines.

9-3, beat GA, and a bowl game is still is significant achievement…with mostely freshmen & sophmores, totally new coaching staff with totally new system to learn, laundry list of injuries, and lack of depth and limited scholarships.

Yeh, it was a year of profound overachievement.

To Coach Johnson, his staff, and the GT football team, THANKS FOR NOTHING. That was PATHETIC. I hope we find a QB to get rid of Nesbitt, he’s AWFUL. Thanks for ruining my New Year’s Eve. Next Year, if you don’t want to play, stay the hell home, LOSERS.

To the Georgia fans on the site, SHUT THE HELL UP YOU MORONS. I thought you were supposed to play in the NC game, not the CITRUS you LOSERS.

I’m from GA and got offers to go to both schools and I cheer for both, but it makes me sick to listen and hear for all the Dumba$$ GA fans who never went to the school, let alone couldn’t find Athens on a map(let alone the state of GA). Old GT nut- It’s 9-4. Yeah, you beat UGA, but you lost to Virginia. You almost losst to Gardner Web. You would have lost to FSU except for a miracle fumble. And you gave your coach a seven year contract extension and a million dollar raise. Then you got humiliated on national TV. And if UGA wins tomorrow, they will finish the year ahead of you in all the polls. Profound achievment?

By Puppy Dawg

January 1, 2009 1:19 AM | Link to this

I tried telling you in the blog after the UGA game….and you didn’t listen. This IAA offense will pay dividends in the beginning, but the big boys will catch on quickly and will be fully prepared for you each and every Saturday. Johnson’s performance diminished each year against the same Syracuse, Temple, Army, Rice, Rutgers…etc schedule.

Gordon made a good point above. Calm the F__k down. Stop worrying about beating UGA and worry about the ACC teams that will be much more prepared to shut you down as LSU did tonight. You need to worry about your conference opponents much more than a single game at the end of the season. I know its hard for you to swallow, just as we do in Athens when we play Florida, but UGA just doesn’t see you as a real threat/rival until you show up consistently. Good luck next year b/c appears you jumped the gun signing PJ to this long wealthy extension. And, if you actually believe there will be a passing attack involved in the future, you’re dead wrong. Take a look at 2002-2006 Navy film. It’s the same old Ga Southern option offense year in and year out. I see mediocre 7-5 seasons from here on out.

By longtimedawg

January 1, 2009 1:20 AM | Link to this

Same ole TECH showed up today! they are more worried about rings to celebrate the UGA win than playing football. this game shows that by end of next season good teams will defend the option attack that P johnson likes so much. if this offense was so effective…why did all the schools who ran it (and won National Championships) back prior to 1990 quit running it. Once the modern day type coaches see it enough it will be stopped and Tech will return to 5-6 seasons again! Leopards don’t change there spots. Once a loser always a TECH loser! ONE win in 8 yrs over UGA don’t change anything …as was proven tonight in the chicken bowl.

“ranked higher academically that uga EVER will”????? Are you kidding me? Is that all you have? I notice from my Tech friends that when they lose, they tend to always throw education in as a defense. Are you really stooping so low as to mud-sling degrees at us? Is that why I find so many unemployed engineers unsatisfied with their lives obtaining MBAs from GA State?

For Those About To Rock: We honestly don’t care at this point in the season. We got over it on Monday morning. I know it’s difficult for you to understand, but one loss in a game we should have won really doesn’t burn us up. We just don’t consider a team we consistently beat to be a rival. Ask the scalpers. They get the same demand for Tech tix as the Vandy game. We just don’t care. Honestly, your team bores us.

By Tampa Wreck

January 1, 2009 1:44 AM | Link to this

Wow.. We go our asses kicked big time. I knew that LSU had a lot of talented players, and was very aware that we could lose this game, but I can’t say I saw this coming. The defense, special teams, and coaching were all pathetic.

I don’t think you can legitimately hang this whipping on the spread option. It was anemic tonight, but the plays were there on the offensive side, we just didn’t execute them. Dropped touchdown on the opening drive by Thomas was just one example, and Josh made too many bad throws on routes that were open.

CPJ has to seriously look at how he prepared team for this game. To those that try to spin this as something that will help us in long run, I couldn’t disagree more. This all but erases the progress that we made this year. Losing is always tough, but getting your tails handed to you in a nationally televised game on New Years Eve by a mid level SEC team will severely impact recruiting. If nothing else, we gave ammunition to those that will continue to say that our offense is a gimmick that will not work at this level.

I am still optimistic regarding the direction of the GT program (although not nearly as optimistic as I would have been if we had showed up for tonights game). I still think CPJ is a good coach. I hope he learned tonight that it isn’t all about the offensive system. We need to play defense and we need decent special teams play. While the offense improved through the year, our special teams play as been hapless since day one and our defense was clearly exposed the second half of season. Let’s hope we can improve all areas of play next year, not just the offense.

ACC 5 Bowl Losses, but none worse than Georgia Tech being so dumb as to call a fake punt at it’s own 22-yard line in the 2nd Quarter (instant LSU TD) for Tech’s 4th and Dumb leading to the 3-38 final score.

3 fumbles and an interception, nice Georgia Tech. ACC appreciates that. So, does UGA, who plays in 2009, while Tech languished in the Peach Bowl against the 1st SEC team to even play a bowl game this season.

This is nothing new for Georgia Tech and their high school offense and quarterback and receivers.

Tech Lost to unranked BCS rated Number 40 LSU who came into the game 7-5.

Tech Lost to unranked BCS rated Number 51 Virginia who is 5-7.

Tech Lost to unranked North Carolina 7-28.

Tech Lost to unranked LSU 3-38.

Did I mention you beat Garner-Webb 10-7 at your house ?

So, Georgia Tech who came into the 3-38 embarrassing Peach Bowl “appearance” Ranked Number 16 in the BCS West Coley Matrix, must hope that UGA loses to Michigan State, or else UGA will end up Ranked Higher than Georgia Tech for the 8th Consecutive Season in the Final AP Poll.

Number 16 Georgia Tech BCS Wes Coley Matrix, UGA Number 13.

Number 16 Georgia Tech BCS Anderson-Hester Seattle Times Poll UGA Number 13.

USA Today Coaches’ Poll Georgia Tech 15, UGA 17.

AP Poll Georgia Tech 14, UGA 17.

Harris Interactive Georgia Tech 14, UGA 17.

Obviously, Georgia Tech has had real problems this season again losing to unranked football teams.

Hey Georgia Tech, you Lost to unranked LSU 3-38, you Lost to unranked North Carolina 7-28, and you Lost to unranked Virginia who ended their season with a Losing Record; that’s not impressive and you know it.

5th ACC Bowl Loss.

UGA can have 10 Wins this season, and we would then have accomplished this too 6 of the Last 7 Seasons, while Georgia Tech has been denied its 10 Win Season, and in fact Georgia Tech has not won 10 games any season now 10 Years in a Row.

If UGA can win its New Year Day’s Bowl Game against Number Michigan State, UGA will end the season ranked ahead of Georgia Tech for the 8th Consecutive Season, every year of The Coach Richt Era.

Nice.

For those of you who think that the LSU fake punt was in poor taste, I ask that you note the blatant and potentially career ending chop block commited by Tech earlier in the game. There was an uneasy feeling here all week as I got the impression fans had forgotten how talented LSU is on their roster. Maybe the most in the U.S. or in the same category as Texas, UF, USC…They also wanted to make up for a subpar season primarily due to a lack of QB play or inconsistent play. That said Tech should’nt be too down after a good season under a new regime in the first year. We won 5 or so games by less than 7 points and loss 2 games by the same amount. We now have to learn to string more than two victories together against tough teams, like take them one at a time. The coaching staff and particularly Johnson seem to learn fast and surely will correct future bowl strategies. STill need to figure how to incorporate the passing game into this option. My feeling is to look over the Fridge’s highlights who used some play action and option actacks but it’s really just executing ie..getting the ball to the receiver and them catching it and enough pass blocking to have time. Also to adjust to the talent on the field…Nesbitt was critical in most of our close games and most of this team is still young and this was their first bowl game played. Recruiting is going well now two years in a row. My hats off to LSU as they have rebuilt and now have a QB and should be top 10 next year. Les Miles sure knows how to win at LSU.

There were 2 chop blocks called during the game; 1 by GT and 1 by LSU. As a GT fan, I could care less if Miles tried to score 100 points on GT. It’s GT’s job to stop them. What I can’t figure out is how Miles could be so inept as to finish 7-5 in the regular season with all the talent I saw tonight.

Advice to Ugay fans: better figure out how to get Richt to can Willie M. LSU stuffed GT with co-DC’s who had already taken jobs elsewhere before the game. Willie had 2 weeks to do the job and failed miserably. I wouldn’t count on Willie D. doing any better next year against UF or GT for that matter.

First, to the LSU fans defending the Tigers’ mid-4Q fake punt leading by 35, forget it. It was a shockingly unsportsmanlike display by Les Miles, period. (Did you notice the “curt” postgame coaches handshake at mid-field?)

Our Jackets played unprepared and uninspired in this CFB w/ national audience (including my wife and son in attendance.) An awful example, just a failure, in ending an otherwise uplifting and promising season…but it’s not over ‘till it’s over.

This reveals our ‘many’ challenges to becoming a true Div 1A top competitor.

I too was concerned by the casual “reward” preparation tone CPJ set for this game, in obvious contrast to LSU’s plan. The Jackets didn’t show up to play a high-powered game, but the Tigers did. Inexcusable.

We have eight months now, and from top-to-bottom a lot of work to do. Go Jackets!

We need to stop trying to find the silver lining in this. There’s no reason to believe the triple option will work next year unless we include a passing game.

This loss set the program back. Yeah, when Paul Johnson gets his own recruits, the offense will work even better. How is he going to get highly touted recruits when we were exposed like this on National TV?

Well I guess I just don’t understand why when you have a lead in the 4th quarter so many people expect you to stop trying to score. When you do try to score, they say its poor sportsmanship. If that is the way the Techies feel then let me as an LSU fan apologize for continuing to play football in the fourth quarter instead of just handing the jackets the football in a gesture of mercy. This wasn’t a Pop Warner League game so I didn’t realize that LSU was supposed to stop playing football with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. You know, GA Tech could have actually stopped us on the fake punt!

I was spared the agony of watching this since I am in Spain. Tech still had a great season, far better than I dreamed with wins over FSU , Miami, and of course, the dawgs. It looks like Tech does need a more effective passing attack to go with its fine triple option offense, as others have said above. THEY ARE A VERY YOUNG TEAM AND SHOULD BE BETTER NEXT YEAR.

I see the trash-talkers are back.

To the obscene yellowblood: Why don’t you retire your red-neck pathetic soul to your trailer and try unsuccessfully to make love to your cousin-wife; failing that, put on the Deliverance music and get it on Dawgie Stlye with her brother Dixie Wrecked while admiring your 6th grade diplomas on the wall. To Pointed Head Bug, jimmy, BuLLdawg, Dawg34, dawginit and other trash-talking dawgs: You dawgs are understandably so depressed because Bobby Dodd still holds the record of 8 straight wins over the dawgs that you must resort to trash talk. I realize that your are still recovering from getting your A*******ES whipped red, black, and blue by Bama and the Gators and by your underchieving failure to live up to your pre-season #1 ranking, so you compensate by trash-talking. The Jackets still hold a 2-1 edge over the SEC this year. While Richt has been your coach, you have led the nation in criminal arrests, attacks on teachers, and rapes in the dorm. The ACC leads the nation in graduation rates while the SEC is last. So don’t come on our blog and trash talk or you will get it back in spades!

StingDoc, It is true that we pointy heads are superior to the Canines to the South East. Our campus grew up in the shadow of a Frank Gordy Tire Re-Capping Plant to a sure enough bona fide trade school on North Avenue. I are proud. Another shining star in our Doddastic history was when under the sanctimonious leadership of Goodie Two Shoes Bill Curry, we stole tight end Tyrone Sorrells from UGA where he was being schooled in Remedial Reading. After upgrading with a superior education and leaving our proud campus, he worked in the Stephens County School System as a Custodial Engineer driving a mop down the corridors of Stephens High School. And we do have the moral ground on UGA, especially with having had a fine leader of men as former coach Honest George O’Leary. And I now read in the Pointy Head Gazette that Reggie Ball can now count to 4! (Three out of four attempts) We should be so proud. Let us put a positive spin on losing to a second tier SEC team by 35 points…it is good that we didn’t win 10 games this year. Reggie has difficulty with numbers above 3 and would not understand the significance. Scoring only 3 is not such a bad number; think positive, it was the points spread against UGA and Gardner Webb. I thought we should add a passing game to an offense that sooner or later the big boys were going to figure out how to stuff, but you have to have a QB who can throw and receivers who can catch. I was hoping that we had a real coach and team, but I guess not. Now I am convinced that the win over UGA was a fluke against an injury depleted defense with a D coach with no imagination. Next year will be a disaster. Get a real coach.

So UGA fans are over the loss to GT and don’t see Tech as a real rival? Why, then, are UGA fans lining up around the block to comment on the Tech blog after last night’s GT loss?

Terrible game for Tech but LSU played inspired football and their quarterback looked great. As well as they played, their coach detracted from their performance with a total lack of class in the 4th Quarter. It says something about the character of the Tech defense that they didn’t mail it in in the 4th and held LSU scoreless despite Miles’ efforts. They must have been dog-tired (I wonder how that expression originated) after all the time they spent on the field but they still worked their butts off ‘til the end of the game. And I thought Morgan Burnett played a great game. It’s too bad he didn’t inspire the offense to do the same.

I look forward to next year. Paul Johnson and the team will learn a lot from this beating and I imagine it will pay off when Tech has a full complement of players and the freshmen and sophomores have the benefit of another year’s experience.

I guess they will change the rings to 38-3 since that was their last game as seniors. Never seen so many tech wear since I have been in Atlanta for ten years. Looks as if they are a bunch of frontrunners and only come out when things are good. Tech fans were gone by the end of the 3rd quarter. That offense will not work consistantly against BCS caliber teams once they have seen it enough. You will have a winning record in the ACC and may beat UGA occasionaly but will not be a yearly top 15 team. Congrats on a good season but act like you should be there. The ACC is not the BIG 12 or SEC!!!!

LSU has a real SEC defense and mentality. Georgia has Willie Martinez. Coach Richt must develop a different attitude to rise above the accepted mediocrity Georgia now enjoys … Good but not best. In the LSU defense … we saw passion, we saw discipline, we saw tremendous effort. In the Georgia defense we did not see any of these things when they played Tech. If Michigan isn’t stopped today by the Dawg defense … Willie needs to go immediately. Does anyone on this blog really believe Willie deserves to be the Dawgs defensive coordinator after this year? Let people know … Willie must go!!!

Georgia Tech has now failed to win a Bowl Game on New Year’s Day 10 SEASONS in a row, dating all the way back to 1999 and no win on New Year’s Day.

Coach Richt has never ended any season ranked worse than Georgia Tech in the Final AP Poll now 8 seasons in a row with a Win by UGA today New Year’s Day 2009 over Number 18 Michigan State, dating all the way back to his first season here at UGA in 2001.

Your Academic Progress Rate, APR, at the Georgia Institute of Technology of your football team is WORSE than UGA’s football team’s APR.

You have not had a 10-Win Season in 10 Consecutive Years.

Tech will have Lost 1 more game playing a far easier schedule than UGA, with an UGA Win today New Year’s Day on ABC - and, included in those 4 Losses by Tech this season are inexplicable Losses to unranked 5-7 Virginia, an unranked 7-5 team who throttled your high school offense 38-3 last night, and an unranked North Carolina team who slaughtered your high school offense 28-7.

Since 1 January 2000, this millennium, this century, this decade, Georgia Tech has now been in 10 bowl games winning but 3 weenie bowl games. And, you have Lost 7 bowl games since 1 January 2000.

And, for good measure Georgia Tech played at home against a Gardner-Webb football team who has a Losing Record of 5-6 whom you were able to blister with your high school offense 10-7.

The ACC now has 5 Bowl Losses, and The SEC Zero (0) Bowl Losses.

As for the NERDS needing to pass the football and Paul Johnson learning how to do that next year, you have zero receivers and zero quarterbacks, as every 1 of them quit the program when you 1st hired Paul Johnson because in his Eighty-Seven (87) games as a head coach, he has NEVER PASSED THE FOOTBALL.

He has, however, faked a punt from his own 22-yard line in the 1st half of a Bowl Championship Subdivision Bowl Game. God Almighty Above, is that DUMB.

You have now Lost 4 Bowl Games Georgia Tech in a ROW.

Second all you bandwagon jumpers stay off yall are a joke gaily would have had this team in the blue bowl. third no one on here has a clue about this offense when cpj gets his offensive line in place doesnt matter how big or fast a defense is if it is blocked right it works and always will. This was UGA s best chance at beating cpj and its not gunna happen for along time and how soon all you people forget that you dont have to throw the ball when you run it for 400 yards one game doesnt take back all they did during the season. Yes it was ugly but go back and watch the replay if you can and look how many blocks our line missed. so good luck and yall people are crazy if you think mich state will beat ga beat the house on ga. this is coming from a realistic fan who knows football 09 will be better than 08 for cpj and tech football. basketball dont get me started the uga tech basketball game will be the worst basketball game in history of the sport

Seems to me I remember you guys whooping it up after beating Fla for maybe the 2nd time in like FOREVER. It’s just unfortunate we didn’t get to play a powerhouse like HAWAII in our bowl game. As for the game, the better prepared and more talented team won. I think the long layoff after the Ga win was a big part of the problem. The young Jackets had too long to read about how good they already were, while LSU had to read how they were down and out with no chance to win the game. I think this will be a good lesson for the jackets for next year. You can only celebrate a big win so long, then you have to focus on your next opponent. Anyway, great season Jackets. I still can’t wait for next year.

According to the Tech bloggers over the past few weeks Tech is supposed to win the National Championship next year. Was this just an attampt to lull everyone into a false sense of security?

All I’ve heard over the past few weeks is that the ACC is superior to the SEC. Let’s see…. the SEC #8 team beats the ACC runner-up and the highest ranked ACC team gets pounded by the SEC #5 team. OUCH!

Tech fans question someone’s sportsmanship? After proudly vandalizing the hedges at Sanford Stadium?

The rings…. the hedges….the horrific talk over the past few weeks….karma ain’t so great when it comes back to bite you in the rear.

This blog is too funny as you techie idiots just don’t get it. A three point win is not a walking over of an opponent. One win over Georgia in the last eight is nothing to hang your hats on and then to give your coach an extension. Also, it is GT’s job to stop LSU from scoring and not complain about them running up the score. Too bad that most of the fans had already returned home when the LSU fake punt occurred. They were watching on TV somewhere as they were not in the Dome. ESPN showed the overhead view and all you could see was the red seats in the lower level. Most of the LSU fans were in the upper deck. You guys should try supporting your team a little better the next time you travel to a bowl game! Even if the travel is only a couple of miles. In the infinite wisdom of a Varsity employee: Have, have, what do you have?

Not much in the way of support for your team or common sense for that matter.

The reality is we beat a banged up UGA team which outproduced us on offense and made two critical mistakes to lose the game more than we won it. The INT and the Samuel fumble. I don’t think UGA fans would be enjoying last night’s beatdown so much if Tech fans had not..

  1. Talked so much about ACC “superiority” over the SEC over the past few weeks.

  2. Talked about winning the NC next year.

  3. Defended the vandalism of the hedges at Sanford Stadium after the GT/UGA game.

  4. Chanted A-C-C while beating the hapless Miss State team.

  5. Acted as if Tech had trounced UGA when in fact they beat them by a mere field goal…mostly due to a couple of UGA errors.

Ain’t college football fun?

Well, I guess the Tech seniors could put 1 & 3 against UGA and 38 to 3 in the CFBon their rings. Tech wanted the win more than UGA this year and took it, but showed no class with taking part of the hedges and the whole ring deal. The Tech people know this, and know they are chumps. Congrats on a game that could have been a lot worse than it was. I think the ref’s kinda tightened the reigns on LSU’s offense in the 4th with those holding calls keeping this game as close as it was. CPJ may be rethinking his issuance of a ring to symbolize a win over UGA,(no class) Tech folks may be rethinking his contract after being humilated by the Tigers. One AJC reporter commented “don’t overlook the fact that Ga. Tech held LSU to 3 points in the 2nd half, I wonder if he overlooked the fact that LSU held Ga. Tech scorless in the last 3 quarters? Ga. Tech coaches say reason for the beatdown was LSU seinors and more experience in the weight room, difference in this game was GAMEPLAN. LSU had one GA. Tech didn’t. no problems with the fake punt in the 4th by LSU, Ga. Tech tried a fake punt earlier in the game, LSU executed theirs better is all. CPJ now has something to put on another ring. Might even be a motivational tool, wear the UGA score on one ring and the embarrassing LSU score on the other ring, the latter being a result of not being prepared to play. And to all you ACC junkies out there who said the mighty ACC is so dominating, you are currently 0-4 in bowl games, more ring material.

This was a severe, obviously, butt kicking by a mediocre team just as UNC was medicore when it beat Tech by 21. The defense didn’t have a clue and let a freshman QB look better than Tebow. Also let a SLOOOWWWW fullback run all over them. No preparation whatsoever or their minds were elsewhere. The defense gave up 80 points in the past two games and kept our offense off the field. The onsides kick should have been anticipated. Overall, lousy. A long way to go. We certainly have nothing to gloat about. Beating UGA makes this season successfull but the rest of it, really, was just okay.

Face it - GT EMBARRASSED themselves, GT, the bowl, the ACC, etc. For any team, anywhere, it’s OK to lose, but get ready, have a plan, play hard, etc. GT LSU was part of the season. The lows and the highs, both say something about the team, maturity, etc.

Only GT players know what was in their hearts.

GT and this GT football edition is better than what GT showed in this bowl.Let’s hope no matter the season, etc, GT is done with these kinds of games.

Even your mascot looks like a queer geek like the rest of your student body. By the way, do you realize how stupid those rings make the Techies look? How pathetic and sad that you have to get a ring made in honor of one win. LOSERS

This is what happens when you run a gimmick offense. When a team has a few weeks to prepare, they can easily figure out Johnson’s option game. Just like the good defensive coordinators in the ACC will next season. His schemes work fine for Navy, but you better have something a little more advanced if you want to play with the big boys.

Not necessarily, that Tech was equal or better than LSU. This LSU team reminded a lot of the Tech Team back in 1989, that went 7-4. They were big and fast, and came together at the end of the season (around a new QB). We all know how good that team was in 1990, (1 or 2 depending on which poll you chose to believe). I fully expect LSU to do the same next year, and maybe play in the SEC championship game.

For some reason throughout the game I kept having a vision of the Keystone Cops playing football. Any mistake tech could make, they did. Josh Nesbit looked terrible throwing the ball, and his option reads weren’t much better. Special teams were a mess, and the defense looked slow and confused. Not to mention a poorly officiated game, it looked like tech was playing two teams out there.

After the Clemson game I posted my opinion of CPJ and his triple option and got called every name in the book. The ones that did most of the name calling are not posting after this LSU debacle.WHERE ARE YOU NOW? Use lots of salt and pepper as you eat those words. DRAD—-you got snookered. Contracts are renegotiated after the bowl season, not before. As for bowl games, CPJ is right out of the Gailey mould. I am not jumping off the CPJ bandwagon, because I never jumped on. I still dont like the triple option and LSU showed why. CPJ was simply outcoached.

A few years back the option was the offense of many top programs, but as soon as defenses caught on, it was abandoned. CPJ sosent know how to coach anything else, so be prepared to live with almost good and just needing a few more players to make his system work for the next 7 years or for however long his new cantract is for. GO TECH.

Regarding the fake punt in the 4th quarter. GET OVER IT! It was the GT defenses job to stop it and they didn’t. Notice that when the jackets ran a fake punt, the Bayou Bengals stopped him! (4th and 8 on your own 25 yard line?, even Miles - the Mad Hatter isn’t that crazy)’.

And the 4th quarter passes, we had to get our true freshman QB some experience since it was only the 2nd start of his LSU career.

Jack G,

Where were you after the FSU, Miami and UGA wins? I remember looking specifically to see if you posted and didn’t see anything. I think you want to be right far more than you want to support this team.

Tech didn’t score last night. They made a ton of mistakes. They also had 310 total yards. Do you know how many LSU had? 313. 3 yards more than Tech. Yet a 35 point difference. We stopped ourselves along with LSU’s game plan. LSU and Florida have crushed teams playing pro-style offenses to win the NC. Yet they haven’t abandoned their systems.

It is certainly fine to be upset about the loss. I spent a fair amount of time yelling at the TV last night myself. Should we re-hire Gailey? Repeat the Humanitarian bowl performance of last year with the lovely pro-style offense we were so, so proficient in running?

I believe we have a coach who will make adjustments to the way he does things so that we have the best opportunity to WIN! It IS going to be an uphill battle to be competitive at Tech. Do we want to sacrifice academic standards for arrest records like UGA? Have the lowest SAT scores for football players like Florida? To me, the most impressive thing our coach has done this year is post a great first year records with a young team, new system ALL THE WHILE increasing their GPAs!!

By Back2Normal

I wonder if LSU will be lame enough to make a ring to commemorate their huge win over the number 14 team in the nation? LOL, how much more pathetic can Tech get!?!?

As much as it pains me, I have to agree with some of the Jacket haters on here. I had my doubts about if we played UGA 3 more times this year if we’d even win one. We were incredibly fortunate that UGA apparently rubbed butter all over their hands at halftime since they couldn’t tackle us for nothing from that point on. But to give Johnson a contract extension after one year was jumping the gun. I don’t think this offense is going to work out very well and more importantly, what about our defense!?!? We have 3 of the best defenders we’ve had in years on the team now that will be going pro and we can’t stop just decent offenses with them. We’re going to be really bad next year.

The real question is not about LSU properly executing a fake punt in the 4th perion BUT WHY did CPJ try one in the second qtr on his own 22? That was stupid and reminded me of the old Ky coach who used to never punt and when he did it was usually a fake. CPJ took his team out of the game with stupid 4th down calls and fake punts and trying to prove he can pass without a passer or a passing offense. His ego lost that game.

And Techies quit all the whinning about LSU not having class. I think it was Tech who cut off pieces of Ga’s hedge and put up “To hell with GA” on your own scoreboard. And that was after a LOSS to Ga. So no one is shedding tears for you. You just played a better team froma a better league. Beating Miss ST and giving up 42 to Ga and winning b ecause you made no mistakes for the only game this year and Georgia having a horrible defense does not make you a power house. Class is not making a ring with the score of winning one game in 8 years against your rival while your team failed to win a division or league championship and not even a Bowl game. Enjoy.

Dawg Catcher, call it gloating or whatever. The bottom line is this….. All you techies thought you were great after you beat UGA. This year, I wasn’t surprised Tech beat UGA the way our defense was playing. For tech fans, players, coaches, etc to “gloat” about this win is expected. But techies had to carry it further saying bring on any SEC foes or anyone else in the nation. We’re that good and can play with anyone. Well, last night didn’t turn out so well. So, today, while you’re having your black eyed peas and collards, make sure to finish it off with a little humble pie. It may not taste good but take a big ole bite and eat it all….Good boy…good boy.

By ClemsonNeil

What happened to the Jackets is the same thing that happened to Clemson when they played Alabama. The Jackets saw a LSU team that was at best a second tier SEC team and far from the team that won the BCS last year with a QB making his second start over the previous starter who couldn’t play the position. So they expected to be able to run their offense at will and dominate on defense over LSU “not so great” offense. Thus they underestimated their opponent and were left scratching there head going into the locker room at the half trailing by 32 points.

Now that we see what a mid-level SEC team can do to Tech with a couple of weeks to look at film and prepare; just wait until next season when teams have had a whole offseason to gameplan against Johnson.

Honeymoon’s over Techies…

Vince, thank you for putting us back into a proper perspective! First of all, you’re speaking of ONLY a few overzealous tech fans when you point out their call for a national championship! I DO suppose that maybe we should give it shot, since uga has blown through all their hype and have come up empty handed( perhaps like you when you reach your hand into your pants?). Secondly, lsu is the defending national champion! Yes, they’ve replaced their starting quarterback and it took them a while to find him; that team was the most loaded team with five losses in the history of football (i didn’t do any research and maintain that they looked like this to me). Thirdly, ANYONE that wins in athens takes a piece of ‘the hedge’! Personally, i have no problem with lsu pulling off the fake punt. Fourthly, regarding Karma…Tech’s karma ran over your DOGMA! As for the Tech fans chanting A-C-C, Tech was chanting the same thing when we were beating your little puppy hineys! We continue to have the right to do so…we’re 2-1 against it! Our rings were in celebration of a senior class FINALLY getting the dawgs off our shoulders and keeping ‘the streak’ in favor of the JACKETS! I’m not convinced the triple option will work consistently. It worked in the UGA game for one simple reason: this year’s UGA defense is one of the the worse defenses in the country. After all, Tech scored less than UF against the same worthless defense. Of course, Tech’s defense is pretty sorry as well.

Quite frankly, I just don’t get all the hoopla about beating a very average UGA team. I would be much more concerned about games like the UNC and LSU games. Those games make it pretty clear that well coached defenses can stop the option.

Maybe I’m wrong, but only time will tell.

Funny how most of the people posting on this are mostly Georgia/SEC fans, when from what I understand this is looking for opinions from fans of the team in question. You want to make comments on team stick to your own. I don’t think the triple option failed to work I think the players failed to run it. To all these posters who probably didn’t even watch the game GT came out flat and stayed that way. Didn’t play with even an ounce of motivation. And I’ll agree with some of the statements made, GT cared way to much about beating Georgia. To those talking about Johnsons’ extension. He got one extra year and a pay raise probably paid for by the stupid bandwagon alumni that only care about beating Georgia. Hopefully now that this young team has been thoroughly embarrassed on national television and they’ve beaten UGA they will set their priorities straight. This game sent GT from having a great breakout year to having a year that is considered a success due to the circumstances faced but would be a letdown to any other major school. In spring practice we need to have starting offense against starting defense with full contact to practice passing, it’ll be the only way to get these guys prepared it seems.

Great win for the LSU Fightin’ Tigers…all that puff press GT got the last four weeks swelled their head up and pi$$ed off LSU-bad move, just ask Miami in the 2005 Peach Bowl. Everyone forgets that Les is best when following up a loss (or in this case, 3 losses UGH)…as to the 4Q fake punt-better learn how to stop it. Deep throws-working on the offense for ‘09-better learn how to stop it. GT better find a QB that can throw the ball and WRs who can catch or 2009 will be a bad year. We showed the rest of the ACC how to stop the triple option.

As for all you UGA fans who keep saying that y’all whipped us…your OFFENSE only scored 38 points-same as ours. Those two pick-6s were the difference. Take THOSE away and YOU LOSE!! tech fans should be screaming, fuming mad at Paul Johnson. My son and I were at the game as a “Christmas present to him”. Tech should have Booed Paul Jonhson for not preparing this team. We, the fans took it seriously. But from coach’s comments the last three weeks about “not working too hard in practice, short practices’, and general goal of this game,”ala, it’s not like its a conference game” is bull. TECH NATION, ITS NOT JUST BEATING GEORGIA OR WINNING 8 OR 9 GAMES A YEAR. TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL THESE GAMES SHOULD MEAN SOMETHING. Look at the fans that turned out for this game. The STATE OF GEORGIA WAS ENERGIZED FOR TECH. PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT TECH FOOTBALL. THE NATION WAS STARTING TO TAKE NOTICE. But, the game was over after the first quarter. Tech did not look prepared at all and it showed. And I haven’t even mentioned the fake punt from inside our own thirty in the first half. That was the most insane call I have ever seen. LOOK TECH FANS, I’M SO TICKED TODAY. YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE ME BUT FRANKLY, I DONT CARE. I AM, HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE A FOOTBALL FAN. I LIKE THE DOGS AND I LIKE TECH. TECH MORE BECAUSE THEY PLAY WITH MORE HEART AND HAVE TO DO MORE WITH WHAT THE’VE GOT. BUT TRUE HARD NOSE FOOTBALL. THAT’S WHY PAUL JOHNSON TURNED ON SO MANY PEOPLE, BECAUSE HE DEMANDED EXCELLENCE.THIS ILL PREPARED TEAM THAT SHOWED UP AT THE DOME AND ON NATIONAL TV DID MORE HARM TO TECH FOOTBALL THAN ANY OF US WILL EVER KNOW. I’m not blaming the team but the COACH, AND I LOVE THE COACH. TECH FANS SHOULD DEMAND AN APOLOGY FROM PAUL JOHNSON FOR NOT DOING WHAT HE IS GETTING PAID ALOT OF MONEY TO DO. In closing, THIS TEAM WAS NOT BEATEN, THEY DIDN’T PRACTICE OR SHOE UP TO PLAY. DON’T SWEEP THIS MESS UNDER THE RUG TECH FANS BECAUSE YOU WERE GAINING THOUSHANDS OF NEW FANS BUT LOST THOUSHANDS LAST NIGHT, NOT BECAUSE OF A LOST, BUT BECAUSE OF A TEAM THAT WAS LOST!!!!

Johnson said a month ago bowl games are supposed to be rewards and fun. Well geesh - did you have fun guys? I was there and demand an apology from Johnson and a refund for me ticket. That was the absolute most disgusting showing ever. D Rad is his boss. If I performed like Johnson did on my job - I’d have a serious talking to. D Rad better sit him down and tell him never to do that again. What a miserable night. ANd to those posters who say it is okay, we still had a good season and we beat Georgia - get lost. We will remember this year by our last game - that is how it goes. And we should drop out of the Top 25 for that for sure - we don’t deserve it.

Why are Tech fans such babies?

Let’s see, -your team just got embarrassed by a mediocre SEC team. -you are focusing on the wrong fake punt call. Tech’s fake punt in the first half was the worst call i’ve ever seen in CFB. Explain that CPJ or Tech fans? -Yeah Tech beat UGA this year, but that has been an exception over the last several decades. -And you get a ring to celebrate it? -Tech fans bring up Florida to Georgia fans? at least UF is a great team that UGA struggles with. -Tech did win the paper airplane award during the game! and the band played a great “Budweiser” theme song at the end of the 3rd qtr! so, you got that going for you, which is nice. -Yes, Les Miles is an a$$ for his play calling, no question.

that about covers it.

I am not just trying to be an I told you so. I jusst dont like CPJ football. But that is just me. If you like it, good for you. To me it is more than just a few wins, It should be a more balanced game. The important thing to me is how the game is played (effort). Thanks coach Johnson, you really got my 2009 off to a “greaaat” start!

Early December quote from PJ, “we treat bowl games like a reward, and don’t practice as hard as during the regular season.” That worked-out nice.

Yeah, I’d say Les Miles showed poor class in the 4th qtr (calling a time out to setup the O, throwing the long pass - called back for holding thank god -, and the fake punt).

It resonates even more after reading a earlier blogger’s comment about keeping the starters in while the backups stayed on the sidelines. Backups who most likely had friends & family in attendance that would’ve been thrilled to see their friend & son play more than just a few snaps. 38-3 was the perfect opportunity to let them play a lot, coach …….karma.

To my fellow Tech fans….the Jackets will win 9 or more in 2009. This game will have the same effect to Tech next season as GA’s win over Hawaii did for the dogs last season (wasn’t GA supposed to win the NC this year b/c of that win???) And how bad is Oklahoma suffering this season as a result of their beat-down from W.Va in the Fiesta Bowl last year??

The BEST part of the evening for us was a near game-long conversation we had with the Cajuns sitting in front of us (who sometimes we couldn’t understand) tell us how “pathetic” and “trashy” UGA fans are. “We’re just glad you guys beat Georgia” was said over and over again. And yet here you UGA fas are wanting to have a lovefest with LSU??? Hilarious.

Probably the biggest joke of this bowl game is we get to keep the check anyway.

Having said that, I hope CPJ learned a lesson about “relaxed” practices and preparation, and that the team learned about becoming complacent. Too bad our offense could not match the stepped up 2nd half defensive effort, but LSU was well prepared and executed.

What a let down after playing some of the best football ever at the end of November. I think this hard lesson will end up serving the team well over the off-season.

And now to Les Miles. Enjoy your victory. It neither makes your season great nor lessens GT’s season. When you’ve got the game in the bag in the 4th quarter, a coach with class would let all his players play. What an a*******hole. Like others, even I now have found a reason to cheer for UGA - every time they play your team.

Yeah, I have to admit, we looked like that team over in Athens last night. No passion, no disciplin, poor coaching, over confident, unprepared, and confused. I am glad we gave athens something to be proud of. We were 2-1 against the overrated SEC this year. Just like the North Carolina game, we beat ourselves last night. Paul will have us ready for next year. Come on over dawgs. By the way. When Tech was in the SEC, they dominated it next to Alabama. Look at the history and see. I know yall at athens like to go after sec titles. We like the national ones at BOBBY DODD. Vince Dooley is considered a legend in athens. Bobby Dodd has a national coach award named after him. The Heisman award is also named after a Georgia Tech coach. He got us one of the four national titles we have. Quit whining athens…..

GT’s problem is the same one that the Falcons had under Jim Mora with Vick as QB. If the Falcons had played Schuab that year when we needed a comeback, and in OBVIOUS passing downs theres no way that falcons team wouldnt of made the playoffs.

So its obvious what both teams needed. A WHITE QB that can PASS …. to bring in on obvious pass plays!

Someone like a Joe Cox from UGA would be perfect as GT’s 3rd and long QB. Good game by UGA today as well. I hope Stafford comes back.

The bowl game against LSU didnt mean anything anyways so im not 2 hurt by it. It was just another MEANINGLESS exhibition game, on the same level as a preseason NFL game.

Okay puppies and critics, use this one game as a crystal ball for the future. Absolutely comical.

A game full of missed assignments, poor decisions, bad special teams, and bad breaks means CPJ’s offensive is predictable, Tech’s great over-achieving this year was a fluke, and hanging 45 on UGA in Athens was lucky.

I get tired of reading posts from uninformed football fans. This is exactly why I really do not like to talk to people about football.

Knock the triple option all you want - I think after one season of proving people wrong about its worthiness, people should put it to rest. In football, any well blocked play can score a touchdown - but with the triple option, you can have a missed block be exploited by the option.

Plus, Johnson has already talked about installing passing. I do not know what any of you are talking about. Option football is only as good as the quarterback - and face it, Nesbitt is currently too inconsistent to run it well. I think Josh has the ability, but he needs to stop trying to put the team on his shoulders and win the game on every play. I do not understand why he options when he has open field in front of him, and does not option when there is no open field in front of him.

Also, the option works best if you can get the linemen off the 1st level of blocks and get them to get to the 2nd and 3rd levels. So, optimally, you want a line that isn’t as big, but has speed. Right now, Tech’s line has no speed.

Also, I want one of you to tell me how the triple option played so pitifully on special teams and on defense. Actually, let me save you time. You can’t! It’s impossible to link the them together.

The thing I can see that is a problem is Tech’s inability to play low on the defensive line. If defensive player is greatly undersized, they must play low. LSU’s offensive line was much bigger than Tech’s defensive line (as was every other line that Tech played this year). It was unnerving to see that every time the ball was snapped, the first thing Tech did was stand up, where they were promptly driven into the ground. Tech’s ends also have trouble keeping their containment duties (maybe it’s because they play so high). Want to see excellent proof? Just look at John Abraham.

Also, I have no problem with the fake punt in the second quarter. Had that one Tech player blocked someone, Burnett would have gotten the first down. Watch the play if you believe otherwise.

I also have no problem with what Miles did at the end of the game. Tech had every chance to stop the play, and they didn’t.

And to all you Georgia fans. Pipe down. The rings were to commemorate breaking the streak. Not only because they beat Georgia. The players can take that to the grave that their play broke the streak. Quit making yourselves sound good because you say, “Georgia is all Tech has.” Because, really, Football is all Georgia has.

And one final note: Those Hedge branches will grow back. I would figure an Ag School would be aware of that. But, that does not mean that I actually approved of them doing it.

To summarize your dribble, I think what you could have said in so few words is, “my team sucks donkey dong and I hate the fact we extended the fraud Johnson’s contract.” Sound about right?

Don’t worry, you’ll get that next win against the Dawgs in another 8 years. Narrowing the margin then to a shade under 30. I also heard the Smurf Bowl has already made your invitations for next year. Congrats!!

Proud of Tech on an overachieving year. Did UGA overachieve with all of their 4 and 5 star players? I think not. UGA might have blown a great opportunity to win it all if Stafford and Moreno leave. I have not seen many QB’s with the arm Stafford has.

Zero blame should be placed on defense. I counted two drives all night where Tech’s offense moved the ball with any success at all-one ended with a field goal and the other ended with a Nesbitt interception. LSU’s 3 scoring drives to end the first half all started in Tech territory-2 of them were very deep in Tech territory. Great year for the Jackets and Paul Johnson, but Coach should be ashamed of himself for last night. At some point Nesbitt should have been pulled and replaced by Shaw. Hopefully none of the recruits will jump off of the bandwagon. Dismal performance, but it could all be forgotten if Tech has another season next year like they did this year.

Before the season, I told my wife I would be very happy with a 6-6 season, I thought the 3-9 prediction was a bit low, at least I hoped it would not turn out that bad. With all the talk about the Dawgs being preseason #1, I figured that one was automatically in the loss column. I was wrong, hallelujah!!!!

45-42 over UGA and beating FSU was a nice bonus as well. In fact I still have the Tech -UGA game on my TIVO and may never erase it.

So Jackets, congratulations on a fine season!!! Much better than anyone expected, especially all the dawg fans on this blog. (But I do like to laugh at their spelling and diction).

Now, let’s learn from these 4 losses, put in a ton of time in the weight room, and see if we can’t at least equal this years record, and keep “beating the dawgs” at the top of your list!!!

Man, I sure am glad UGA had their worst defense in program history this year. That fluke of a 3 point win I got over them, with some serious help from the refs, paid off my mortgage and kids college educations. I sure am glad my bosses were drinking the same koolaid as our weaka$$ bandwagon fan base.

Just when I thought my life was getting better. I talked to the first girl of my life last night on the phone that I met on the internet. I got my new 2009 Tech football package filled with free cokes, hotdogs and old Victoria Secret catalogs all for 10 bucks. And then bam, we get exposed as a ridiculously overrated program with a gimmicky offense and the real team in Georgia takes care of business and wins their game. I wish my Dungeons and Dragons group met tonight :(

Tech had a good year especially when everybody thought the “new offence” would be a joke. However from now on teams will watch the way LSU played as a model as to handle their triple offense. This is the real gut check for Tech. LSU has better talent and recrutes can’t help but see this.

I was terribly disappointed in the game but not with the team. We accomplished far more than I thought with a team CPJ did not recruit. We beat the dawgs, I’m happy. I will brag for a year. I will celebrate our new coach and what will be. I can’t wait for next season and the season after. I do think LSU was overlooked, not because we didn’t think they were good, but because the win over UGA was so great. We will learn from this, we will move on, and we will still be Ga. Tech. Rich in tradition, happy we’re not dawgs, and proud to be Yellow Jackets!

I disagree with those who believe CPJ needs to adjust his game. It’s a winning combination, as long as you have all the right parts working together well. We lack a bigger/more aggresive O-line that can protect the backfield and the pocket and we severely lack a strong/talented secondary.

If we need wide receivers, it’s really just to make them DBs to shut out the inevitable passing offense that most teams seem to revert to (just take a look at the final four Pontiac Game-Changing moments of the year for proof) Morgan Burnett, as talented as he is, cannot defend seven wide receivers while also watching running backs and tie-ends at the same time.

I’d like a passing option, but frankly, we don’t need it if we play how Johnson wants us to play. That is, as long as we can protect the option against bigger BCS-worthy opponents and we can stop the all-too-typical passing games of most Div-1 schools.

Oh - and Tech has completely lost their focus in an area they once dominated, year after year: Special Teams.

To the UGA fans… 45 is always more than 42. Plus, you also had your own beat down by the Gators and Tide this year so you don’t have much room to talk about ours.

To the impatient Tech Fans… Our freshmen and sophomores held their own for most of the year until we faced a more experienced, stronger, and faster off/def lines of LSU. 16 of our 22 starters are freshmen or sophomores. Give us a two years of recruiting and maturity and a better passing phase of the offense - then, we can see where we are.

Lets see, would I rather have a team that entered the season unrated, new coach, new system, predicted to win 3 to 4 games and to lose again to their instate rival only to out perform all expectations by winning 9 games being in 2 more to the end and beaten soundly in 2, beating 2 out of 3 SEC opponents and beating their instate rival by 3 after being down by what seemed to be an insurmountable amount at half time and ending up ranked higher in all 3 polls than their instate rival?

Or, would I like to have a team that entered the season rated number 1 only to fall in the polls further and further each week as they under performed with a supposed star quarterback (that didn’t even get an invitation to the Heisman presentation and supposed great coach, losing 3 home games (yes Florida was considered a home game), to end up rated lower than their instate rival, and have to live vicariously through another teams accomplishments?

I think the smart person would like to have the first team.

Of course those that would like the second team are the same ignorant people that would come on to this blog and try to talk smack about the first teams fans leaving before the completion of their bowl game while their team is playing to a partially filled stadium (much like the attendance at their last home game with their instate rival).

I was at the GT game last night and the LSU fans displayed more class than the UGA fans will ever be able to display. I also heard from several of then how glad they were that GT beat UGA. The classless posts above are proof positive that UGA fans are morons and that they nor their team deserve no respect from anyone.

Congratulations to GT for beating all expectations for this year. I for one am looking forward to next year and an even better season.

Oh, how is the SEC now? The problem with the game, I think, is that you couldn’t get over the GA game. Our players did and focused on our bowl game. You came in so cocky thinking that you could beat anyone just because you beat UGA and Miami. Come on, don’t you move on to the next game? Nope, didn’t happen then, won’t happen next year. It is a fluke. CPJ cares about his image and nothing else. Do you think he cares about the players? He should blame himself for the loss last night. Not the players. Did he? Nope. Poor coaching. But he blames the players. Nice coach. Get to love him for the next year. Two years, that’s all it takes for everyone to take advantage of the wonderful triple option that worked so well against LSU. You have already had one … oh yeah he can win, but when it get’s to be when he thinks he can’t do it anymore what happens? He leaves!!!! GA Tech is pathetic. Hmmm. So the choice is to be a a flash in the pan that nobody expects to do anything significant because, well, they rarely do or a team that is consistently good enough that people expect them to be great. I guess the “smart” person would like to have the first team. That would be easier, huh? Just sit back and play crap football for a few years so you have no pressure to excel. Great idea. I guess Tech will start the next abysmal streak next year so 4 or 5 years from now nobody will expect anything from them again.

Tech fans can say whatever they want, but NO team could have sustained the injuries that UGA suffered this year and still compete, let alone maintain a #1 ranking. Tech beat UGA by, what, 3 points? Do you really believe that would have been the case if UGA had even half of their injured starters playing? If so, you are living in fantasy land. But hey, your boys got themselves some commemorative rings made. To me, that sounds like they don’t expect it to happen again for a while. Maybe it will be a new tradition. Once every 8 years Tech will beat UGA and get some rings made.

Slim G,

I will admit Alabama and Florida are excellent teams and UGA is a very good team, especially on offense. After that I just don’t get your point.

Ole Miss - pretty good - lost to Wake Forest

Vandy - decent - lost to Duke

South Carolina - lost to Clemson

Auburn/Tennessee - could not score vs. air.

I have to also agree that Nesbitt did not throw the ball very well last night. Hopefully for Tech fans this will improve. LSU QB made his second start and I think they have found their guy. They have great athletes on that team and it was just a matter of time before they jelled. I would be worried about them next year if I were a Dawg fan. If it was so easy to defend Tech’s offense then why did UGA with two weeks to prepare and 4 and 5 star athletes unable to stop the Jackets rushing attack?

I’ve waited to blog because I obviously was very upset with last night’s game, especially after my son and I sat in the dome depressed with the results. But now I am ready.

We just completed a truly wonderful year. CPJ did it with smoke and mirrors all year long. We should never have beaten big, fast athletic teams like FSU, UGA and Miami, but we did. The future is very bright.

Now, I hope Coach Johnson did learn that a little more bowl prep. work might be a good idea. I would bet the seniors would say that losing this game like they did hurt much worse than a few more 2-a-days during December. I’m not saying we would have won the game just because more work was done, but I am confident the game would not have been embarrassing.

Coach Johnson admits his mistakes, and I am confident that winning is so important to him that he will make changes when changes are necessary.

I want to thank all of the GT seniors for 4 years of work and especially for their leadership this year. I want to thank Morgan Burnett for playing his tail off last night even though we were getting killed. We will only have you for one more year, but I really appreciate you attending Tech. You are going to be a great professional ball player!! Same goes to Jon Dwyer!!

Go Jackets!! We have every reason to believe that GT will win the ACC and beat UGA again in 2009.

Has there ever been a football player in the history of Division 1 Football that was an “Architecture Major”?

If so, he would have failed out instantaneously!!!

Can someone explain what these semi-pro, 100% business oriented football teams have with their respected universities besides absolutely nothing?

There is a reason why the USA is the only country in the entire world that uses and degrades it’s 4 and 5-star academic universities as semi-pro sports training grounds?

The answer is obvious!

The 2008 football season is over for both Tech & GA.

In the 2008 season, One team, with a new coach, and a new, no-chance-of-working offense exceeded expectations; while the other, loaded with returning starters & future NFL Hall-of-Famers fell short of expectaions.

Tech lost its bowl game. GA won its bowl game.

The bowl results do not mean Tech will never win another game, and GA will never lose another game (though blogs from some GA fans appear to indicate that).

Games like the 2008 Chick-fil-A bowl happen every week, every season. One team plays well, the other doesn’t, and it’s reflected on the only thing that counts in the end…the scoreboard (see the 2008 GA vs. Fla or the 2008 GA vs. Ala games for referrences).

Winning & losing are part of the game.

Tech played GA on 11/29/08.

Tech won the game played on 11/29/08.

Tech’s 11 offensive starters, and 8 defensive starters from the 11/29/08 game have not declared for the NFL draft; meaning they are expected back in 2009.

2008 marked the 12th season as head coach for Paul Johnson, 11 of them completed with winning records. Percentages say 2009 will be the 12th winning season out of 13.

What happens to tech when Chan’s skill talent is gone. LSU showed your your future with Chan’s quality athletes. What appears to be happening is that tech is going to eventually wind up with a bunch of slow Lucas Cox types. Your future is dim. Of course PJ bails after next year anyway. LSU mind you are the defending national champions who lost a starting QB last spring and played QB shuffle all year but still took Alambama to the end and gave UGA a win because of a third string QB throwing 2 pick sixes! UGA never put them away LSU matched them touchdown for touchdown and gave them TWO free TD’s .. LSU has found them a QB finaly and they will complete for the National Title next year. Oh, and how many 10 win seasons has Tech had in the past 10 years and how many UGA victories? That’s what I thought…..

By ProudTechFan

January 2, 2009 9:02 AM | Link to this

hey Mayretta_Dawg, the fact is the Tech only has three seniors on the team, they are all on the defensive line and trust me, they will all be drafted, quite possibly first day draft picks. Name one impact player from UGA in the past five years on an NFL roster. I can name plenty from Tech. Lets start with Tashard Choice, yes the other backs in Dallas got injured, but he put up over 150+ total yards against the leagues best defenses (Pittsburg and Baltimore) and oh yea, the kid was a rookie. Dajuan Landry earned a starting spot on the Ravens D, half way through his rookie season, a couple of years ago, and is currently injured. A rookie starting next to Ray Lewis, seems unheard of. James Butler starting Safety for the Superbowl Champions NY Giants. Gerris Wilkinson started on that defense last year before an injury, lets not forget about the number 2 pick on the 07 draft Calvin Johnson, he plays on the worst team in history, but he is easily a top 10 maybe a top 5 receiver. David Greene cant seem to find a football to throw since he got in the league and he was the winningest QB in SEC history. Shockley let a rookie QB from an ACC school earn a starting spot for the Falcons. Now Stafford will a hig draft pick and Moreno will too, but recent history has proven the UGA players dont translate into the NFL. I personally think Stafford will be a good QB in the league, he has all the tools. but Moreno will struggle, because his game is centered around speed and everyone in the league is fast, so we’ll see how he does. One more fact sir, the ACC has more players drafted in the last ten years than any other conference. Thats a fact.

On to the game, Les miles did what UGA didnt take advantage of, and thats having extra time to prepare. UGA had 2 weeks and LSU had 4 weeks. His team was more discipline and played excellent on defense. Unfortunatly we didnt have an answer for them. It was embarrassing but i am not disappointed in my team for the season they had this year.

Nice game Tech! Maybe next year you will remember to focus on the game in front of you, not the game behind you. You got a nice rings though! Win a conference title or a national title then get a ring. You don’t get a damn ring for winning one game………..I don’t care who you beat!

I warned the Techies that all their post-UGA bravado and arrogance would come back to haunt them sooner or later. Hate to say I told you so. You’ve made your bed Techies. Time to lay in it.

Where are all you loud mouth Tech fans now? What was that sh!t about you wanting a better opponent in your bowl game.

Next time you better tell your nerd @ss bandwagon fans to keep their mouths shut until you prove you can compete against a team that has won Championships in the last 28 years.

Maybe you should stay in the ACC until you prove you can win against the top teams in the SEC. You got your @ss handed to you and this was an off year for LSU.

Don’t ever forget that the GA Dome is LSU’s home away from home.

I for one have always wondered why teams have problems stopping PJs form of triple option offense even when they are faster and more talented. You always hear that if teams play disciplined defense and defend an area that it can be stopped. Obviously that is not the case. Tech’s backs get the ball in space off the pitch too many times and no defense screws up every play. But watching the game the other night after hearing Les Miles talk about practicing without the ball the light kinda went on…I think. Obviously practicing without the ball doesn’t mean you tackle every player that could possibly get the ball. That’s illegal in a live game. So it has to be picking up keys from the blocking schemes and things the QB, A&B backs, and the TE from time to time do and tip. So I started watching 1st the line, then the TE and backs, and then Nesbitt. What jumped out was that LSU had 2 players, DBs or a DB and LB attacking the pitch man even when the defender normally assigned the pitch man was sealed off. And Tech does that very effectively and that accounts for all the open space the pitch back sees. This is what I think, and guys I could be wrong. I’ve never played defense above the HS level in my life.

1- In the passing game Nesbitt basically does 3 things. Straight drop from center, rolls out from center, both of which are pretty certain to indicate a pass. The other is a play action fake, 2 steps down the line and then drops back. That was one of the things LSU was watching. If Nesbitt takes more than 2 steps down the line of scrimmage those DBs knew they did not have to stay on the recievers and immediately crashed the edge. Same goes for the LB that generally drifts into the area just outside the tackle box. With no threat of a pass those guys came flying to the ball and actually outnumbered the offense at the moment of the pitch or after.

2- When the blocker, be it a lineman, TE, Aback, usually the one on the side the play goes to whatever, committed to sealing of the DE again LSU knew it was a running play and forget everything else. Thus the 2 defenders crashing the edges.

These are just the things I started watching and picked up on and there could be other keys or I could be totally wrong. But it seemed to me that no other team that played Tech this year got so many people out on the edge before the QB had to cut up inside or make the pitch. This was the first time all year that I saw Tech outnumbered out on the corner time after time denying the ball carrier the open space he normally sees when this offense is clicking. The speed of LSUs defense also contributed to the way they closed space after picking up those keys too.

Does anyone else have any ideas about why LSU was so successful. I must admit that I am intrigued with this offense and why it is so hard to stop. But I really think PJ is going to have to develop a passing game that opponents respect. It was obvious that LSU had little or no respect for Nesbitts ability to hurt them with the pass once they jumped out 2 or 3 TDs.

ProudTechFan, You sure got me good. I mean throwing out UGA’s players that didn’t quite make it in the NFL or are currently third stringers when bringing up the mighty GT players in the NFL. Ok, I’ll take your Calvin Johnson and raise him with a Hines Ward who would lay out Calvin Johnson with one arm tied behind his back and has an NFL ring. How about the hard hitting Thomas Davis playing for Carolina, Richard Seymour who has more NFL rings than all Tech NFL players combined. Thomas Brown would have made an impact with the Falcons this year had he not been horse collared and put out for the season and we had Kregg Lumpkin drafted with the Packers. And don’t worry because Moreno is on his way…. PULEASE, Tech going toe to toe with UGA for current players in the NFL??!! I don’t have enough time to list the plethora of current UGA players on D’Lines, O-Lines, Linebacker and Corner right now but I guarantee you maggots don’t even come close.

I think Tech will struggle in bowl games under Paul Johnson. As has been repeatedly said this season, one of the reasons his offense is so successful is the element of surprise, for lack of a better phrase. Opponents simply do not have enough time to prepare for this offense during the regular season. That obviously isn’t the case in a bowl game. They have weeks to prepare.

And if Les Miles’ staff came up with some revolutionary method to prepare for the triple option you can bet that word will spread fast. I don’t think that game bodes well for Georgia Tech football at all. It could be a sign of things to come. That’s just my opinion.

Hey super nerds and the rest of you ugay fans, let’s not remember the most important thing is head-to-head competition. Every time you see a GT flag or license plate you can remember one thing…

RINGDAWGS: The ring was the least we should have done. We need to now erect a statue to the team (and any team) that beats UGA. I am having a 4” 45-42 tattoo on my chest today. Yes, it means that much. As far as Les Miles and “sportsmanship” so what ? His team was well prepared and dominated all phases. When you lose by 35, don’t complain about “running up the score”. Just shut up. We had it coming.

I am having a _ock ring made to commemorate TECH’s win. When I get “that feeling”, I’ll think of you loser mutts and your hairy-backed fraus living in da trailer parks of Bogart, GA. :) PS: the ring is seven inches in circumference - for you dim-witted mutts, that means it is 7 i-n-c-h-e-s around.. GT4LIFE, My nephew recently applied to Tech and UGA. He got accepted into Tech but not UGA. It is harder now to get accepted into UGA than Tech (SAT and highschool GPA). You need to catch-up with reality — times have changed. Also, please don’t use that washed-up excuse that it is hard for Tech to recruit engineers to play football. Tech added the “Management, etc.” degree programs a long time ago.

I have just ordered my new, gold and blue ring embossed with “38-3” SWEET!!! GTH you pimpled faced, sliderule, pocket protector carrying nerds. One fluke win and you go nuts and think you’re a national elite team. But, you have a fine coach that is probably too good for a bunch of little bees. Hey Paul, lots of openings across the nation. Fine another school that is deserving of your talents. The North Avenue Trade School is way beneath your abilities.

Dear Patience…Tech Fans,

What exactly do you think the mighty Tech team could do against Florida and Alabnama? Kinda like you did against LSU? Don’t talk S..t if you can’t back it up. SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC

To CPJ…

Here’s exactly what I think, since you ask…. I think Tech would lose against Florida and Alabama just as Georgia did. Exactly what am I having to back up? I just said UGA was beaten badly twice this year, so you’ve experienced beat downs as well. I never said Tech was a “mighty” team. I actually said Tech beat Georgia 45-42 but was a team filled with Freshmen and Sophomores. And, I didn’t say anything about the SEC’s prowess as a conference so I’m not sure what your point was. I know it’s hard for GA fans to focus. Next time, try to improve your reading comprehension and have a sensible interaction.

Golly gee. All these Dog fans are picking on us. It hurts soooo bad! Those geniuses that lost to us are back to their old ways of crashing a Tech blog. They make me feel soooo bad. But, I am really learning alot here now. It must be a terrible burden that you guys carry…having to know everything there is to know. I’m sure proportionately that there are some of our fans that run their mouths, but it’s simply a game of sheer numbers and the Dawgs got ‘em. I’ve read only 2 serious analysis comments on here, the best from exNFLplayer. What is really funny to me though is a Dog fan calling anyone a bandwaggoner. That’s funny!

Thank Hitler that Coach Johnson and his battling band of engineers lost to LSU. It takes the heat off of Commandant Martinez and me so that we can fly under the radar of scrutiny a bit longer. Hopefully, we can locate new comrade recruits in JUCO who have short arrest records and 1.8 GPAs.
